READING:

A. Psalm 8:4-6, What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him?

v. 5, For Thou hast made him a little lower that the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

v. 6, Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet.

B. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

C. I Thessalonians 5:23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION:

What is man? I struggled for 20 years with that question. Never has there been a truth whose time has so truly come as the study of man. I feel God is doing a new thing in the earth today through the exploding revelation of end-time truth. It is vital, and it is living.

These lessons are part of the end-time truth. No truth has ever rejoiced my heart more than the material in this study guide. I trust it will become a burning fire in your bosom and a shining light in your witness for Christ.

We are dealing not with mere theory or idealism, but with original life and explanations of today’s life.

Page 9: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The New Thing Lesson 1

8

1. THE TWO CATEGORIES OF TRUTH--HISTORIC AND PERTINENT

A. Historic truth is full truth, but it does not cast fear from a tormented brain. Historic truth does not show how to set modern prisoners of drugs, sex, and frustrations free from the devil’s power. It is just plain historic truth, and we are glad to have it.

1) Noah: He was warned by God of impending judgment, and instructed to build an ark. He was obedient in saving his family and the animals. It is historic truth.

2) Joshua: The walls of Jericho fell down miraculously. The ruins can be seen today near modern Jericho. An archaeological guide can describe the ancient gates, towers and walls. It is all truth.

3) Jonah: He was disobedient to the Lord’s instruction to preach repentance to Ninevah. He was swallowed by a great fish, was vomited onto shore, preached to the city, and saw them saved. This is also truth.

B. Pertinent truth, on the other hand, is the truth God has designed for this particular hour of human history. It is truth that delivers us from the problems of today, and gives strength in this hour of toil and tears.

1) Salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, is pertinent truth.

2) Water baptism for the burying of the old man to walk in newness of life is pertinent truth.

3) The truth of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which girds the Church with the weapons of warfare to defeat any and every enemy of the Church today is pertinent.

4) The truth of divine deliverance from demons is pertinent truth.

5) The truth of vital living faith, which causes a normal average person to rise up strong, is pertinent truth.

6) Prophetic truth is pertinent truth.

2. IN MY MINISTRY

A. I minister only in a limited capacity through traditional and historic Christian truth. My calling is to answer the questions of my generation, to untie the knots of today’s problems, to preach cosmos in a chaotic world and pertinent truth.

The New Thing Lesson 1

9

B. Indiana Christian University is dedicated to the teaching and the proclaiming of pertinent truth which can be used by ministers and key laymen to conquer our adversaries in this hour of world history.

3. MAN IS A TRINITY--GOD CREATED MAN IN TOTAL PERFECTION.

A. The purpose of these studies is to make us aware of the three-dimensional nature of the human personality. It also teaches us how to yield each part of the human personality to our Lord Jesus Christ.

B. The only way to be sure we understand this subject is to say it and then resay it. I mean by this, to iterate and reiterate the subject matter. I will not be repeating material so much as expanding it. We must be sure we have a grasp on these truths and knowledge in order to share them with other believers.

THE TOTAL MAN

11

READING: Genesis 1:26-28, And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

v. 28, And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

INTRODUCTION: The creation is Earth’s most dramatic story. God, the Sovereign of the Universe, in His eternal wisdom conceived the desire to create an intellectual, soulical creature of moral responsibility and integrity. Man is the most intricate creature of all original creations. Even to this moment he is a labyrinth of mystery.

1. MAN WAS CREATED BY GOD--HE DID NOT EVOLVE Genesis 1:26, And God said, Let Us make man in our image, after Our likeness:

and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

2. MAN WAS CREATED TO HAVE DOMINION Genesis 1:28, And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and

multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

The Total Man Lesson 2

3. HE RULED PLANET EARTH Genesis 1:28, . . . every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

4. MAN AND HIS MAKER COMMUNED IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN

This was his spirit functioning.

5. ADAM REBELLED It was deliberate. It was volitional.

6. HE LOST HIS HEAVENLY CLOTHES OF FIRE Before he rebelled, Adam was clothed like God.

A. Ezekiel 8:1-2, 4, And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, of the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord God fell there upon me.

v. 2, Then I beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of His loins even downward, fire; and from His loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of amber.

v. 4, And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that I saw in the plain.

B. The same fire was in the burning bush when the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses.

Exodus 3:1-2, Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

v. 2, And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

7. HE LOST HIS COMMUNION WITH GOD One third of Adam died.

Genesis 3:10, And he said, I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Page 14: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Total Man Lesson 2

13

A. Adam’s body did not die.

B. Adam’s soul did not die. He still had his mind, emotions, and will.

C. Adam’s spirit ceased its relationship with God.

8. ADAM WALKED OUT OF EDEN WITH EVE, HIS WIFE A. They were devastated. They were separated from God.

B. Now they had two parts. They lost their trinity--their triune being.

Neither Adam nor his seed was now the total man.

These studies are designed to show us the way back to the original total man’s existence with God.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 3

THE DIVINE PURPOSE

15

READING: I Corinthians 15:45, And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

INTRODUCTION: These lessons are imperative in this modern age. They explore the inner space of the human personality. The insane asylums, prisons, and hospital floors with locked doors for the emotionally disturbed must be invaded with these truths.

1. MAN AND THE ATOM It is amazing that modern man, with his remarkable development of science, can

split the atom; yet, he cannot divide his soul from his spirit.

Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

2. MAN IN THE AIR AND UNDER THE SEA Man has developed a vehicle to fly to the moon; yet, he cannot comprehend the

complexity of his mind, nor control his emotions, nor direct his will power. Man must seek to understand the intricacies of his inner personality. One of man’s greatest needs is to know himself.

Man can build cities that reach up to heaven.

Man, with ships and submarines, can swim like a fish in the sea. Man, in airplanes and airships, can fly through the air like a bird; yet, his own personality is in chaos, confusion, and illness.

Page 17: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Divine Purpose Lesson 3

16

3. TRIUNE MAN A most important fact for every human being to know is that he or she is a triune

person--a three-fold personality.

Man must know that the most important part of him died in the Garden of Eden because of transgression against God. This part is only revived at rebirth in Jesus Christ.

A. Ephesians 2:1-2, And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

v. 2, Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.

B. John 3:1-3, There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

v. 2, The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him.

v. 3, Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Man must come to know that his intellect, emotions, and will are parts of his Adamic nature. They are wild and unharnessed. They will lead him away from God unless they are harnessed by the Holy Spirit.

Man must be taught the inner workings of the human personality. You must know how God can make the three parts of you into one.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 4

THE TRIUNE UNIVERSE

17

READING: Matthew 3:16-17, And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him: v. 17, And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. I John 5:7, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

INTRODUCTION: Man is positioned in a total universe of: A. Tripods--three extremities (not four or two) B. Triads--three things or ideas C. Triune--three-in-one D. Tripartite--three-fold, three parties E. Tritheism--three distinct gods F. Trinity--three persons, or group of three Everything in the universe which bears the marks of perfection is divinely

engraved with a three.

1. TIME We count the fullness of time by three: 1) The past--old time 2) The future--new time 3) The present--uniting of time; present holds hands with the past and the

future. It is the livable part of time.

Page 19: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Triune Universe Lesson 4

18

2. SPACE Total calculation of space is three: 1) Longitude--or length 2) Latitude--or breadth 3) Altitude--or height

3. MATTER Water: H20 is three:

It has hydrogen and oxygen: ratio of two atoms of hydrogen to one of oxygen.

1) Water is a liquid to drink. 2) Water is a solid--ice. 3) It can be a vapor--steam.

4. A COMMON TREE IN YOUR YARD These three make a whole: 1) It is bark. 2) It is pulp. 3) It is sap.

To remove one is to destroy all.

5. THE ATOM IS MADE UP OF THREE 1) Proton--the positive charge 2) Electron--the negative charge 3) Neutron--uncommitted

There can be no universe without all three, living and flowing together. Each fulfilling a totality of the whole.

6. HOME 1) Father 2) Mother 3) Child

Page 20: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Triune Universe Lesson 4

19

7. THE TRINITY OF GOD There are three in the divine godhead:

I John 5:7, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Trinity of being.

All have gender--Father, Son and Holy Ghost (He/His). All have visible parts.

8. THE FATHER A. Fingers--at Mt. Sinai where He wrote the Law in stone.

Exodus 31:18, And He gave unto Moses, when He had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

B. A voice--a mouth

Genesis 3:8, And they heard the voice of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

C. An ear

1) Exodus 3:7, And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of My people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.

2) Job 34:25, Therefore He knoweth their works, and He over-turneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

D. Moses saw God’s hinder parts.

Exodus 33:23, And I will take away Mine hand, and thou shalt see My back parts: but My face shall not be seen.

E. Eyes

1) Psalm 11:4, The LORD is in the holy temple, the LORD’s throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men.

2) Psalm 18:24, Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His eyesight.

3) Psalm 33:18, Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy.

Page 21: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

9. JESUS, THE SON A. A babe born in Bethlehem

Luke 2:11-12, For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

v. 12, And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger.

B. At His water baptism

Matthew 3:13-17, Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

v. 14, But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of Thee, and comest Thou to me?

v. 15, And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered Him.

v. 16, And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

v. 17, And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

C. At His transfiguration

Mark 9:2, And after six days Jesus taketh with Him Peter, and James and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and He was transfigured before them.

D. As a sacrifice from heaven

John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

E. A man in Nazareth

Matthew 2:23, And He came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Page 22: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

21

F. At His crucifixion

Luke 23:33, And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

10. THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT A. He teaches.

John 14:26, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

I Corinthians 2:13, Which things also we speak, not in the words which mans wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

B. He testifies.

John 15:26, But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me.

C. He guides through prophecy.

John 16:13, Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.

D. He convicts.

John 16:8-11, And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

v. 9, Of sin, because they believe not on Me;

v. 10, Of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and ye see Me no more;

v. 11, Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Acts 5:1-5, But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

v. 2, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostle’s feet.

v. 3, But Peter said, Ananais, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Page 23: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Triune Universe Lesson 4

22

v. 4, Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

v. 5, And Ananais hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

11. HOW ARE THE THREE ONE? A. In will: Jesus said in Luke 22:42, Not my will, but Thine done.

B. In purpose:

John 3:16, For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son.

C. In prayer:

John 15:16, . . . Ask the Father in My name, He may give it to you.

D. In judgment: God has committed all judgment to the Son.

1) John 5:22, For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.

2) Acts 17:31, Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.

