release your potentialStyle chats to Channel 7’s newest and youngest Queensland Weekender presenter, Sammie O’Brien as she shares how a short-course helped propel her into the position she’s always dreamt of.

HAVE yOu EVER pondered the thought of becoming a newsreader, television presenter, radio host or voiceover professional?

Sammie O’Brien studied Journalism at Qut and grew up interested in becoming a newsreader so she could present on television. But, it wasn’t until her participation in the Media Potential course that she realised there were more opportunities available in media than straight news reading.

Sammie says during the course she was made to feel like a real presenter; reading mock Great South East scripts, practicing pieces to camera and learning to read an autocue.

“We did a lot of stuff with tPD Media, who produce all the local lifestyle and adventure style shows and I absolutely loved it! I soon realised

that was where my passion was; lifestyle, travel and adventure.”

Sammie believes the course is a great starting point to kick start any media hopeful’s career.

“It definitely boosts confidence, as you feel like you know what you’re doing by the end of it.

they also help you with things you wouldn’t even know where to start with, like how to get an agent, casting tips and networking opportunities, which all help you launch your career,” she says.

In addition to Sammie, the Media Potential course has also fostered numerous other students into careers in television, either in front of the camera or behind as producers, including national weather presenter Amanda Duvall and Foxtel National Geographic channel’s Wild Survivor presenter Philip Breslin.

It IS SAID that up to 93 per cent of communication is nonverbal, and creating a great first impression is what’s motivated Mark Ferguson of Wil Valor to start the uP social initiative.

Launching 10 months ago, uP (‘unlimited Potential’) helps men who are unemployed dress for job interviews through delivering suits, business shirts, trousers, ties, shoes, belts and cufflinks to non-profit organisations.

Many clients are either recently unemployed, long term unemployed or refugees and Mark Ferguson says uP helps clients stand out from the crowd through their personal presentation.

“uP helps men look and feel their best,”

Mark says. “Free clothing is not the solution to their position in life but looking good helps create self-belief and this self-belief is what can change a man’s path.”

As well as creating the ideal wardrobe, uP trains volunteers on the ideal fit and how to best combine colours, patterns and styles for each individual man to suit their particular job interview.

Mark says so far uP has delivered many garments to its non-profit partners and they are looking to expand the initiative.

“the silent gratitude I have received from dressing these men for success has driven me to expand the initiative’s reach.”

If you’re interested in supporting uP, please donate preloved men’s clothing to the studio at Shop 5, 41 Park Road Milton.

I was about to attempt a very steep sandy incline in the ‘Crusty Cruiser’, the car I’d been assigned for my weekend of four-wheel driving on Fraser Island, and my guide Dave Darmody from Australian Offroad Academy had sidled into the passenger seat, notioniong to the trees behind me as he gave instructions.

Heart racing, I put the accelerator down and made it three quarters of the way up before realising I wasn’t going any further. We were stuck; two wheels, the front right and back left were spinning in the air. Hitting the break (not the clutch) I was now about to learn another vital skill - the art of vehicle recovery.

Myself and nine other intrepid female travellers were exploring the ‘world’s biggest sandpit’ as guests of

kingfisher Bay Resort, learning how to navigate the island via 4wd and having plenty of fun along the way.

As a kid, my family and I camped on Fraser every September. For me, the island had always exuded a magical charm, and I was delighted to discover it still did. Putting our newfound skills to the test, we visited the gorgeous Lake Mckenzie - which is still the most beautiful body of water I’ve ever seen - canoed along the picturesque foreshore of the resort, and jetskied across the bay to Pelican Bank, where pristine, turquoise water lapped at the sand.

I walked away from the trip with a bunch of new gal pals, the confidence to tackle any terrain in 4wd, and the reaffirmation that Fraser Island really is one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you haven’t been yet, it’s definitley one to add to the bucket list!

THE FUTURE OF STYLING UNVEILED MAY 2015

NEStLED WItHIN tHE heart of the old town amid Arabic-inscribed walls, lies an ancient realm a world away from here. A place tourists flock to in search of authentic North Africa, envisioning tales of Arabian Nights or Ali Baba and the Forty thieves.

Marrakech is a Pandora’s box of bucket-list wishes for any intrepid traveller, inspiring dreams of incurable Moroccan wanderlust. At night, the city is alive with an array of enigmatic characters from musicians to storytellers, monkey-trainers and magicians.

