WhenthecityofHerzliya,hometo80,000residentsandtooneofIsrael’smostupscalecommunities,wantedtoprovideit’scitizenswithfreewire-lessInternetthroughoutalargeportionoftheChenAvenuepedestrianmall,theylookedtowardstheexpertiseofSergeAzoulaywithMagalcomCommunications to get the job done; Magalacom looked towards the leaderinwirelessnetworking,HauteSpotNetworks.

TheprojectinHerzliyawassetalongalargepedestriancorridorwhichwindsthroughtheheartofHerzliya,adense,urbancityonthecentralcoastofIsrael.Itisalivelypromenade,linedwithretailstores,fashionmalls,andcafes.Giventhelocationandsetting,theprojecthadmanyhurdlestoovercome.ManyoftheshopsalreadyhadWi-Finetworksinplace,andduetothebuildingsandlayoutofthepromenade,line-of-sightimplementation was greatly obstructed.

Goals

ThemaingoalsofHerzliya’swirelessprojectweretoprovideWi-Fi servicetoit’scitizensfreeofchargewiththeabilityforhundredsof devicestoeasilyandsecurelylogontothenetworkwithfast,reliableconnectivity.Theabilitytoroamfromaccesspointtoaccesspointwithoutlosing connection was a must.

Herzliyaalsowantedtoprovideabetteruserexperienceforit’sWi-Fi usersthroughtheimplementationofQualityofService(QoS).

Lastly,HerzliyawantedalluserstoaccesstheInternetbyfirstauthenti-catingthroughthecity’swebportal.ThisallowedHerzliyatohaveusersagree to reasonable use policies, terms, and conditions; advising them on properproceduresforsafeuseofanopenwirelessnetwork.

WhenMagalcomreceivedtheRFPfortheproject,theybegantolookforwirelesssolutionprovidersusingadetailedlistofneeds.Magalcomwaslookingforawirelesssolutionthatincludedhighbandwidth,stability,scalability,highperformancewithverylowdelay,fullroutingfunctionalityincludingQoS,firewalling,VLANS,andtagging,allonasimpletouseandinstallplatform,atanattractiveprice.

Challenges

Duetoaverylimitednumberofavailableunlicensedwirelessbands,Israel’s 2.4GHzWi-Fiisverycongested.TheHerzliyashoppingdistrictisurbanwithmany“canyons”andsourcesofinterference.Magalcomwasstretchedthinonoptions to provide Wi-Fi service within very tight constraints. Using the highly con-figurableandcustomizableinterfaceofHauteSpotproducts,Magalcomwasableto“threadtheneedle”asitwere,betweenthemyriadof2.4GHz,802.11b/g devicesbroadcastingoneveryavailablechannel.Tocreateonelarge“HotSpot”utilizing multiple access points with roaming capabilities, while also using a captiveWebportalforuserauthenticationwouldtypicallybedifficult.HauteSpotproductssolvedthisproblembyprovidingconfigurationscriptsforeachroutermaking the system easier to install and reducing the startup time.

Results

Asthecapabilitiesandfunctionalityofourmobiledevicesincrease,usersexpectVoiceoverIPandvideostreamingtobestandardwithfastandreliableconnectivity.HauteSpot’sproductsoffertheconfigurabilityandperformancetostayaheadofthedemand.Thatissomethingnoothercompanycanprovide.Magalcom was able to provide a robust and reliable wireless network to Herzliya withtheabilitytodynamicallyroutespecifictypesofnetworktraffic,whichwasexactlywhattheircitizenswereaskingfor.ThecityeventookadvantageofHauteSpot’sspecificfeaturesthattheydidn’tevenknowtheyneeded,suchasperuserbandwidthcontrol,timeofdayaccessandpackettagging,whichgaveHerzliya the ability to customize their wireless solution that much more.

Fortheinstallation,HauteSpot’sWRAPDXC-Mdualradiounitswereutilized, allowing Magalcom to weave the wireless routers through the pedestrian promenade to create a seamless Wi-Fi network. Magalcom was able to provide 100%Wi-Ficoveragetotheareastheywantedwhileuserscouldwalkfromoneendofthepromenadetotheother,withoutlosingconnectivity.HauteSpot’swireless routers were easily deployed in this highly urban environment given theNationalElectricalManufacturersAssociation(NEMA)ruggedratedoutdoorenclosuresprovidedversatileinstallationmethodsandprotectionfromextremeweather conditions and vandalism.
