Maria Christina Alvarez, better known as Christine Mendoza, of Superior, joined our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. She was 69 years old. Christine was born in Patagonia, Arizona on July 23, 1949 to parents Raul and Catalina Sanchez. She had 9 siblings, sisters, Mercy, Cuca, Connie, Lucy and Helen and brothers, Frank, Alfred, Raymond, and Frank. Christine married Robert Alvarez. She gained 2 step children, Mike and Richard, and together she and Robert
had 3 boys, Henry, Robert and Albert. She also had 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Christine was a homemaker and food service worker. She was known for her big heart, watching westerns and love for the Arizona Diamondbacks. She was taken way too soon and will forever be remembered for her infectious smile and love for her grand kids. Christine is preceded in death by her parents Raul and Catalina Sanchez, sisters Mercy Ramos and Cuca
Maria Christina ‘Christine Mendoza’ AlvarezDenogean. She is survived by her sons, Henry (Katrina), Robert (Dolores), and Albert Mendoza; and stepsons, Mike and Richard Alvarez. She also leaves behind her siblings, Frank (Rosemary), Alfred (Susan), Raymond and Mike Sanchez, Connie Bogenschutz, Lucy Fritz and Helen Peru. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery.

The adage is true. One spark can start a wildfire – just like the Sawmill Fire in Southern Arizona. And every year, people continue to be the number one cause of wildfires in the state.With the abundance of winter moisture across Arizona, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management wants to remind people not to get complacent. Sunday, April 7, kicked off Southwest Wildfire Awareness Week with this year’s
theme, ‘Prevention today for protection tomorrow.’ The goal of the week is to promote actions that prevent human-caused wildfires and reduce the risk of wildfire to homes and our Arizona communities. And prevention is key when it comes to wildfire risk reduction. Homeowners can do simple tasks to keep wildfire threat low by creating defensible space around their property. Oracle
Firewise suggests that the defensible space be 30 feet around your home. The Town of Kearny, this week, announced that on April 19 it will begin warning and citing homeowners for having weeds, dry shrubs or dead trees on their property. Drivers can help by ensuring tow chains are secure, never tossing cigarette butts out the window, and making sure the vehicle – and tires are in good condition before getting on the road.
To promote the week, DFFM will be focused on increased social media marketing and public service announcements. The Arizona Department of Transportation will also put up messaging on their highway signs, including “Don’t Drag Chains, One Spark Can Start a Wildfire.” Recently, DFFM released a mobile phone

April 6 was a busy day in Downtown Superior with the inaugural Superior Arts Festival.
A self guided mural walk, silent auction, musicians, art rock hunt and a multitude of vendors and demonstrations made
the event a hit with the many folks who attended. Many new faces were in Town which is

The Superior baseball team reclaimed its position at the top of the 1A rankings thanks in part to a couple of superb pitching performances last week, including a combined no-hitter against Duncan last Tuesday. “Our pitchers have been throwing well, but what has been the key is our defense behind them,” Superior head coach Manuel Ortega told the Superior Sun. “We are making plays for our pitchers. When we do that it makes out pitchers relax and gives them confidence.” Senior Jesus Castellanos threw a two-hitter against visiting Valley Union on Friday, Mar. 29, in the Panthers’
3 – 0 victory. Superior scored all its runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for Castellanos, who fanned 14 and issued only one walk in the complete-game shutout. He helped himself at the plate too, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Joshua Marquez and junior Daniel McConnell were each 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece. Senior Kale Major and freshman Matthew Cruz combined to no-hit Duncan in the Panthers’ 13 – 0 road win on Apr. 2. The duo had 10 strikeouts and walked only two Wildkat batters.Superior slugged five extra-base hits against Duncan, including a solo homerun by McConnell – his first of the season. The fourth-ranked Superior softball team has won six of its last seven games, including five-straight following wins against Duncan and 10th-ranked Hayden last week. The only setback in the last seven was a 1 – 0 loss to top-ranked Ray. The Pantherettes third-straight win during the streak was a 20 – 1 mercy-rule win against Valley Union on Mar. 29. Superior pounded out 24 hits, including eight doubles – two each by Lindsay Ketron, Juliana Navarro and Marisa Estatico – in a game that 12 Pantherettes had hits. Marlee Estatico, Ketron, Navarro, and Marisa Estatico led the way with three hits apiece while Anisah Cardenas, McKenna Duarte, Korinna Romero, and Makayla Martinez finished with two hits each. Navarro had a game-high four RBIs. On the mound, Duarte and freshman Danika Bryant combined to allow one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.Up next: Apr. 16 vs. Ray at 4 p.m.

Arizona Youth Partnership and First Things First are sponsoring free Active Parenting: First Five Years classes for parents and other caregivers of children, aged birth through five years. In four sessions, held at Hayden High
School, 824 Thorne Ave. in Winkelman, attendees will learn the ages and stages of development of children from birth to age five, and, how to handle them. Effective discipline that young children can understand, ways to prepare preschoolers
for scholastic success, using mindfulness to keep your cool, and more tools will be taught from Dr. Michael Popkin’s Active Parenting workshops. Sessions will be on Fridays, starting at noon, beginning April 26 and running

PHOENIX – Spring weather and Arizona State Parks and Trails go hand-in-hand! This is the perfect time of year to lace up your boots, grab your water bottle, and hit the trails. Because there’s an extensive network of trails in the more than 30 parks around the state, we narrowed it down to our top three springtime hikes that are sure to please with views and adventure alike.1. Red Rock State Park: Head north for cooler weather, later blooming
wildflowers, and trails amid the red rocks. Eagle’s Nest Trail is 1.53 miles of easy-to-moderate hiking with jaw-dropping views of the Sedona area and the riparian areas of the park. 2. Oracle State Park: April is the perfect time to catch the later-blooming wildflowers at Oracle’s higher elevation. The Nature Loop Trail also provides great chances to see wildlife and birds, and is a 1.2-mile loop with amazing views of the Galiuro Mountains and San Pedro River Valley.
3. Buckskin Mountain State Park: Head south from the popular Lake Havasu State Park to this quieter spot along the Colorado River. The Buckskin Trail is a one-mile loop that connects to additional trails if you want to extend your hike. The trail crosses over Interstate 95 and provides an opportunity to check out vegetation and views near the river. No matter which trail you pick, always make sure to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and dress appropriately,

13 Flag Retirement Ceremony
In order to see all local American fl ags are retired with the proper level of respect and reverence, VFW #3584 in Superior will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, April 13, at Fairview Cemetery in Superior. The Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with the fi ring of a ceremonial cannon. There will be several local speakers representing our nation’s military veterans, the youth leadership, and our community leaders. This event will provide an education on our fl ag, it’s history, and the proper ways which to present and retire each fl ag. There will be a free luncheon at the VFW at 405 W Main St in Superior following the ceremony for all who attend. Also, all communities from the Copper Corridor are encouraged to bring their old tattered and worn fl ags to the VFW in Superior to see they are retired with the dignity they deserve. On Saturday, April 20, the Superior Fire Department and VFW #3584 will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at the US-60 Park in Superior at 2 p.m. The Hunt will be open to all children 12 and under.