Narrow alleyways of enchanting souks and mystical maze emporiums selling trinkets and

treasures lie at every corner – a labyrinth of boutiques to admire handcrafted knick-knacks such as carpets, lanterns, Arabic shoes and extravagant silver mirrored teapots. Charming stall-owners entice travellers into their small Aladdin’s caves of delight, indulging in amusingly harmless haggling.

the bazaar’s food stalls are intoxicating, with a plethora of aromas and flavours to appease the senses, from lemons to chillies, olives and mint. Mountains of ground paprika, turmeric and saffron are piled up high like the Sahara desert’s dunes – a mere 568 kilometres away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

the 12-hour trek to Merzouga’s wilderness is where travellers will truly appreciate authentic North Africa. you’ll succumb to Morocco’s charms after exploring blazing hot sands by camel back, devouring delicious couscous tagines around the campfire, becoming beguiled in Berber men’s chants to the beat of an African drum all before camping underneath shimmering skies alight with a thousand specks of glittering stars.

yOu ARE PROBABLy familiar with her work, without even realising it. kym Barrett is passionate about telling stories through costumes – and she has created some of the most influential clothing seen in Hollywood movies in recent years.

From a childhood spent living on Christmas Island before attending boarding school in Australia, kym went on to study at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney where she became acquainted with Baz Luhrmann, which led her to work on the costumes for his 1996 film Romeo and Juliet.

Since, kym has won and been nominated for numerous awards for her costume design for films such as the Matrix, From Hell and Eragon.

For tOtEM, kym’s designs reflect many facets of the creation and evolution of life and the development of civilizations on earth. Her use of colours and fabrics also work to echo the theme of the cycle of the seasons.

“Although tOtEM is quite fantastical, there’s also a sense of reality,” says kym. “the costumes were inspired by documentary film and I wanted them to have a kind of documentary patina, even though we were inventing our own reality.”

tOtEM premieres in Brisbane on April 10, 2015 under the Big top at the Northshore Hamilton.

kAtIE StEVENS, OF Visual Beauty, has worked within the beauty and fashion industries for the past 10 years and has recently noticed a shift in

Brisbane women’s attitudes towards cosmetic tattoo art.

She says more and more people are beginning to realise how effective it is in enhancing beauty, while saving time applying make-up daily.

“Especially, living in Queensland, the humidity melts, fades and irritates the skin – cosmetic tattooing is the perfect solution for everlasting makeup,” katie says.

Achieving more prominent eyebrows, defined eyes or pronounced lips that stay put is easy, by using pigments that have been specifically designed for cosmetic tattoo art.

1. Brows: A natural looking semi-permanent brow can be achieved by creating individual tattoed hair strokes, where shaping, arching and thickening of the brow can be evident for two-to-three years. Say goodbye to pencilling or tinting.

2. Eyeliner: Eyeliner frames the eyes and can enhance the natural lash line. Having to pencil them each day can be time-consuming and tricky to get the perfect line, however with cosmetic tattooing you can achieve the perfect liner for years (top or bottom) — no more smudges or squinting in the mirror.

3. Lips: Lip liner can help create the illusion of fuller, more defined lips or correct uneven shape. With cosmetic tattoo art you can constantly have lip liner on or go for a natural colour blend for a semi-permanent lipstick look.

How did milani’s Wardrobe come about? After finishing my university degree and working as a youth worker for three years, Mum and I came up with the idea. I’ve never worked in fashion before so this is completely out of my realm.

Can you explain the concept behind milani’s Wardrobe? Some people can’t afford to wear designer clothes, so we are giving clients this opportunity. When people go to an event they are plastered all over social media and won’t wear the same dress again. If you hire a dress, you don’t have to worry about cleaning it or paying a huge price. We charge a small percentage of the RRP, and will deliver it and collect it at a time convenient for you.

What brands do you stock? Mainly Australian brands such as Manning Cartell, Alex Perry, Aurelio Costarella and thurley.

Where do you see your business in the future? Down the track, I would love to hire out designer bags – yves Saint Laurent, Chanel. I would also love to possibly design a few pieces too!