12. THE HUMAN PERSON IS A TRIUNITY Man himself was created a triune being.

I Thessalonians 5:23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

13. THE TRINITY OF SALVATION A. All salvation from the beginning is in three parts.

I John 5:8, And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Page 24: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Triune Universe Lesson 4

23

B. Israel was saved from Egypt by:

1) The blood of the lamb on the door post.

2) The dividing of the Red Sea

3) The cloud of God’s glory which overshadowed them.

Here we have the blood, the water, and the Spirit.

14. THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT The very heart of the Church is made up of three plus three plus three, which

means perfection plus perfection plus perfection.

There are nine gifts of the Spirit.

I Corinthians 12:8-10, For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

v. 9, To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

v. 10, To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.

The nine gifts are divided into three groups: revelation, power, and inspiration.

A. Gifts of revelation

1) Word of wisdom

2) Word of knowledge

3) Discerning of spirits

B. Gifts of power (energy)

1) Working of miracles

2) Gift of faith

3) Gifts of healing

C. Gifts of inspiration

1) Gift of prophecy

2) Gift of speaking in tongues

3) Interpretation of tongues

15. THERE ARE ALSO NINE FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT A. These likewise reveal the perfection of three plus three plus three.

1) Love

2) Joy

3) Peace

4) Long suffering

5) Gentleness

6) Goodness

7) Faith

8) Meekness

9) Temperance

B. The fruit of the Spirit divides itself into three equal categories.

1) The first three: love, joy, and peace are a result of our relationship with God, and are directed toward Him.

2) The next three: long-suffering, gentleness, and goodness form our relationship with our fellow human beings. Jesus said, Love your neighbour as yourself.

3) The last three: faith, meekness, and temperance determine our relationship with ourselves. They are directed toward our inner man.

16. THERE ARE NINE MINISTRIES OF AND TO THE CHURCH A. I Corinthians 12:28, And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,

secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Ephesians 4:11, And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.

The nine ministries are:

1) Apostles

2) Prophets

3) Pastors

4) Evangelists

5) Teachers

6) Elders (or bishops)

7) Deacons

8) Helps

9) Governments

These are men and women given by Christ to minister to the Church.

B. There are three purposes.

Ephesians 4:12, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

1) The perfecting of the saints

2) The work of the ministry

3) The edifying of the body of Christ

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 5

AN ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN PERSONALITY

27

READING: Psalm 8:4-6, 9, What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him?

v. 5, For Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

v. 6, Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:

v. 9, O Lord our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth!

INTRODUCTION: For over 20 years I sought for clear-cut definitions of the spirit and soul of man. I read available materials on the subject but did not receive any answers to my questions. It was my habit when I met a minister of unusual knowledge in the Word of God, to ask:

What is the spirit of man? Give a concise definition.

What is the human soul? What are the boundaries of the mind, the heart, and the will?

I could not get satisfactory answers.

1. THE HUMAN PERSON IS NOT A DUALISM A. It was impossible for me to accept the human philosophy that man is only

breath and matter.

B. I could not believe the evaluation of psychology with its dualistic concepts that man is only two parts, that of mind and mud, inside and outside.

Page 29: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

28

C. I simply could not believe that death was the end for the human personality.

D. God brought me to some specific deductions that I wish to share with you.

2. THE PRESENT CHALLENGE A. The Christian world needs a clear understanding, to differentiate between what

is spirit and what is soul in the human personality.

B. It is of great significance and supreme importance for the spiritual health of the individual and the Church, to know the difference between soul and spirit. Otherwise how can the Church know what is spiritual and what is carnal?

C. In the unveiling of what is spirit and what is soul, we face the old and the new creations.

I Corinthians 15:22, For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

D. In the new life of the last Adam we learn the stratagems of spiritual warfare, how to battle successfully against the devil

Ephesians 6:10-18, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.

v. 11, Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

v. 12, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

v. 13, Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

v. 14, Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

v. 15, And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

v. 16, Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

v. 17, And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

v. 18, Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

3. REACHING SPIRITUAL REALITY A. I believe the vital message for believers in this hour is for the born-again

disciple to have a biblical comprehension of the difference between soul and spirit. Only through his spirit can man know spiritual reality.

B. It is impossible to have proper spiritual development and maturity without an understanding of the functions of soul and spirit. Until a Christian can differentiate between soul and spirit he will more than likely live in the soul (the lower life) and not in the spirit (the higher life).

C. It is impossible to constantly walk in the spirit unless you know what is spirit.

Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

By walking in God, love, holiness, a disciple of Christ does not walk in darkness, sin or rebellion against God.

The following graphs or charts will aid a beginning study in the search for a basic and fundamental understanding of man kind.

The soul is the captain and pilot of the ship; the spirit is the owner.

4. WHAT IS THE BIRTH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT? A. The birth of the spirit of man: (When a child is born into this world, its spirit is

dead.) John 3:3-7, Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto thee,

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

v. 4, Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

v. 5, Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

v. 6, That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

v. 7, Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again B. What is the answer to the conflict between spirit and soul?

Ezekiel 36:26-27, A new heart will I give unto you, and a new spirit will I put within you. . .and I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My commandments and do them.

How else can man fulfill God’s plan for his life? C. The birth of the spirit in our lives:

Romans 8:10, And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

D. The coming of His Spirit into our spirits:

Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.

E. God’s Spirit, like the dove from Noah’s ark, searches for a place to rest: Genesis 8:8-12, Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; v. 9, But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark. v. 10, And he stayed yet another seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;

Page 34: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

An Analysis of the Human Personality Lesson 5

33

v. 11, And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. v. 12, And he stayed yet another seven days; and sent for the dove; which returned not again unto him any more. The dove returned to the ark until there was the new creation. God also prepares a place in the Christian for Himself. It is a new creation, not the old.

5. SOULISH CHRISTIANS AS WORLDLY PEOPLE A. Worldly people are sinners and function only in body and soul. B. Soulish Christians have body, soul, and spirit; but the spirit is dormant so that

the Christian is motivated by his soulical parts rather than his spirit man.

6. SPIRITUAL CHRISTIANS A. They do not live in the soul, but by the human spirit. Their spirits are fused

with God’s Spirit. Instead of the Adamic soul controlling the spirit, the human spirit now controls the soul and body.

B. Man’s spirit can become one with God’s Spirit.

Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.

7. HOW DO WE GET FROM SOUL TO SPIRIT? The testimonies of two men will assist us: A. Watchman Nee: “We must know that he who can work for God is the one

whose man can be released. The basic difficulty of a servant of God lies in the failure of the inward man to break through the outward man.

“If we have never learned how to release our inward man by breaking through the outward man, we are not able to serve. Nothing can so hinder us as this outward man.

“Whether our works are fruitful or not, depends upon whether our outward man has been broken by the Lord so that the inward man can pass through the brokenness and come forth. This is the basic problem. The Lord wants to break our outward man in order that the inward man may have a way out. When the inward man is released, both believers and Christians will be blessed.”

Page 35: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

34

B. T. Austin Sparks: “What Is Man?” “What joy and strength there is when, the soul having been constrained to

yield to the spirit, the higher wisdom and glory is perceived in its vindication.

“So that unto fullness of joy the soul is essential, and it must be brought through the darkness and death of its own ability to learn the higher and deeper realities for the which the spirit is the first organ and faculty.”

8. THE PROBLEM Man was not supposed to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil for

the development of the soul, but from the Tree of Life for the development of the spirit

In the Old Testament, when the children of Israel wished to offer themselves in full sacrifice to the Lord, they did so by sacrificing a pigeon, dove, or lamb, to act as their substitute. The first thing their Aaronic high priest did was to take a sharp knife and cut it up.

Today, we don’t bring doves or pigeons or lambs, which were only types of real sacrifice. We bring ourselves in full surrender. But the procedure is similar, for our High Priest (not after the order of Aaron, but after the order of Melchizedek) takes a knife sharper than any Old Testament high priest had ever used, and divides between our spirit and soul.

Hebrews 4:12, The word of God is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The “joints and marrow” could well be referring to the effect of this operation upon our bodies.

9. SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY Man is made in the image and likeness of God tripartite: spirit, soul, and body.

A. His soul is also tripartite: 1) His will (the part of his mind that makes decisions), volitional 2) His mind (the part of his intellect that thinks), intellectual

3) His emotions (the part of him that feels), emotional Try as you might, you will not find a fourth component of the soul, any more than you can add to the Godhead, or add a fourth component to spirit, soul and body.

Page 36: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

An Analysis of the Human Personality Lesson 5

35

B. The spirit also can be divided into three components: 1) Intuition (knowing without thinking it through, as does the intellect) 2) Communion (fellowship with the Father, with His Son, and with the

Holy Spirit) 3) Conscience (bearing witness with the Spirit or grieving, quenching, or

resisting the Holy Spirit) (See Romans 9:1; Ephesians 4:30; I Thessalonians 5:19; Acts 7:51.)

10. HOW THEY FUNCTION A. Body and soul are subject to death because of sin. B. The spirit is a substance of God. God is the Father of spirits.

Hebrews 12:9, Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

C. The spirit, in the unregenerated human is dead, alienated from God, inactive, nonrelated, but not extinct.

D. The spirit once renewed is alive. It is clothed with soul and body which are mediums of expression for the spirit.

E. The natural soul is manifested and sustained in this life by body. A sick body can destroy the manifestations of the mind, emotions, and will.

F. The human spirit enters reality by the soul and body. The spirit exits the human through natural death or sin. The impartation of eternal life is through the engrafted seed of the living Christ.

1) James 1:21, Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

2) I Peter 1:23, Being born again, not corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. The incorruptible seed is the deathless vehicle for soul and body-- the spirit.

11. CONSCIENCE IS SPIRIT A. By it we know the laws of God. Then it dictates law to the soul, which

enforces it.

Page 37: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

An Analysis of the Human Personality Lesson 5

36

B. The modern world is void of pure conscience, but lives by soulish mental powers, or methods. The soul looks for numbers to count; the spirit seeks the fruit of the holiness, peace, and joy.

12. HEART AND SPIRIT A. What is a heart conversion? B. What is there in us that needs God?

There are three main words that describe the nature of man: spirit, soul, and body. God needs all of us.

C. Man through his body can contact the outward world. Through his physical senses, he is world-conscious.

D. Man through his soul is conscious of himself and able to know himself. Through his soul, he is self-conscious.

E. Man through the human spirit has the capacity to know God. Through his human spirit, he possesses the capacity to be God-conscious.

13. MAN’S THREE-FOLD EXPRESSION Our three-fold personality can be compared to a corporation. A. The plant: In the factory there may be a large assembly room where many

people work at producing the finished articles. This department would be the human body.

B. The office: There is also the business office where secretaries and various assistants work. It is a place where correspondence is answered, orders are made, decisions are carried out. This would answer to the human soul.

