Two years ago, Monticello FireDepartment Chief ScottSchoonmaker came to his
members with an idea: to host the2014 Sullivan County VolunteerFirefighters Parade.
According to past chief Alan Kesten, one of the event organizers, “Wequickly formed a committee andbrought our plan to the countyFirefighters Association.”
Slated for Saturday, September 13,this year’s Parade will kick off at 2p.m. on Broadway, in front of St.Peter’s Church. This year’s event, though, will include tons of activitiesfor area youth, beginning with the 9a.m. truck inspection, which will takeplace on Sturgis Road in the village, near the ShortLine bus terminal. Itwill give everyone a chance to getclose to the apparatus.
The parade portion of the day-longevent will wind its way east onBroadway to the Monticello FireDepartment on Richardson Avenue, where as Kesten related, the paradewill disband.
But that’s not it.
“Once the parade actually dis-bands, we’ll have all kinds of events atthe firehouse,” explained Kesten.“We’ll have a bouncy house for thekids, we’re working on face painting, games and more... we’ll also have var-ious vendors there and local organi-zations on hand, food, beverage, livemusic with the Slam Allen Band andeven an area marching bands compe-

Once the procession winds its wayto Richardson Avenue, a marchingband competition, complete withprize money will take place, accom-panied by live music from band “TwoHour Delay,” from about 6:30 p.m. to7:30 p.m.

22F FIREMEN’S PARADE SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT SEPTEMBER 5, 2014
In April of 1874, the Village ofMonticello was visited by a majorfire, which destroyed the
Exchange Hotel, Hindley’s Saloon,Kent’s Barber Shop, and theRepublican Watchman newspaperoffice, Billing’s Flour and Feed Storeand Curley’s Hotel. This fire, morethan anything else, was the likelyimpetus for the formation of theMonticello Fire Department. Prior tothis, bucket brigades were used tofight fires in the village and they hadproven inadequate.
On March 8, 1875, the MonticelloFire Department was organized with82 charter members. Friend W.Johnson was appointed chief engi-neer on June 30, 1875 and John F.Tymeson was appointed chief engi-neer on August 23, 1875. The FireCompany at the time was made up oftwo companies: the Neptune EngineCompany and the Mountain HoseCompany. On February 26, 1876 theRescue Hook and Ladder Companywas formed with 124 members, noneof which belonged to the two other
companies (Village population at thetime was 912).
The first firehouse was the TownHall building in 1893. The first paidfireman was Albert Richardson in1936 with Edward Richardson hiredas a paid driver a year later.
Today, the firehouse is at 23Richardson Avenue in the village. TheMonticello Fire Department movedinto this location in 2007. Currently, there are four career firefighters;Director of Fire Safety James GerrardII, Keith Kurthy, WayneVanderMeulen Jr., and Chris Bastone.
The Monticello Fire Departmentprotects the entire Villageand the western portionof the Town of Thompson, which surrounds the vil-lage. This amounts toapproximately 65 squaremiles of district from onecentral firehouse.
The Department cur-rently operates with sixpieces of apparatus: a2012 Spartan/Four Guys
Heavy Rescue, a 2006 Pierce 104’Tower Ladder, a 2007 PierceContender 1500 gallon-per-minuteengine carrying 1000 gallons of water,a 1995 Pierce Saber 1250 gallon-per-minute engine carrying 1000 gallonsof water, a 1989 Pierce Arrow 1500gallon-per-minute engine carrying1000 gallons of water, a 1984 PierceArrow 1500 gallon-per-minuteengine carrying 1000 gallons of water,a 1996 Freightliner Technical RescueTruck, 2007 Chevrolet 3500 LightRescue, 1998 Fire Police Vehicle, anda 14 foot Technical Rescue trailer .
The Department has reverted backto traditional Redand White colorsfor the fivenewest apparatusversus the pub-licly unpopular“Lime-Yellow” ofthe older appara-tus. The appara-tus carry a total of4200 feet of 5-inch large diame-
ter supply hose, each having a fullcomplement of smaller diameterhose and other equipment needed toperform the various tasks required.Monticello firefighters are trainedand equipped to handle virtually anytype of emergency.
Currently, there are 65 active mem-bers, with approximately 150 mem-bers total on the rolls of the depart-ment. Line Officers of theDepartment are Chief ScottSchoonmaker, 1st Assistant Chief RayStevens, 2nd Assistant Chief AJWashington, Captain Pedro Agosto, and Lieutenant Jose Mora. Civil offi-cers are President Raul “Roy” Rojas.,Vice-President Jon Wells, SecretaryGeorge Kelley, and Treasurer DoriHuebner.
The department maintains a well-trained rescue team with a multitudeof rescue equipment including the“Jaws-of-Life” rescue tool. Most of therescue team members have beentrained in specialized technical res-cue involving confined spaces, build-ing collapse, trench rescue, and rope

Beautifully restored and preserved antique cars are also a big attraction at parades, a remem-brance of days gone by.
This antique firetruck dates back to the early 1900s, and was probably a big step up when itwas added to the fire service nearly 100 years ago.