Which is your favourite dress in your collection? the Sahara dress from thurley – white with gold foil. [Designer] Helen O’Connor can do no wrong!

from brute to beautyHOW DO WE subtly guide men in the direction of good skin care for healthy skin? Here are FIVE ways to try:

Choose a gentle, foaming cleanser, tell him •it’s his new shaving cream and leave it in the shower. Cleansers make for excellent shaving creams and don’t disturb the skins’ balance.Stop him using your body buff and invest in a •daily serum with AHA to remove blackheads.Mattifying moisturiser with SPF lowers •the risk of skin cancer and he won’t even know it’s a moisturiser. Men LOVE eye cream! As soon as you •put eye cream on he’ll love looking in the mirror to see his fine lines disappearing.Purchase a vitamin A cream for night •use. this will help regulate oil, repair the skin and help with sun damage.

tell him how great he is looking every time he finishes the regime ladies. He’ll love the attention of being told he looks younger, cleaner and more refreshed. Next mission; stopping him from stealing your products!

corporate eventsWHILE WEDDINGS ARE usually the primary drivers of colour, theme and event concepts, all is not lost for the corporate world. Out-of-the-box themes for business events are having a resurgence and it’s not a moment too soon.

Live acrobats artfully suspended from the ceiling, 3D projected images on every wall and even live sound effects - all are interactive and exciting additions that can add impact and a WOW factor to your next work function.

From a styling perspective, a striking monochromatic scheme, a naval influence, a riot of colour (think pop art) or even the classic metallic palette make a strong statement and breath-taking first impression when guests enter a venue or function space.

A naval theme can be achieved with rigging, custom-made lifebuoys and life-sized boats, while giant games can also be a great addition to any theme for a terrific team building element.

Remember to always consider whether the event style is a true reflection of your company’s image in the marketplace.

food triggers for headachesAVOIDING RED WINE, cheese, chocolate, or even caffeine? there are many types of food and drinks that headache sufferers avoid due to the threat of a migraine attack.

knowing what type of food or drink to avoid can definitely help prevent a headache from occurring. there are simple ways to test if you are allergic to certain food elements, either by self trial and error, or by getting an allergy test.

the question is, ‘will avoiding certain foods and drinks really help you stop your migraines?’ the answer is ‘NO’. If you are doing so you are only hiding and stopping the symptoms from occurring and not treating the cause of your headaches.

the latest research has found those with food allergies have a sensitive brainstem, resulting in the body being sensitive and allergic to certain food elements. Avoiding eating certain foods can help, but will not treat your headaches.

So, have you had your brainstem assessed and treated? Organise one now, so you can eat and drink all the divine food the world has to offer!

turn up the heatBEAtING tHE WINtER chill and heating your home efficiently in the cooler months is achievable, through environmentally friendly, wood heating options.

For the first time in Australia, 2015 will see the introduction of an efficiency rating to go along with the emissions level for every wood heater for sale on the Australian market.

the emissions level for wood heaters in Australia has been reduced by over 40 per cent this year, which has seen both sides of the market stand up and take notice.

We at Aussie BBQs & Fireplaces have always taken pride in the fact that we stock a wide variety of highly efficient wood heaters, both freestanding and inbuilt, whose efficiencies and emissions levels are well ahead of the 2015 standard.

From contemporary to traditional, a fireplace is also a stylish inclusion for a new or existing home. It is safe to say that the future of wood heating in Australia is clean, green and has a bright future!

creating easter treatsFROM CHOCOLAtE EGGS to hot cross buns, sweet treats made with family and friends are beautiful traditions to look forward to.

For some fun with kids, why not try making your own Easter-themed chocolates? All you need are some moulds (think eggs or bunnies), some basic equipment and chocolate!

For those that like slightly more of a challenge, you can even make filled chocolates – either with a ganache or fondant centre. Once you have the base right, these can be flavoured with a variety of tastes from Cointreau to mint (only use flavourings made specifically for chocolate to ensure consistency is not compromised).

As a more traditional option, the good old favourite hot cross bun is a comforting combination of soft dough redolent with aromatic spices and sultanas and topped with a sweet glaze.

Currently, 90 per cent of people do not update the value of their precious jewellery and are not fully aware of what their policy really covers. It is important to check the fine print of your insurance cover, as chances are it is not what you think it is. sporting mother’s daysWE SEE MANy sporting stars spoil their mums throughout the year, but Mother’s Day is, traditionally, the perfect time for stars to recognise their mothers for their commitment to shaping their life.

A sporting career not only defines a person but also shapes their family. It is usually the first topic of conversation, and always gets asked about before other news. these are the good times when parents can sit back and enjoy the successes of the commitment they made several years ago.