C. The president: Last of all, there is the inner office where the president of the firm resides. In this main office, all the major policies and decisions are made. The main office illustrates the functions of the human spirit. In the fallen man, however, the governing office has been taken from the spirit and transferred to the soul or the body.

When a man is unsaved, the heart of man is not identified with the inner spirit but with a man’s mind or body. The mind or body was never meant to rule the personality.

An artist once said, “Well, as far as I am concerned, art is my god.” He was knowingly transgressing the first commandment by that kind of attitude. His heart was in painting and drawing pictures. If that man’s artistic skill had been taken out of his life, it would, as we sometimes say, have taken the heart out of him.

Page 38: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

An Analysis of the Human Personality Lesson 5

37

While on board a ship sailing through the Inside Passage to Alaska, I once asked the captain, “What do you think of Christ? Whose son is He?” The captain said, “Those stars are my gods, sir. Since I was a small boy I have lived on the high seas, and night after night those wonderful stars have guided my boat. They have never led me astray. To me they are the most beautiful things in the world. I admire them deeply, and perhaps even worship them.” I asked him, “But, who made your sparkling gods up there? Who organized their functions to guarantee that they stay in their orbits and remain faithful to you?” “I do not know,” he said, “and am not sure that anyone else knows.” “Captain,” I said, “my God made your gods.”

When a person feels the claims of Christ to rule him and at the same time sets his heart on some sinful affection, his condition produces a divided heart. We discover this truth when we have to made a decision on spiritual issues. What is going to be the ruling center of our lives? A divided heart must choose who is going to rule.

The heart can be involved in an alien interest, affection, possessions, ambitions, or reputation. These can claim the heart and control the personality.

No matter what choice is made, the heart does not lose its moral contact with the conscience, which is part of the human spirit. Even when the heart is far from God, the spiritual capacity of conscience remains in man and makes itself known in a man’s thoughts and feelings.

We see the difference between the scriptural word for heart and spirit. These words are often used in the same verse in Scripture.

One example is:

Psalm 34:18, The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

There is a scriptural difference between the two words “heart” and “spirit.” Perhaps the main difference is the heart is always the ruling center of the personality. Everything about a man is related to his heart.

Proverbs 4:23, Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

The word “spirit” does not necessarily indicate a ruling disposition, but rather, the spiritual capacity every man has for God.

The spirit ought to be the ruling center of the personality. However, even when God does not rule in man’s spirit, the spiritual capacity still remains.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 6

THE UNITY AND IDENTITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

39

READING: I John 5:7, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

INTRODUCTION: The Bible teaches that man is made up of three mighty dimensions. Each is distinct and different. This human structure is unique. Man possesses a corporal body, a dominant self that is the soul, and a tremendous life force that is the spirit.

Why is man three parts and not two or four parts?

1. GOD MADE MAN A SPIRIT Man possesses a soul and a body, but God made man’s spirit to be the king of his

triune personality. The spirit of man must rule over his total personality, with the soul and body obedient to his spirit.

2. UNITY

A. The spirit, soul, and body of man can be symphonic and so harmonious that it is impossible to know where one ends and the other begins.

B. For example, in worship:

1) The spirit can adore God like the angels before the throne.

2) At that precise moment soulically, the mind can be thinking of the beauties of heaven, the emotions can be in a state of ecstasy, and the will can be in divine submission and perfect rhythm, harmonizing the spirit and soul.

Page 41: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Unity and Identity of the Human Person Lesson 6

40

3) The human body can form the expression of worship with the lifting of the head and hands, the eyes having the light of heaven, and the lips singing praise. In this way, the total human personality is involved in worship.

C. This is the perfect man. This is unity, yet identity.

3. GOD IS A TRIUNITY A. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit counseling in the majestic Throne

Room of Heaven decided to make man in their own image:

Genesis 1:26, And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

B. I John 5:7, For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one.

C. Matthew 3:17, And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Here we see the Trinity in divine action: Christ was baptized, the Father spoke, and the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove.

4. THE DIVINE TRINITY MADE MAN TRIUNE I Thessalonians 5:23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray

your spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

5. MAN IN A TRINITY A. Hebrews 4:12-13, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper

than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. v. 13, Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

B. The personality of man is so closely knit that it takes the all-powerful Word of God to even divide the soul from the spirit. This is true in action and definition.

C. Philosophy and psychology do not have the answers to the reality of the soul and spirit.

Page 42: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Unity and Identity of the Human Person Lesson 6

41

6. THE BODY A. Almighty God fashioned a human body from the clay of the earth. It is made

of earth and will never leave this earth.

Genesis 2:7, And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

There is a close kinship between man and his environment. His outer shell is like the area in which he lives.

B. The body is easy to classify and identify. The five senses with which it relates to the world are: seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting and hearing.

C. The earthly part of man was created to be a slave to the immortal part of man in his spirit. If the inward man is evil, the carnal, clay man will manifest this evil.

D. If the inner man is spiritual, the physical man demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit.

7. THE SOUL A. Inside man’s shell, or clay house, God placed a soul. This part of man is his

real self and has a close relationship with his outer shell, or body. This soul is made up of three tremendous areas:

1) Intellect--man thinks 2) Emotions--man feels 3) Will power--man decides

B. God joined the body and soul together with His breath. God created these first two areas to be subservient to the third area. Man’s body and soul can be good or bad in relationship to the third area.

8. THE SPIRIT A. Inside the clay house, behind his soul, or his thoughts, emotions, and will,

God placed man’s spirit. This spirit is as distinct from the other two areas of man as darkness is from light. God gave man’s spirit the propensity toward communion with Deity. In this area he would be able to communicate with the divine world. God gave man, in his spirit, the structure of intuition and the power of conscience. By this, man would know what was right and what was wrong; what was good or bad, spiritually and morally.

Page 43: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Unity and Identity of the Human Person Lesson 6

42

B. There was a perfect blend and harmonization of the three distinct elements of spirit, soul and body in creating the human and his personality.

This is what we mean when we say man is made up of three parts which should function as one whole. Thus, man was created a triunity.

9. THE PERFECT MAN A. With his body, he walks, eats, sees, hears, and feels with his five God-given

senses. This is the part of man that we see. B. With his soul, the man Adam possessed the power to name all of the animals

of the earth. He had the intellect to operate in the Garden of Eden as its overseer. He possessed emotions to admire the sunrise and sunset, to feel affection toward his wife, Eve. He had the will power to choose what he would do as he walked in the Garden as its king.

C. With his spirit, man walked with God in the evening and conversed with Him. With his spirit, he understood his limitations such as the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

10. KING-SERVANT-SLAVE A. God made man’s spirit to be the king of his triunity. B. God made man’s soul to be the servant, to serve and obey the spirit. C. God made the body to be slave to the wishes of the spirit. He had perfect

fellowship with God, with his environment and with himself. He was well-adjusted. He was supremely happy.

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE SPIRIT

43

READING: Hebrews 4:12-13, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

v. 13, Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

INTRODUCTION: A. The Word of God is alive. The Bible is not like other literature. The Bible feels.

The Bible understands. The Bible feeds the soul and spirit. The Bible guides. It is a living book.

B. The Word of God is alive. Life is the nature of the Word. Operative is the action of the Word. God says it will never return void. It prevails.

C. The Word of God penetrates. It is sharper than a sword with two edges. It pierces deep into the consciousness of man. No literature on the face of the earth penetrates man as the Bible does.

D. The Bible divides. It divides the soul from the spirit. It divides the joints from the marrow. To separate joints means to cut across or separate. To divide marrow means to crack the bones, to get on the inside to the marrow of the bone.

In our inner man of soul and spirit, God is able to separate, crack to the interior and to find the innermost recesses of man.

Only God’s Word can know what is soul and what is spirit, and divide them.

E. God’s Word is revelation. It is a discerner of thoughts. Thoughts are deliberate. It reveals the intents of the heart. Intents are motives. God’s Word understands or discerns what we think, as well as what motivates that thinking.

Page 45: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

44

F. How does the Word divide? By revealing what is soulish and what is spiritual. Every creature is manifest.

Revelation helps us to see what God sees in a person.

It is so difficult to determine the natural from the supernatural, the outward from the inward.

When the spirit goes forth, the soul goes also. They are mixed. The first requirement is not power, but purity.

God divides the soul from the spirit. A soul will destroy what the spirit builds. Soul power is mixed power. God’s power is singular power. The soul must be broken before the spirit can be released in a person.

The spirit is big in you!

Adam was the fullest expression of the human spirit. When Adam rebelled and disobeyed God, his spirit died. When his actions and thoughts, now controlled by his soul and body, were each out of relationship with God, then Satan controlled his personality. That which perished in Adam was resurrected in the new birth through Christ.

1. WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF MAN? A. There are four definitions of “life” from the Greek.

1) Bios--the lowest form of animal life

2) Psuche--the soulish area: beauty, art, music, etc.

3) Zoe--spiritual life, Christ life, eternal life

I John 5:11-12, And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life (zoe), and this life is in His Son.

v. 12, He that hath the Son, hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

4) Anastrophe--a confused manner of behavior (used only once)

B. Zoe is Christ life.

1) The divine nature is man’s spirit. The spirit of man is his born-again nature. John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This is the fusing of man’s spirit with God’s Spirit.

Page 46: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

45

2) Man’s spirit becomes quickened and revived.

Ephesians 2:1, And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.

The anointing happens when God’s Spirit possesses the human spirit.

3) Man’s spirit is renewed.

Ephesians 4:23, And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

It is made over again in the inner man.

4) Man receives a new spirit.

Ezekiel 18:31, Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

A spirit responds to God’s Spirit in sameness of love and fellowship.

C. We must never know people after the flesh.

1) Not physically

a) “Fatso”

b) “Slim Jim”

c) “Crip,” for handicapped people

d) “Shorty”

2) Not soulically

a) “Dummy”

b) Chinese servants called the missionaries they worked for “tiger” or “wild cat.”

3) Remember, there is no description of the body of Jesus in the Bible. Nor is there a description of His soulical parts; that is: His mind, His emotions, or His will. It is always a description of His Spirit.

4) Ishmael was a son born after the flesh.

Galatians 4:23, But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

He was always a thorn to Abraham.

Page 47: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

46

5) We do not war after the flesh.

II Corinthians 10:3, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh.

D. God renames with a new name those who are born-again.

1) Jacob became Israel.

2) Simon became Peter.

3) Joses became Barnabas, the Son of Consolation.

2. THE HUMAN SPIRIT AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD What happens to man’s spirit after he is born again?