Mass Casualty Incident Drill:
Summitville FD prepares for the worstSTORY AND PHOTOS
BY MARGARET BRUETSCH
The Summitville Volunteer FireDepartment ran its first MassCasualty Incident (MCI)
Emergency Drill this summer. The emergency incident took place
at the intersection of Firehouse Rd.and Depot Rd. just past the firehouse. The staged accident involved aschool bus, donated by Rolling V BusCompany, filled with kids and chap-erones, and two passenger cars.
The drill was more than just a prac-tice run for any real life MCI, it wasalso a chance to show how hard thevolunteer firefighters in the area workto make sure they’re ready to actwhen an emergency arises.
“It’s just some publicity for the FireDepartments,” Summitville FireChief Tim Koestler said regarding the
drill. “This is what volunteer firedepartments do.”
The sirens went off at the firehouseat 9:15 a.m. and the Summitville fire-fighters wasted no time springinginto action and quickly arriving onthe scene. Once the accident wasdeclared an MCI, surrounding areaemergency services arrived, includ-ing the Mamakating First Aid Squad, the Wurtsboro Fire Department, RockHill Ambulance, and both theEllenville Fire Department andEllenville First Aid & Rescue Squad.
Firefighters are usually the first responders to accidents, and in this simulation, prepare tomove injured victims from the car in the background. The firefighter in the foreground pre-pares to cut through metal – necessary when a wreck makes extraction difficult.
“There were a few glitches, butthat’s what we’re here for.”

The mass casualty drill is made as realistic as possible. A “pre-wrecked” car serves as a good simulator of what emergency responders willface at real incidents, and they get to practice working on victims in difficult confines.
Although it was only a drill, it waspure chaos. Victims moaned andgroaned as firefighters and emer-gency medical personnel worked tofree them from vehicles and care fortheir injuries at the on site triage sta-tion. Windshields were smashed, doors were taken off and victims wererushed to receive the care they need-

ed. In the end, the drill was a success
and the firefighters quickly worked toclean up the emergency area beforeheading back to the station.
“It went awesome,” Chief Koestlersaid afterward. “There were a fewglitches, but that’s what we’re here
for. Everything went really well, theEMS did great, the fire departmentdid great. This is why volunteers –why we – train all the time.”
And while this may have been thefirst Emergency Drill for Summitville,Chief Koestler hopes to have anotherdrill soon.
“Probably not until next year ormaybe in the fall,” he said.

The gift of life for Bryce
Neversink youth, 8, gets heart transplant
BY JEANNE SAGER
NEVERSINK — The Tues-
day night when life changed
for the Rogerson family was
just like any other.
With a planned two-hour
delay for the Tri-Valley
School District the next day,
8-year-old Bryce and 5-year-
old Bryan had been given a
pass to stay up late and watch
a movie together. Sixteen-
year-old Emily was doing
what teenagers do on a
school night. Dad Brian was
on a hunting trip in Alabama,
so mom Nicole was snuggling
in bed, watching TV by her-
self. And then the phone rang.
It was a pediatric nurse
familiar with little Bryce’s
congenital heart condition.
After nearly three years on
the transplant list, there was
a heart waiting for Bryce.
“I said ‘Are you kidding
me?’ ” Nicole recalls. “I was
literally skipping up and
down the hallway!”
It was a call the Rogersons
weren’t sure would ever
come. Bryce was diagnosed
with hypoplastic left heart
syndrome (HLHS) before he
was even born, after a routine
ultrasound at 18 weeks
picked up an anomaly.
HLHS – a syndrome in which
the left side of a child's heart
was underdeveloped – is one
of the three most common
heart issues a child can be
born with, but it can be fatal
if left untreated.
To increase the Bryce’s
chances, Nicole underwent
in utero surgery at just 26
weeks pregnant to open up a
hole in his heart to allow
blood to flow properly and
help him develop in the
womb. Ten days after he was
born in February 2005, Bryce
underwent his first open
heart surgery. At 8 months, he
had another, and in October
of 2008, a third open heart
surgery.
But in 2010 came a devas-
tating diagnosis. Bryce had
developed plastic bronchitis,
a condition of the lungs most
common in cystic fibrosis
patients. Rubbery chunks of
mucus had begun develop-
ing in his lungs, making him
struggle to breathe. Although
the issue presents itself in the
lungs, doctors put the blame
on his heart, which pumps
oxygenated blood to the
lungs. By 2011, doctors told the
Rogersons their best choice
would be to put Bryce on the
transplant list – for a heart. A
new heart, they told them,
would take pressure off the
lungs and hopefully allow
them to heal themselves.
On March 25, 2011, Bryce
was added to the transplant
list with what’s known as 1B
status, the second from the
top. At the time, doctors told
the Rogersons that listing
him at 1A – the highest and
most needy status – would
require Bryce to wait in a hos-
pital for a heart to be found.
But with Bryce able to take
his medication at home, the
Rogersons opted to keep him
in Neversink, to allow him to
continue attending school
and be with his family.
They were told it would
take six months to a year to
find him a heart.
On June 25, 2013, more
than two years later, his heart
hadn’t come. The Rogersons
moved their son up to 1A sta-
tus, the top of the transplant
waiting list.
At that time, doctors had
changed their mind and said
Bryce could stay home and
wait. They told the Rogersons
it would probably be a month
or two until a heart was
found. It was almost seven months
until the call came.
That was January 14, the
night Nicole called a friend to
watch Bryan and packed her
other two kids into the car to
fly over the roads to Morgan
Stanley Children’s Hospital at
Columbia Presbyterian in
New York City. Bryce was cry-
ing, Nicole recalls, but his
biggest worry was “how am I
going to turn in my home-
work?” “I told him your teacher
isn’t going to worry about
your writing assignment.”
Husband Brian had just
arrived in Alabama for his
hunting trip and couldn’t find
a flight north, so he rented a
car in Montgomery and
drove straight through the
night to Atlanta, Georgia, for
the earliest flight to
LaGuardia, a 6 a.m. that he
hoped would get him there in
time to see his little boy
before he went into surgery.
Brian’s plane left late, but
the fates aligned – because of
