FOREWORD OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Student Satisfaction Survey (NSE) 2012 painted a positive picture of the education and facilities of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. The content of our education and the quality of our lecturers were more highly valued than in the NSE 2011 and, once again, Hanze UAS scored higher compared to the national average.
In 2012, we also paid plenty of attention to the increase of quality and our commitment to a culture of quality on a university-wide level in the area of education and research. In 2012, the Executive Board also introduced the Lecturer Register, as a result of discussions with the Participation Council, in order to guarantee options to improve the quality of lecturers, their training and relevant professional experience.
Furthermore, Hanze UAS enhanced its profile in 2012 by concluding the performance agreement with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science for the period 2013-2016. Hanze UAS was assessed as 'excellent' by the Review Committee for its plans in the performance agreement, to which funding is attached. Hanze UAS is now able to set up two Centres of Expertise, in close cooperation with partners in the north of the Netherlands, for its previously chosen strategic themes Energy and Healthy Ageing. Hanze UAS is the budget holder of the Centre of Expertise Healthy Ageing. The strategic themes Energy and Healthy Ageing are of great importance to the region, and offer a sound basis for cooperation with many partners in the north of the Netherlands, both in education and in applied research.
3
Hanze UAS is developing new Master's degree programmes for both strategic themes. The accreditation of its Master of Science in Renewable Energy in 2012 was a memorable event for Hanze UAS. Another major event in 2012 was the festive opening of the Energy Academy Europe, which was set up by Hanze UAS and the University of Groningen, in cooperation with a number of companies from the north of the Netherlands. Another happy occasion in 2012 was the opening of the Hanze Honours College.
Following on from the wet Versterking Bestuur (Administration Enhancement Act), an independent and professional functioning of examination boards and the correct structure of the Education and Examination Regulations is required on a university-wide level. Hanze UAS offered special courses in this area in 2012, which underlines the importance of a strict adherence to regulations by its personnel.
We wish to thank all personnel of Hanze UAS who have made a joint effort for the benefit of our students, our education and research, and for the strengthening of a culture of talent development and entrepreneurship.
Groningen, March 2013

Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen chose Energy and Healthy Ageing as strategic themes, which dovetail with the most important focal points of the north of the Netherlands. HANZE UAS cooperates closely with companies, government institutions and (knowledge) institutions in the region in these areas. In 2012, the Minister approved the plans of Hanze UAS to set up Centres of Excellence for Energy and Healthy Ageing. Furthermore, Hanze UAS focused strongly on entrepreneurship in the field of education and applied research, and on the development of education for professionals in the north of the Netherlands in co-makership with the business world. The stimulation of talent development is high on the agenda of the entire Hanze UAS.
Energy is what keeps our society going. The supply of traditional energy sources is slowly but surely running out. Hanze UAS conducts research into new sustainable solutions and trains the energy professionals of the future. In 2012, the first Master students started in the Master of Science Renewable Energy at the Energy Academy Europe, the new institute of Hanze UAS, the University of Groningen and companies in the energy sector. All existing energy researches and energy degree programmes and specialisations of both institutions are united in the Energy Academy Europe, which has made Groningen the most important centre in the Netherlands in the field of energy education. This initiative was supported by the business world, including GasTerra and Energy Valley, the Province of Groningen and the City of Groningen.
The Energy Transition Center (EnTranCe), the experimental garden in the field of energy at the Zernike Campus, was started in 2012. A good example is I-Balance, in which ways are sought to balance the local energy production and consumption. (More information about I-Balance is provided later on in this booklet).
STRATEGIC THEMES
5
Households in the village of Hooghalen provide data about their true energy consumption, which serve as input for this research. EnTranCe is an alliance between GasTerra, Gasunie, BAM and Imtech.
Healthy Ageing, the second strategic theme, is about the question how people could stay healthy longer, and how we can organise society so that everyone has access to the care they need. Finding an answer to this question is of major importance in our ageing society in which more and more people need care, and less people are available to provide it. Hanze UAS has chosen Healthy Ageing as a special area of attention, is a partner in the Healthy Ageing Network North Netherlands (HANN) and provides the programme leaders for the themes Healthy Lifestyle and Food & Nutrition.
Talent development has to be nurtured. Hanze UAS has been working determinedly at this for a few years now. In 2012, over 6% of students participated in this special honours programme for talented students in the Hanze Honours College. Hanze UAS has chosen to focus on talent, because it improves a more ambitious study culture, of which all students could eventually gain.
Entrepreneurship turns new knowledge into economic and social values (valorisation). Hanze UAS considers it an important task to develop and support both the entrepreneurial attitude of students and the road to entrepreneurship. In 2012, at least fifty students of Hanze UAS started their own companies.