Romans 14:17, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Luke 17:21, Neither shall they say, Lo here! or lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

A. Righteousness--You become righteous, attain the essence of righteousness.

B. Peace--You become peaceful. It passes all understanding.

Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which passeth all under-standing, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

C. Joy--You become joyous and spontaneous like a well issuing living water.

Isaiah 12:3, Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

I Peter 1:8, Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

3. THE HUMAN PERSONALITY AND THE DWELLING PLACE OF GOD

The human personality becomes the dwelling place of God. Man has only his spirit to deal with in the great issues of life, with its problems and sorrows. The redeemed human person has a spirit even though it might need renewing.

A. Job 32:8, But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

B. Zechariah 12:1, The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

Page 48: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

47

C. Proverbs 20:27, The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

D. James 2:26, For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

E. II Corinthians 5:16, Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more.

4. REVELATION We use our spirit to:

A. Receive divine revelation

Jesus told Peter in Matthew 16:17, . . .for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee. . .

B. Discern or realize ourselves

5. CONSCIENCE The dictionary says that conscience is an inner knowledge of right and wrong or a

moral judgment that leads to feelings of guilt when violated.

Romans 8:16, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

A. Conscience gives direction by receiving the Word and dictating the will to act on it. It determines right and wrong, not by power or reason, but spiritually.

B. The conscience is the seat of faith.

Hebrews 9:14, How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

I Timothy 1:5, Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.

I Timothy 1:18-19, This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare.

v.19, Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.

Page 49: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

48

6. WORSHIP Ephesians 5:19, Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

I Timothy 3:9, Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. When God’s Word takes root in the conscience, it produces faith.

7. INTUITION Have you ever picked up the telephone to call a friend, only to find he was ready

to call you? Sometimes their phone rings busy; they are already dialing your number.

I Corinthians 2:11, For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

A. Knowing, not guessing--realizing it yourself

B. Knowing, not learning--knowledge without reason

C. Who knoweth the Spirit of Christ?

D. To understand God’s Word

E. To discern spiritual climate

F. to receive revelation from God

G. For example: a man in Alaska knew when his brother died in Russia.

8. THE DIVINE EXPRESSIONS OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN A. We send forth God’s Spirit to others by our spirit.

B. Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

v.23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

C. The gifts of the Spirit from the Holy Spirit reside within us.

Page 50: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

49

9. THE VITAL ACTIVITIES OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT The Spirit can have fellowship with God through prayer, song, and praise.

A. Man’s body contacts and has fellowship with earth. B. Man’s soul contacts and has fellowship with his fellow man. 1) I John 1:7, But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have

fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.

2) John 4:23, But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.

3) I Corinthians 14:15-16, What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. v.16, Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the learned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

C. Man’s spirit contacts and has fellowship with God. 1) I Corinthians 6:17, But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 2) I John 4:1, Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits

whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

3) Jesus served; He washed the feet of His disciples. How can we increase our life in the spirit? We can do this only by imitating Jesus.

10. THE WORKS OF THE SPIRIT A. To rule and govern the soul and the body B. To identify the movements of the spirit, we need the soul and the body

The spirit utilizes the soul and body for its expression. C. To gain victory over fears, unbelief, demons, etc. D. To reign in heavenly places E. Your spirit can keep growing. When the spirit and soul are right, they

demand consecration from the body.

F. Soulical activities reveal the born-again spirit.

Page 51: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Spirit Lesson 7

50

G. In order to deny oneself (the soul), the spirit needs the mind, but it must be a renewed mind (part of the soul). In a double-minded man, his spirit and soul are not united.

H. Your spirit can keep learning all your life. It can become holier. God’s Spirit in you always remains the same.

11. HOW TO DISCERN YOUR SPIRIT A. How can we know when our information is from the spirit and not from

the soul? What is our source of information?

1) The spoken word reveals the spirit of a person.

2) What you desire to read reveals your spirit.

3) Your choice of companions reveals your spirit.

4) Your choice of worship reveals your spirit.

B. Meekness and stubbornness in the same person reveal that his soul and spirit are in deadly conflict within him. The soul must be conquered before the spirit is free.

12. HOW DO WE LIVE BY THE SPIRIT? A. There is a battle of the spirit for spiritual growth.

B. Some people are born again, yet permit themselves to continue to develop after their Adamic nature. Seeking experience, knowledge, and position can be soulical.

C. Born-again people should follow the spiritual direction of the inward man, of intuition and spiritual growth, by uninterrupted communion with God.

D. Spiritual bankruptcy is to have accumulated facts and information, but to possess no communion or power with God--naturalism and humanism

E. We must battle against the unregenerate soul through the born-again spirit.

13. HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN OUR INFORMATION IS SPIRITUAL AND NOT SOULICAL? WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL INFORMATION?

A. Only spirit can worship spirit. B. Only spirit can know and understand spirit. C. Only spirit can be directed by spirit. D. Only spirit can walk with spirit.

Page 52: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

51

E. Only spirit can serve spirit.

F. Only spirit can receive revelation from the Spirit.

14. CONCLUSION We live by the spirit through:

A. Prayer (communion)

B. Praise (rejoicing)

C. Songs (joy)

D. Reading the Word of God

DIVIDING FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AND WORKS OF THE FLESH

53

READING: A. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any

two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

B. Galatians 5:16-25, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

v. 17, For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

v. 18, But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

v. 19, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

v. 20, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

v. 21, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

v. 22, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

v. 23, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

v. 24, And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

v. 25, If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

54

C. II Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

D. Romans 8:13, For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

1. THE WORKS OF THE FLESH A. Body

1) Adultery--sexual intercourse between persons who are married but not married to each other

2) Fornication--sexual intercourse when unmarried

3) Uncleanness--immorality

4) Lasciviousness--wanton lust; exciting lust

5) Murder

6) Drunkenness

7) Revelings--boisterous festivity

B. Spirit

1) Idolatry--worship of demon spirits

2) Witchcraft--superstition, demonic

C. Soul

1) Hatred

2) Strife

3) Seditions--stirring up of rebellion

4) Envyings--ill will towards another

5) Heresies--religious beliefs opposite of orthodox beliefs

These shall not inherit the kingdom. It is one or the other. When a person is born again, there is a change

Galatians 3:22, But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Page 56: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

2. THE NINE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT A. Love

B. Joy--even in sadness

C. Peace

D. Longsuffering--the ability to stand unmoved

E. Gentleness

F. Goodness--doing good deeds

H. Meekness--not highly opinionated about oneself

I. Temperance--in control of one’s temper and self

3. YOUR SPIRIT AND THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT A. The Holy Spirit must have a receptacle in which to place His gifts.

B. They are not for the body. The body cannot make contact with the Holy Spirit.

C. They are not for the soul. The soul includes the mind, and the gifts have no relationship with mental abilities. They are supernatural manifestations.

D. The spirit of man becomes the container or receptacle of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I Corinthians 12:8-10, For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

v. 9, To another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

V. 10, To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

E. It is the fusion of man’s spirit with God’s Spirit that makes man’s spirit the dwelling place of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

It is the human spirit in union with the third person of the Divine Trinity.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 9

THE DEATH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT

57

READING: Genesis 2:17, But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

INTRODUCTION: In the Garden of Eden man lived in perfect harmony with himself, his environment, and his Maker. His total personality was in unison with the universe.

His body was in unison with the earth from which it came.

His soul was in unison with his spirit that directed him

His spirit was in unison with God who created the total man.

1. THE DECEIVER AND TEMPTER A. Into this garden of harmony and happiness walked Lucifer, the fallen

archangel.

B. His greatest desire was to destroy man’s relationship with God. He tempted the woman first.

C. God had wished this idyllic Eden would last forever and had set regulations for its continuance.

Page 59: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Death of the Human Spirit Lesson 9

58

2. SATAN APPEALED TO EVE THROUGH THE THREE FACTORS OF HER BEING

A. Genesis 3:1, Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden. This was Satan’s appeal to the body of Eve, her appetite.

B. Genesis 3:4, And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. This was an appeal to the soul of Eve, her reason, thinking, and will power.

C. Genesis 3:5, For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. This was Satan’s appeal to her spirit, her conscience or intuition, her relationship with God.

3. EVE RESPONDED TO SATAN BY BODY, SOUL, AND SPIRIT A. Genesis 3:6, And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food

The physical part of Eve, her appetite, surrendered to Satan. B. Genesis 3:6, . . .that it was pleasant to the eyes. . .

The eyes are windows to the soul. Her mind had reasoned the matter. Her emotions had accepted it. Her will made her determined to eat.

C. Genesis 3:6, . . .and a tree to be desired to make one wise. . . This was a strike at her spirit to compete with God. We can see that Eve fell in three ways; through her spirit, soul, and body.

4. THE CONUNDRUM OF ADAM A. I Timothy 2:14, And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived

was in the transgression.

B. Genesis 3:6, . . . And (Eve) did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

C. If Adam was not deceived, why did he eat the fruit? Adam saw the dramatic change which took place in Eve. She lost her relationship with God, her spirit was dead. Adam could see it in Eve’s eyes, in her total being. Her soulish part changed and this was discernible to him. She was telling him that he was naked and she was naked. Adam saw that in order to live with Eve, whom God had made for him, he must transgress. Therefore, he deliberately rebelled against God and against his spirit by eating the fruit that Eve handed to him.

Page 60: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Death of the Human Spirit Lesson 9

59

D. The amazing love that Adam had for Eve made him willing to lose friendship with God. No doubt God would have created another helpmate for him if he had remained true to his Creator.

5. WHAT DIED ON THE DAY ADAM SINNED? A. Adam first lived by the breath of life that God had breathed into him. It was

divine spirit. By this spirit he communed with God. B. When Adam transgressed his spirit died, and his communion with God

ceased. C. Science declares that “death is a cessation of communication with the

environment.” After his fall, Adam’s spirit became as a vegetable to his soul and body. This is true of all sinners. Human nature is actually soulical nature.

D. This is why the Word of God says the soul and spirit must be divided or separated. God never intended that they should be one.

E. Man, in his away-from-God state, can give whatever spirit is left within him to evil such as sorcery, fortune telling, and communication with the devil. This is the spirit of man misused by evil. It becomes a possessed spirit.

F. Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. Their spirits had died at transgression and their souls became the master of their lives.

G. The independent action of Adam and Eve terminated the kingship of the spirit over the soul; the spirit surrendered its power to the soul.

CONCLUSION: When a sinner comes to Christ and is born again, the human spirit is reinstated as king. The soul is mastered, ruled, and governed by the spirit. The soul and body initiate action under the divine direction of the spirit of man.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 10

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE HUMAN SOUL

61

READING: I Corinthians 2:10-14, But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

v. 11, For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

v. 12, Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

v. 13, Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

v. 14, But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1. THE HUMAN SELF A. The human soul is the human self or personality.

