Tournament of Roses float’s theme focuses on organ donation’s impact
Three families share special life-giving bond
His wife Mary said she was in shock and uncertain what to do when ap-proached about donating Paul’s organs. Then she remembered how Laurie’s selfless gift had inspired Paul. He had spoken with his father about his interest in becoming an organ donor and Mary
decided to give her consent for Paul’s organs to be donated.
When she returned home after her husband’s death, Mary explained to their nine and eleven year old daugh-ters about her decision to donate Paul’s organs. “Oh my God, Mommy,” her 11-year old daughter said, “he’d be so happy.”
“That was my answer,” Mary ex-plains, “I felt at peace.”
Laurie was able to visit Paul in the hospital before he died. “It was he who had been the hero all along,” she said.
Paul’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three middle-aged men. His saphenous veins were used in vas-cular graphs for two patients having coronary artery bypass surgery, and his corneas have restored sight for two individuals.
Paul’s heart was given to Gates Or-lando, a retired NHL player with the Buffalo Sabres as well as the Roches-ter Amerks. Gates was at Strong and had been there waiting for a heart for ten months. He had been kept alive during that time with a total artificial heart - the first person in upstate New York to receive one. Both the donor and recipient were in the same city, the same hospital, and were perfect matches.
Paul was a big sports fan, including the Sabres, and Mary says the family is proud the gift of life makes it pos-sible for Gates to live a full life and advocate for more people to join the organ donor registry.

Three local families will be part of the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day.
Laurie LoMonaco of Brockport, Mary Guyette and Gates Orlando will represent the many organ donors and recipients from upstate New York while riding on or walking with the Donate Life Rose Parade float.
A special send-off celebration hosted by the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network (FLDRN) and UR Medicine’s Solid Organ Transplant Programs was held Monday, December 8 at Strong Memorial Hospital for the three fami-lies who share a very special and re-markable bond.
In January 2013, Laurie LoMonaco became a living donor, giving one of her
kidneys altruistically through the UR Medicine Transplant Program.
She remembers it was difficult for her to share her decision with family and friends, but when she shared her intentions with best friends Mary and Paul Guyette, Paul was very impressed by her decision and deeply moved.
“It sparked an interest in him,” Mary tells the Suburban News/The Her-ald. “He thought she was a hero. He was in awe of her decision.”
“To Paul I was a hero,” Laurie said during the send-off celebration Decem-ber 8, but noted it was Paul who “... became a bigger hero for so many.”
Paul unexpectedly became that hero through a remarkable series of events. Only ten days after Laurie underwent surgery to donate her kidney, Paul was stricken with a fatal intracranial brain hemorrhage on February 3, 2013.
The Rose Bowl Parade float will feature butterflies emerging from storybooks to symbolize the enduring power of organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation. A florograph of Paul Guyette is included in the float design.
Laurie LoMonaco, living kidney donor, Gates Orlando, heart transplant recipient, and Mary Guyette, wife of deceased donor Paul Guyette, whose heart Gates received.

Hilton hands Irondequoit first lossby Warren Kozireski
John Rutherford pound-ed in his first goal of the season and fifth in his ca-reer on a rebound with just five seconds remaining in the second period to break a 3-3 tie and give Hilton a 5-3 victory over Irondequoit in high school hockey.
The Cadets opened up a 1-0 lead when Todd Hig-gins won an offensive zone faceoff back to the right point. Hunter Howell wristed it into the net to give Hilton a 1-0 lead at 4:37 of the first period.
Irondequoit’s Anthony Thurston scored twice within 43 seconds to stake the Eagles to a 2-1 lead, but Hilton tied the game on a power play goal as Hig-gins tipped a Howell shot past the goaltender at 9:10 of the first period.
Hard work late in the first got the Cadets the lead back as Brenden Howell dug the puck out from mul-
tiple legs behind the Irond-equoit net and squeezed a shot inside the post and the goalie’s leg pad. Jake Coon assisted at 9:54 of the first and Hilton had a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
The Eagles again tied the contest six minutes into the second period on a redirection, but Rutherford pounced on the rebound from a Spencer Norris shot from the right corner to put the Cadets ahead for good.
Justin Allen added an insurance goal with his team-leading third of the season at 11:53 of the third period as his wrist shot off a pass from Jake Palumbo sailed just inside the right post at 11:53.
“This was a typical Hil-ton-Irondequoit game,” Cadets head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “It was fast-paced and tough and we’re lucky to come out on top.”
The game marked the second time this season the Cadets have allowed a one or two goal lead to evapo-rate. “I’m happy we were able to respond and find another gear, but if we’re going to be successful mov-ing forward, we can’t con-tinue to do that.”
Goaltender Patrick Den-nehy made 22 saves on 25 shots in the win.
Hilton concludes the 2014 portion of the sched-ule with four away contests followed by five in a row on home ice (Lakeshore) to be-gin the New Year.