Ageing, an ageing workforce: many organisations have a bleak view of the future. Will they be able to attract sufficient staff in the long term? The Centre for Applied Labour Market Research and Innovation and DUO have developed a so-called Learning Studio. It is a work-study place at a company where students are supported during interesting work placements and graduation projects, and where staff can share their knowledge and experience and become educated themselves.
'DUO receives less and less funds, but they are expected to do more. This means that they have to innovate and optimize their processes. At the same time, they see a tight labour market ahead of them, in which they have to fight for students from a university of applied sciences.' Project Leader Merel Hennink has described in a few sentences why DUO turned to Hanze UAS. Initially, DUO only wanted to attract more students for work placements and research assignments, based on the thought that a part of them would stay on at DUO.
Hennink: 'We were thrilled to receive their request. But it would be even more interesting if we could add value to this project for both DUO and Hanze UAS.' Soon, the idea was formulated that the intake of young talent would not be the only subject. The promotion and outflow of staff also deserved attention. 'How do you make sure that people remain flexible and hold on to the skills with which they have to function optimally in a changing organisation? And, when so many elderly staff members retiring, how do you retain their knowledge in the organisation?' When this idea was developed further, it led to a comprehensive approach, in which the intake, promotion and outflow was reviewed, so not only work placements and graduation projects, but also training of staff,

dovetailing with the idea of Life-Long Learning.Under the leadership of Professor in Flexicurity Harm van Lieshout and two partners from DUO, Hennink developed the Learning Studio. 'This truly was a co-creation. We developed the plan for the Learning Studio in six months. It was hard work and we succeeded because we had a great team. We stimulated each other with our enthusiasm and we had a shared dream. Finally, we jointly presented the proposal to the DUO Board.' The Learning Studio is now up and running and Hanze UAS is going to conclude agreements with DUO and other large employers in the region in 2013, in which such extensive collaboration is laid down for the long term. Hennink hopes that the idea will be applied even more often, in the SME sector for instance, or for a group of companies in another sector. 'Education is our number one priority, but that can also take place in the workplace! In addition, lecturers become better at their jobs of they have to develop assignments for the professional field and later integrate them into their education. This is also good for DUO, the region and Hanze UAS.'
The development of the Learning Studio is one of the projects described in the recently published ‘Co-makership in Life-Long Learning in universities of applied sciences’, edited by Professor Harm van Lieshout. The guide is the result of the applied research programme with the same name of the Flexicurity professorship, which is a part of the recently closed Life-Long Learning Programme of Hanze UAS. www.hanze.nl/laverentussenbelangen

People with multiple disabilities do not move nearly enough on account of their disabilities. How fit are these people and how can you measure that? That is not easy to do with this target group. Student of Nutrition & Dietetics Thamar Top conducted research into a usable manner of measuring the body composition of this group of people.
The fat-muscle ratio, the body composition, is one of the aspects of physical fitness. This is usually measured by measuring a skin fold. However, this does not work well for people with multiple disabilities, because they do not understand the instructions, and it is a unpleasant experience for them. Thamar measured the body composition of thirty residents of Koninklijke Visio De Brink in Vries with a really weak current between hands and feet. 'People don't feel a thing. I also made sure to measure them while they were in bed. There was always a support worker present, so it was a very safe situation for them.' She showed that these measurements can yield a reliable result. The exact results in terms of physical fitness are yet to be determined.
At De Brink, more and more attention has been paid to the residents' fitness. They eat healthily and each residents has their own 'exercise plan'. This has reduced the amount of residents with obesity. They also have less physical complaints, and are better able to participate in daily events, such as dressing, brushing teeth and eating. So, fitness is of major importance to the health and well-being of this target group. 'My research linked up with the desire to work evidence-based. For instance, you want to measure if someone has become more fit as a result of an intervention,' says Thamar. Her research falls under the research line of Professor Aly

Waninge of the CARES Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Care Rehabilitation Education & Sport, which is focused on the participation and health of people with a mental and visual handicap.
Thamar's research revolved around finding the right measuring method, not about the measurements themselves. Still, she tentatively reveals information about the results. Her measuring results indicate that some residents have a healthy BMI in terms of length and weight, while they still have a unhealthy fat-muscle ratio. 'Since people with multiple disabilities move so little, they have little muscle mass.' This may mean that their BMI should be measured differently.
Thamar has won a few prizes for her thesis, including the Menzis Transparante Zorg Prize. She is currently conducting research into the health of the elderly using the same measuring technique. She is considering taking a Master's degree programme in Health & Food at Wageningen University. www.hanze.nl/taalexpert

