Stable Internal Fixation in Maxillofacial Bone Surgery A Manual for Operating Room Personnel

With a Foreword by B. Spiessl

Translated from the German by T. Telger

1984. 140 figures. XI, 90 pages. ISBN 3-540-l3593-6

The maxillofacial instrumentation of the AOI ASIF has earned an established place in the armamentarium of the oral surgeon. It is designed to provide a functionally stable internal fixation of the jaws and facial bones and has found application in such areas as traumatology, rehabilitation surgery following tumor excision, and surgery of the temporomandibular joint. The present manual was written to familiarize operation room personnel with the use of the instrument and implants. The book opens with an introductory discussion of the indications for and principles of operative procedures, and the preparation of the patient and instrumentation for internal maxillofacial fixation. This is followed by a brief presentation of necessary nomenclature and three major sections on internal fixation of the mandible, surgical treatment of midfacial fractures, and corrective orthognathic surgery. A special section is devoted to the utilization and care of the individual instruments themselves. In addition, illustrations of table layouts are provided to allow for quick references when it comes to preoperative instrument setups.

An excellent supplement to AOI ASIF Instrumentation by Sequin and Texhammar also published by Springer-Verlag, this manual is not only a valuable reference for operating room personnel, but also required reading for oral surgerons.

Medical Illustrator: D. Cain

1982. 158 figures. X, 331 pages. ISBN 3-540-11274-X

" ... The book is divided into three parts. The first deals with the causes and effects of craniostenosis with an in-depth review of patterns of localized cranial growth, and the significance of craniostenosis as a pathological process. The second part deals with symptomatology and principles of investigation and treatment and in the third and largest section, a detailed analysis of the simple calvarial deformities is presented and the indications for surgery clearly set out. Next follows a full account of the diagnosis, management and treatment of the commoner craniofacial syndromes with most attention, rightly being paid to Crouzon's and Apert's syndromes.

An excellent chapter on the psychosocial aspects of cranial facial surgery underlines the importance of a full understanding of the psychological problems found in these patients and their relatives.

Throughout the book the quality of photographs, radiographs and line drawings are of a high standard and well chosen. The operative details are clearly described and well illustrated. A useful appendix is provided to set out the organization of a craniofacial unit and a final section, in tabulated format, lists some 58 syndromes associated with craniosynostosis.

This book will provide a comprehensive reference source for all those physicians and surgeons dealing with patients with skull deformities and premature fusion of the cranial sutures ... "