B. The human soul is the total old creation, the old Adam.

C. The Greek word psuche is the English word “soul.” From this word are derived “psychology,” “psychiatry,” “psychoanalysis,” etc.

D. The first Adam became a living soul.

E. Soulical life is the life a human receives at birth. It is man’s self-awareness.

Page 63: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Chemistry of the Human Soul Lesson 10

62

2. THE SOUL HAS THREE DOMINANT FUNCTIONS A. It thinks.

B. It feels.

C. It decides.

3. THE SENSES OF THE SOUL A. Intellect--which has to do with man’s mind, thoughts, wisdom, and

foolishness

B. Emotions--his moods, desires, ideals, loves, likes, dislikes, hates, sadnesses, and joys; the total feelings of mankind

C. Volition--man’s willpower; the exercise of his will as in making a deliberate decision or choice

4. THE SOUL IS THE CENTER OF THE HUMAN PERSONALITY The soul is the carnal part of man’s individuality. It reveals his intellect, emotions,

and willpower in his natural--Adamic state.

5. THE DIVINE POSITION OF THE SOUL A. The soul must be the servant of the spirit. All independent actions that have to

do with thought, emotions, and decision must surrender to the spirit of man. All rebellious actions must be terminated.

B. The soul must not be the source of motivation. It must be the servant of motivation.

C. Human emotions, feelings, cleverness, or decisions will never be able to solve the deepest needs of man because they are soulical.

D. The soul of man is seductive and deceptive because of self-interest and carnal gratification. Therefore, the soul must be mastered, ruled, and governed by the spirit of man.

E. God desires that only the spirit of man should decide the destiny of man.

F. What we call our “human nature” is a function of the soul. This is what we struggle against spiritually.

G. A naturally gentle person is only gentle when he is pleased, or his will is gratified. Force that human nature and it will react, showing its soulish nature.

H. The power and abilities of the soul of man should not be destroyed, but directed by the spirit of man.

Page 64: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

I. We need to know that the soul is the servant and must not rule. It is a useful servant, but a destructive master.

6. WORKS OF THE SOUL A. Man’s soulish forces created the Tower of Babel which resulted in the chaos

of over 3,000 confusing and conflicting tongues. Until this day, these languages are barriers to the operation of the Spirit.

B. On the other hand, it was man’s spirit that directed the building of Noah’s ark. It became a means of world salvation. It saved mankind, the animal kingdom, and preserved posterity.

C. King Saul 1) He began in the spirit; he lived and walked by his spirit. He had a new

heart. He prophesied. I Samuel 10:6-10, And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. v. 7, And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee. v. 8, And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do. v. 9, And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. v. 10, And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a com-pany of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

2) But King Saul changed in order to live soulically. I Samuel 13:13-14, And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which He commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. v. 14, But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought Him a man after His own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over His people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

3) His eyes saw wealth, gold, and silver. His pride (soul) kept King Agag alive.

I Samuel 15:23, For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, He hath also rejected thee from being king.

7. THE SOUL IN CONFLICT The human mind

1) It is a department of the soul.

2) It is one of the most important parts of the human personality.

3) It is called a reprobate mind.

Romans 1:28, And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.

4) The mind is carnal and not subject to the law of God.

Romans 8:7, Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

5) Ephesians 4:17, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind.

6) Colossians 2:18, Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.

7) Psalm 94:11, The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

8) Proverbs 15:26, The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

8. WHAT IS THE HEART OF MAN? A. It is an organ, part of the soul. Like other organs of the body, death occurs

when it does not function: the kidneys, liver, lungs, etc.

B. Proverbs 23:7, For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

C. Evil heart

1) Jeremiah 4:14, O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

Page 66: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

65

2) Matthew 9:4, And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

3) Matthew 15:19, For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

4) Genesis 6:5, And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

D. Good heart

When the heart is under the direction of the spirit, it is holy, joyful, and peaceful.

1) Ezekiel 18:31, Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel.

2) Psalm 84:2, My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

3) Job 23:16, For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me.

4) Acts 4:32, And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

5) Colossians 3:22, Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.

6) Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

9. WHAT IS THE BLOOD? A. The blood is the life-fluid of the soul and body of man.

Leviticus 17:11, For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

B. Mind--the brain must have a flow of blood to live.

C. Emotions--the heart is pumped with blood.

D. Will

1) In a sinner, the will is stubborn.

2) In believers, the will is Christ-like. Jesus said, Thy will be done.

THE DIVIDING OF THE SOUL AND SPIRIT

67

READING: A. Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any

two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

B. I Thessalonians 5:23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1. THE DIVIDING PROCESS A. The spiritual man and the natural man can only be divided by the sword of the

Spirit, or the Word of God.

B. Philosophy cannot divide the spirit from the soul.

C. Science cannot divide the spirit from the soul.

D. Jesus called His body a temple.

John 2:18-21, Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

v. 19, Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

v. 20, Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

v. 21, But he spake of the temple of his body.

68

E. The Church is the temple of God.

Ephesians 2:19-22, Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

v. 20, And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone;

v. 21, In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

v. 22, In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

2. SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY--DIVIDED IN HEBREW WORSHIP A. The Tabernacle of the Lord

I Corinthians 3:16, Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

Hebrews 9:23-26, It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

v. 24, For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

v. 25, Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

v. 26, For then must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

B. The book of Hebrews has over 90 verses about the tabernacle of the Lord.

C. The tabernacle had three components that portray the three parts of man. Our text says that man is the temple of God in this dispensation.

D. The surrender of soul to spirit

1) The Holy of Holies is the spirit. This is the place where the Shekinah Glory of God rested.

2) The Inner Court, or Holy Place, is the soul. It is an area of threefold activity: altar, table of shewbread, and lampstand. The altar is the mind, the lamp represents the emotions, and the table is the will.

3) The Outer Court is the body. The entire populace could visit there.

3. THREE ENTRANCES TO THE TABERNACLE A. The gate of the Outer Court

Exodus 27:16-19, And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.

v. 17, All the pillars round about the court shall be filleted with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass.

v. 18, The length of the court shall be an hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty every where, and the height five cubits of fine twined linen, and their sockets of brass.

Page 71: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Dividing of the Soul and Spirit Lesson 11

70

v. 19, All the vessels of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins thereof, and all the pins of the court, shall be of brass.

All Israel could use the gate into the Outer Court. The human body is open to extraneous experiences.

B. The door to the Holy Place

Exodus 26:36-37, And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework.

v. 37, And thou shalt make for the hanging five pillars of Shittim wood, overlay them with gold, and their hooks shall be of gold: and thou shalt cast five sockets of brass for them.

Only the priests could use the doors into the Holy Place. The soul limits those who attend it.

C. The veil to the Holy of Holies

Exodus 26:31-33, And thou shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

v. 32, And thou shall hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver.

v. 33, And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the Holy Place and the Most Holy.

Only the High Priest could pass through the veil to the Holy of Holies. Only God can minister to the spirit.

4. THREE KINDS OF LIGHT IN THE TABERNACLE A. The sun lit the Outer Court; the body is open to the elements.

B. The Holy Place was lit by the lampstand; the soul is lit with the mind, emotions, and will.

C. The Holy of Holies was lit by the Shekinah presence of God; the spirit of man is enlightened by the Spirit of God.

5. WHY DIVIDING OF SOUL AND SPIRIT IS NECESSARY A. The division of soul and spirit is necessary in order for God to live and work

through us unrestricted. In sinners, only their soul functions. For example, the Bible is understood either by our spirit or soul. If we meet the Lord in His Word, it must be by the Holy Spirit. Only the Spirit can give a correct understanding of God’s Word.

Page 72: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Dividing of the Soul and Spirit Lesson 11

71

B. The life of the spirit is only dominant after the soul life is conquered. (Romans 7:8)

C. When your spirit touches God’s Spirit, God’s Spirit gives life to your spirit. You become a renewed spirit.

D. Religion is either spirit or soul. A soulical religion does not change a person’s nature.

E. The soul, with its desires, wishes, and ambitions, fell with Adam in the Garden of Eden. It became contrary to God and the human spirit.

The body fell in the Garden and death came to the body. The body is a servant to the soul, and the soul must be the servant of the spirit.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 12

COMMUNICATION OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN

73

READING: Romans 8:14, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

INTRODUCTION: Paul served God with his spirit.

Romans 1:9, For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.

1. GOD’S SPIRIT GUIDES MAN’S SPIRIT Man discovered this his first day of existence in the Garden of Eden. God walked

with him in the Garden.

Genesis 3:8, And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

2. ONLY BY AND THROUGH OUR SPIRIT CAN GOD’S PRESENCE BE MANIFESTED IN US

Romans 8:16, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

3. ONLY THE SPIRIT OF MAN CAN POSSESS THE NATURE OF GOD

Romans 8:15, For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Page 75: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

Communication of the Spirit of Man Lesson 12

74

4. ONENESS OF SPIRIT REQUIRES SAMENESS OF NATURE, ATTITUDE, OR INTEREST TO DIVINE COMMUNICATION

Ephesians 4:3-6, Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

v. 4, There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

v. 5, One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

v. 6, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

5. THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS THE ENGINEER OF THE HUMAN PERSONALITY

Romans 8:5-6, For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

v. 6, For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

6. THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS THE CONDUCTOR OF THE SOUL A. He knows what is best for his destiny.

Acts 10:19-20, While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

v. 20, Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

B. He feels with spiritual emotions.

Colossians 2:5, For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

C. He decides by communication with God.

Acts 11:12, And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house.

Page 76: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

Communication of the Spirit of Man Lesson 12

75

7. THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS THE KING OF THE BODY The five senses must be in divine subjection to the inner man. The human spirit

communicates this information from the inner man through the soulical avenues of mind and emotions.

Ephesians 4:23-24, And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

v. 24, And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

8. BROKEN COMMUNICATION AMONG THE SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY OF MAN

When communication among the spirit, soul, and body of a man breaks down, he returns to the place where Adam was when he rebelled in the Garden of Eden. He loses communication with God.

Genesis 3:8, 24, And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

v. 24, So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

He returns to the point in life where Samson was when his spiritual life was abandoned to the lusts of the flesh and the pride of life. Samson broke his Nazarite vow and lost his communication with God.

Judges 16:20, And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

9. EVERY BORN-AGAIN PERSON MUST STAY TUNED INTO GOD Only through man’s spirit can he communicate with God for information,

guidance, and fellowship.

