EXPERIENCE

Applied Sciences Group, Inc. Buffalo, New YorkMechanical Design Intern/ Researcher December 2013 - August 2014

• Designed and developed a novel Eye Gaze System to enable ALS patients to communicate by typing out words ona computer screen by using the movement of their eyes.

• Conducted experiments to determine the best positioning of the components parts to obtain optimum results bythe system.

• Custom designed and 3D printed fixtures to carry out the experiments with the component parts as they werevery small in size (smallest part 25*24*1 mm and largest part 37*24*1 mm).

• Designed and 3D printed a light weight, compact housing to package the component parts in their determinedorientations and distances from each other.

• Developed a mounting system to secure the housing on a pair of spectacles for ease of use.

• An extreme level of design customization was involved and since cost effectiveness of the entire system was a majorcriteria the designed parts were 3D printed in a MakerBot Replicator 2.

• The 3D CAD designs were developed in SolidWorks 2013.

Design Analytics Research and Technology Laboratory Buffalo,New YorkGraduate Research Assistant January 2013- August 2014

· A Graph Grammar Based Approach to 3D Print and Assemble Furniture January 2013 - August 2014

• Created a novel approach to enable users to segment large 3D CAD models into smaller components and 3D printthese components in the limited print volume of commercially available 3D printers.

• Developed graph grammar rules used to create assembly instructions for the segmented parts.

· Concept Design of a Novel 3D Printer December 2013 - August 2014

• Created a detailed design for an open source hobby level 3D printer.

• Designed the z-axis mechanism of the 3D printer based on sarrus linkage mechanism.

Page 2: Sulabh Gupta

• The designed z-axis mechanism allows a build height of 18 cm which is far more compared to the commerciallyavailable 3D printers.

• The X-Y planar movement of the 3D printer was based on a never before used 4 bar linkage mehcanism enablinglarger and faster prints.

• The completed design has a build volume of 24*48*18 cm which is a phenomenal increase in build size.

• Reduced manufacturing price of the 3D printer by making most of the parts 3D printable (estimated price 805.61$).

• Collaborated with a team of 4 members and contributed ideas and solutions for designing other components of the3D printer.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Chennai,IndiaProgrammer Analyst September 2010 -August 2012

• Conferred with system analysts, engineers and programmers to design system and obtain information on projectlimitation and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.

• Mentored 4 new employees in programming and solving recurring issues.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

· Design and Fabrication of Trocar Insertion Simulation Device November 2013 - December 2013

• Designed and fabricated a Trocar Insertion Simulation Device to train surgeons on direct trocar insertion technique.

• Fabricated the parts for the device in a machine shop.

• Used CNC milling, Vertical Drill press, Lathe and many other hand tools to fabricate the required parts.

• The 3D CAD Design was created using Autodesk Inventor Professional.

· Interior Design Augmented Reality Mockup January 2013 - April 2013

• Created the layout of the room prior to its construction in real world.

• Generated an immersible augmented enviornment of a room using ARToolkit and OpenGL(API) .

• Enabled the user to virtually setup the interiors of the room for optimum work efficiency.

• Mounted a webcam on an eMagin Z800 Head Mounted Display(HMD) to create an immersible experience.

· A DMAIC approach to reduction of Elevator wait time October 2012 - December 2012

• Used Six Sigma DMAIC methodology to identify issues causing increase in Elevator wait time at Veterans AffairsMedical Center, Buffalo, New York.

• Implemented process improvement using tools such as Control charts, Statistical Process Control, Cause and EffectDiagram, Pareto Charts and FMEA.

• Made recommendations which forecasted a reduction in the elevator wait time.
