Acts 3:1-11•1 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, [being] the ninth [hour].
Acts 3:1-11•2 And a certain man lame from
his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;
Acts 3:1-11
•3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.
Acts 3:1-11
•4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.
Acts 3:1-11
•5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.
Acts 3:1-11•6 Then Peter said, Silver
and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
Acts 3:1-11•7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted [him] up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
Acts 3:1-11•8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Acts 3:1-11
•9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God:
Acts 3:1-11•10 And they knew that it was
he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
Acts 3:1-11•11 And as the lame man which
was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
•A. The first eleven verses deals with the healing of a man who had been lame from birth. The man was a beggar and someone would lay him at the gate of the temple each day.
•B. Peter and John went into the temple at the ninth hour, which was actual 3:00pm in the afternoon to pray. Jesus prayed 3 times daily. They prayed at 9:00am , 12noon noon and 3:00pm in the afternoon.
• C. In the early church people of diverse backgrounds found themselves strangely teamed together. A prime example is that of Peter and John. Peter was impetuous forthright, and very bold. John was more quiet and reserved, one was tender and compassionate.
•C. continued
Yet at the established hour of prayer, Peter and John went up together into the temple to pray. God also honored their unity by allowing them to be a part of a miracle.
1. The power of the Blood of Jesus and glory of the Holy Spirit is so strong that men and women of diverse backgrounds can flow together and do the work of God.
•2. The lawyer and security guard can agree together in the name of Jesus. The teacher and the bus driver can agree together and receive a miracle from God. God is not concerned about what you do when it comes to the work of God. He is concerned about the level of your faith.
Acts 3:6•6 Then Peter said, Silver
and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
•D. In verse six(6) we find that Peter and John did not have any money, but they had the power of God, which is more important than money.
•1. Most preachers today have money, but few have the power of God moving through their lives and ministries.
** I would prefer having the glory and power of God rather than a lot of money.
** I thank God, however because we can by faith can have both plenty money and Holy Ghost power.
Acts 3:7•7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted [him] up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
•E. Peter and John prayed for the lame man and he was immediately healed. His ankles and his feet received strength. He began to leap, walk, and praise God. No one had to tell him to praise the Lord.
Acts 3:8-11•8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Acts 3:8-11
•9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God:
Acts 3:8-11•10 And they knew that it was
he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
Acts 3:8-11•11 And as the lame man which
was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
•F. When the people saw him who had been lame walking and praising God it filled them with awe and amazement. They were completely astounded. The lame man who was healed would not let go of Peter and John.
•F. continued Then all the people gathered around them also. The people were caught up in Peter and John. They were acting as if the miracle of healing had been done by them, without God being involved.
• 1. This is a major problem in the church of America. We make stars out of men and women when God is doing something unusual in their lives or ministries. Some people get more excited about (so called Christian Stars) than they do about simply praising God.
• 1. continued It is the responsibility of those men and women not to take the praise that should go to God only. They must be sure to inform the people that God is doing the work and they are just the instruments that God is using.
•G. Peter saw the people had gotten caught up in he and John. This led Peter to inform them that this healing of the lame man was done by God himself and that the purpose of the miracle was to bring glory to the Lord Jesus.
•H. God will reveal His Glory and Power through our lives as long as we are clear on the fact that God is the one who is doing the work. We also must be careful to give God the glory and to glorify Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Acts 3:12-26 •12 And when Peter saw [it], he
answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
Acts 3:12-26 •13 The God of Abraham, and of
Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let [him] go.
Acts 3:12-26
•14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
Acts 3:12-26
•15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
Acts 3:12-26 •16 And his name through faith
in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Acts 3:12-26
•17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did [it], as [did] also your rulers.
Acts 3:12-26 •18 But those things, which
God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
Acts 3:12-26 •19 Repent ye therefore, and
be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 3:12-26
•20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Acts 3:12-26 •21 Whom the heaven must
receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
Acts 3:12-26 •22 For Moses truly said unto
the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
Acts 3:12-26 •23 And it shall come to
pass, [that] every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
Acts 3:12-26 •24 Yea, and all the prophets
from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
Acts 3:12-26 •25 Ye are the children of the
prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Acts 3:12-26 •26 Unto you first God,
having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
• I. Peter now begins to preach his second sermon.
Acts 3:12-13 •12 And when Peter saw [it], he
answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
Acts 3:12-13 •13 The God of Abraham, and of
Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let [him] go.
•J. In verses 14 and 15 Peter points out the three sins of Israel
•They denied the Holy Just One.
