Community News, Events, and
Activities.
Sugar Hill Gazette
What’s New at Sugar Hill Farewell summer and hello fall.
September brings the last round on heat
waves and ushers in the crisp days of fall,
but that is not slowing us down at all.
There are many great events and
activities going on this month so be sure
to read your activity calendars and the
trips and events information page and
signup early! We have some fun
celebrations as well, chillin and grillin, and
Octoberfest (will have door prizes, beer,
and best dressed prizes). Pub Night will
bring Bill Parkers music show. So check
out what’s happening and join us.
We have a few house keeping things to
go over as well. First Flu Shots will be
given here on campus on Wednesday
September 12th in the coffee shop starting
at 9:00am. You must preregister with
Gina. Please remember it is highly
recommended that you get your flu shot.
Starting September 1st all manicure and
pedicure appointments must be made
with Gina directly. Also due to the holiday
there will be no nail services on Monday
September 3rd. Also due to the holiday
recycling will be done on Tuesday
September 4th and the VNA Blood
Pressure checks will be done on
Tuesday September 4th at 8:00am in the
lilac room.
There has been an increasing issue with
the dining reservation signup book and
trips signup board, please follow the
following guidelines.
Dining and to go service require an advanced reservation and completed menu choice.
Dining reservations close 48 hours prior to service. If you are late signing up you must go through Gina or Jen to be added. Do not write on a closed reservation.
Only write your name on any signup sheets and do not remove anyone else’s name.
Do not write anything on signup sheets, like pickup locations, it leads to miscommunications. If you need to make a special request please do it with the appropriate staff member in person.
There are sign up deadlines for all events, trips and dining. Signups are stamped closed, when the deadline for the event has come. If you write your name on after it has been closed, we cannot guarantee you will be able to be served.
Thank you for your understanding and
cooperation. Any questions please see
Christina, Gina or Jen.

Dolores “Dodie” Stephens grew up in the village of Brewster NY. She was one of 4 children, she had 2 older sisters and a younger brother. Dodie enjoyed her country upbringing and has a deep and fond love for her village of Brewster. Dodie married her husband, Mallory, who she had grown up with, the week after he graduated Medical school, in 1954. They have been married for 63 years.
They have 2 children, a son and a daughter. Dodie and Mallory spent most of their younger years in New York, as that is where Mallory’s medical practice was. They retired to New Hampshire because their son had moved to Wells M.E. and their daughter to southern NH and they wanted to be centrally located to them. They settle in Tuftonboro and lived there for 20 years before moving to Sugar Hill.
Dodie has always been an avid learner and attended junior college in Virginia and went back to college after her children where grown. She loves to cook and be creative. She is very talented in knitting, needle work, painting and sculpting. She likes working with her hands and staying active. You can often find Mallory and Dodie walking or playing table tennis.
Probably some of the most
interesting things about Dodie
is that she is a published author of n 3 books. When asked if she had always wanted to be a writer she said no. Dodie said that she didn’t get excited about writing a book until she came to NH. She published her first book in 2004 entitled “Those Who Served; Those Who Waited” which is a collection of veteran’s stories and home front stories from World War I.
Her Second book was published in 2009, entitled “Tonetta Lake” which is a memoir. It is about her life and wonderful history of Brewster. Her third book was just published this year and is entitled “Water for the Troops” which is about her father Capt. William Ross Beal. Her father left his water drilling family business in 1942 and volunteered at the age of 45 to enlisted and serve his country. The book tells his story of how he and his team of 16 men went drilling wells in remote areas in foreign countries, to provide our solders with the vital water they needed.
Dodie was recognized and received the “Life Time Award”, for her work as a docent at the Wright Museum. She has been working there since 2002.
When asked what she likes best about living here at Sugar Hill she said “the friendly people and the wonderful dinning”.

Jennifer moved to Ossipee almost 8 years ago from southeastern MA. She is married to husband Jason and has two sons, Trent 23 and Kyle 14.
Jennifer completed her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a healthcare concentration this month at Southern New Hampshire University.
Jennifer enjoys spending time with her family, doing puzzles by the fire on cold winter days, and tending to her flower and veggie gardens.
In her spare time she works on home renovations, and has a great eye for design.
Jennifer is an animal lover and currently has three dogs (Boris, Bella & their daughter Butters), two ducks, nine chickens, and three love birds.
Jennifer worked at Huggins Hospital for nearly two years when the opportunity arose to come to Sugar Hill. She was excited to take the position here as it was more in line with her schooling.
When asked what she likes best about working here, she said getting to know the residents and their great life stories and her co-workers as we all make a great team.

