HEADING FOR DISASTERAn aeroplane was about to crash; there were 5 passengers on board, but only 4 parachutes.
The first passenger to speak was Simon Cowell. He said, “I have my own reality shows and I am the smartest person in TV history, so people don’t want me to die”. He took the first pack and jumped out of the plane.
The second passenger to act was Richard Branson. He said, “I’m a wealthy business-man and anyway this is my plane”. And on that, he grabbed the second pack and jumped.
The third passenger, Wayne Rooney, yelled “I am the best footballer in the country and I am the smartest ever in the history of our great sport, some even call me the ‘Anointed One.’” So he snatched up the pack next to him and jumped out.
The fourth passenger, an elderly vicar said to the other passenger, a 10-year-old schoolgirl, “I have lived a full life and served my God the best I could. I will sacrifice my life and let you have the last parachute.”
The little girl said. “That’s okay Vicar. There’s a parachute left for you too. The world’s smartest footballer, the anointed one, took my school-satchel.

The Editor’s bitSo Gaddafi is gone from Libya (well life actually), and now so have Westlife (breaking up at the end of their tour), on the same day too, who would have thought it.
The Euro hovers on the brink of viability and a bunch of people are camping on the steps of St. Pauls in London with no clear idea of what the heck they want. But they want less of it and they want it now. Or maybe they want more of it and want it now; it all looks like a ragbag of ideologies vying for control and convincing no one at all.
Our glorious government thinks it does know what we want or at least what they are going to give us. That is taxes, more taxes and for good measure, some more taxes. What they won’t let us have is any of the promises they made to get elected. Bastards. Well at least they can’t tax musical creativity.
So this month we have a CD review, your usual gig listings, some questionable jokes and local musical and arts news. I hope it will keep you entertained for at least a while and allow you to forget about the nonsense that goes on.

THE QUICKSILVER MAIL (01935 424721) is on Hendford Hill in Yeovil. Music in November promises to be as vibrant as ever. Start the month with some karaoke style en-
tertainment on Friday 4th. On Friday 11th, The Fat Marrow Blues Band with Bruce Soord & Steve Kitch are playing in the function room with the aim of raising funds for Yeovil District Hospital, chip in as generously as you can will you? On Friday 18th, Paul Smith will be performing for you in the bar and there is, we understand, a charity gig in the function room on the same evening. Unfortu-nately we do not have full details for this one. On Thursday 24th, a new band is playing a free gig in the function room; it’s the Agus-taWestland House Band. We understand that Dave, the drummer from Storm is in the band and they will be playing rock style. Best go along and check them out! If something a bit jazzier is more your style then check out the Mark Webb Quartet perfoming in the function room on Friday 25th, tickets are £5. Just into December, on Saturday 3rd, 3 Daft Monkeys with support from Bag Of Rats will delverr a fine mix of rocking, rootsy, folky music with style and verve. What more could you ask for? Tickets are £10.

THE BEACH CAFÉ BAR (01935 414995) The Beach Café Bar in Yeovil normally has live mu-sic on Sunday afternoons/evenings and some Friday evenings. THE LABOUR CLUB (01935 471138 ) on Central Road in Yeovil has regular weekend live entertainment for you to enjoy as well as regular bingo sessions (when lunches are also available). It’s a busy month for entertainment in November and the fun begins on Friday 4th with a country and western show starring Nashville Jack. On Saturday 5th, Out-rage are the band performing and then on Sunday 6th, you can join and create the music, or at least sing along at the karaoke session. On Saturday 12th, Cover To Cover play all your favourite popular tunes from recent decades and then on Friday 18th there is a Rock n Roll evening with Ogri & The Cafe Rac-ers delivering the juice to get you jiving. On Saturday 19th, The Rocking ‘60s return and then on Sunday 20th there is another karaoke session. Sneakers are the band for you on Saturday 26th and it’s karaoke again on the 27th. Just into December there is a Christmas Cabaret (that’s an early one!) event featuring four differents acts in the one show and the ticket price includes a buffet.