•They chose a murderer over Jesus.
•They killed the Prince of life.
Acts 3:14-15
•14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
Acts 3:14-15
•15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
•K. Peter understood the power that would be released through the use of the name of Jesus. Jesus has taught the apostles repeatedly that they could rely on His name.
Acts 3:16•16 And his name through faith
in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
St. Mark 16:17,18 •17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
St. Mark 16:17,18 •18 They shall take up
serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
St. John 14:12-15 •12 Verily, verily, I say unto you,
He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
St. John 14:12-15 •13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
St. John 14:12-15 •14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
St. John 14:12-15 •15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
St. John 15:16 •16 Ye have not chosen me, but I
have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
•L. We too can use the name of Jesus and get results with God. A major key in using the name of Jesus is to trust in the power of the Gospel of Christ. The Gospel of Christ is the power of God according to Romans 1:16.
•L. continued When we use the name of Jesus we release the power of God to do the work and will of God. When we use the name of Jesus we are in affect doing what He would do, if He were here in the natural.
Acts 3:17-18
•17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did [it], as [did] also your rulers.
Acts 3:17-18•18 But those things, which
God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
•M. Peter tells his fellow Jews that he knew they did not know what they were doing when they turned their backs on Christ.
•1. It is an important lesson for us to learn that people can do only what they know. Often times we will lose what God wants to do for us by being upset with people who do ungodly things simply because they don’t know any better. We find ourselves discussing negatively what they are doing and unknowingly we hinder what God would like to do for us.
•2. We also must be careful not to spend too much time attempting to convince an ignorant unbeliever about the things of God.
Titus 3:9-11 •9 But avoid foolish
questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
Titus 3:9-11
•10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
Titus 3:9-11
•11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
• N. Paul tells Titus to avoid and shun foolish questions; and to keep away from vain research into pedigrees. Paul says those things are fruitless, unprofitable and worthless. They settle nothing and they lead nowhere.
•O. . In verse 10 of Titus Chapter 3 Paul says if a man is a heretic; that is to say “if a man is causing divisions among you he is to be rejected after you have warned him once or twice.”
• 1. The word heretic is used only once in the Bible. It means one who holds a heresy; a dissenter, nonconformist. The word itself has no evil meaning. It simply refers to a doctrinal view belief at variance with the recognized and accepted tenets of a system, church, or party.
• 1. It only takes on an evil meaning when sound doctrine is rejected and fallacy is accepted and taught in preference to truth. If the doctrine is unsound and one dissents from the main body that holds the fallacy, then he is a heretic in a good sense.
•P. Peter now says in affect “the crucifixion” of Jesus fulfilled the words of the Prophets.
Acts 3:18•18 But those things, which
God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
•Q. In verse 19 of Acts 3, Peter gives them the conditions of national restoration.
Acts 3:19•19 Repent ye therefore, and
be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
•R. Peter states, in verses 20,21, that second coming of Jesus, which was the subject of all the prophets.
Acts 3:20
•20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Acts 3:21•21 Whom the heaven must
receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
•S. In verse 22 Peter states that Moses predicted the first coming of Christ.
Acts 3:12-26 •22 For Moses truly said unto
the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
•T. Verse 23 Peter makes it clear that if a person refuses to hear the prophet they would be destroyed.
Acts 3:23•23 And it shall come to
pass, [that] every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
•U. Verse 24 Peter states that all the prophets predicted the suffering of Christ.
Acts 3:24•24 Yea, and all the prophets
from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
•U. Verse 24 Peter states that all the prophets predicted the suffering of Christ.
Acts 3:25•25 Ye are the children of the
prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
•V. Verse 25 Peter reminded the Jews of the fact that they were in covenant with God.
• * In Genesis 12:3 God establishes His covenant with Abraham
Genesis 12:1-3 •1 Now the LORD had said
unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
Genesis 12:1-3 •2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
Genesis 12:1-3 •3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
•W. The church today is also in a covenant relationship with God. We receive the same blessings that were pronounced upon Abraham and the Jews.
Galatians 3:7-9
•7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
Galatians 3:7-9 •8 And the scripture, foreseeing
that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Galatians 3:7-9
•9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
•X. In the last verse of Acts chapter 3, Peter tells the Jews that the Gospel is first offered to Israel. Peter also reveals in this verse that “the chief purpose of the coming of Christ and the end of all gospel preaching was to call the believer to turn away from a sinful way of life.”
Acts 3:12-26 •26 Unto you first God,
having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