Romans 8:14, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:4, That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

READING: A. Romans 14:17, For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness,

and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. B. Ephesians 1:1-2, Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints

which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: v. 2, Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

C. John 3:1-7, There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: v. 2, The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. v. 3, Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. v. 4, Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? v. 5, Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. v. 6, That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. v. 7, Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

The Regenerated Spirit Lesson 13

78

INTRODUCTION: At the beginning of our spiritual life, our spirit receives God’s own life. Spiritual life is not born of culture or religion. Christ described it to Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again.” He was an old man. His mother had already died when Jesus said, “You must be born again.” What did He mean? Christ did not talk foolishness or absurdities. What was He teaching Nicodemus? He was not referring to Nicodemus’ soul. His mind was alert, his emotions were strong, and his will was determined. He certainly was not referring to his body. Therefore, Jesus must have been referring to Nicodemus’ spirit. His spirit needed to be revived and renewed. His inner man needed a relationship with God. He had to be born again. Then he would acknowledge that Jesus Christ was the Messiah.

1. MY SON WAS DEAD Our Lord further demonstrated this truth in Luke 15, where He gave us the tremendous

story of the prodigal son. The prodigal asked for his portion of the family inheritance and wandered far from home. He wasted his money and ended in a pigsty. In this awful condition he decided to return to his father’s house. Upon his arrival, the father proclaimed, For this my son was dead, and is alive. . . Just what did the father mean? He certainly did not mean his son had been physically dead, because there he stood, the same son. He could not have spoken of the soul. It was the soul’s desires that had caused this young man to wander. With his mind and emotions he decided to leave home and live a riotous life which ended in a pigpen. With his willpower, he refused to follow the instructions of his father. Just what was dead and what was born again? The spirit of this young man was dead. He had lost communion with God. He had lost fellowship with his father. He had lost his powers of revelation in knowing the activities of the father. Upon his arrival home, his spirit came alive and he again, had communion with his father. He had fellowship with his father. He now had revelation of everything the father wished him to know. The prodigal son was new because of his new relationship with his father.

2. THE EXPLORATION OF INNER SPACE A. Man’s greatest exploration is not to the moon, but within himself.

B. The true life of man begins with the spirit of man.

Romans 8:16, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

John 6:63, It is the spirit that quickeneth. . .

Page 80: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Regenerated Spirit Lesson 13

79

C. When God’s Spirit unites with the human spirit, children of God are born.

I Corinthians 15:45 says, . . .the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. We are born-again believers. We are not joined to the first Adam, but united to the last Adam and made quickening spirits.

Our corporal body is world-conscious and earth-conscious.

Our spiritual body is God-conscious. It is where God dwells. It is the regenerated spirit.

THE SPIRIT IN CONTROVERSY WITH THE SOUL

81

READING: A. Romans 6:7-8, For he that is dead is freed from sin.

v. 8, Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him.

B. Romans 7:22-23, For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

v. 23, But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

INTRODUCTION: Man’s soul, in its unregenerate state, rebels against his spirit.

By controversy between spirit and soul, we mean seeing such things as resentment, hatred, self-pity, self-defeat, inferiority, and condemnation being changed by God’s power into love, self-expressing victory, and superiority.

The human mind in its original state delights in the logical and psychological.

1. ENOCH Adam told Enoch he could never walk with or see God or know His power. They

lived together for 300 years.

Enoch was translated at 365 years, but Enoch won.

The Spirit in Controversy With the Soul Lesson 14

2. ABRAHAM The soul wars against the spirit.

Genesis 17:15-19, And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. v. 16, And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. v. 17, Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? v. 18, And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before Thee! v. 19, And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

A. God said, I will give thee a son through Sarah. B. Abraham’s mind said, “Why not use Hagar?’’ Hagar means “locust”

(devourer). This produced an eternal controversy. Our modern world still suffers as the result of Ishmael against Isaac. Genesis 12:4, So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Genesis 16:1, Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. Hagar was not destined to produce the seed of promise and covenant. Galatians 4:23-24, But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. v. 24, Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the Mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. Galatians 4:29, But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

C. Abraham’s faith

Genesis 15:6, And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.

3. JOSEPH FORGIVES Genesis 45:3-8, And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet

live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. v. 4, And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. v. 5, Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. v. 6, For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. v. 7, And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. v. 8, So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and He hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and the lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

A. His soul said, “Remember your brothers’ hatred.’’

B. His soul said, “Remember how you were persecuted in Egypt.’’

C. His spirit said, “God meant it for good.’’

4. CHILDREN OF ISRAEL BEFORE THE PROMISED LAND Numbers 13:2, 25, 27-28, 30-33, Send thou men, that they may search the land of

Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

v. 25, And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

v. 27, And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

v. 28, Nevertheless, the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and more over we saw the children of Anak there.

v. 30, And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

v. 31, But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

v. 32, And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

v. 33, And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

A. The bodies of the men were shaken.

B. Their souls were fearful in their imagination.

C. The spirit of Caleb was ready for victory.

5. DAVID AND GOLIATH: THE SPIRIT WINS (I Samuel 17:31-50.)

A. The soul said, “The giant is big, his sword and spear are strong.

B. His spirit said, “God will deliver him into my hand.’’

6. THE WATERS DIVIDED: ELISHA HAD A CONTROVERSY (II Kings 2)

A. His mind said, “It is impossible to open up the Jordan River.’’

B. His body said, “Why not just swim across the Jordan?’’

C. His spirit said, “Believe God for a miracle.’’

The spirit won.

7. THE IRON SWIMS: ELISHA II Kings 6:1-7, And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the

place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

v. 2, Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

v. 3, And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.

v. 4, So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.

v. 5, But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master for it was borrowed.

v. 6, And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

v. 7, Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

A. The axe head was lost deep in the Jordan River’s mud.

B. The mind or soul said it was impossible to retrieve; the spirit said it could be found.

C. Elisha believed the spirit. The axe head began to swim. The battle of the spirit was won.

8. LAZARUS RAISED FROM THE DEAD John 11:38-44, Jesus therefore again groaning in Himself cometh to the grave. It

was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

v. 39, Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

v. 40, Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

v. 41, Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that Thou hast heard Me.

v. 42, And I knew that Thou heardest Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.

v. 43, And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

v. 44, And He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and His face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

9. PETER CATCHES A HAUL John 21:6, And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye

shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

A. Jesus said to Peter, “Cast your net on the right side.”

B. Peter’s mind said, “No . . . I have done that already.’’

C. His lifelong experiences said, “I know more about fishing than Jesus does.’’

D. His body, weary and tired, said, “No!”

Page 88: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

E. His emotions said, “I am discouraged.’’

F. His spirit said, “Yes!”

10. SPIRIT MUST ACT AS KING--EXERTING KINGSHIP A. Fasting:

1) Weakens the body

2) Weakens the soul

3) Strengthens the spirit

B. Praying:

1) Weakens the body

2) Weakens the soul

3) Strengthens the spirit

CONCLUSION: A. The mind will accept a theory and refuse the practice.

B. The spirit must command the action.

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 15

THE HUMAN SPIRIT IN CONTROVERSY WITH

THE HUMAN BODY

89

READING: A. I Corinthians 6:15, Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall

I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.

B. I Corinthians 9:27, But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

INTRODUCTION: The human body is important.

1. THE HUMAN BODY, THE TEMPLE OF THE LIVING GOD I Corinthians 6:19, What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy

Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

A. The human body, directed by its five senses, is a dwelling place of deity. God wants and desires to possess the human body and to use all of its faculties.

B. However, the human body, rather than being a temple of God, can become a house of the devil. Demon entities desire to possess the human body. Demon spirits have few manifestations other than in human bodies. These evil spirits contort, make sick, and destroy the human body.

Page 91: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

2. THE APOSTLE JAMES SAID: James 3:2, For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the

same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

The body has a bridle. This is the same as putting a bit in a horse’s mouth to guide him. If the spirit of man does not bridle the human body, it will wander into sin.

3. THE APOSTLE PAUL SAID: Romans 6:13, Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness

unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

4. THE BIBLE FURTHER SAYS: Romans 6:12, Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey

it in the lusts thereof.

5. THE APOSTLE PAUL SAYS MAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS BODY

Romans 6:16, Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

It is an indisputable fact that the source to which we yield our bodies becomes the master of our destiny.

6. THE HUMAN BODY AND THE LAST DAYS It was Jesus who prophesied that before His return, the earth would be like it was

in the days of Noah and Lot.

7. IN NOAH’S DAY A. There was excessive love-making and eating.

B. They did not give their lives or their bodies to God.

8. IN LOT’S DAY A. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were perverted in their physical and

sexual relations.

B. Lust became a god. God stamped out the entire kingdom.

Page 92: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

9. AMERICA IS FOLLOWING THE DAYS OF NOAH AND LOT A. Americans are living the same way people did in Noah’s and Lot’s time by

worshipping at the altar of the human body.

B. Modern advertising is excessively body-related.

C. Fashions by designers are strongly body-related.

10. ISRAEL TURNED FROM GOD TO WORSHIP A COW Exodus 32:5, 8, And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron

made proclamation, and said, Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.

v. 8, They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

A. We see the sad story of Israel turning from her spiritual relationship with a living God to worship the devil through a cow. The people took off their clothes and were naked before the idol.

B. The devil caused man to lose his original garments in Eden where he found himself naked. The devil always wishes to unclothe man.

C. The demoniac of Gadara was naked. He put on clothes when he was healed.

Mark 3:15, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.

D. The Brazilian witch doctor would come to himself in a cemetery and find himself naked.

Revelation 3:18, I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of they nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.

11. GOD’S PORTS OF ENTRY: THE FIVE SENSES A. The eyes: Love or lust can flow from the eyes.

B. The mouth (tongue): God does not have you until He has your tongue. The tongue links the body and soul, like a bit in the horse’s mouth (James 3:2-3).

Page 93: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

C. The ears

Revelation 2:17, He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

D. The nose

Genesis 2:7, God . . . breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

E. The touch

Matthew 14:36, . . . as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

12. SATAN’S PORT OF ENTRY TO THE BODY AND SOUL A. Adultery: Looking upon a person in lust leads to adultery.

B. Anger

Ephesians 4:26-27, Be ye angry and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath;

v. 27, Neither give place to the devil.

C. Cursing

Psalm 109:17, As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.

D. Dancing: the compulsion to move the human torso in satanic rhythm

The human body normally moves with dignity and beauty. The devil wants it to crawl like a serpent, and to wiggle like a worm. Dancing was holy and good. The devil took it and degraded it.

