LA Intergroup Chairperson’s Message How can I help? This simple question
goes to the heart of our three Al-Anon Leg-
acies: Recovery, Unity, and Service. Joining
Al-Anon did much more for me than simply
help me recover from the impact of an-
other’s alcoholism. It gave me the oppor-
tunity to help others in a wide variety of
ways and even changed the way I see the
world. It wasn’t necessary to ask “How can
I help?” When I show up for a meeting it
helps the group survive. When I participate,
my share may help another member’s re-
covery. Some groups had an open service
position that I was able to fill. I quickly
learned that being of service really helped
my recovery and it helps the group’s unity.
Thanks to this lesson, being of service in the
wider world beyond Al-Anon also opened
up to me.
Early in my professional career I was
made the supervisor of a small group of
engineers. It seemed that my role was to
ensure that my team did their best for the
company, and that I would need to tell them
what to do and how to do it. I was in CON-
TROL - a micromanager of the first order.
My team did not respond well to what I
thought was amazing management skill.
With time, experience, and guidance of oth-
ers I learned to back off from my control-
ling behavior. Al-Anon helped me to see
that my purpose was much more than just
directing the workers. I had the opportunity,
and the responsibility, to help them grow as
productive team members. In my manage-
ment role, I was of service to two entities:
the company that employed me and the em-
ployees who were entrusted to my care.
This thought never occurred to me before
Al-Anon.
It is my belief that the primary purpose of
our Al-Anon Information Service (AIS)
office is to do everything it can to support
Al-Anon groups in our service area and,
through them, the members of Al-Anon.
The office is not here just to sell Conference
Approved Literature (CAL). They can even
give you a list of Al-Anon speakers names
(plus phone numbers, city, and availability)
who can be invited to speak at your meet-
ing. Did you know that?
Yours in Service,
Bob B.

Thank you to the members who submit questions to the Ask It Basket. It is such a fun part of our Al-Anoncer, and furthermore, of our recovery. We feel it is important to inform members to ask questions that follow our Legacies: The Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, Twelve Concepts and our General Warranties. If a question seems to be outside the Legacies we may not respond.
An Al-Anon member writes:
How often does Al-Anon have an outside audit done? I noticed the audit done was done by 2 members of Al-Anon instead of someone independent of Al-Anon.
Dear Al-Anon member:
SCWS financial records conform to the General Accepted Ac-counting Principles and conducts yearly reviews of its financials by two experienced and knowledgeable members. (SCWS By-laws, Article XI, Section 3, Item C. The Audit Committee to con-sist of two Area members who are not currently on the SCWS Board). The process consists of: checking for internal controls, sample testing of transactions and cash to cash reconciliation. The organization's yearly gross revenue is less than $2M, therefore it is typically not subject to an independent audit by a CPA, per Cali-fornia statutes.

Ask It Basket October 2018
An Al-Anon member writes:
How to address members who change God from “he” to “she,” or another word, when reading the Steps?
Dear Al-Anon member:
Our 2018-2021 Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual states the fol-lowing: “No changes are to be made in the Al-Anon or Alateen Traditions, the Steps, the Concepts of Service (except the descrip-tive text), or the General Warranties of the Conference Charter (Item 12) without written consent of three-quarters of the Al-Anon Family Groups” (pg. 226). In addition, in 1962 and 1965, the World Service Conference voted unanimously to recommend to groups the exclusive use of Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. This encourages Al-Anon unity and assures that the Al-Anon message at our meetings is clear and consistent.
Our First Tradition explains “Our common welfare should come first; personal progress for the greatest number depends upon uni-ty.” Therefore, to avoid confusion and to promote unity in the world-wide fellowship of Al-Anon and Alateen, all members and groups are asked to respect and honor the Legacies as written. If a member changes the wording of the Steps when reading them aloud, the group’s Secretary might read that paragraph in the Ser-vice Manual after the member is finished reading. This will both educates the group’s members about Al-Anon/Alateen policies and it does not single out a member individually.