Music in November begins with The Rocking ‘60s who perform on the 5th and then on the 12th it’s The Frettmen who play the music for you. Move on to the 19th and you’ll find that it’s Penny Arcade who entertain you and then to close the month of November, it’s 60s Revisited on the 26th. Just into December on the 3rd, Footloose are sure to have you up and dancing.

On Sunday 6th at 6pm it’s Elvis 56; vintage Elvis performed in style. Then on Sunday 20th, it’s the original Bandless Rudeboy himself, Lewis starting at 6pm. You can also join in with the regular karaoke sessions on Saturday night with Cookie.
WAYNE’S BAR (01935 851804) is just outside Yeovilton air base (actually Camel Cross, West Camel, BA22 7RA). Things look a little bit quieter for November on the musical front. The next event we know about happens on Christmas Eve when Steve Roberts will be your performer. THE MERMAID INN (01935 817065) at the top of Bristol Rd. Sherborne is now known as THE Music Venue of Sherborne. The only gig we have listed for November happens on the 5th when Bleedin’ Hartz get you rocking. THE PLUME OF FEATHERS (01935 816569) is on Half Moon Street in Sherborne. Music at the Plume starts on Wednesday 2nd when you can take part in a Jazz workshop and learn to play; it starts at 7pm. Thursday is the regular Open Mic Night that start at 9pm; the first one in No-vember is on the 3rd. It’s Jakey Zee performing for you on Friday 4th and then on Thursday 10th there’s an-other Open Mic Night. If you feed beer to a quadruped what you could get is a Wonkey Don-key; well you do on the 11th anyway. Night on Thursday 17th is followed by The Floaters playing for you on the 18th from 9pm. Back to the Jazz on Tuesday 22nd when there is a Jazz Jam starting at 7pm followed on Thursday 24th by the Open Mic Night. For the last Friday in November, the music is delivered by GTI, on the 25th. There is a Jazz workshop where you can learn Jazz starting at 7pm on Wednesday 30th November. Just into December there is an Open Mic Night on the 1st followed on Friday 2nd by live music from The Average Wage Band (who win my award for best band name of the month). Finally on Saturday 3rd December get tuned in for a Jazz Club Gig; The Sound Of Blue Note. It starts at 7.30pm £12 on the door.
THE DAVID HALL (01460 240340) The David Hall is on Roundwell Street in South Petherton. Music at the David Hall this month begins with Coope Boyes & Simpson on Saturday 5th. They sing acappella harmonies in the Folk-Country tradition but with sharp and clever lyrics. Tickets are £16 and doors open at 8pm. On Thursday 10th, female duo, Chris While and Julie Matthews will bring their multi-instrumental, singer-songwriter skills to the David Hall. Allways popular at this venue and with good reason; tickets are £15, doors open 8pm. In a co-promotion with Sherborne Jazz, the Deirdre Cartwright Group plus Emily Remembered on Saturday 12th. This is a double bill featurng: Deirdre Cartwright (guitar); Kathy Dyson (guitar) with Alison Rayner (bass); Winston Clifford (drums); Sarah P. (vocals). Guitarists Deirdre Cartwright and Kathy Dyson met in 1984 and realised that they were the only two professional women Jazz guitarists in the UK. Over 25 years later, they’re still the only two. Emily Remembered invokes the spirit of the late, great New York Jazz guitarist, Emily Remler, who died of heart failure in 1990 at the age of 32. Tickets are £12 and doors open at

