    A testimonial from English punker John Robb, formerly of TheMembranes, this work is a historical tour of the early punk scene bythe musicians and scenesters who made it happen. As with most oralhistories, the stories are interesting, but can be a bit rambling, but onecannot dispute its authenticity. These tales may warn a few away fromthe scene!

    It takes a major fan to undertake the writing of an encyclopedia for anentire genre, but Cogan tackles the whole gambit in this social history,highlighting the scenes causes such as equality, environmentalism,

    and animal welfare, but also highlighting some of the negativesassociated with the movement, including violence, Neo-Nazism, anddrug abuse within the scene. A complete and compelling work foranyone interested in the genre.

    that Changed the 20th Century, Hardeep Phull (2008)

    While this is not a volume dedicated solely to the punk rock genre, itis included to demonstrate the power of the genre, and to reiterate thepower of the music. While I may not agree with the authors

    particular choice of punk protest song inclusions (Green Day?!?), I doappreciate the fact that the genre is represented, as punk does a fightsong like nothing else.

    A film devoted to the Chicago punk scenes early years, this too-cooldocumentary follows the scenes early years in the Windy City, anddisplays the relationship between the citys punks and gay community,

    as gay bars were often the only places the bands could get stage time.The film documents the bands and people responsible for the scene,and establishes Chicago as an important world punk destination.

    The Sex Pistols were a band for only 26 months, but became arguablythe most visible punk band ever. Compiling classic footage andinterviews, Director Julian Temple chronicles their rise from gutterpunk to magazine cover boys even though their bassist couldnt play

    to save his life, and had a nagging love for heroin.

    Steven Lee Beeber (2006)

    A book that documents the Godfathers of Punk, a collection ofAmerican musicians who were influential in the New York musicscene, who all happened to be Jewish, and all seemed to congregate at

    one venue, NYCs historic CBGB theater. While the book centers onthe lack of visibility of Jews in American popular music, it is a greatexpose about artists such as Lou Reed, the Ramones, a filthy rockclub, and the music they all made together.

    Fugazi is a hardcore band at heart, fronted by Ian McKaye, formerly ofMinor Threat, and a devoted straight-edger. Fugazi exemplifies thematured punk sound, featuring no-nonsense, straight-up, intelligent,rock and roll. Listening to this band makes you want to start eating

    brown rice and vegetables while seriously considering what the topicof your manifesto will be.

    Southern Californias Social Distortion has a rockabilly soul, and thisrelease is the bands best example of their sound. While this bandmay not try to rip your face off like other traditionally punk bands,it is tattooed cowpunk at its finest, preferably played within the

    confines of any American automobile manufactured before 1970.

    danceable anthems, political fury, and teenage angst.
