I had recently started playing piano again these past couple months and I’m grateful that I have started again. I longed for any opportunities or outlets that would allow me to manifest my emotions in an ardent way. Piano and music in general has allowed me to express the emotions I’ve always kept inside my body and soul. Music is such a powerful catalyst for change. Just like religion and science, music is it’s own culture and it is another way of thought. We must acknowledge this art and respect music in all forms because that is what makes us musicians. However, I urge my peers to play for the right reasons. Don’t play for just money or to amaze an audience. It must come from your heart. Play to express not to impress.

Dear Mr. Becker,

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to you.

10 years ago, my parents told me I was going to take piano lessons and I was unbelievably nervous. When I walked into your music studio and met you, a lot of my fears went away. You had so much charisma and passion towards piano!

It was tough in the beginning, and around the time high school started, it was hard to stay dedicated towards practicing; however, it was your encouragement and devotion toward my piano education that kept me working hard. Thank you so much for that.

I like to think I’ve become pretty talented, and I’ve developed a love for piano and music. So thank you for your hugely important role in that.

It wasn’t just the music that helped me as I grew up, the recitals helped me overcome my fears of being in front of people. I can’t even imagine how quiet I would be right now if I hadn’t participated in so many of your recitals. CM had always stress me out, but it also helped me learn how to keep calm in high stress situations and I also learned piano theory/test taking strategies in the process.

Overall, I am so thankful that I have been able to learn from you these past 10 years. You have truly shaped the person I am today. I can’t stress that enough. I’m so glad you are teaching my siblings as well, for they are lucky to have such a devoted and passionate teacher.

Piano music is now a part of my life; maybe I’ll take some classes in college!

WHY MUSIC THEORY?

Theory is to music what grammar is to language. If you are visiting a foreign country for a few days, or only occasionally, you can get by with a phrase book.

But if you want to live there, if you want to be completely conversant in the language, you need to study its

grammar.

Just so with music.

If you want to play recreationally, just once in a while, little understanding of theory is required.

But if you want to ‘live’ there, if you want to be proficient, you need to understand the why behind things.

You need to study the ‘grammar’ of music, music theory.
