Just a quickie this month as we have been away for over three weeks.
Good to see that the shop has survived during our absence though thanks to the “wine o’clock” habits of many Sulgrave residents, the wine shelves were looking a tad denuded on our return. Butemergency measures have been put in place and deliveries are on their way - so the shelves should be groaning with lots of new bargain wines by the time this newsletter hits the streets (watch out for a cracking New-Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and a bargain Prosecco).
For those who haven’t yet heard, Jeanette has a new grandson, Alexander James born on 10th October, so she must now be on full-time grannie duty down under.
Jackie has fitted seamlessly into the co-supervisor role and she and Tracey continue to run a very efficient ship (with the help, of course, of our crew of trusty volunteers).
The shop has just started promoting a “cheese of the week” so if there are any favourite cheeses that you would like the shop to stock – please let us know and we’ll do our best to oblige.
We are hoping to be able to offer fresh hand-made sandwiches and subs this month with a variety of fillings. We are sure they will be very popular.
With Christmas fast approaching (aaagh!!) we shall soon be taking Christmas orders so keep your eyes open for order-forms at the counter. And do let us know if you have any bright ideas for additional items you would like the shop to stock in the run-up to Christmas.
Stop press: We have just heard that the “Shop Christmas Tasting” will be held from 10 - 12 on the morning of Saturday 2nd December so be sure to be at the front of the queue.
Happy bonfire night

The Parochial Church Council (PCC), which is responsible forthe beautiful church of St. James the Less here in Sulgrave, with its recently restored organ, is currently looking for oneor two villagers with a Christian faith to take on the role ofchurchwarden.
As many of you will know, Shrimp Christy has finally decided to step down from thisrole after 20 years of incredible leadership and commitment to all things involved inour church from Christmas Bazaars to running services in the absence of our vicar.
The role of a churchwarden in a parish is very flexible. On election by parishioners,on an annual basis at the PCC AGM, they act as the “Bishop’s officers” and are viewedas the senior laypeople of the parish with a responsibility for assisting the vicar in thesmooth operation of the church.
In Sulgrave there are already many people involved in the operation of our church andwe are looking for two more villagers to join our team to complete the official teamwe require.
For more information please contact the vicar, Brian Fairbank on 768994, ShrimpChristy outgoing churchwarden on 760214 or Kate Miles, PCC Secretary on 760957.
The good news is that Shrimp is very happy to carry on with many of the roles she hascarried out so well over the years as churchwarden so the incoming churchwarden(s)duties will be less onerous than in some other churches.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Sulgrave and HS2
Thank you to everyone who attended the HS2 event organised by LucyApperly on 12th October. Many attended and put a range of questions to theHS2 representatives present. A report on the event is now on the villagewebsite (www.sulgrave.org).
The Parish Council was represented at the event and a question that came upseveral times was what is the Parish Council doing regarding HS2? To helpanswer, below is a summary of what we have done, are doing and intend to do:
We have:- Reviewed both the hybrid Bill and environmental statements to
understand the impacts on Sulgrave.
- Petitioned the House of Lords Select Committee and presented to themregarding the safety and travel disruption that is expected duringconstruction. We gained assurances that HS2 were working on a plan tomove a large amount of the materials along the HS2 route rather thanalong local roads, thus significantly reducing the traffic volumes. As aresult of this HS2 are legally required to keep us informed of developmentsof this plan.
- During petitioning it was confirmed that none of the roads to / fromSulgrave will be closed during or post construction. Fully surfacedtemporary roads will be built parallel to where these cross HS2 tomaintain access.
- Disseminated appropriate information via the website and newsletter asdetails become available with at least 8 online updates posted. To avoiddata overload we review and only post data of relevance to Sulgrave ornew information.
We are:- Attending HS2 engagement events. Sadly we cannot attend all events due
to time commitments, but we are fully informed as to the activities andattend when possible. The minutes of all meetings are reviewed to ensureimportant information is not missed. If any members of the communityattend these events we would love to hear your thoughts on what you hear.
Page 8
- On the appropriate mailing lists for HS2 community involvement activitiesand review all information received for relevant information.
- Actively progressing an application to the HS2 community engagementfund to allow renovation of the Village Hall, to create a much morepleasant and usable space for the village, funded by HS2.
- HS2 have recently appointed their Contractors who are now carrying outthe detailed design and planning for the construction, likely to begin in2020. We are opening new lines of communication with theseorganisations to be informed of developments and raise concerns as thedesign develops. We very much hope this engagement will help answermany of the questions residents have.
Many of these activities are done quietly in the background as part of thegeneral activities of the Parish Council and therefore may not be immediatelyvisible, but they are happening. Updates may appear few and far between butthis is driven by the pace of the project and the information we receive. A goodexample of this is the information presented by HS2 at the recent event waslargely two years old. The Design and Construction programme is such that anyupdated information may well be more than a year away.
The Parish Council believe that the time to stop HS2 happening has past, butmitigating the worst of its construction impacts is far from a lost cause. Thetime between now and the start of construction is our best chance to getmeasures in place that reduce the impact. By working with HS2 and theContractor we hope to secure meaningful improvements for all residents ofSulgrave and are actively working to achieve this and will continue to do sountil HS2 is completed.
There will always be more to do or different views on what we should be doing. If you wish to comment on any of the items above, or want us to do somethingwe are not, please come along to one of our meetings, drop us a line [email protected], or speak to one of the councillors. We are morethan happy to discuss your particular concerns.