Working on a sustainable energy supply for the future. That is, in short, what the Energy Transition Center (EnTranCe) stands for. If you have cycled along the Zernike lane in recent months, you will have noticed a row of containers and a number of windmills on a fenced plot. What is going on behind those high fences? Rolf Velthuys explains. He is the project leader of I-Balance, one of the first research projects within EnTranCe.
EnTranCe is not only the physical research location, says the project leader. 'It is also a vision and a forum for open co-innovation. Our vision is that we want to work towards a decentralised generation of energy, using solar panels and windmills.' The project is an initiative of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Energy of Hanze UAS, BAM Infra, GasTerra, Gasunie and Imtech. Other companies, organisations and knowledge institutes may also rent the facility of they want to develop new products and services with other parties in a process of open innovation.
EnTranCe has an infrastructure for gas and electricity and, of course, an ICT network. I-Balance is one of the first research projects. A number of companies and Hanze UAS research how to balance the local energy production with the local energy consumption. The Hooghalen Duurzaam Foundation also makes a major contribution to this project. This village in the Dutch province Drenthe strives to be energy-neutral by 2020, which means that they want to produce and consume equal amounts of energy.'Solar panels and windmills are uncontrollable sources. They produce energy when the sun is shining, or when the wind is blowing. You cannot control the sun or the wind. So, you need an additional source of energy for the moments your consumption is higher than the energy you produce.' There

are ten so-called fuel cells, which have been made available by GasTerra, in the EnTranCe containers. Velthuys: 'It is interesting for GasTerra to see if this type of equipment may be of importance in the future. They want to focus on sustainability, but it may also be an interesting business care for them.' The gas-heated fuel cells generate energy for about five households. They are highly efficient, produce low levels of carbon dioxide, and the energy produced does not need to be transported. This last feature helps to solve the problem of the nearly overloaded national grid.
EnTranCe researches all kinds of aspects that come into play when balancing consumption and production. For instance, what do the true consumption patterns look like? Dozens of households in Hooghalen are going to help record this by submitting their consumption data. Researchers also study the fuel cells: how quickly do they start up, how much energy do they produce exactly and what is their output? If you want to find out the optimal balance, you must first determine what 'optimal' actually means. 'Do you want to be independent? Do you want to make money? Or, are you only interested in sustainability?'All these different research themes can only be studied by using various disciplines. 'That is the central theme of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Energy,' says Velthuys. 'We make a box of building blocks of knowledge, and we are going to build wise constructions with it.' www.hanze.nl/smartfritz

The first things that come to mind when thinking of art are paintings, sculptures or classical music pieces. But art may very well be something entirely different: a wrapped bridge by Christo, good satire, or a Facebook project. Thuur Caris, researcher at the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society, conducts research into so-called situation art, which is art in which the environment is a part of the work of art.
One example is the bridge wrapped by Christo. Or the Yes Men: political activists who replaced all copies of the New York Times with papers that contained only good news – after which the stock markets plummeted! Caris once organised a tour of Groningen with the art group Pavlov, of which he is still a member, in which the participants wandered through houses, gardens, a car park, the vault underneath a bridge and many more inaccessible places, and experienced the city in a completely new way.
'Traditional art is focused on the inside, and concerns the relationship between form elements. Situation art composes the entire situation, so also the external relationships with the physical and social environments.' A beautiful sculpture or a landscape oil-painting is a trade object. The earning model is to sell the work of art for as much money as possible. Situation art is very different and it produces a different type of yield, of which Caris has made a list. 'This includes knowledge, innovation, identity, social cohesion or even health.' Caris is following artists in the entire Benelux and the east coast of the United States. How do they create situation art, what is their objective and what does their art yield – for society and for the artists themselves? Caris wants to record

15
which ways there are to live from your art as an artist other than selling your art as a commodity.
'It's slim pickings for artists. There are only a few autonomous artists who can live off the sale of their work – and that usually only lasts a few years. They have to find another position no matter what, they have to become aware of other ways to capitalize on their art and other ways to live from their art. Caris is a lecturer at the Minerva Academy of Popular Culture in Leeuwarden. He supports students who want to be full-time involved in art, and who want to making a living out of it in some way. 'They have to think of things they could do except craftsman or sales person, and how you could still work autonomously as an artist in another role. These questions hardly come up in art education, so I want to include it in my PhD thesis.' www.hanze.nl/musicscape

