Q&A Session with Roger Elliott

Q: How long have you been coming to EngAge Wellness?

A: I’ve been coming here since January 2015.

Q: What activities do you participate in?

A: I’m currently doing the Diabetes Prevention Program, and I use the cardio machines

(especially the treadmill), and strength training machines.

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of EngAge Wellness?

A: Family atmosphere, the people who work here — Jeannie, Heather, Sara, & Ryan! They are

kind, compassionate, very positive, and knowledgeable! They are people persons!!! Love the

people who come to work out — they do not allow their age or infirmities to keep them from

participating. They inspire me!

Q: How has your motivation to exercise changed, since you started coming here?

A: Developing good habits through the encouragement of my EngAge Wellness family - both

staff & fellow participants. My exercise teammate (my wife Judy) coming with me regularly also

helps a lot. I am exercising better, losing weight, and I have more energy!

Q: What advice would you give other EngAge participants, to help them achieve their

fitness goals?

A: Educate yourself, share your gifts & talents with others, and get an exercise buddy to

motivate one another. I get a lot of my motivation watching others like Leonard, coming to

EngAge Wellness on a regular basis.

Background

I moved to Omaha form Boston in 1992, and became a Catholic Christian in 1981 at the age of

Tips for staying hydrated!

Keep a bottle of water with you during the day. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it.

If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime to your drink.

Be sure to drink water before, during, and after every workout.

When you’re feeling hungry, drink water. Thirst is often confused with hunger.

If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule. For example, when you wake up; at breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and when you go to bed. Or drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour.

Drink water when you go to a restaurant. It will keep you hydrated, and it’s free!

“Exercise Tip of the Month”

Brought to you by your Wellness Specialists, Heather and Sara IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION!IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION!

Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to

work properly. For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste, and

lubricate joints. Water is simply needed for good health! It makes up more than half of your body

weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe.

You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, and when you are physically active. If you

don’t replace the water you lose, you can become dehydrated.

Older adults are at higher risk for dehydration because as you get older, your brain may not be able

to sense dehydration and send the signals for thirst.

Always remember to drink water before, during, & after exercise!! To help you do this, we now offer

bottles of water, located by the coffee - or there are also bottles in the refrigerator.

PBS Educational Series

John Adrian, one of our EngAge participants & Advisory Board member, recommended the following series on your local PBS station. (The first segment was March 30

th, but the rest of

the series airs on April 1st & April 2

nd).

The following is what John wanted to share with everyone…

"One of our members recommended a book to me titled: “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer,” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, a 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner. While I was researching the book (long waiting list at OPL) I learned the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is presenting 'a vivid account of cancer's grim past and promising future of cures.” Each of us have been impacted by cancer and it is important to understand as much about it as we can.

I would encourage each of you to watch a three part, six hour PBS presentation: Ken Burns presents “The Emperor of All Maladies”, a film by Barak Goodman, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by “Siddhartha Mukherjee.”

He would then be interested in your reaction to the series - so please feel free to email him at:

Another television special, about living with cancer…

rd, on NET1. This program will feature segments on "Rural Health and

Advancements in Cancer Treatment," "Pancreatic Cancer," and "Impact on Families." Dr. Cowan, M.D., Director of the Eppley Cancer Center, and Dr. Sarah Thayer, M.D., Director of the Buffett Cancer Center at UNMC, and other guests will offer insight on Living With Cancer in Nebraska.
