Comprehension at a SATS level.
Remember the different questions types you might encounter:
· Retrieval - find the exact answer in the text
· Inference - use clues from the text to make a sensible conclusion and include these clues in your answer
It is surprising because the text says...which shows...
· Predict - use clues from the text to think about what might happen next
· Order or summarise - use exact facts from the text to order events

What to do:
1. Read the text first
2. Read each question carefully and think about the key words in the question
3. Look at how many marks the question carries. This will tell you how many points you need to make and whether you need to include evidence from the text.
· 1 mark = a word, phrase or single, quick sentence
· happy
· Relieved but still worried
· Nobody knows where the myth started
· 2 marks = 2 examples from the text OR an answer with exact evidence from the text
· Relieved, worried
· She is excited because she claps her hands and jumps on the spot
· He is nervous because his hands are sweating.
· 3 marks = 2 points with evidence for both
· The whale is mysterious because it appears from nowhere and makes a sound that isn’t easily described - the text says “mmwahhhh” to describe the sound.
· The whale is made to seem mysterious by being described as a ‘strange, black shape’ and by the way it suddenly appears from nowhere.