But great success doesn’t come without sacrifice. Financial expense, an incredible amount of time and constant enthusiasm and encouragement can sometimes come at the expense of other siblings.

Depending on the earning capacity of the chosen sport, Mother’s Day might mean a trip away, a trip to a game, an experience that money can’t buy or just a beautiful gesture. Whichever it is, make sure you take the time this Mother’s Day to recognise your mum’s incredible dedication.

Mother’s Day really is the most noteworthy national day we have!

EVERyBODy LOVES A good competition but is it attracting the right audience for your brand? Competitions can bring an influx of engagement, but at the same time it can be deflating when your new following isn’t loyal or the right demographic. So, how do you attract attention from genuine punters who aren’t in it just for the thrill of the win?

Impact – Offer a prize that is valuable in experience not necessarily dollars, is simple to market and delivers a WOW factor.

Execution – Choose marketing channels that allow you to reach yOuR target market and are measurable. Facebook, business collaborations, media partners (to name a few).

Simplicity – What do you want your audience to do? Like, share, sign-up, regram? Be clear on the rules of entering and keep it simple!

Lastly, don’t set yourself up for disappointment and have fun with it! A competition should be seen as a branding exercise; an opportunity to generate conversation, engagement and a buzz around your business - any new subscribers and followers are a bonus!

enhancing your pearlsPEARLS ARE NAtuRE’S gems and can be worn so many different ways. they are as unique as the person who is wearing them, which is why choosing the right strand says just as much about your own individuality as the precious piece itself.

It is important to remember that in order to invest in the perfect set of pearls, they must be made to measure for height, weight, colouring and personality. Each are unique, and there is a risk associated with purchasing pearls online.

Do you want to get the most out of your beautiful strand of pearls? A clasp allowing you to adorn your pearls with enhancers can be added and come in many different styles including cameos, lockets, vesta cases and pomanders.

At Panda Pearls we recently added an enhancer to a customer’s set of pearls which featured a World War I medal for Valour. What was sitting in a drawer now has a new lease on life - what a wonderful provenance!

We are happy to work with your budget and individual needs to find the right pearls and enhancer for you.

finding your bathroom styleCHOOSING A StyLE for your bathroom is a long-term investment, on style, functionality and personal value. Which style suits you?

Art Deco: Flourishing in Paris, the Art Deco style (pictured) features geometric patterns and angular shapes. this design inspires a feeling of glamour and elegance with a bold aesthetic.

Contemporary: Contemporary style is light, airy and comfortable. the adage ‘less is more’; is the essence of this style, which uses clean lines, organic forms and bold colours.

Country: Inspired by nature, this style uses soft hues of creams, blues, fresh greens, rosy pinks and a touch of yellow to add summer warmth and an escapism from the stress of urban living. key textures used are warm woods and tactile copper.

Hotel: Hotel bathrooms bring a touch of luxe to the home. Clean, simple and luxurious; it adds a quirky element, with the use of texture and vibrant colour. the colour schemes lean towards a natural palette, often using dark tones to add an extra punch.

social styleONE OF OuR most basic desires is to belong. It’s important for our self-esteem to confirm our place in the community and our dress confirms our belonging to a particular part of society.

With this in mind, how would you feel if you had to wear the same shirt, pant or dress every day?

Disadvantaged men and women sometimes have to wear the same clothing each day. How would this situation affect your self-esteem?

Not having appropriate clothing for a job interview can cause feelings of discomfort and reduce confidence, which can be reflected in demeanour and create a poor impression in a job interview. Being able to dress appropriately is not only important for self-esteem but can assist in opening up amazing opportunities.

Donating clothing to Dress for Success (47 Anderson St, Fortitude Valley) and unlimited Potential (at Wil Valor) can go a long way in improving someone’s self-esteem, confidence and opportunities for change. Visit the website for more details.

cooK for mumIt’S tHAt tIME of year when our thoughts turn to mothers, which leads me to memories of childhood meals. My own mother’s culinary repertoire didn’t extend much beyond Vegemite on toast (and she often managed to burn that!)

My earliest inspiration therefore came from my grandmother, a professional cook who owned an apple farm. Naturally, she made a cracking apple crumble with oats and roast pork with crackling and apple sauce. It wasn’t all about apples though - there were plenty of old fashioned favourites like steak and kidney pies, pressed tongue and corned beef with white sauce.

