Study Hall: Work quietly at your seat (homework, study, draw, read, etc.)

You are not up wondering around the classroom – 1. Sharpen your pencils

2. Sit in your assigned seat3. Materials out, ready to begin at the bell

Block 1: copy all information on page 7 (add to table of contents)

Mrs. Maas email and wiki information• 1. In search box: type James Martin Middle

School (use firefox or google chrome )• 2. Click on faculty / staff• 3. Scroll down to my name: Tracy Maas• 4. click on envelope / Letter to email• 5. click on Earth / Globe to get wiki page

Warm Up block 2 and 3 : on your index card

• Complete as many math problems as you can in 5 minutes:

11 x 6 10 x 9 14 x 5 68 x 12 26 x 2 89 x 70 49 x 3 40 x 6677 x 4 17 x 35

Were you right?

• Answers

Interactive Notebooks

I looked through the notebooks……

• We need review our Table of Contents and check for all activities so far

• These must be in your notebook

Interactive Notebooks

• Go to the Table of Contents • Interactive Notebook Rubric: page 5 • Picture of a scientist page 6• Mrs. Maas email & wiki info page 7 • 1.1 Book Support Challenge page 8

Book Design Activity

• So far, during our group activity you attempted to build a book support knowing:

• the criteria and constraints• the materials you are using

Can we make it better…..

•Who thinks we can make our design better?• Today you will get that chance!

Building a Better Book Design

• Open up your textbook• We will read pages DIV 7 – DIV 9 together• We will stop reading at the section

“Communicate your Results”

Building a Better Book Design

•Any questions about the reading?

1.2 A Better Book Support Design

• Label page 9 • 1.2 A Better Book Support Design (add

entry to table of contents)

•Iteration :define this word using your textbook (DIV 8)

• You will be recording 3 vocabulary words today (use the entire page to define these 3 important vocabulary words)

Building and Testing your new Design

• Based on what you did in our earlier class, or what you saw and heard from the other groups, you will now redesign your book support

• You may have thought of new ideas• You may have heard new ideas

• To keep it all straight, you will now keep records of what you are doing in your group

Book Support Records

• You will complete this informational record sheet noting the following information:

• 1. design #• 2. # of note cards used• 3. # of paper clips used• 4. # of rubber bands used• 5. a view of your design from above• 6. results….what happened?

Iteration• Remember each time you redesign your book

support you are using iteration.• You as scientists must keep detailed records of

each iteration• You will have 20 minutes to build your design

and keep a detailed record of your construction design

• GOOD LUCK!!!

Solution Briefing• You scientists have worked together to rebuild

your design and perhaps even improve it• Now you will get together to share your ideas

and get advice from each other• This will be known as our Solution Briefing in

science class this year!

Solution Briefing• Now we will read pages DIV 9 –

DIV 10 to make sure we understand the importance of a solution briefing in our class

1.2 A Better Book Support Design

• In our notebooks we will now record Vocabulary word #2: Solution Briefing • Use page DIV 10 to define the vocabulary

word • (this should be below vocabulary word

iteration on page 9)

Solution Briefing• You will receive a Solution Briefing form• As each group presents, you will record the

following information:• Group Name (baseball team name)• How well it works (did it pass the challenge?) • Design Ideas (# of each material used)• Construction Ideas (illustration)• Science Ideas (concepts learned)

Solution Briefing

• You will be recording each groups’ information onto this 1 sheet

• Divide your sheet into 4 equal sections• Use can do this by drawing 3 equally spaced

lines • See teacher example

• You are presenting to the students not to me!• Speak loudly and clearly and think about what to

say before you say it.• Organize your presentation• When watching presentations-ask the group to

explain if you don’t know how their design works.• You have 2 minutes to prepare your presentation • You may find it useful to use your Book Support

Record sheet when presenting!

Communicate your work

• I will call on each group to share your results….• If you are presenting, speak clearly and address the

class, not me• If you are listening, be respectful and ask questions

if necessary• Questions????

Let’s Share

Solution Briefing• Overview• Did anyone hear any interesting ideas ?• Did you think of new ideas that might improve

your design?

Copying vs. Crediting

•Teacher will read aloud page DIV 12

Copying vs. Crediting• Scientists are always building on each

other’s ideas• The idea of giving credit to others when

you build from their ideas is not copying!• Copying does not give credit to the people

who thought of the ideas you may have used!

Building on and Benefit from Each Other’s Ideas

•We will read pages DIV 13 together

1.2 A Better Book Support Design

• In our notebooks we will now record vocabulary word #3: Collaborate• Use page DIV 13 to define the vocabulary

word • (this should be below vocabulary word

solution briefing on page 9)

Handouts• You will now add the following 2 handouts into

your interactive notebook under section 1.2 A Better Book Support Design

• This should follow your 3 vocabulary words• Label page 10: Book Support Records (use the

entire page) and add to table of contents• Label page 11: Solution Briefing Notes (use the

entire page) and add to table of contents• Remember how we fold and glue handouts that

put in our notebooks

What’s the Point?

•We will read page DIV 14 together

Remember Scientists…

• Are always building upon each other’s ideas• Think about Crediting vs. Copying
