FEBRUARY 2017 Voice SUGAR SUBSTITUTES Because there are so many sugar substitutes on the market, it can be difficult to decide on the best one for your lifestyle. is decision is especially important for the millions of people who live with dia- betes. e following is a list of some of the most common artificial sweeteners and how they affect your blood sugar levels: 1. AGAVE NECTAR – Agave nectar is a concentrated sugar syrup that is a vegan alternative to honey. Although it has twice as many calories as table sugar, it has a lower glycemic index, meaning that it is safer in moderation for people living with diabetes. And, being 1.5 times sweeter than table sugar, people tend to use less of it. Still, the American Diabetes Association lists agave nectar as “a sweetener to limit.” 2. ASPARTAME – Aspartame is produced by linking aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two amino acids. It’s known by its brand names, Equal and NutraSweet. It can be found in soſt drinks, dairy, candy, fruit spreads and various other foods. It is also available in packets that can be added to coffee and tea. Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is acceptable for people with diabetes since it has no effect on blood glucose levels. 3. STEVIA – Derived from the South American stevia plant, its brand names include PureVia, Truvia and SweetLeaf Sweetener. It can be found in drinks, desserts, gum, baked goods, candy, yo- gurt and in packets for use in beverages. Stevia is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar and does not affect blood sugar levels, so it is safe for people who have diabetes. 4. SUCRALOSE (SPLENDA) – Sucralose, or Splenda, is a no-calorie sugar substitute found in many processed foods and used as a general purpose sweetener (found in small yellow packets wher- ever coffee and tea are served). Splenda is 600 times sweeter than refined sugar and not very safe for individuals with diabetes, due to its carbohydrate content. According to research, Splenda contains about 1 gram of carbs per teaspoon, which means it could affect blood sugar if it’s not consumed in moderation. People who have diabetes should limit their intake of Splenda. ONLINE BANKING HAS BEEN UPGRADED! If you haven’t already checked it out - now is the time! Because there are so many sugar substitutes on the market, it can be difficult to decide on the best one for your lifestyle. This decision is especially important for the millions of people who live with dia-betes. The following is a list of some of the most common artificial sweeteners and how they affect your blood sugar levels:

1. Still, the American Diabetes Association lists agave nectar as “a sweetener to limit.”

It can be found in soft drinks, dairy, candy, fruit spreads and various other foods. It is also available in packets that can be added to coffee and tea. The American Heart Association wants to help everyone live longer, healthier lives so they can enjoy all of life’s precious moments. And we know that starts with taking care of your health. American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is a great way to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and com-munities involved. Together, we can build a culture of health where making the healthy choice is the easy choice.   Why? Because Life is Why.

Did you know? The first American Heart Month, which took place in Feb-

ruary 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963.

The Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating Febru-ary as American Heart Month.

At that time, more than half the deaths in the U.S. were caused by cardiovascular disease.

While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, it’s important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.3 million deaths each year.

Sturgis Rapid CityAt our November party, the VIP members request-

ed to play VIPGO. It is one of their favorite games to play and so we decided to play in January. Nine mem-bers showed up to play three games and each game the winner received a prize. They were BIG chocolate bars with gifts cards from Perkins, Colonial House, and Out-back Steak House. To win the prize in the first game they just had to get their numbers called in a row. To win the second game, they had to get an “X” on their card. Finally, to win the third game, they had to black-out their card! The members had a great time and really enjoyed the food!

We had a great December with the holidays upon us. On Friday, December 2nd, in conjunction with the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce Winter Frostival and Parade of Lights, we invited all of our VIP customers to join us in the bank for coffee, cocoa and donuts. We had about 10 attendees and all gathered in our confer-ence room to enjoy some treats and conversation. This also gave our VIPs the opportunity to meet our new Bank President, Dusty Morehead. As each of them left, they were given a poinsettia to take home with them.

LeadSeven VIPs enjoyed several games of VIPGO and

received a $5 bill for coming through the winter snow for their prize. Everyone thought that was great. We visited about 2017 VIP events, enjoyed several treats and introduced our new flex teller, Cathy Manderfeld, to all the VIPs.

Valentine Lunch will be at the Stampmill on Feb. 14th. Hope everyone can attend.

January 18th began our monthly Wednesday VIP events for the New Year.

On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, we invite all of our VIPs to come join us in

the morning for coffee and fresh donuts from Weimer’s bakery. We will have dif-ferent surprises and activities going on

each month so we encourage all to come join us. It’s a great time to get together and share some conversation and get to

know each other.

We hope to see you on February 15th!

HuronTen VIP members and family, along with escort, Leann Dramstad, escaped the cold South Dakota winter on January

26th for a fabulous 10 day trip to the Hawaiian Islands. After meeting up with other VIP members in Denver, the group headed to Honolulu and spent two days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the island of Oahu before boarding our cruise ship - the Pride of America. We sailed the islands of Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii, and returned to Oahu. Be sure to check out next month’s newsletter for a recap and pictures of our adventure with the VIP Club and Trips!

On December 23rd over 20 VIP Club members joined us for a Holiday Brunch held from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Our menu included cinnamon rolls, a meat/cheese tray, a veggie tray and a fruit tray with dips and then a choice of either coffee or spiced cider. People made repeat visits to the buffet table so we are quite sure that no one went away hungry. Poinsettias were given out as door prizes. We drew names for them along with two Christmas wreaths from the Newell Festival of Trees Auction. The attendance exceeded the space in our conference room but we had extra seating in the lobby. Thank you to all who joined us! Be watching for our next VIP event.

Our VIP Spotlight is on CAROL (URBAN) TSCHETTER, who has lived her entire life in Huron. She grew up on a farm west of Huron, attended country school for eight years, graduated from Huron High School and attended Huron College for one year. In 1962, she married Melnor Tschetter and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage prior to his death in 2015.

Carol worked as a bookkeeper for Mick’s Milling for 10 years prior to be-ginning work at the City of Huron in various capacities for over 27 years. She retired as Deputy Finance Officer in April of 2013.

Her daughter Sandra, a 3rd grade teacher, lives with her husband, Terry, and their sons Jonathan and Joshua in Papillion, NE. Her daughter Sharyl, who works for Wells Blue Bunny, lives with her husband, Jim, and their daughter Grace and stepson Michael, in LeMars, IA.

A unique nativity set Carol purchased in Alaska with the native Alaskan animals.

Since her retirement, Carol has gone on many motor coach trips to California, Indiana to Amish country, Branson and Minneapolis, as well as several day trips. She also enjoyed the land and cruise tour to Alaska with the VIP Club last August, how-ever, bus trips are her favorite. Carol has several interesting collections of snowmen, angels and has 23 different Nativity sets, some of which are pictured here. She is al-ways looking for a unique set on her travels. She also has a knack for making delicious cake balls and spends lots of time making them for weddings, showers, birthdays or just for a great treat, which are always a hit when she makes them for our VIP bus trips! In her spare time, she enjoys doing Sudoku puzzles, tending to her beautiful flowers and taking in basketball games.

Thank you Carol for being a VIP member and sharing your story with us.