The future of small villages in the country side in the north of the Netherlands is not looking good. Demographic change and loss of facilities threaten the liveability. NoorderRuimte, Centre of Applied Research and Innovation on Area Development is looking for differentiation in this scenario. For instance, by connecting and supporting the professionals who are involved in area development. And by providing 'strong stories' to villages.
Jannie Rozema is a researcher in the Demographic Change and Living Environment research group of NoorderRuimte, Centre of Applied Research and Innovation on Area Development. For a few years now, she has been involved in the liveability of the country side in the north of the Netherlands. Rozema conducts researches in villages and gives advice about village visions. She supports students in recording the living situation, the social climate, the facilities and the organisation skills of specific villages. The village researches have since become a much-requested product of NoorderRuimte. Village associations contact NoorderRuimte for a village research as a basis for their village vision, and as a starting point for their meeting with the municipal council and other institutions about the future of their village.
Area developersWhen it comes to liveability, a third party plays a role in addition to the inhabitants and the city: the housing corporations. Housing corporations build and rent affordable houses. But they do more. They also think about the social environment in which their tenants live: what is the population structure, which facilities are in high demand, and how can the corporation contribute to the liveability of the neighbourhood

or the village? A study by Rozema revealed that various corporations have employees who focus on area development, with attention to 'stones', the property, on the one hand, and liveability, the social component, on the other hand. However, there was no clear job description available for the position which has now been coined 'area developer', and there was no body of professional knowledge and no professional network for these people.
Inhabitant participationRozema was awarded a substantial RAAK subsidy and set up a project group based on this subject. It was composed of people from housing corporations, municipalities and researchers from various disciplines of Hanze UAS. The group set up a close-knit northern network, developed a competence profile for the position of area developer, and listed success factors for area development. This led to the publication of ‘Op en top Gebiedsontwikkelaars’. The research was conducted by multidisciplinary teams of lecturer-researchers and students from, mainly, Real Estate Management, Social Work & Social Services and Facility Management. It proved to be a rewarding combination: students of Social Work & Social Services had to study the physical aspect: the property, and students of Real Estate Management had to study the social perspective. 'The multidisciplinary approach worked well, with a spin-off to the degree programmes. The students also worked in groups,' says Rozema. The group also researched new forms of inhabitant participation in neighbourhood and village renovation projects. Rozema: 'I find the collaboration between professional area developers and the inhabitants, who know a lot about their environment, and who have all sorts of ideas, very interesting.' I view the inhabitants as a type of area developers, too.' www.hanze.nl/duurzamedorpen

Why would a multinational company do business with a company from Groningen? How can a middle-sized ICT company from the north of the Netherlands successfully compete with a mega competitor from the United States? These are exciting questions, which are all related to the viability of our economy. Professor Frank Jan de Graaf published a guide about this subject together with two co-writers: 'Noord-Europa als rolmodel. Succesvol ondernemen in een globaliserende wereld’ (Northern Europe as a Role Model. Successful Entrepreneurship in a Globalising World).
'What does a SME from the north of the Netherlands have to offer to buyers from the United States? What do we do differently and better than in China. What are our unique selling points?' De Graaf, Professor in International Business at the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Entrepreneurship of Hanze UAS, often encountered these issues during talks with the Chamber of Commerce and innovation centre Syntens. This was a reason for him to delve into the subject. 'We started studying the theory in order to list the weak and strong points of the Northern European model.' Based on their research, De Graaf and his partners came to a hopeful conclusion for the Northern and Western European business world. According to their analysis, the strength of the business world in this region lies in a unique business model with a focus on people.
The Rijnland Model, as it has been named, does not only revolve around making money, as opposed to the harsh market way of thinking, but also around people. It is precisely this attention to the well-being of employees, to a good relationship with clients, and to the quality of products

19
and services, which results in a power to compete in a globalising economy, according to De Graaf. 'The best products are made with highly-qualified people who can help think about things, and who will argue with you. In some business sectors in the United States, people can be fired like that. Employers and employees do not invest in each other in a situation like that. And there are many more countries where there is no dialogue between an employer and his employees, to say it mildly.' This is different in Northern Europe and this is the key to success. 'In the north of the Netherlands, there are some very innovative manufacturing companies. They do so well because they treat their employees fairly.'
If the business world of Northern Europe relies on its own strength and focuses on the human aspect, they may create opportunities and outdo the competition with high-quality products. Entrepreneurs find this message very inspiring, De Graaf notices during several meetings. But it does not mean that they know how to implement it. The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Entrepreneurship is now developing projects for specific companies and sectors to help them map out and strengthen their competitive force from this point of view. They regularly look to the east for inspiration. 'We can learn a lot from Germany, often more than from the United States.' www.hanze.nl/startup