In a new series of articles, Westside News Inc. asks owners of small businesses in the readership about their experiences, how they have adapted their business plan
to meet the needs of the marketplace and economy and what they have learned in the process. In coming install-ments, we’ll interview other new and veteran business owners from around the Westside News Inc. delivery area. This week’s “In Business” features Bittersweet in Brockport.
Evelyn DowEditor, Westside News Inc.
At Bittersweet - Eclectic mix of merchandise draws shoppers to historic buildingby Kristina Gabalski
To say that there is a certain “vibe” when you walk into Bittersweet in downtown Brockport is an understate-ment.
The shop, owned and operated by Darlene Trento for 34 years and housed in a landmark building at the corner of Main and Market Streets, is filled from floor to ceiling with an incredible variety of treasures.
“It’s an amazing and eclectic mix of American-made and fair trade products,” Darlene says. “People really like our mix.”
There is jewelry - including Trollbeads, American made pottery, wind chimes, bird houses, handwoven blankets, paintings, lighting, glasswork, giftware and seasonal items.
One room is filled with natural fiber Flax and Earth Creations clothing, shoes by Naot, leather purses and ac-cessories.
Darlene says her priority is to offer American-made goods, and if they are imported, they must be fair trade.
“I try very hard to put people to work,” she says.
Q: How did the business get started?“I went to college here, I graduated here,” Darlene says of The College at Brockport. After graduation, she made baskets and jewelry and wanted to open a shop that would feature American crafts at their finest.
Bittersweet was originally located one corner down on Main Street, Darlene says, but has been at its current location for 24 years. The shop is housed in what Dar-lene calls, “... a beautiful building.” The “Decker’s Block” building was constructed as a bank in 1871 and is one of the most striking in the business district. It was suffering from neglect when Darlene moved in.
“It was a sleeping beauty,” Darlene says and it helped bring her business to life.
Q: What about the name?Darlene explains that bittersweet vine with its bright or-ange berries, is an everlasting, which she finds compel-ling.
“I love bittersweet,” she says. “I love to pick bittersweet, there are touches of bittersweet all over the store.”
Though not her original intention, she explains that others have pointed out that the name also has a univer-sal and profound symbolism: so many things in life are both bitter and sweet at the same time.
Q: How does she keep the business thriving?“By keeping it fresh,” Darlene explains. I’m always mov-ing things around ... I buy from lots of different vendors. I’m always finding new people to buy from.
“Customer service is a really big part of the business,” she continues. Bittersweet has knowledgeable and helpful staff members and offers boxes and wrapping for gifts.
Q: What do you enjoy most about running the shop?Darlene is obviously passionate about every facet of her business. “I like everything,” she says. “I like it all ... buy-ing, displaying ... I like what I do.”
Q: What about running a business in a college town?“I’m all about SUNY Brockport,” Darlene says. “I’m a fan of SUNY Brockport - we wouldn’t be here without it. It employs so many people.”
Darlene says professors, staff, parents and students all patronize the store. Both she and her husband are proud to be graduates of the college, she says, and adds that the village is fortunate to have the school.
“It keeps (the village) vivacious, it keeps us young, not stagnant,” she says.
Q: Do you have any advice for people thinking about start-ing their own business?Darlene pauses over this question and says she wouldn’t give advice in this area, but she does say, “ ... follow your dreams ... follow your heart ... follow your passions.”
Q: How has your business grown?Darlene expanded her business efforts several years ago, opening Bittersweet’s sister store, Fast Buck Fanny’s, just across Market Street. She opened the location to appeal to college students and younger customers. Fast Buck Fanny’s is now seven years old and has a different focus. Merchandise is less expensive, Darlene explains, and fea-tures trendy clothing, hip jewelry and unique gifts.
“It has a retro feel to it,” she notes. “It’s an antique-retro kind of place.
“Being in business for 34 years says a lot,” Darlene con-tinues, and adds Bittersweet draws customers from Syra-cuse to Buffalo.