E. Drinking: The devil likes to see a person fume like a drunk.

13. THE SPIRIT MUST CONTROL YOUR SOUL AND BODY A. This is possible.

B. It leads to eternal life.

READING: I Thessalonians 5:23, And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. INTRODUCTION: We can learn to live the total life of the total man. It is physical, soulical, and spiritual. Which part of your human person takes the most of your life? 1. THE TOTAL MAN IS IN THREE PARTS OR DIMENSIONS

A. Man’s physical being takes up a major portion of his time. For example, if a person works for eight hours a day at manual or office labor, he is relating himself to a physical task which very likely corresponds very closely with his soulical parts.

B. The second largest time element of the total man is spent in sleep. During his

sleep, he relates very strongly to his total three components.

1) His body recovers energy through relaxation and rest for the muscles.

2) His soulical parts--his mind and emotions undergo a time of refreshment. The Christian’s guardian angel watches over his mind, emotions, and will. When he wakes, he is more in tune with his spirit than when he lay down to sleep. Every morning the soulical parts of man and his physical parts can become new to make a successful and happy life.

3) His spirit is open for God to teach him.

The spirit of man should be the lord over the soulical and the physical parts of the total man. The spirit does not need rest like the mind, emotions, and will do.

The spirit does not need sleep like the physical man, which requires eight hours of unconscious life. Therefore, the spirit can be active during this period of man’s day by guiding him in his work with joy, peace, and reaching out for God. During man’s sleep period, the spirit can hover over him and very likely can teach the unconscious subjection to the Most Holy God.

2. THE LAST EIGHT HOURS

With the help of Dr. Robert Wesche, we have divided up the last eight hours of the human day for the total man.

Page 96: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Total Man Living in a 24-Hour Work Day Lesson 16

95

We have given two hours to eating. This would include three meals: breakfast, which possibly takes the shortest time; lunch, a bit longer; and dinner, the longest. This eating period can be spiritual, soulical, and physical.

A. Your spirit man can rejoice in the supply of food with which God has supplied your needs.

B. Your soulical man can think, feel, and will--even while eating.

C. Your physical man can put fuel into the body to regain strength which can be

appreciated by the eyes of beautiful things, by taste of delicious food, and by touch as one actually touches the food. Therefore, the total man can be part of the eating experience.

3. THE FAMILY AND THE TOTAL MAN

A. The family must be together. Some families are together more often than others are. The family is bound together by spirit, soul, and body. It would be impossible to estimate the value of the family hour relating to the total man. When this hour fails, the total man fails.

B. Family life should bring great joy for your spirit. It is the greatest satisfaction

for your mind and emotions, as well as the greatest physical relationship among humans.

4. SEX AND THE TOTAL MAN

A. In the average day, Dr. Wesche has chosen one hour for sex. This could be defined in any of the following ways:

1) A young man visiting a young lady

2) A man talking to a woman

3) A woman talking to a man

4) A husband and wife

B. The total man must have a properly-adjusted sex life as it reaches his spirit,

soul, and body. 5. WORSHIP AND THE TOTAL MAN

A. We have given 1 hour as a time for worship.

Page 97: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Total Man Living in a 24-Hour Work Day Lesson 16

96

For this worship we actually mean man can go to church or read the Word with the family.

B. However, we believe that the total man keeps a sense of worship through his spirit constantly. We live by our spirits.

C. This special time is related both to others and to His worship.

6. SOCIAL ENTERTAINMENT AND THE TOTAL MAN

A. This is the uncertain area of the total man. Some people require more entertainment than others do. Some feel a great need to go outdoors and play games. Others prefer to read a book or talk quietly with a friend.

B. This three-hour period could very easily be shifted into the worship period, the

family period, and possibly some of the work period. The main factor of the total man is that he is a human person living on planet earth, made from ingredients of the earth. He is of:

1) Water

2) Air

3) Soil

4) Iron

7. WHAT’S INSIDE OF A MAN?

A. These are material things compounded together in the physical part of the total man.

B. The soulical part of the total man is not material at all. His three dynamic areas

of actions are:

1) Mind--thought

2) Emotions--feelings

3) Will--decisions 8. THE HUMAN SPIRIT The born-again person

Page 98: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 17

LIVING BY THE HUMAN SPIRIT

97

READING: Romans 1:9, For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.

INTRODUCTION: Our world is sick. It is disjointed, out of kilter. The outward man is neither in conjunction nor harmony with the inward man. They go in opposite directions. The outward man refuses to obey the inward.

1. DIVINE UNITY A. Divine unity of the spirit, soul, and body with the Holy Spirit as king, produces

health and happiness.

B. The breakdown of this divine personality causes insane asylums, psychiatric wards, and doctors offices to be overcrowded.

C. God gave the divine answer.

Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lusts of the flesh.

D. The Christian must first recognize the consciousness of his inner man before he can walk in the spirit. Otherwise, he will not know how or when he is in the spirit. If a person cannot recognize the difference between the senses of his spirit and soul, he will miss the spirit.

2. THE BATTLE OF THE SPIRIT A. Satan is a spirit, but aligned in opposition to God, who is the Spirit. The devil is

a destroyer of the human spirit, soul, and body. Our greatest battle with him is in the spirit, not in the soul or body.

Ephesians 6:12, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood. . .

Page 99: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

Living by the Human Spirit Lesson 17

98

B. The Apostle Paul said in II Corinthians 5:16, Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh. . .

That is, the outer man of body and soul. Paul knew men by their spirits.

C. Our world today operates in the opposite manner. We know people by a beautiful body, which may possess a dead spirit.

Ephesians 2:1, And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.

D. We know the soul by a sharp mind or fiery emotions. The body senses cry out:

1) Our sense of hunger or thirst is dominant, strong, and persistent.

2) Our sense of cold or heat calls out for protection of more or fewer clothes.

3. THE LIFE IN THE SPIRIT A. Praying is one of the greatest abilities of the Spirit.

Romans 8:26, . . . but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Jesus spoke about prayer in Matthew 7:7--ask, power of the body; seek, power the soul; knock, power of the spirit.

B. Fasting and the spirit life

When you fast, your spirit rules the body and soul. It dictates a path of life. In weakening the body and soul, the spirit comes amazingly alive.

C. Guidance through the human spirit

Man seeks many means of guidance. His body has instinct, touch, sight, and hearing.

His soul has emotion, led by excitement. Motivation of excitement may not be pure or spiritual.

Walking in the spirit is never a life of imitation. It is original.

D. The gifts of the Holy Spirit and the human spirit.

I Corinthians 12:8-10, For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same spirit;

v. 9, To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gift of healing by the same Spirit;

v. 10, To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.

Page 100: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

Living by the Human Spirit Lesson 17

99

The spirit of man becomes the container for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Out of man’s spirit flows supernatural revelation, power, and inspiration through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

E. Luke 21:19, In your patience possess ye your souls.

I Peter 1:22, Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit. . .

Luke 1:46-47, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

v. 47, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

Note the difference stated by the Virgin Mary.

1) The soul doth.

2) The spirit hath.

Romans 7:22, For I delight in the law of God after the inward man.

Ephesians 3:16, . . .to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.

F. Worship

John 4:24, God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

4. DOMESTIC UNION Marriage exists in three dimensions: one union--united in three worlds.

A. Spirit

B. Soul

C. Body

5. LIVING BY THE HUMAN SPIRIT--SPIRITUALLY Romans 1:9, For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His

Son. . .

A. Religiously, it is possible to be born again and possess a living spirit, and yet not be entirely directed by our spirit.

B. Any religious ceremony that draws attention to the five senses, or the soulical person, is diverting strength and purpose to the Adamic person rather than to the Jesus person.

Page 101: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

Living by the Human Spirit Lesson 17

100

C. Paul discussed dramatically in the book of Romans about the battle that rages between the carnal nature of man and his spiritual nature. This battle and its victory, or defeat, can only be determined by you within your spiritual self (Romans 7).

D. Allurements from the outside

Some are demonic. Some are related to our eyesight or hearing. These enticements can be overcome by the positive spiritual elements functioning through the Holy Spirit.

E. The Bible says in Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

F. It is your personal decision to live in the human spirit rather than in the human soul that makes you victorious.

6. ECONOMICALLY A. Financially, there are major decisions to make. There is strong diverse opinion

regarding the Christian finances.

B. Can every Christian expect to be financially successful?

Luke 6:38, Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.

C. When my sons were small, it really did not bother me whether their toys cost 10¢ or $10. What mattered was their attitude toward me as their father.

The things of this world are temporary, if we set our devotion toward them, they become as gods to us. Then we do not live by the spiritual man.

D. Abraham was able to handle prosperity and live in the spirit. His nephew, Lot, simply could not do this. In prosperity, he forgot the source of his blessing and his life became a catastrophe.

7. MORALLY Spiritual life must manifest in moral purity.

8. SOCIALLY A. Raising children

B. Caring for a husband or wife

9. EMOTIONALLY You can’t be spiritually great until your emotions are right.

10. SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY RELATED TO A MIRACLE A. Most miracles are three-pronged, having three parts. For example, the birth of

Jesus:

1) Spirit: Revelation to Mary’s spirit, by the angel, Gabriel, of the Savior to be born (Luke 1:26-33).

2) Soul: Mary believed and accepted with her mind, emotions, and will (Luke 1:38).

3) Body: The physical body of Jesus was conceived (Luke 1:35). Mary carried the baby (Luke 2:5). Then the birth of Jesus occurred (Luke 2:7).

B. It took all three parts to perform the most perfect miracle of all time. These three are one!

11. PETER AND THE FISH WITH A COIN A. Spirit: Jesus had the revelation of a certain fish with a coin in its mouth.

Matthew 17:27, Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for Me and thee.

B. Soul: Peter accepted his instructions and went to the water with line, hook, and bait. His mind, emotions, and will were involved.

C. Body: Peter’s body obeyed; he caught a physical fish with the material coin in its mouth.

THE HUMAN MIND AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH

103

READING: A. I Peter 1:13, Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end

for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

B. I Corinthians 2:16, For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that He may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

INTRODUCTION: One of the three primary actions of the human mind (soul) is thought. Through his mind, man thinks, imagines, learns, and understands. His mind distinguishes him from all other earthly creatures.

Man’s mind has the power to reason and decide. The human mind occupies a large place in human life, as it determines actions and destiny.

Homo Sapiens means man, the thinker. The human brain, like the heart, works ceaselessly, pulsating day and night, from childhood to old age. In its three pounds of tissue are recorded and stored billions upon billions of memories, habits, instincts, abilities, desires, hopes, and fears. Here are patterns and sounds, and inconceivably delicate calculations, as well as primitively crude urgencies.

