    BackgroundYouve come from a long line of sailors. As far as anyone can remember, the Johnson men have always been

    workers of the sea. You knew that the only ones who made any money were the ones who owned their ownships. You were bound and determined to own you own ship and now you do.

    Of course, being a captain isnt an easy job. There are always slackers who need a good boot to get the work

    done. Some people think you a little heavy-handed in your discipline, but it gets the job done.

    Now that youve gotten your ship, youve found that life isnt what you expected. Youre up to your neck indebt and the creditors are always on your back when you get to port. At least everyone looks to you for

    guidance, which pleases you. Unfortunately, you had to take a job working with the professor who drives youcrazy. Youve worked with him before, and he never seems to know what hes doing. Youve heard him

    talking to his dead wife more than on one occasion and think hes a little mad. This time he has you off in theNorthern Atlantic and wonders what could be so important that he needed a diving bell /submarine.

    His daughter, Gloria, is pretty enough, but seems as mad as her father. In past trips, shed stare off into

    nothingness for hours on end and make the strangest drawings. When questioned about the drawings, shedrefuse that she had made them. Fortunately, she seems to be more stable since shes engaged. Her fianc,

    Henr, seems like a good influence on her.

    Youve heard rumors that the professor is searching for treasure. You certainly hope so, and if possible, slip alittle treasure in your pocket. It would make up for all of the craziness youve had to endure.

    BackgroundYou were born in Hamburg, Germany. You loved your native land and would never believe that youd ever

    leave it. You were taught by your uncle who was an ace during WWI to fly a plane. Another uncle, taught youto pilot a ship. Youve even been lucky enough to actually pilot a Zeppelin.

    Also, anything that had wheels, you could drive. And if it broke down, well, it wouldnt take too much effort to

    get it working again. You were amazed when the Autobahn was completed, and were able to speed along atunbelievable speeds.

    Unfortunately, things started to get dark in Germany. The outside world didnt seem to see what was going on,

    or maybe they had too many problems themselves. As the Nazis kept gaining in power, you started seeingthings you didnt like. When you actually saw several of your friends beaten and taken by the Brown shirts,

    you knew it was time to leave.

    Youve been able to get odd jobs working with machinery and eventually made it to this ship. You couldntbelieve your eyes when the hybrid diving bell/sub was loaded onboard. You wished you could get inside of it

    and see how everything worked, but you knew the captain would have your ears if you ever got near it. Maybethis will be the night that you can slip inside when everyone else is asleep.

    Youre not certain about the other people on board. The professor seems like a good if not idealistic man. His

    daughter is beautiful, but unobtainable. Her fianc gives you the creeps. You dont know why, but when hestares at you, you feel like he would like to see you dead. Youre amazed that a woman designed and

    constructed the sub.

    BackgroundYour life has seemed to be one tragedy after another. When you were young, you never seemed to fit in with

    the other kids. They were jealous of your artistic abilities, and scared of your habit of becoming totallyabsorbed with your creations. You could spend hours on end working on a special project and not even

    remember what you were doing.

    Your only solace at home was your mother. She was the only one who seemed to care for you. Your fathertried, but he was always interested in the lost land of Hyperborean. He would spend hours on end working on

    researching Hyperborean and you were restricted from entering his office.

    You were sent to a private school, you parents thinking that this would help develop your artistic skills andhopefully make new friends. It helped your art, but not your social skills. You felt even more like an outcast

    there and didnt make any friends. When you learned of your mothers death, you felt like you lost your onlyfriend. When you went home for the funeral, you finally seemed to connect with your father, the professor.

    Upon learning that you didnt like school, your father took you home and brought tutors for you. He would

    teach you history and languages. One strange day, you father talked about Hyperborean. He showed you anartifact, and the next thing you remember is waking up the next morning. When you asked your father what

    happened, he seemed quite excited, but reserved. In the end, you were glad that you were glad that youd madethe professor happy, even if you didnt remember how you did it.

    Your life began to get more exciting after that. Your father kept taking you on more expeditions and youd

    draw the ruins. Sometimes, when looking at the ruins, you could see them as if they were still living places.Amazingly, youd draw these images or sculpt items that youd seen.

    During the last expedition, you met Henre Forte. Here was a man who actually was interested in you. It didnttake long until you were madly in love with him. He respectively asked for your hand in marriage and your

    wedding is to occur after this trip.

    On his last expedition, the professor found an artifact with a crystal. Once you touched the crystal, you had themost bizarre experience and blacked out. When you awoke, the professor was like a little schoolboy and told

    you that he was the happiest father alive. He planned a trip and has invited you and your fianc to discover theland of Hyperborean.

    Youve kept to yourself most of this trip and dont know any of the crew.

    BackgroundProfessor Turtledove has always believed in the existence of the lost land of Hyperborean, the land of the everpresent sun. Your life has been devoted to finding Hyperborean, and youve gone on innumerable missions to

    discover any remnants of Hyperborean.