It’s the perfect time to pay your mum (or grandmother) back with a home cooked meal she’ll appreciate this Mother’s Day. I’m looking forward to a slow cider-braised shoulder of pork (or pork cheek) served with cabbage and spiced chutney (apple of course) in memory of my grandmother.

Pick a dish she loves and that you remember fondly and go for it!

my mentor, “coach”PROFESSOR tOM DAVIS, my PhD advisor, went from being a sage on the stage to a guide on the side. Although the way Coach mentors me is different now, 20 years post-graduation, a good mentor facilitates you finding your own direction and assists to develop solutions to career issues. Coach relied upon his experiences and interests, some similar to mine, to build our relationship and understand my challenges and goals.

to find a mentor, look for a person who is where you’d like to be professionally, or a person who does well in an area you’d like to develop expertise. Network with them initially so that you can connect socially too, and later discuss what you want. Meet regularly to discuss work and explore opportunities. Mentors help to direct your life with structure, rather than leaving it to chance.

Over the years, Coach has helped me know more about my profession and has increased my self-confidence. they may forget what you said, but they will never forget the way you made them feel; thanks Coach!

cosmetic inJectablestHERE IS A lot of talk these days about dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. the increased demand for these treatments have led to a boom in the number of institutions offering them, so where to go and what to choose have become hard for the customer to decide.

If the wrinkles bothering you are only there when you move your facial muscles, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, then anti-wrinkle injections are most likely the best solution. If the lines are permanently visible, then filler is more likely to solve the problem.

Injectable treatments are not a drive-thru service. It is critical for professionals to provide clients with individual consultations, which determine their desired outcome, as well as realistic and tailor made treatment plans to achieve these outcomes. It is also crucial to provide clients with a continued treatment plan over a 12 month period and three to four-monthly reviews.

to find out which treatment best suits your needs, book a consultation today.

StAV AND I already spend too much time together in a small studio, so the idea of a team bonding experience where we are locked in a room might seem crazy...However since seeing the new craze of “Escape Rooms” appear on Ellen and on an upcoming episode of the Big Bang Theory, we decided to give it a crack. they’re popping up all over the world and the premise is you have 60 minutes to use your skills and wits gathering

clues, cracking codes and solving puzzles in order to escape the room before the time runs out! Dressed up in detective costumes, Stav, our producers tim and Peta, intern Jase and I went to Escape Hunt in West End and after a bit of arguing and a few laughs managed to escape the room with 20 seconds to spare! Book a room and get to know how your workmates or loved ones deal with stress.

It MAy BE April, but but no geek I know is calling it April…it’s “A-vengers age of ultron-pril”. yes the new Avengers movie hits our screens April 23 and there are so many reasons to be excited! the main reason that geeks can’t wait is that the first Avengers movie was so good that we have to think this one will be as good, if not better (in Joss we trust). However, other reasons we love the Avengers are that it’s accessible to the wider

audience; women like it because Chris Hemsworth is buff, men who don’t like comic books like it ‘cause Scarlett Johansson is gorgeous and everybody else loves Robert Downey Jnr. No longer do comic book nerds have to drag friends to the cinema explaining why the Hulk could beat thor in a fight (nope!) because now everyone is lining up to see Captain America, Hawkeye and Nick Fury beat up James Spader - and I couldn’t be happier!

WHEN HER LIFELONG passion worked its way into her existence, Jessy Cameron had such a strong desire that courage was never an issue. Having always harboured a love of beautiful treasures, it was only natural that Jessy create her own digital jewellery box, online boutique Molten Store in 2011. Drawing inspiration from storytellers, visionaries and “people who celebrate the fantastical and create their own utopia”, Jessy’s pursuit of adventure and wanderlust tendencies inform the concept of Molten Store. She says the boutique is a “symbol of inspired personal expression” and many of her designs are based on relics discovered on her travels. She has since launched a fragrance, her own jewellery label and plans to open the flagship Molten Store in April. She describes Brisbane as “a wonderful city to start a business in; there’s an undercurrent of creativity that swells up and moves you forward if you’re willing to dive in.”

