THE PASSAGEActs 11:25-26

“ Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

These followers were scattered because of the persecution that broke out in Jerusalem. Acts 11:19

The Apostles stayed in Jerusalem so these were your

every day believers. Acts 8:1

They continued to preach everywhere they went, to all nations and were effective in helping people come to know Christ- Acts 11:19-21

THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE 1st Century believers preached

everywhere they went, to all nations and helped many become believers. They were called Christian because of their lifestyle.

Disciple and Christian are synonyms. Christian = Disciple = Believer

PURPOSEFUL QUESTIONS What is the relationship between a Christian and

a Disciple? How does this change your view of what it means to be a follower of Christ?

What would it have meant to be called a “Christian” to these 1st Century believers?

Do you live your life like the disciples in the 1st Century? If not why?

“ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Cost of Following Jesus “As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay

his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him,

“Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but

first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is

fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