Steeleye Span perform at The Octagon
8pm.On Saturday 19th go to hear singer songwriter Martyn Joseph, his most recent album has been enthusiastically recieved by BBC’s Bob Harris. On Wednesday 23rd,Thursday 24th, Friday 25th & Saturday 27th, the Combined Arts Society present the play ‘BEDROOM FARCE’ by Alan Ayckbourn. Tickets £6. Steeleye Span are one of the most influential names in folk-rock and on Friday 25th, David Hall presents the group at The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil. Tickets are available from the Octagon and cost £19. Just into December on the 3rd, Boy Le Monti will perform their fantastic ska -rock-steady music. Tickets £9. KINGS HEAD (01460 72973) in Merriot has the Relics rocking the pub on Saturday 5th followed by the Flatland Boogie Band on the 12th. On Saturday 19th The Intruders bring you some rock classics. On the 26th Justin Daish plays some pop & rock favourites including the Shadows and then, just into December, Bad Apples are your band on the 3rd.
THE SQUARE & COMPASS (01823 480467) at Windmill Hill, Ashill (between Taunton & Ilminster) has the superb Barn venue for live bands. There is just one gig in November but it’ll be a great one if you love Dire Straits. On Friday 25th, Dire Streets will recreate the classic tracks of this most popular band. In early December The Blues Band (with Paul Jones) will be performing on the 9th. Book early, this event will be a sell out!
NO.10 CAFÉ BAR (01308 420032) No.10 is on East Street in Bridport (post code DT6 3LF). On Tuesday 1st start your musical journey with Declan Duffy & Lauren Glover followed on the 2nd by Jack Harrison & The Dharma Bums. (I think Jack Kerouac Buddhism is optional). On Thurs-day 3rd, local man Logan Carter performs the music for you and the on the 4th with fiddle and Guitar it’s Jack Daniels & Benny Wain. A father daughter combination? That’ll be Lauren & Phil Rosenberg on Tuesday 8th. On the 9th, Shelby’s Elbows are your boys and the on the 10th it’s Jonathan Cotton who will make a Thursday evening more bearable. It’s Andy Grant (solo) on Friday 11th and then a lunchtime session with Rob Koral & Zoe Schwarz on the 12th. I’m pretty sure that Mutter & Chums will be playing on the afternoon (rather than evening) of the 13th and then on the 15th go country style with Steve Black & Alan West. On Wednesday 16th, Lucy 9mm deliver some raw musical emotion and then on the 17th, your old favourite, Jinder will be performing. On the 18th Mutter returns with Clive Ashley and

then on Saturday 19th, (Lunchtime) expect Cuban style jazz from Millie Riquelme. On Tuesday 22nd, Free Spirits means music not alcohol but it’s still sure to great. On the 23rd the music is from Vela, but who they are or what they do is a mystery to your Editor. Join in with the Howl Open Mic Night on Thursday 24th and listen out for The Wishbones on Friday 25th. He’s a busy chap but making music is the thing that he loves and you can hear him perform on Tuesday 29th, it’s Elijah Wolf. To close the month, the music on the 30th comes from Ribbonman. THE ROPEMAKERS (01308 421255) is on West Street in Bridport (DT6 3QP). Your music at the Ropemakers begins on Friday 4th with a ska extravaganza from the Guns of Navarone starting at 9:15pm. This eleven piece outfit will get even the the most reluctant dancer up and moving. On Saturday 5th more Latin/Ska style mu-sic from Mañana with a sound that combines off-the-wall brass sounds with bass heavy grooves; Mañana play music to make people dance and feel good. Time to get rootsy on Friday 11th with Hip Route, fine evening of music is guaranteed. Con-tinuing the roots theme on Saturday 12th, Willie & The Bandits return to the Ropemakers after their travels abroad. This band is just top quality, check them out here http://youtu.be/7MAjaEg6dkM.Are you ready for some medieval pirate folk rockers? If you are then get along to see the Dolmen on Friday 18th. If punk is more your thing then listen out for The Krays on Saturday 19th. Trad Jazz is all set for Monday night on the 21st when the Sunset Cafe Stompers do their thing from 8:15pm. Brighton based folks/roots sensation Zora & The Tatsmiths perform on Friday 25th, Guitar, fiddle, sometimes a sax and songs with titles like “Social Wanker”, should be interesting. The last musical event in November happens on Saturday 26th when the Seatrees play lots of your favourite rock tracks.There is more information about the pub on their web site http://www.theropemakers.com.
THE HOPE & ANCHOR (01308 422160) is on St. Michael’s Lane in Bridport. In November, the music begins on Sunday 13th at 4.30pm when the Backstreet Band deliver a rocking afternoon set. If you’d like to join in and make music then turn up for the Jam Session that starts at 4.30pm on Sunday 20th. The Lady GaGa nights at the Hope & Anchor have been hugely successful and so on Saturday 26th, there is another chance to listen to the Lady GaGa tribute; it’s an evening gig. Last but not least, John De Barra is your man with the music on Sunday 27th at 4.30pm.