ISABELLA StuDIED FASHION design at tAFE, thinking it would open the door to styling, but she ended up falling in love with the world of design. Born and bred in Brisbane, Isabella has followed in her Italian mother’s footsteps by starting up her own fashion label and designing her first two collections, which are available online. Isabella says she has watched her business grow since she discovered a niche for designing custom-made garments for private clients. Visual and focused, Isabella is inspired by touching and feeling her fabrics and says clean lines, simplicity and feminine details take the lead in her designs, “whether it’s a frill attached to a hemline or a dress so full of fabric you can’t see your toes”.

JuLES tOGNINI NEVER wanted to be a hairdresser. Owning a fashion label for five years, it wasn’t until travelling around South America that he began cutting fellow travellers’ hair on the beach in exchange for beer that he realised he had a talent. Being built on the philosophy that your hair is the ultimate accessory and an essential part of your persona, the award-winning family business was opened by Benni tognini, his father, in 1987 and Jules put his own swing on things when he opened AkA togninis. Now, he says he has “the greatest job in the world, and when you find a job that you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Many years’ experience has allowed him to know his clients inside out, and his favourite thing about his job is when a client says: “I trust you”.

AFtER REFINING HER skills both in Brisbane and overseas, Alexandra Ponting was propelled to start her own interior design business, AP Design House, in 2010. Her design philosophy is to challenge people’s sense of balance, avoid trends, elude the contrived, but most of all to follow your instinct and never forget your sense of humour. She says her favourite thing about her job is building something special that you passionately believe in, with a team of people you admire and respect. Inspired by a myriad of artists, designers and creatives, Alexandra uses the overall colour palette in her studio to inspire others, and says her mother was her defining motivator. “Mum has always instilled in me to do what I love, go with your gut and work hard for what you want”.

ON tHE DRIVE to work as an executive for an alcohol company, Luke waited at the traffic lights and listened to one of his mentors on a podcast say: “the average person lives for 4000 weeks, so work out how many you have lived and if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, make a change”. He wrote his letter of resignation, was unemployed two weeks later and slept for the next four days. Luke says he has “always had heavy stubble to a beard his whole life” and despite all his friends thinking he was crazy, he discovered a gap in the market and made it his passion – and so his beard grooming business, the Bearded Chap was born. His products are made from “the finest ingredients, to keep beards looking, feeling and smelling like a real man should”, and he now ships his luxury products worldwide.

pearls through history

tHe roaring 20s — roPes and layeringPossibly the most iconic of all jewellery pieces from the 20s, women layered multiple ropes of various lengths around their necks and wrists. Coco Chanel was a big promoter of pearl necklaces, which also became popular with the fashion elite, screen sirens and flappers.

tHe 50s — CHokersVintage styles are

experiencing a resurgence, and who better to look to for inspiration than

Audrey Hepburn? While the choker is also coming back into fashion, there are many new modern

ways to incorporate pearls into the choker trend.

…and noW — Pearl earringsIt’s the return of the pearl earring. Modern day fashionistas are adding a touch of glamour to their everyday looks by wearing pearl studs, chandelier or teardrop earrings, with the double stud pearl earring especially popular with celebs of late!

NAPOLEON PERDIS SEES beauty in women of all ages, including the women he is surrounded by in his own family – from his Mum, Liana and wife, Soula-Marie to his four daughters, Lianna, 15 and 13-year-old triplets Athina, Alexia and Angelene. they’re also his built-in focus group when it comes to developing new concepts for his multi-million dollar, international cosmetics brand.

Right now he’s all about helping women of all ages be their best selves.

“My mum represents the over 65s – they need to make sure they

have brows and mascara for face definition and they need luminosity on the skin, while my wife represents the over 40s…she is all about taking care of the skin and prepping it properly for make-up with our serums and primers,” he says.

He explains his daughters are the ‘millennials’ and they are not afraid to try new things or play around with their look. So passionate about the ‘millennials’ he plans to release a new range dedicated to them, with his daughters as the brand ambassadors. Stay tuned!

tHE StARS ALIGNED for Laura Hooper when she and her mother Cathy took ownership of Ella Baché at Hamilton two years ago.

Laura, 28, runs the salon, while Cathy, 52, does the “behind the scenes work.”

“Mum and I have always been close so we work well together. When we heard the salon was for sale it was perfect timing for us

to start a business together,” Laura says.

With 11 years’ experience as a Beauty therapist at Ella Baché, Laura has developed a passion for the brand which she strives to reflect in her salon everyday.