The idea that man thinks and uses his brain all the time is a familiar notion. But a less familiar concept is that all of human history might best be understood as a process of learning.

Page 105: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

104

1. THE AGE-LONG BATTLE FOR THE MIND A. God wants the human mind under divine subjection. It should be directed

through the human spirit by the agency of the Holy Spirit.

B. The devil wants, above all else, to capture the human mind.

C. Because the mind of man is so important, it has been, and still is, a perpetual battlefield. The mind suffers greater onslaughts from the power of darkness than any other part of the human personality.

2. THE BATTLE FOR THE MIND BEGAN IN EDEN In the Garden of Eden, Satan sought to conquer man through Eve. Paul warns us not

to be deceived as she was by the devil’s cunning thoughts.

II Corinthians 11:3, But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

3. THE BATTLE FOR THE MIND RAGES ON A. II Corinthians 4:4, In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of

them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

B. Romans 1:28, And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.

4. THE PASSIVE MIND Man is primarily a creature of thought. His mind is an organ of thought.

With his mind he knows, thinks, imagines, and understands. Man’s mind has the power to reason and decide. The human mind occupies a large place in a man’s life as it determines his actions.

Being so impressive, the mind of man becomes a battlefield.

A. God wants the mind. It should function through the spirit. The devil, above all, wants to capture the mind. This makes it an open field of battle.

B. II Corinthians 4:4, In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

II Corinthians 3:14, But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ.

Ephesians 2:3, Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Ephesians 4:22-23, That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

v. 23, And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Colossians 1:21, And you that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled.

Romans 8:7, Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

C. In the Garden, Satan appealed to the mind of Eve.

In II Corinthians 11:3, Paul warns us not to be deceived like Eve by his cunning thoughts. The mind actually suffers greater onslaughts from the powers of darkness than any other organ of man.

5. THE PASSIVE MIND IS EMPTY A. An empty mind is one waiting for an external power to activate it. A blank

mind is a great danger. A Christian must exercise his mind.

B. The mind should grow stronger as one grows older. God does not want mental inertia. When the mind ceases to create, comprehend and apprehend, it is sick. The mental process should never be under bondage. An inactive mind desires to do things but never does them.

C. Vanity of the mind

Ephesians 4:17, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind.

D. Fleshly mind

Colossians 2:18, Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vanity puffed up by his fleshly mind.

E. A defiled mind

Titus 1:15, Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Worry can become this type of inactivity. The mind becomes weakened to a point where it cannot function properly.

Page 107: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Human Mind and Spiritual Health Lesson 18

106

F. Lack of concentration

The devil interferes with the Christian’s power of mental concentration. Some people are totally powerless to concentrate. In others concentration is flighty. This lack of concentration creates inattentiveness and a drifting mind.

G. Forgetfulness

Some people are deprived of the power of memory. They forget what they just said or they cannot locate an article they just had in their hand. All unnatural loss of memory is the attack of the devil. This causes our confidence and usefulness to be damaged. A person with a fine memory can see it unexpectedly fail. This is an attack of Satan and has to do with the passive mind.

H. Vacillation

The devil would like for every person to take opposing views very quickly. The devil makes him generate one kind of thought and immediately shifts it to another kind of thought. This shifting is the work of the adversary. A vacillating mind is the devil’s tool.

I. Sleepless nights--The unrelaxed mind

Insomnia is a common illness. It is a work of the enemy of the mind. People lie in bed for endless hours thinking about all sorts of things. Their mind is like a machine that cannot be turned off. One can rebuke this situation. He can ask if this is of God, me, or from the devil? The Lord gives sleep.

J. Flashing thoughts

As one permits all kinds of ideas to flash through his brain, the devil will motivate most of it. Nonsensical notions will be there.

K. Talkativeness

The devil would like to destroy the Christian’s mind by causing you to never listen, just talk. Things drift through your brain like a wind. Some people cannot restrain their tongue from gossiping, backbiting, joking--a torrent of words without thinking leads to sin.

L. Mind pictures

A person’s mind permits mind pictures to develop on a mental screen. Whether the pictures are good or bad, the experience of having them is not good. If the mind is permissive, these pictures will dominate and manipulate the person.

Page 108: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

The Human Mind and Spiritual Health Lesson 18

107

M. Dreams and nightmares

Some dreams are inspired of God. Others are generated by the devil. Still others are produced by psychic conditions. There are mind dreams that form part of the mental pictures developed during the day. At night, the brain is less active and the passive spirit of the brain can be manipulated by the devil. Some of these dreams cause man to wake up with a despondent spirit. His strength was not replenished by sleep.

6. WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT THE PASSIVE MIND? We must bring every thought into captivity.

II Corinthians 10:5, Casting down imaginations, and every thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Ephesians 4:17-18, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

v. 18, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.

7. THE MIND CAN CAUSE SPIRITUAL VISION The mind says:

A. You are God’s special vessel.

B. Your work will shake the world.

C. You are more spiritual all the time.

D. God will open amazing doors of ministry for you.

E. The mind is dreaming of great and marvelous things on your behalf.

8. THE MIND OF CHRIST A. With salvation, man’s mind undergoes a dramatic change.

I Corinthians 2:16, For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

B. Use the sword of the Spirit, it not only unshackles but also empowers.

1) The mind becomes active in spiritual rebirth.

2) The mind develops its powers of concentration.

I Peter 1:13, Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

3) The renewed mind is yielded to the human spirit, which is yielded to the Holy Spirit.

THE SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY OF GOD THE FATHER

109

READING: Genesis 1:26-27, And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

INTRODUCTION: Man is made in the image and likeness of God. He is a true image. The inner man, or spirit, is in the image of God, and the outer man, the body, is in the image of God.

John 1:18, No man hath seen (horao) God at any time. . . means that no one has fully understood God at any time. The Greek word, horao, means to comprehend or understand. Christ declared, or interpreted, God to mankind.

1. THE SPIRIT OF GOD THE FATHER

A. God is a Spirit. He has a personal Spirit.

The prophet Amos saw the Lord standing.

Amos 9:1, I saw the Lord standing upon the altar. . . B. God has hands.

Genesis 2:7, And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground. . . C. God has a face.

Genesis 32:30, And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face. . . Exodus 33:11, And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. . .

D. God has fingers. Daniel 5:5, In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the King’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. He walked with Enoch.

Genesis 5:22-24, And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

v. 23, And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

v. 24, And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

F. God has a voice.

He spoke at the baptism of Jesus.

Matthew 3:17, And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

He talked to Isaiah (Isaiah 1).

CHRIST’S SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY

113

READING: Romans 5:18-19, Therefore as by the offense of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon men unto justification of life.

v. 19, For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

INTRODUCTION: Death, which came to this earth because of sin, permeated man’s spirit, soul, and body. Since then, man must receive God’s power in three areas (his tripartite salvation), spirit, soul, and body.

The man who sins must die. He must pay the penalty of judgment in three areas. In Luke 16, the man in hell was conscious of such judgment.

However, Jesus Christ was without sin in His spirit, soul, and body. He suffered the penalty of sin for mankind to redeem him to God (John 3:16).

Our spirit, soul, and body have been judged in the sinless sacrifice of Christ. His death was accepted as our death. We have already died in the Lord.

Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Christ’s Spirit, Soul, and Body Lesson 20

114

1. IN CHRIST WE SEE AN EXAMPLE OF DIVINE PERFECTION IN THE HUMAN PERSONALITY

A. Christ was born of the Spirit (Matthew 1).

1) When Christ was 12 years old, He was guided and motivated by the Spirit, asking and answering questions in Jerusalem before the religious leaders. He did not learn these truths, they were revealed.

2) Christ was anointed of the Spirit.

Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.

3) The Holy Spirit rested upon Christ at baptism.

Matthew 3:16, And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him.

4) Christ lived and ministered through His spirit--free, open, and joyful.

Matthew 4:23, And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

5) Christ’s total body and soul were always subject to His spirit.

B. Soul

1) His mind--I have come not to destroy, but fulfill. (Matthew 5:17)

116

7. THE THREE WORLD SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST Christ suffered sin’s most bitter pain in three dimensions. He suffered in His spirit,

soul, and body. A. Physical suffering--The stripes, thorns, cross, nails, spear, and slaps. He had

no bed. He often hungered.

B. Soulical suffering--The organ of self-consciousness. The shame of the cross.

THE TOTAL MAN AND THE FINAL BATTLE

117

READING: A. Ephesians 6:10-12, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of

His might. v. 11, Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. v. 12, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

B. Revelation 12:12, Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

INTRODUCTION: Great nations at war ponder if the decisive battle will be fought on land, air, sea, or under the sea.

1. WE ARE DEFINITELY LIVING IN THE LAST MOMENTS OF THIS GENERATION

A. Do you feel it spiritually?

1) Just as Babylon must have felt on the last night of its history--

2) Just as the citizens of Rome must have felt while the fiery tongues of hell raged through the imperial city--

Page 119: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · 2019-02-15 · v. 27, So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He

1) Like a dying animal

2) Strategic battles for total personality

3) Man is the center of the final great battle

READING: A. Acts 9:3-6, And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there

shined round about him a light from heaven:

v. 4, And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?

v. 5, And he said, Who art Thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

v. 6, And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

B. I Corinthians 2:2, 3, 10, 11, For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

v. 3, And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

v. 10, But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

v. 11, For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.

v. 5, Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

THE TOTAL MAN Lesson 23

THE SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY OF THE INFANT CHURCH

125

READING: A. Acts 2:1-4, And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one

accord in one place.

v. 2, And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

v. 3, And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

v. 4, And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

B. II Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

INTRODUCTION: The infant church was born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:13). It was the infant body of Christ, a new creature.

1. DAY OF PENTECOST A. Body--Acts 2:1, They were all of one accord in one place.

B. Soul--They were obedient through a willful act to the Lord, who had told them to wait in Jerusalem (Luke 24:49).

C. Spirit--They had a visitation of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4).

2. DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW CREATURE THE INFANT CHURCH A. Peter, after being anointed by the Holy Spirit, preached on the Day of

Pentecost, and 3,000 souls were saved.

Acts 2:14, 41, But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judæa, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

v. 41, Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

B. Through the fatal experience of Ananias and Sapphira, the infant church learned to be truthful. Acts 5:1-5, But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, v. 2, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. v. 3, But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? v. 4, Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. v. 5, And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

C. The leaders were physically arrested, beaten, and jailed (Acts 5:17-42).

1) They suffered in the body.

2) In the soul, they decided to obey God.

Acts 5:29, Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

3) Acts 5:41, And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

D. The first martyr--Stephen

Acts 6:9, Then there arose arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

Acts 7:60, And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