Expressing Gratitude
Reflect upon your present blessings, of which
every man has plenty, not on your past
misfortunes, of which all men have some.
~ Charles Dickens
Those of us fortunate enough to have been gifted with
a long and full life recognize the importance of Mr.
Dickens’ words. Through our many experiences, we
have learned that there is always good to be had with
the bad and vice versa. The ability to focus on
blessings and be thankful for them helps us weather
any storms we may encounter along the way. Start off
this month, if you are not already doing so, with a daily
gratitude, and see how good you feel at the end of the
month. We bet you’ll want to continue.
Day 1
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for the new day and
all its possibilities. Each day is a new opportunity. We
may make resolutions on January 1, but every day
offers us a chance to decide how to spend our time.
How do you hope to use this day? Will you join a fun
activity, learn something new, and be kind to a
neighbor?
Day 2
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for encouragement
that I give and receive. Everyone encounters
challenges in life, and we all sometimes need
encouragement to get through difficult times. Knowing
that a friend, neighbor, or staff member cares about us
and believes we can overcome the challenges we face
can make us stronger. Do you feel encouraged by the
people around you? Can you offer encouragement to
anyone today?
Day 3
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for servicemen and
women. Thousands of men and women serve our
country in the armed forces. They are charged with
protecting us, but they also help many people at home
and abroad during emergencies. Have you served in
the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard?
What would you like to say to those who are serving
today?
Day 4
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for shelter.
There are some things we can easily take for
granted, and having a roof over our heads is
one of them. Shelter is so important to our
safety and well-being. We may think about it
only on stormy days or cold winter nights, but
having shelter is something we can be thankful
for every day.
Day 5
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for wisdom.
People often say wisdom comes with age, but
the truth is that wisdom comes through
experience and thoughtfulness over many
years. Do you feel you have become wiser over
the years? Is it hard to watch younger people
make the same mistakes you once made?
Day 6
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for family.
Families come in all shapes and sizes, some
living close together, and some spread around
the country or beyond. Some are made up of
relatives by blood or adoption, but many
families include people who have become dear
to us over time, and who become family to us.
Are there family members that you are
especially thankful for?
Day 7
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for neighbors
and friends. Connecting with other people can
make our lives more rich and meaningful,
whether we see them every day or keep in
touch through letters and phone calls.
Neighbors and friends can dispel loneliness
and remind us that we matter to others. Are
there people who make your life better just by
being there? How can we show others that they
matter to us?
Day 8
Today’s gratitude: I am grateful for kindness.
We may not read about people being kind in the
news headlines, but kindness is all around us.
Simple acts like a smile, a compliment, or a
helping hand make the world a better, kinder
place for all of us. What opportunities do you
have for kindness? Is there someone in your
community who is especially kind?

Grandparents are a Hoot
The Age Thing:
Let’s start with the perks of being the age of a
grandparent:
Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
In a hostage situation, you are likely to be released first.
No one expects you to run into a burning building.
People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
Things you buy now won’t wear out.
You can eat dinner at 4 p.m.
You have a party and the neighbors don’t even realize it.
You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.
You sing along with elevator music.
Your eyes won’t get much worse.
Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
Your joints are a more accurate meteorologist than anyone at the National Weather Service
Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them anyway.
“Anyone who stops
learning is old,
whether at 20 or 80.
Anyone who keeps
learning stays young.
The greatest thing in
life is to keep your
mind young.”
~ Henry Ford
“If wrinkles must be
written upon our
brows, let them not
be written upon the
heart. The spirit
should not grow old.”
~ James A. Garfield

September Horoscopes and Birthdays In astrology, Virgo’s Virgins are those
born between September 1–22. Virgos
are one of the most careful signs of
the zodiac. They pay attention to detail,
analyze problems, and plan so as to
leave nothing to chance. Those born
from September 23–30 balance the
scales of Libra. Libras strive for
balance, avoid conflict, and desire
fairness for everyone. To achieve this,
they are sociable, strategic, charming,
and diplomatic both at work and home.
