Objectives:
1- To develop and update CORESTA Recommended Methods as requested by the Scientific
Commission by investigating the technical problems associated with the mechanical smoking of cigars
2- To conduct periodical collaborative studies in order to improve repeatability and reproducibility in
different cigar sizes and types
3- To establish confidence intervals for the smoke yields of all different cigar sizes

- Nice participation level (only 7
labs in 12th study)!
- Many product issues reported
linked to product D (due to
shipment?).
- Therefore, Product D result were
excluded out of the study.

❖ Focus points in the study protocol, in line with the 12th study:
➢ Continued focus on conditioning of product prior to smoking, to ensure
that they are conditioned in line with the CRM’s.
➢ Continued focus on diameter determination to minimize impact on holder
constructions and puff volumes.
➢ Central distribution of samples to avoid differences in sub-samples.

❖ Overall conclusions 13th CS:
➢ Product B: Mean, repeatability and reproducibility estimations in line with previous studies.
➢ Product G: Mean, repeatability and reproducibility estimations in line with previous studies.
➢ Products H and I: Both new products provide levels of mean, repeatability and
reproducibility in line with the expectations, and other products.
➢ The 4 products characterized by the current collaborative study provide yields of nicotine,
NFDPM and CO located in the lower part of the measurement ranges. Further attentions
should be taken to build the 14th CS in accordance with the expected measurement
ranges.
➢ The changes made in the 11th CS and continued in the 12th and 13th CS have a positive
impact on the repeatability and reproducibility estimations.
➢ Learnings product D have to be taken into account in the next CS.

❖ Future activities:
➢ In the 14th Collaborative Study, we intent to include some reference products.
⚫ B: cigarillo, non-ventilated (STG)
⚫ G: CM8
⚫ C or a larger reference cigar (Swisher or STG)
⚫ H: cigarillo, ventilated (similar products as product B)
⚫ J: a tipped cigar (Altria?)
The timing of the study will depend on the availability of the reference products.
➢ Alignment on reference products.
➢ Next SG meeting: Q2-3 2019 (depending on timing CS).

❖ NWIP #121:
Review of CRM64 & CRM65 to make them more suitable and robust from a
standardization point of view, and to allow other technical solutions to be used as
well in the methods, which result in a similar functional output.
⚫ Updated CRM64 and CRM46 available on the Coresta website.
⚫ Collaborative study performed – report pending (relevant for update CRM65).
⚫ Work started to update CRM66 and CRM67 as well.

❖ NWIP #148:
⚫ Project objective: Identify and resolve technical limitations and challenges
within smoke collection of handmade long filler cigars. Technical report /
guidance which in combination with CRM 64 and 65 can enable the smoking of
handmade cigars
Sealing
Cutting
Lighting/relighting
Smoke trap capacity
Solutions / guidance have been identified for the above. Significant variation within and
between labs have been experienced.
