5th September 2019 Dear Parents, YEAR 3 HILTINGBURY WALK As part of our geography topic, ‘Our Place’, and ‘Local Leaflets’ in English, we will be taking the children on a walk around Hiltingbury on Thursday 3rd October 2019. We will be leaving school at 10.15am and will return at approximately midday. The children will need to wear school uniform, a warm, waterproof coat (as we will go irrespective of the weather) and sensible walking shoes (alternative footwear to their school shoes please – wellingtons or walking boots are ideal). We would appreciate some parental help: if you are able to assist on this walk, please indicate on the reply slip below and return it to the Class Teacher by Monday 23rd September 2019. If you are needed to help, your class teacher will contact you by Friday 27th September 2019. Yours sincerely

5th September 2019 Dear Parents, Year 3 – Stonehenge – 3CR – Thursday 7th November 2019 We are very pleased to be taking Year 3 to visit Stonehenge in Wiltshire to enhance our autumn history topic. This is a fantastic opportunity to increase the children’s knowledge and understanding of Neolithic life. Details of the trip are as follows:

Thursday 7th November 2019

Arrive at school by 07.45am

Leave school by coach at: 08.00am

Leave Stonehenge at: 3.00pm Arrive at school by 4.00-4.30pm approx. (check the school website for updates)

Leader: Mrs Richardson The children should wear old outdoor clothing, with a warm waterproof coat, gloves and a hat (plenty of layers that can

be removed). Assume that the weather will be at least 10° colder at Stonehenge. Because the stones are in such an exposed area, it is always considerably colder than in Chandler’s Ford. Walking boots or wellies need to be worn and a change of shoes needs to be provided in a bag for the coach journey home.

A substantial packed lunch, with healthy snacks and drinks preferably of the non-fizzy type, in an unbreakable container is required. We will have a snack on arrival at Stonehenge, so extra food is needed. Please ensure there are no nut products in your child’s packed lunch, as we do have children with nut allergies in the year group.

Activities: Visiting the Stones & Discovery Workshop.

In event of emergency contact should be made directly to the school office.

One of the activities involves grinding wheat, so please can you indicate on the attached reply slip if your child is asthmatic or has an allergy to wheat. Please pay online OR please complete the attached slip and return it to the school office, along with your payment of £21.50 no later than Monday 14th October 2019. We would appreciate some parental help; if you are able to assist on this trip and have already had a DBS check, please indicate on the reply slip attached. If you are needed to help, your class teacher will contact you by Monday 21st October 2019. Due to the length of the journey we will need to leave promptly. Please ensure that your child is dropped off at their classroom by 7.45am for registration. In the event that you are running late, the coach will not be able to wait longer than five minutes. As we will be returning to school after the end of the school day, please indicate on the attached slip your child’s home arrangements. If you are collecting your child, please pick him/her up from their classroom. Yours sincerely

Dear Parents/Carers, Year 3 – St Boniface Church Workshop – Tuesday 10th December 2019

On Tuesday 10th December 2019, Year 3 will be visiting St Boniface church on Hursley Road, Chandler’s Ford. This trip is to support our Christmas religious education unit on ‘Rituals’ and will enable the children to explore what this means in a Christian context. As always with RE, the aim is to enable children to find out more about others’ beliefs to develop understanding, while respecting that the children themselves may hold a different set of beliefs. During the day, there will be 3 workshops as detailed beneath: 3CR: 9.45am. We will leave school at 9.15am, returning to school by 11.15am 3DN: 10.45am. We will leave school at 10.15am, returning to school by 12.15pm 3P: 1.45pm. We will leave school at 1.15pm, returning to school by 3.15pm We will be walking to and from the church and will therefore need adult help with this. 5th September 2019 Dear parents and carers, At various times throughout the year we watch films in school, most often to enhance the curriculum, but also during wet lunch times or as a treat at the end of term. The films we currently watch are suitable for all ages (U). There are occasions when, as part of our curriculum, we may wish to show the children a PG film, ‘Stig of the Dump’ for example. In order to do so, we would like your permission to allow your child to watch PG films. Teachers will check to ensure that these films are appropriate for children aged 7-8 years old to watch. Could you please complete the slip below to advise us that you do not give permission for your Year 3 child to watch PG films in school. If we do not receive a slip back by Monday 16th September 2019, we will assume that you have given consent for your child to watch suitable PG films in school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. Yours sincerely, The Year 3 teachers ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… To the Junior School Office Child’s name:………………………………….… Class:……………………………………….. I DO NOT give permission for my child to watch any PG rated films in school. Signature: ………………………..……………………… Date: ………………