But Laura’s hands-on approach makes for a very busy lifestyle – juggling work, family and caring for her son.

“We have been lucky enough to have the same team since we took over the salon, so we all work together wonderfully,” Laura says. “Most of our staff are mothers too so they are a great support network and I trust all of them which allows me to step aside for family time.”

the team at Ella Baché Hamilton are dedicated to Mother’s Day treatments because, after all, there

is no one more deserving of a little pampering than mum.

Mother’s Day gift vouchers are available in store for all services, plus some exclusive treatments for Mother’s Day.

WHEN JOSEPH OSBORN bought his first 25 hectares of vineyards in the hills of McLaren Vale in 1912, little did he know he would spur on four generations of wine-making.

under the watchful eye of his father d’Arry Osborn, the charismatic Chester Osborn has continued the family legacy as chief wine-maker. More than 60 labels and 25 different grape varieties now sit under the name d’Arenberg Wines (also known as the ‘Red Stripe’ due to the distinctive label, inspired by the d’Arry’s crimson and white school tie).

Brand manager tash Stoodley says Chester has returned the family vineyards to more traditional, environmentally friendly viticulture practices.

“D’Arenberg vineyards have minimal or no irrigation, no soil cultivation, minimal spraying and

most importantly, no fertilisation,” she says.As the only winery to use a basket press method

for all wines, D’Arenberg’s winemaking techniques are instrumental in the quality of their wines. Reds are fermented in old school, wax-lined concrete fermenters and are still foot-trod to this day.

Owning nearly one third of McLaren Vale’s old bush vine Grenache, d’Arenberg has earned the title of ‘Custodian’ of the variety, whilst also being famous for the award-winning the Dead Arm Shiraz.

the bulging list of crazily-titled wines – including the Laughing Magpie, the Footbolt, the Broken Fishplate and the Noble Botryotinia Fuckeliana – continues to grow by the day.

d’arry’s dreamFamous for their flavoursome, quirkily-named wines, d’Arenberg is fast becoming one of Brisbane’s most loved wineries.

Qualified spider veins eXpertsSPIDER VEINS ARE small, often red visible thread veins under the surface of the skin. While treated by a few types of health and beauty practitioners, there are important reasons why you should always choose a qualified Sclerotherapist to treat your spider veins:

may be a symptom of venous insufficiency. Approximately 25 per cent of spider veins are the direct result of underlying varicose veins, beneath the skin. Sclerotherapists use ultrasound to accurately map out your veins and formulate a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Always request an ultrasound examination prior treatment.

Sclerotherapists have expertise. Sclerotherapists undergo rigorous training. they only treat veins; it’s their specialty. you can always be assured they will provide the highest standard of care.

acne eXplainedFEW PEOPLE GO through life without dealing with acne. In fact, it is estimated 83 per cent of Australians aged 15-24 years old suffer from this skin condition.

Acne occurs due to an overproduction of sebum oil in the glands, which travel through pores to the surface of the skin to protect it from drying out. the build-up of sebum and lack of oxygen in pores causes blockages, which forms pimples. Acne can be exacerbated by various extrinsic factors:

Stress•Diet – high GI and high dairy diets•Pollution – smog, chemicals, toxins•Free radical damage – oxidation•using incorrect skincare products. •

ultraceuticals’ ultra Clear Skincare System targets the entire acne development cycle, working to help reduce sebum production, clear congestion, control lipid oxidation and soothe irritation. Book a consultation with one of our experts to determine whether this range is suitable for your skin.

treating sKin pigmentationIt’S HARD tO avoid the sun in Queensland, but you may want to consider the extra SPF, as pigmentation caused by exposure to uV rays may actually be more ageing than facial lines. In the harsh Australian climate, people are more prone to skin conditions such as discolouration, uneven pigmentation and sunspots. Fair or freckled skin is particularly vulnerable to the sun, with it being very easy to damage the skin cells.

As people age, they want to find solutions and there are a number of options available. there are a range of treatments available for pigmentation. two such effective treatment options include Laser IPL treatments, to reduce pigmentation or sun damage, and pigmentation peels, which are designed to help even out the overall complexion of your skin.

