We know that textbook affordability can be a substantial barrierto student success so you may want to consider thesealternatives when considering textbooks
1 Putting a copy of your textbook on reserve in the library If youhave an extra copy or the publisher is willing to give you one
you can contact Becky Rockwell or Andy Kulp at the Smith Library to putthe book on reserve
2 Open Education Resources (OERs) have been improving in quality overthe past few years There is now a wide range of high quality texts inmany disciplines such as
OER Commons httpswwwoercommonsorgOpenStax httpsopenstaxorghigher-edOpen Textbook Library httpopenumneduopentextbooks
While it may not be a viable solution for every course it will be muchappreciated by students in courses where it does make sense
Infusing Writing into the Curriculum Road Map for Departments
Laurel Rodgers recently shared the work Biology is doing to infusewriting throughout their curriculum with members of our Writing in
the Disciplines Learning Community There were many great ideas discussedbut here is a summary of the main points
1 Create a curriculum map that includes writing objectives2 Decide on a common writing reference text3 Partner with the Writing Center4 Hold faculty development workshop sessions on writing as well as student
workshops in classes (eg citation methods)5 Decide on common rubric6 Develop an assessment plan