Dear Year 3 Parents and carers

Every year, we welcome parents in to school to support the children’s learning. This can be in several ways: some parents join us on school trips; others support learning in the classroom; others offer photocopying and admin support and some parents listen to children read or help the children to play maths games. If you are able to offer some help during the academic year, please could you indicate what support you would like to offer and the days that you would be available. We would ask that you return this slip to the school office, by return, so we can hit the ground running with photocopying and parent readers as early as possible this term. If your child’s class teacher requires support in class, they will contact you directly. If you are not contacted, it is only because extra support is not needed at this time! If your help is required, you will need to have a DBS check done – your full name and email address will need to be provided to Mrs Penney, in the school office, in order that this check may be instigated. There are strict rules regarding when we may apply for an enhanced DBS check – briefly you have to be in a ‘regulated activity’ and for the purpose of volunteering this is defined as Frequently (once a week or more) or Intensively 4 or more days in a 30 day period. Kind regards C Pollock

5th September 2019 Homework in Year 3 Dear Parents and carers, I would like to take this opportunity to share the current practice as regards spellings and homework in Year 3. Orange Homework Books: Every child will be given an orange homework book, inside a plastic wallet, that is used to communicate the homework required each week. We ask that this orange book comes back into school every day, as we often use this during our spelling lessons. We will also send your child home with a termly homework booklet, providing a quick reference guide for you and your child. Contained in this booklet is information about our Year 3 Link reading, the term’s spellings, word of the week and optional homework tasks, etc. Spellings: Having initially trialled a new approach to spellings, we are confident that our adopted approach is the way forward with regards to the teaching of spellings in our school. Considerable research has been undertaken that proves that issuing weekly spelling lists for children to learn does not help them to understand rules and retain spelling knowledge. For many children, the words are learnt for a test and promptly forgotten. By teaching spelling rules, we will be helping children to use their knowledge of the rules to spell both known and new words. Every week, we share a spelling rule with the children and ask them to find up to ten words that fit that rule. It is important that they know the meaning of their spelling words, so that they are able to use these in the correct contexts. In Year 3, we set spellings on a Friday, as this gives the children time over the weekend to find words that fit the rule. On a Monday, we share the spellings that have been found, in class, and help any children who have had difficulties over the weekend. Over the following three days, we investigate the spelling rules in class and then test the children on words that fit the rule on a Thursday. This test is usually by means of a short dictation, as this provides the children with handwriting and punctuation practice too. Your child is awarded a mark if they spell the rule correctly and a bonus mark if they spell the rest of the word correctly. The children can access their spellings from Google Classroom if they are absent from school when they are handed out. It is our expectation that the children practise learning the spellings that they have found on a daily basis, recording these on the sheet that is stuck in their orange homework book. Maths: During the Autumn term the children will learn their number bonds (up to 100). We will send home an individual target for each to work on for a few weeks. We will encourage the children to practise their number bonds in their orange homework book. The targets and the relevant homework will change throughout the year, as we progress through different topics – e.g. we will switch to time tables in the spring and summer terms.

Page 11: Subject Key Date/s Action Needed Done...PG films. Teachers will check to ensure that these films are appropriate for children aged 7-8 years old to watch. Could you please complete

Reading: Reading regularly is an important part of a child’s development. We understand that this doing this daily at home can be challenging, given how hectic life can be. However, listening to your child for ten minutes each time you do find the time, all helps. Please try to listen to your child at least 3/4 times every week. Discussing storylines and characters, or even likes and dislikes about books also helps to encourage children to become more confident in talking about what they are reading. We will always endeavour to listen to children more frequently at school if we are aware that finding time at home can be difficult. Every child in the Year group has a Reading Record. We welcome your comments in this book, as it helps us to form a fuller picture of your child’s reading habits at home and the frequency with which they read. We ask that children read at least three times a week to an adult, and that that adult signs the Reading Record accordingly. Inspirational Person Project: During the 1st half of the Spring term, we will ask the children to complete an extended homework project on an inspirational person. Public Speaking: Also, during the Spring term, we will ask each child to prepare a speech to present in front of their class. This is a whole school homework task. If you have any queries about any of the above, please see your child’s class teacher. Yours sincerely, The Year 3 Teachers