Gates did not meet the Guyette family for many months after the transplant.Mary felt ready to make the connection a year ago in December during the Fro-zen Frontier event in which Gates made an appearance. The two met behind the scenes. “We went from tears to laughter,” Mary says.
“It’s not about me,” Gates told the Suburban News/The Herald about his role as recipient, and notes the emotional recovery was tougher than the physical recovery from his surgery. “Recipients understand,” he said, regarding the bitter-sweet nature of the or-gan donation process. He also described survivor’s guilt and feelings of sadness for the life that was lost as well as others who remain in need of transplants. “A lot of patients didn’t make it - Why did I have the chance?” Gates
observes. He visits those waiting for heart trans-
plants at Strong weekly.Laurie LoMonaco has accompanied him
and says the visits are uplifting for pa-tients. “He is honest - he tells them, ‘this is what you need to do,’ he gives them hope,” she says.
Gates will ride on the Rose Parade float on New Year’s Day next to a floragraph of Paul. Laurie will walk along side Gates’ spot on the float.
“We share a very deep bond that will never be broken by time or distance,” Laurie said De-cember 8 about herself, Mary, Paul and Gates. “Do-nors give hope to so many who need it.”

enduring power of organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation.
“Each New Year, Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network is honored to play a small part in the Rose Parade and the opportunity to spread the message about donation to such a large audience,” said FLDRN Executive Director Rob Kochik.
He described this year’s float which “features 60 beautiful butterflies emerg-ing from an open book, representing the number of lives transformed by a single deceased donor,” Kochik said. “The but-terflies ascend above 72 volumes adorned with floragraph portraits of deceased donors whose legacies are nurtured by their loved ones. Walking alongside the float will be 12 living organ donors whose stories have become intertwined with those of their recipients. Seated among thousands of dedicated roses are 30 riders representing transplant recipients who
celebrate the new chapters of their lives made possible only by the generosity of donors.”
Mary Guyette and her daughters, Jenna and Emma, completed the flora-graph of Paul during the send-off event December 8.

celebrate the season affordably(StatePoint) The holidays can be an expen-sive time for decorating, entertaining and shopping. Luckily, there are easy ways to save this holiday season, so you can spend more time celebrating and less time stress-ing over expenses.
Typically, one of the largest expenses during the holiday season is gifts for friends and family. Instead of spending a fortune on store-bought presents, consider creating a DIY gift.
For example, you can place dry ingredi-ents inside a canning jar with an easy-to-follow recipe for sugar cookies or holiday pancakes for a creative, inexpensive gift.
Gift cards dressed up with a festive greeting card also makes a great pres-ent. Another option is to look for an auto-renewal program that allows you to give a practical gift like diapers, pet food and more to a recipient on a weekly or monthly basis.
One of the best parts about the holidays
is baking delicious treats for the whole family to enjoy. Bake up something tasty like date nut bread using simple ingredi-ents.
The holidays are often about spending time with family and friends, which means you could be doing a lot more entertaining than usual at your home. Get your home holiday-ready by making a plan for house-cleaning.
Straighten up before cleaning, so the process is expedited. To save on cleaning supplies, consider buying store brands, rather than name brand products. Be sure to also add the smells of the season with scented candles and electric warmers.
Adorning your home with holiday deco-rations can really get your family in the spirit. Deals on dollar ornaments, festive garland, decorative trees and fun wreaths can help you to make your home festive without breaking the bank.

IMPORTANT GESTURES
www.burgerfuneralhome.com
One idea that often comes to mind upon hearing of a person’s passing is to send flowers to the family of the deceased; however, there are other ways to convey compassion and respect, including making a charitable contribution in the name of the deceased. This may be done to help an organization that occupied a place in his or her heart. Otherwise, a lasting memorial may take the form of a plaque or nameplate that occupies a well-known location in the community, or a tree may be planted in the deceased’s name, which will grow and offer shade and pleasure to all who appreciate it. It may also be possible
to hold a memorial service with the family’s blessing.A memorial service is one in which the body is not
present and can vary in ceremony and procedures according to the community and religious affiliations. Some families prefer public visitations followed by a private or graveside service with a memorial service later at the church or funeral home. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

A Special
The Spencerport Community truly lived up to its slo-gan “Spencerport Someplace Special” during the week of November 2 when my three brothers, Jim, Mike, Tom, and I suffered the loss of our mother, Joyce.
We were overwhelmed with love, support, respect and unity while honoring Joyce and supporting us.
Joyce wore many hats - she was first and foremost a Mom, Grandmother/Nana, Spencerport Mayor, Friend, Realtor, Sister, Aunt, Wife and a member of many com-munity organizations within the village and school sys-tem. She wore each hat with great dignity and pride but for us the best hat ever was that of a “Mother.”
Thank you to everyone for your outpouring of support and caring for our family during this very difficult time in our lives.
We will continue to keep Joyce alive and in our hearts as she is everywhere in the village, from Our Hometown Hero banners to the smallest plant she had planted.
Sincerely,The Lobene Family