COURTNEY PINE AT OCTAGON THEATRECourtney Pine is best known as a saxophonist but is a multi-instrumentalist, also playing the flute, clarinet, bass Clarinet and keyboards. On his 2011 album, Europa, he plays almost exclusively bass clarinet.
On Friday 18th November he will be at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil as part of his first National tour of a major new work EUROPA. Courtney Pine creates a powerful statement that reflects the vibrancy, innovation and spirit of the continent of his birth. In 1987 Courtney Pine arrived on the British music scene with one plan, to take jazz music to a wider audience. His self-determination, drive and research took him beyond British shores and deep into the European continent where the seeds of this project began to take root.
Celebrating 24 years of award winning music making, Courtney ventures still further with this new work, his first all Bass Clarinet set and presents the latest chapter in the fascinating evolution of one of this country’s most original musicians. DOG FOR SALEA guy is driving around the back woods in Nottingham and he sees a sign in front of a broken farmhouse house: “Talking Dog For Sale” He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.“You talk?” he asks.“Yep,” the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says ‘So, what’s your story?’
The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young...I wanted to help the government, so I told MI6. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.”
“I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed-up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.
“Ten quid,” the guy says.
“Ten quid? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”
“Because he’s a feckin liar, he’s never been out of the yard”.

STATE OF UNDRESS - CHARITY MUSIC RELEASEIt’s 90 years since the Poppy Appeal was started. It’s 93 Years since the end of the ‘War to End All Wars’. Except it didn’t. Here we are nearly a century later with major conflicts taking place in many parts of the world. Mostly, ordinary people have no part in the decision to go to war. They are caught up in world events and global politics over which they have no control. And, yes, there are times when a country has to make a stand, when you have to fight to protect justice, dignity and freedom. But no matter how just the cause – in war, everybody loses. And children and the vulnerable lose the most. This is the message of the song Take Me to the Leader performed by State of Undress that rocky rootsy fiddlesome band from Dorset. They are donating all profits from downloads and single CD sales to the charities ‘War Child’ and ‘The Royal British Legion.’ Take Me to the Leader was written some years ago by Dorset musician, the late Peter ‘Foz’ Foster, who was a great friend and mentor to State of Undress. Pete had been a well-re-spected musician in the 60s and 70s, playing with the likes of Ralph McTell and Cat Stevens. Charlie Rose, lead singer with the band explains: ‘It was Pete who, in the early days, encouraged Alan (State of Undress guitarist) and myself with our song-writing and performing. ‘Take Me to the Leader’ was a song Pete had written before we met him and we were so honoured when he asked us to record it. He loved this version and we know he would have been delighted that we have put it out as a single to raise money for these two very important charities.’ Alan Rose continues: ‘Although State of Undress is mostly known for our uptempo, fiddle-infused music, we do perform some more thought-pro-voking songs. Take Me to the Leader is a track that we play at special gigs and it’s a highlight of our annual Christmas show. We play it then as part of a set-piece with a reading about the football match in the trenches on Christmas Eve in World War I. It’s always a highly-charged, poignant mo-ment and gets a great response from the audience.‘ Although the band recorded Take Me to the Leader some time ago and it has been available as an album track, this year’s very special Poppy Appeal made it seem the right time to put it out as a single. SKIMMITY HITCHERS CD REVIEWDoctors give millions of prescriptions each year for anti-depressants like Prozac. Now there is an alternative, a pint of cider (preferably scrumpy style) and the new Skimmity Hitchers CD, Game, Set & Natch. Guaranteed to lift the lowest mood, boost the serotonin, soften the hardest hard heart and generally buck you up; this album will have you smiling and singing along in no time.
Raw and earthy lyrics put to tunes that sound familiar (Johnny Cash, 10CC and others that the band describe as having been borrowed with love), played on guitar, accor-dion, drums and kazoo. How the hell they get away with borrowing tunes is beyond me but the words they put to them are pure genius. The lyrics of ‘People Arrr strange’ are a complete piss take, “Your brothers your cousin your sisters’s your niece”. Every song is a celebration of what makes the West Country wonderfully different.
It’s fair to say that the Skimmitty Hitchers take a very local view of life and are likely to regard anyone from as far away as Hampshire as irredeem-ably foreign. This is down and dirty, good and earthy music to get you smiling once again. The height of subtlety and sophistication it is not; it is unlikely to appeal to Gin & Tonic drinkers or those who only buy Kristal champagne “Darling”. Which is precisely why you should embrace its earthy charm. As the band might say “I loves it”.

