• About the Course

• This course introduces students to the rudiments of the traditional way of life of a number of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria. It also introduces candidates to the history of the introduction of Western education in Nigeria and the effects this have on the people’s culture.

Introduction

• All registered students are welcome to this course. It is hoped that your experience of this course will enable you appreciate the good aspects of Nigeria’s indigenous culture and custom. This will include indigenous moral education, civil administration, oral transmission of knowledge as well as the system of political organisation in the various Nigerian communities.

Introduction• This course is important for all would-be

Nurses. Please bear in mind that it is not sufficient to be versatile in the theories and practicalities of nursing without a thorough knowledge of the way of life of those to be nursed. This is one reason why this course is necessary. It will also open individual student’s insight into the way of life of those that lived in our various traditional communities so that one will not look like a stranger in his/her native country.

Aim

• This course will seek to promote in learners the following:– appreciation of the Nigerian culture and custom

– appreciation of the virtues of honesty, respect for elders, chastity and dignity of labour which are hallmarks of Nigeria’s indigenous culture and customs.

– good knowledge of the evolution of western education in Nigeria

Learning Objectives

• The objectives are to help students to:

• understand the basics of the culture of Nigerian people

• appreciate the contexts and perspectives of transmission of knowledge and skills in the traditional Nigerian communities

• Develop essential background knowledge of the way western education was introduced to Nigeria

• Attain a basic understanding of the Nigeria’s National Policy on Education

• Understand the basic elements and orientations of the indigenous economic system in Nigeria

Such acronyms and symbols will only be used after their full meaning might have been given in the first instance in the text.

How to prepare for examination

• You could obtain a copy of the textbook listed below so as to enrich your knoledge of the course: Fafunwa, B. A. (1973). History of Education in Nigeria. Lagos: Macmillan . The book is not required to pass the examination; however, it will provide excellent additional information concerning this course if you choose to read it.

Prerequisites

• The only prerequisite for this course is that of registration as 200 Level student of the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Part-Time B.Sc. Nursing programme. The course is not available to 100 students unless it is so decided by the management.

Preparatory Questions • At the end of each section of the course note, there

are sample questions covering the objectives that were to be learned in the section

• These questions may be different from the questions that will eventually appear in the actual examination, but you could be certain that they will all test the same concept, knowledge and skills

• After each question, answer is immediately provided along with an explanation on why that answer is the correct answer

Assessment

• Continuous Assessment: The proposed course assessment would be:

• Participation in the online discussions: (20%).

• Assignment: 20%. The assignment will be given to learners mid-way into the semester

• Results will be communicated to candidates shortly after the submission of the assignment to the course lecturers

Assessment

• Examination will consist of two papers namely Objective (30 Multiple Choice items) and Essay sections. Each of the two sections will carry 30 marks, totalling 60 marks.

Infringement

• The Centre for Distance Learning frowns at plagiarism. This attracts significant penalties, students are therefore to be as original as possible in their submissions in this course.

• Penalties may include

• a deduction of marks,

• failure in the course, and/or

• referral to the Centre’s Disciplinary Committee.
