Studying abroad offers a wonderful opportunity for you to become a global citizen while gaining an intimate knowledge of a country, its culture, and people that you

cannot gain online or through books.

The University of Tasmania provides a unique and fascinating study destination. In addition to a world-class education and vibrant student lifestyle, we are also fortunate to be located in one of the world’s truly spectacular natural environments. Many courses give you the opportunity to take your studies beyond the traditional classroom and into Tasmania’s great outdoors – on field trips, through work placements, and through our sustainability program. All these opportunities will provide you with real-world experiences and the chance to engage with the friendly local community – and an unforgettable Australian experience.

We look forward to welcoming you into our vibrant Tasmanian student community very soon.

Our State has many species found nowhere else on Earth and more than 40 per cent of the State is protected in national parks and reserves, including World Heritage-listed wilderness.

Tasmania is roughly the size of Ireland or Sri Lanka, with a population of just over half a million people. It is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait and is only a one-hour flight from Melbourne.

You will love living and learning in our beautiful State.

TASMANIA: THE PERFECT DESTINATIONTasmania is Australia’s only island state and its most southern island state. It is famous for its pure air, clear skies, and stunning natural beauty.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY STUDY ABROAD AND EXCHANGE?

Lake St Clair National Park Photography Kelly Slater

“I chose to study at the University of Tasmania not only to improve my English, but because I was curious about this beautiful little island on the other side of the world. What I will remember most about my semester is travelling, road trips, and camping in the moonlight. Tasmania offers a multitude of different landscapes, all more beautiful than the next.” Maxime Maida, France

FAST FACT Hobart is an acknowledged Antarctic gateway and Tasmania has one of the world’s highest concentrations of marine and Antarctic science and research organisations. Our multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) building on Hobart’s waterfront brings together Tasmania’s considerable strengths in marine and Antarctic science in one teaching and research facility.

FAST FACT Tasmania has Australia’s oldest brewery, the Cascade Brewery in Hobart, which was established in 1824.

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital city and the home of our largest campus. Our Sandy Bay campus has impressive views of the iconic kunanyi/Mount Wellington on one side and the magnificent Derwent River on the other. It is set on 100 hectares on the banks of the Derwent, about five minutes from the city centre. Flanked by bushland, students are often treated to the sight of native possums and wallabies in the early mornings and evenings.

In the Hobart CBD area, you will find our Conservatorium of Music, the School of Creative Arts, the Media School, Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, and College of Health and Medicine.

Hobart has an exciting range of cultural, outdoor, and entertainment experiences, including fantastic cafes and restaurants, vibrant festivals and open-air markets, and world-class museums and galleries. Hobart is also close to some of the most beautiful national parks and pristine wilderness found anywhere in the world.

Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city, is nestled amongst rolling hills near the Tamar River. The city is accessible, friendly, and close to a range of fantastic outdoor and wilderness experiences. Our Newnham campus is situated on 50 hectares on the banks of the Tamar, only 10 minutes from the city centre. This is also where the Australian

Maritime College, the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, and the sport and recreation centre are located.

Our School of Creative Arts and Media and our award-winning School of Architecture and Design are a short bike ride away from the Newnham campus, and a short walk from the CBD, on the site of the historic rail yards at Inveresk.

Launceston is famed for the picturesque Cataract Gorge, where you can go walking, rock climbing, or abseiling. The city is also known for fantastic food and wine, including Tamar Valley wineries, and the annual Festivale: Launceston’s food, music, and wine festival.

STUDENT LIFE

“I chose to study at the University of Tasmania because my home university is in a busy city with lots of people, and I wanted to study surrounded by nature. As soon as I arrived here, all I could see was beautiful scenery and unique animals that I had never seen before. The University of Tasmania is the best place for me to study, with supportive teachers and friends, and the opportunity to learn new skills surrounded by nature.”Rie Niwa, Japan

Arranging accommodation You need to make your own arrangements for accommodation and ensure you have somewhere to stay for when you first arrive in Tasmania.

If you want to apply for on-campus accommodation, you should apply as early as possible — at least three months before you arrive.

If you are interested in shared or private rental housing, it is usually better to wait until you arrive in Tasmania but at the same time have some temporary accommodation arranged for your arrival.

Some temporary accommodation options are listed on the airport pickup form utas.edu.au/ international-support/forms/airport-pickuprequest and the Discover Tasmania website discovertasmania.com.au/where-to-stay
