• LTF-related decisions made in previous meetings [1]

– The HE PPDU shall support the following LTF modes:• HE-LTF symbol duration of 6.4us excluding GI

– Equivalent to modulating every other tone in an OFDM symbol of 12.8 µs excluding GI, and then removing the second half of the OFDM symbol in time domain

• HE-LTF symbol duration of 12.8 µs excluding GI

Pilots in LTF OFDM Symbols

• Need for phase tracking in beamformed LTF (i.e. VHT-LTF) OFDM symbols was shown in [2].

• Frequency drift compensation is also important in HE-LTF OFDM symbols.– 11ax will support even longer LTF OFDM symbol durations. This may result in further

drift compared that with 11ac.– XTAL and LO design used in 11ac is likely to re-used for 11ax.

Pilots in 2xLTF

• 2xLTF limits the positions of pilots in certain data subcarriers.– 2xLTF and 4xLTF terminology barrowed from [3]. It refers to 6.4us and 12.8us DFT duration of LTF

symbols.

• Potentially, pilots positions designed and optimized for 4xLTF or just regular data subcarriers may result in some pilots missing in the 2xLTF OFDM symbol.

• Having two different pilot designs for 2xLTF and 4xLTF case should be avoided as it adds implementation complexity.

Pilots in different OFDMA RUs

• Most likely number of DC tones for 11ax is odd numbered, 1, 3, 5, or 7.• Some of the OFDMA resource units (RU) is likely to be mirror symmetric and

have even number of subcarriers,• This combination results in following characteristics:

– some RUs of the same size are with position starting with odd numbered subcarrier– some RUs of the same size are with position starting with even numbered subcarrier.– different relative mapping of 2xLTF signals between RUs of the same size– Different relative mapping of pilot tones between RUs of the same size

• Assuming that pilot tones are only mapped to tones with 2xLTF signals.

Conclusions

• Pilot placement in LTF OFDM symbols and Data OFDM symbols in OFDMA requires some thought– May have impact on the overall design and numerology itself.

• To avoid loss in performance, pilot positions should be aligned with tones selected for 2xLTF transmission.

• To avoid implementation complexity, pilot positions between the 4xLTF case and 2xLTF case should be identical.

Straw Poll #1

• Do you agree to the following concept– Number of pilot tones in a LTF symbol, regardless of LTF symbol

durations excluding GI, shall be identical to number of pilot tones in a data OFDM symbol for DL HE PPDU?