A pigmentation peel is a wonderful treatment to help reduce the appearance of freckles and discolouration. It can result in lightened, brightened skin with an improvement to overall tone. Visit your local clinic to learn more about pigmentation peels today.

tadpole round browtHE 1980’S AND 90’s came and went, but unfortunately left behind this serious condition caused by misguided fashion trends.

undoubtedly, you’ve seen the remnants of this every time you go out in public. the tadpole Round Brow Syndrome starts by shaping your eyebrows to look like a tadpole; rounded and thick at the start, before curving up and over the eye socket and thinning out drastically before coming to an end.

this shape is unflattering on everyone as it sags your eyeline down and leaves you looking 10 years older. It also draws attention to the mirroring circles under the eyes and surrounding lines. Oh, the horror!

If you suffer from tadpole Round Brow Syndrome or are simply in need of some expert brow assistance, the Brow Bar can help! Our exclusive Lift-Lines Program flatters and follows the line of your eyebrow upwards and follow the corresponding parallel lines of your under eye line, cheekbones and jaw line to create a magical lift and make you look at least 10 years younger!

get control of your weightWEIGHt CONtROL MECHANISMS are inherent in our physiology, but our time poor, sedentary modern lifestyles have overridden those mechanisms. Constant up-sizing of food, poor food choices and fast eating are to blame.

With proper management and minimal sabotage, the human body’s hunger/satiety feedback mechanism will maintain a reasonable body weight. this is, of course excluding any medical conditions such as hypothyroidism. When we eat, a cascade of hormonal responses begin in our stomach and gastro-intestinal tract which register satiety in our brain (and tell us we are full). If we eat too fast there is delayed transfer of satiety information to the hypothalamus, which causes overeating, and results in obesity. this mechanism can however be repaired.

the Waitplate System restores the hunger/satiety mechanism through re-education of eating behaviours including portion sizing and reduction in the speed of eating. For more on the Waitplate System, visit www.waitplate.com.

the use by date of your eggsMANy CAREER WOMEN decide to start a family in their late 30s or early 40s. By the age of 38, statistics say one third become pregnant within one year of trying, while one third are infertile. these women access fertility services with varying degrees of success, ranging from immediate success to no success. Some resort to donor eggs, which are a scarce “commodity”, resulting in many women wishing they’d started the journey towards pregnancy earlier.

If you are unlikely to start a family before age 35, or do not have a partner, consider egg preservation. With new vitrification techniques, eggs are “snap frozen” for later use and most clinics offer IVF services up to the age of 50. keep in mind the usefulness of human eggs starts to decline after the age of 35 to the point where IVF pregnancies beyond 42 years are extremely rare.

If you would like to preserve your eggs or find out more information, obtain a referral from your GP and attend a consultation.

how to combat ageing sKinFINE LINES, WRINkLES, sagging skin and uneven texture are symptoms of ageing caused by collagen fibre loss. the only way our skin re-lays new skin cells infused with collagen is to “traumatise” the skin and get it to respond positively, similar to exercising more vigorously to increase cardio capacity. SuMMER COMES AND goes in a flash and if you’re regretting not having made the most of the season by booking a holiday, it’s not too late! the sun is still shining in autumn and Rumba Beach Resort in Caloundra are encouraging locals to stretch out their summer; after all we are living in the ‘Sunshine State’.

With its laidback atmosphere, beautiful untouched scenery and friendly locals, Caloundra, while close in proximity to Brisbane, always makes me feel like I’ve taken a holiday a million miles away.

Rumba Beach Resort have established themself as one of Australia’s most enjoyable luxury beachfront resorts, having recently been awarded as one of the top 25 family hotels in Australia for 2015 by global travel site trip Advisor. From speaking to people in the lobby and elevators, I came across many return guests - and why not, when there are spectacular water views, resort facilities and access to a great shopping and dining strip.

I truly believe, and I’m sure every other

local would agree, autumn is Queensland’s second summer. However, tourists aren’t always so cottoned on, which is why now is the perfect time to book your ‘summer’ holiday with family or friends.

During my stay at Rumba Beach Resort, I experienced everything that encompasses a summer holiday; lovely weather, the hot sand beneath my toes and eating my weight in gelato! the one thing that was different? Less crowds and more bang for your buck! Rumba’s new Stretch your Summer package invites you to unwind in one of their luxury self-contained apartments, relax in the resort’s two beautiful pools and giant jacuzzi and explore the local beaches. I would recommend making use of their free electric bikes to explore Caloundra’s winding bike paths and beachfront streets, heading to the markets on Sunday and watching the sunrise at least once over Moffat beach- just beautiful!