    Since youve been a child, you were fascinated with swords. Youre a devoted fencer and always carries asword cane.

    You spend days and nights going over ancient artifacts and maps trying to find some reference to Hyperborean.

    During one of these nights, you accidently fell asleep during his research. A lamp got knocked over and a firebegan to consume the library. Your wife, Abigail, found you, but you would not leave the precious artifacts to

    burn. Your wife agreed to help carry the artifacts; and thinking she was right behind him, you left the room. Abeam fell and trapped Abigail in the library and she died.

    You and Abigail had only one child. A very special child, named. Gloria had a very special talent. Sometimes

    shes would enter into trances and say or create things (drawings, sculpture, maps) when she heard you speakthe inscriptions on the artifacts in Atlantean; but mostly if when she had physical contact. On a rare occasion,

    shes even gone into a trance when shes met someone very special. She doesnt remember these episodes, andyou havent discussed them with her.

    On your last expedition, an artifact with a crystal was discovered. Once Gloria touched the crystal, she began

    drawing the most detailed map showing a course to Hyperborean. It appeared that the trip would require the useof a submarine. Using your academic channels, the professor was able to get funding for this final trip.

    With the help of your daughter, her fianc and the crew of the ship, youll finally discover the land ofHyperborean.

    You dont know the crew and you prefer it that way. The captain is in charge of his men, but youre in charge

    of this expedition. This is probably your last chance to fine Hyperborean and youre not going to let someuneducated ships captain tell him what to do.

    Youre hoping that TJ knows her stuff. The sub looks great and tomorrow youll finally get to see the land of

    Hyperborean.

    BackgroundYouve always been mechanically inclined. Your earliest memories are of taking engines apart and putting them

    back together. You excelled at school, to the surprise of your classmates. You learned after getting your PhDthat being a woman in a mans world is not easy.

    Everywhere you tried to get a position, youd either be turned away or given menial tasks. At meetings, you

    would be ignored, and any design suggestions would be turned down without reason. You determined that youwould set up your own company.

    You decided that if the clients wanted a man, then theyd get one; only he didnt exist. For meetings, RJ

    would send you to meet with clients. Youd get to know their wants and needs, and RJ would design it.Soon, you were able to get clients that wanted your designs. They were new and innovated; and the one thing

    the clients really liked, was cheaper than the competition. Not only could your company design, but you couldalso manufacture the products.

    This worked great until the university wanted a hybrid diving bell/submarine. The only caveat of getting this

    contract was that in the final design meetingRJ had to meet with the professor in person. You decided tobring your assistant, Andy, and pass him off as RJ. Unfortunately, the ruse didnt work and the professor was

    outraged. He couldnt believe that you thought he was too stupid to realize that you were the original designer.The Professor agreed to continue with your company, only if you agreed to stop the foolishness and admit that

    you were RJ. You were only too happy to comply with this condition and have been happily working on thehybrid diving bell/submarine.

    The hybrid diving bell/submarine was unlike any design youd ever worked on. The expected pressures that the

    professor was indicating that could be expected were unbelievable. You wondered if the professor wanted toexplore the bottom of the ocean, but you were up to the challenge. Youve overdesigned the sub to be able tohandle 4 people without problems for up to 12 hours. More people could fit, but it would get tight and the air

    supply would get limited.

    You also built in a redundant power supply. You knew that the sub was to be connected to the ship with apower and radio cable, but you never felt comfortable having your life in the hands of others. The sub was

    designed to be able to resurface in any type of emergency. You cant wait to put the sub in the water for its firstexploration dive.

    BackgroundYour life began in Texas. You grew up with the ambition of being a bronco buster. At your first rodeo, youwon several events. The final even was bronco busting and rode The Widow-maker. You were doing fairly

    well until he threw you into the fence. You saw the wood protruding through your leg and knew your lifebreaking horses was over and you passed out.

    You awoke in the hospital and the first thing you saw was a pretty nurse. You fell in madly in love with her and

    eventually married her. While waiting to heal, you got bored and started to read whatever you could find. Yourdoctor and your wife were amazed that you could understand the medical texts and suggested you pursue a

    career in medicine.

    You never had any children with your wife, and recently she died in a train accident. You started hitting thebottle hard and lost your practice. You took the sea and eventually became the doctor about this ship.

    You think the captain is overbearing and abrasive. Youve needed to mend up men after the captain had talks

    with them. You dislike how he treats the men, but acknowledge that the jobs get finished on time.

    Youre not certain about the Turtledoves. The professor and daughter seem a little weird, and the fianc seemslike a different person when Gloria is not around. You feel like you can trust the professor and daughter, but

    not her fianc.

    TJ seems very capable of handling herself and she reminds you of your dead wife.