AL-ANON SERVICE BOARD RESUME
FOR LARRY H.:
Hello to my Al-Anon family. I have been a grateful member
of Al-Anon for 9 1/2 years. During this time, I have grown
in so many ways and I am now at peace with myself and
with the people I love. During the past 9 1/2 years, I have
been of service at group level and above group level. I have
served as secretary, refreshments/hospitality, phone list,
newcomer greeter, treasurer, literature, program chair, and
timer. I have served as World Service (GR) and Intergroup
representatives and have given service on several commit-
tees. Those include the Foothill Roundup, Al-Anon Family
Group Convention, and the San Fernando Valley AA Con-
vention. I also volunteered at the Information Service Of-
fice. I was voted in to serve on the Intergroup Service
Board from 2016 thru 2017. During this service commit-
ment I helped produce the Al-Anon newsletter, the Al-
Anoncer. When my time on the service board ended at the
end of 2017, I continued to volunteer designing the Al-
Anoncer. I am now eligible to serve on the board again and
would like to continue designing the Al-Anoncer newsletter
for another two years. I feel this is how I can give back to
Al-Anon and my Al-Anon family and show the gratitude I
have for this program. It would be an honor to again serve
on the intergroup service board.
Love in service,
Larry H
AL-ANON SERVICE BOARD RESUME
FOR TIFFIANY T.:
I have been in Al-anon for 2 years and am currently on the
2018 IGR service board as your nominations chair, by vol-
unteering in March 2018. I have worked on the SFVAAC
2017 as security, SFVAAC 2018 as Publicity Chair,
VCAAC 2017 Gratitude Chair. I have served as secretary,
literature, refreshments, greeter, speaker picker, intergroup
rep and group rep at various meetings I attend around the
San Fernando Valley and Westlake Village Areas. I have
owned my own business for over 10 years and hope to bring
some of my leadership and knowledge to the 2019 service
board. Al-anon has given me my life back and I’d love to
give back by being of service to you all.
Thank you!
Tiffiany T.
AL-ANON SERVICE BOARD RESUME
FOR PYRE:
My name is Pyre and it is an honor to be nominated to serve
as Chair on the Service Board for Al-Anon Information Ser-
vices of Greater Los Angeles. I have been a grateful mem-
ber of Al-Anon for four and a half years. I have always rec-
ognized the need and importance of stepping up to be of
service within my program. Over the years, I have filled
many service commitments (Secretary, Treasurer, Time-
Keeper, Program Chair etc) for different Al-Anon meetings
including Inter-Group Rep on two separate occasions (a
total of a year and a half). Most recently I have served as
Vice Chair on the LA Service Board for the past year. In
addition to my service in Al-Anon, I have five years of ex-
perience serving on Board Committees for outside organi-
zations. I look forward to the opportunity to continue apply-
ing my experience and provide any guidance I can to the
Service Board in 2019. I appreciate your consideration of
my ability to serve and vow to serve with faith and commit-
ment.
Sincerely through Fellowship,
Pyre
AL-ANON SERVICE BOARD RESUME
FOR CASEY R.:
It is my honor to be nominated for the 2019 Service Board.
I have been a member of Al-Anon since January of 2016,
and in my almost 3 years, I have served as the Literature
Rep, Speaker Seeker, Secretary, Group Rep, Intergroup
Rep, and Volunteer Service Board Member serving as Insti-
tutions chair. On the Intergroup in 2017-2018, I used my
professional experience to help the organization make im-
portant decisions regarding the bylaws changes. In my short
time as Institutions Chair, I have focused on finding ways to
maintain literature supplies for the institutions we support
despite the decrease in funding. As an elected member of
the Service Board, I will bring the same enthusiasm for the
next two years.
Thank you,
Casey R.

The Serenity Prayer Al-Anon suggests the words of the Serenity prayer can help us gain perspective, sort out what we can and can not do, and know when to act and when to let go.
God grant me the Serenity To accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
Slogans Al-Anon uses slogans to assist members to recover during difficult times:
Acceptance has to occur before change can occur An Expectation Is A Resentment Waiting To
Happen Anger Is Just One Letter Short Of Danger Are you seeing the disease or the person Ask yourself—Would you rather be right or
happy? Be Honest But for the Grace of God, there go I Detachment, Not Amputation Doing service is like getting on the super highway to
recovery Easy Does It Fake It Till You Make It! Feelings Aren’t Facts Feel Good About Saying “No” First Things First Forgive or relive Forgiveness is giving up hope for a better past Foster an Attitude of Gratitude How Important Is It? If In Doubt, Don’t Is It Worth My Serenity? It’s impossible to be resentful and grateful at the same