HOME FROM THE WARDuring the Second World War, Warrant Officer JC Perkins took part in the raid on the famous French Dockyard Saint Nazaire. During the raid he was wounded and lost his right eye. After extensive hospitalisation he was released, having been issued with glass eye.
At his resettlement interview, he expressed the desire to pass on his experience and thus wanted to become a teacher. He was duly awarded a course on the forthcoming TEC, which was due to last for 3 years. He went through the course with flying colours until the last test, which was a live session with teenage boys and girls.
The lesson went smoothly, with the children paying rapt attention to this commanding man. Suddenly he broke off and sneezed loudly, and his glass eye popped out of his head. he calmly bent down, picked it op from where it had rolled under the desk a one of the pupils, pulled out his handkerchief, wiped it off and replaced it in the eye socket,
The children gaped amazed at this exhibition of coolness and stood to give him a round ap-plause as he ended the lesson.
The remarks on his report read “Very good teacher, but inclined to let his eyes wander”.
FRAN NORTON AT DAVID WEST GALLERY The final exhibition of the year ath the David West Gallery in the Town Mill, Lyme Regis, is titled ‘Unbound’ and is by Fran Norton. It runs from 26th November 2011 until 3rd January 2012.
Fran Norton’s work arises from the multiple roles, activities and settings of everyday life, and references the body, motherhood, geol-ogy, abjection and the material world. She is concerned with the innate and attained and how built-in unconditioned reflexes, common to the human species, account for universal elements of artistic behaviour and appreciation.
Pared down to the most basic process and product, varnish and hair, a surface and a sharp instrument, Fran seeks an intercultural visual language unbound by specific time, place or social order. Both concave and convex, her bradawl drawings intricately creep and multiply, territorialising the thick white paper.

APPALACHIAN ROOTSStompin’ Dave brings another great night of music from the USA to Bridport’s Electric Palace on Wednesday 16th November. Following a packed night at The Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis and a sell out at Dorchester Arts Centre for Dave with The Whitetop Mountaineers, from Virginia, this time it’s the turn of Appalachian Roots from North Carolina.
Appalachian Roots is a duo show featuring Ira Bernstein and Riley Baugus. Their per-formances are a dynamic mix of traditional dance, song, and instrumental music from the southern Appalachian region of the US, with a few international twists thrown in. Concerts include percussive flatfooting and buckdancing, rhythm tap dancing, French-Canadian step dancing, English clogging, South African boot dancing, hambone, fid-dle tunes, and fiddle sticks by Ira; southern Appalachian songs and ballads, old-time banjo and fiddle tunes, and mountain preaching by Riley; and a good dose of fiddle and banjo. Appalachian Roots is an old-time music and dance variety show chock full of humour and skill.
Support comes from Stompin’ Dave himself who has organised this concert. Recently described in the Daily Telegraph as “a master…a formidable musician and a true original.” The performance starts at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm.
