Auburn University is offering an intensive academic language program in San José, Costa Rica for undergraduate and graduate students as well as teachers of Spanish.

Upon arrival in San José, students will meet their Costa Rican host families and tour the university campus and surrounding areas. A placement test and orientation will confirm the students’ course selection. Weekly cultural tours enrich the language instruction; guided visits included in the program introduce participants to the Museums of Gold and Jade, the National Theater and Museum, the Britt coffee plantation, Poás Volcano, La Paz waterfalls, Tortuga Island, and the Virgen de los Ángeles cathedral. All courses are taught at the Universidad de Costa Rica by native-speaking instructors with classes meeting Monday through Friday 5 hours a day; two long weekends are provided with optional excursions to Monte Verde rain forest and Manuel Antonio beach planned.

Students will have the benefit of an authentic full im-mersion experience thanks to their home stay with an approved Costa Rican family. This ensures that lan-guage learning and cultural exposure extend beyond the classroom. Each participant is guaranteed a single occupancy room with a family who meets the program’s high standard of fitness. All houses are within close proximity to campus either by bus or on foot. Board includes 2 meals a day: a hearty breakfast and a family-style dinner.

Costa Rica, nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Pa-cific Ocean, brims with natural wonders and cultural gems. It is a land rift with contrast—beaches and rainforests backed up against jagged mountains and fuming volcanoes, political stability and pacificism in the midst Central America, economic stability contrasted with the poverty of its neighbors, and finally, a relatively homogenous population surrounded by pluri-ethnic countries. Mystical rainforests and idyllic beaches are only a short jaunt away from the bustling capital city of San José. With its year-round springtime climate and tourist-friendly locals, Central America’s “rich coast” ranks tops among the world’s “Happiest Nations”. San José serves as the cultural and intellectual hub; while enrolled at Universidad de Costa Rica — the nation’s premier higher learning institute—, students enjoy a central location that allows easy weekend and day trips to pristine natural landscapes home to enchantingly diverse flora and fauna. It takes no time at all before the participant feels a part of the “Tican” culture and embraces the country’s “Pura Vida” motto. Study abroad in Costa Rica teaches participants to live life fully in harmony with the natural and urban environment.

The specific objective of the program is to provide students and teachers of Spanish with a most conducive environment for the intensive study of the Spanish language and His-panic culture as expressed in Costa Rica. In order to increase linguistic competence, enhance understanding of the cultural dimensions of language, and encourage interaction with local culture, the participant will be placed in a total immersion program according to his/her previous study of Spanish. Since the primary objective of the program is full cultural and linguistic immersion, each participant will be expected to communicate in Spanish at all times.

J. W. Goethe wrote about Sicily, in his book Italianische Reise, “Without Sicily, Italy cannot be fully understood. It is here one finds the key to all things.” In arts, law, and sciences, Sicilian contribution has been enormous: Caronda, Pirandello, Quasimodo (2 Nobel Prizes), Verga, Bellini, Antonello da Messina, Renato Guttuso, Sciascia, Vittorini, Tornatore, Dolce & Gabbana are unforgettable, without mentioning writers who have written of it (among these are Vivant Denon, Maupassant, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, and D. H. Lawrence). Taormina, on top of the Mount Tauro hill, overlooking the coastline of the Ionian Sea, is a treasure chest of history: walking along its streets, one finds a Theatre and Gymnasium of the Greek Empire, Odeon and Baths of the Roman Empire, and architectural traces of the Byzantine, Arab, and Norman dominations. It offers many opportunities of entertainment, among these the International Festival of Taormina Arte (films, operas, plays, ballets, and concerts) from May to July. The school is housed in a four-story XIX building which faces the community tennis courts, the lush public gardens, the magnificent bay of Naxos and the impressive Mount Etna. The teaching methodology emphasizes the communicative approach in classrooms of no more than 10 students to ensure that students are able to employ the Italian language in the Italian context. The school, Il Centro di Lingua e Cultura Italiana Babilonia, is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, I.A.L.C. (International Association of Language Centres) A.S.I.L.S.(Association of Language Schools of Ital-ian as a Foreign Language) and E.L.I.T.E. (Excellent Language Institutions Teaching in Europe), the University for Foreigners of Perugia, and the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice for teachers of Italian. It is quite easy to travel to any part of the country as well as to visit other parts of Europe. Students can travel at their own expense during the period after the end of the program.

This is an intensive five-week academic language and culture program for undergraduate students in Vienna, Austria. No previous knowledge of German is required, and it may be possible to fulfill your one-year language requirement while abroad. The program offers German classes at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced level as well as culture courses in English. If sufficient demand exists, it is also possible to take Political Science, History or Art History courses in Vienna for credit in those departments at Auburn University

One of the main objectives of the program is to provide students with an opportunity for a concentrat-ed study of German in order to broaden their compe-tence in the language. In addition, the program seeks to offer students a meaningful introduction to the rich heritage of European civilization as well as a broad picture of modern-day Austrian and/or European culture. The academic program is designed to accommodate the needs, interests, and proficiency levels of individual learners.

After acceptance into the program, students must print the Course Approval Form, consult with the Program Director about course work, and obtain departmental signatures. Upon admission to the program, all participants will be responsible for full payment of all fees and costs by the deadlines indicated.

Students will stay in private homes with host families. Room and partial board includes breakfast.

Vienna, known for its outstanding contributions to music, art and intellectual thought, is one of the great cosmopolitan cities of Europe. Vienna’s open air theaters, concert halls and breathtaking museums, its Gothic churches and Baroque palaces, the imperial parks and gardens, make it an ideal place for students to extend their learning experience beyond the classroom. It has been home to emperors, artists, scientists, philosophers, writers, and musicians who have played leading roles in the politics, art and literature of Europe for more than a millennium. Its wealth of stunning architecture bears witness to a city of artisans and builders. Vienna’s importance as part of the musical legacy of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, and Schönberg is recognized throughout the world. Acclaimed for the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir and Spanish Riding School, Vienna also gave rise to Freud and modern psychology, Loos and modern architecture, and Wittgenstein and modern philosophy. With its key position between East and West, Vienna also offers students many travel opportunities. The program includes excursions to other cities in Austria and/or Europe, and also has two program-free weekends for students to travel on their own or in small groups. In Vienna itself, opportunities such as a city bus tour and a one-day boat trip on the Danube are possible.

Upon arrival in Vienna, students will be given a walking tour and an orientation before classes begin. Classes run in the morning and early afternoon Monday through Thursday. Students will be taking undergraduate language and culture courses at the Austro-American Institute (AAIE) which is located in the heart of Vienna, directly across the street from the Vienna State Opera House. Most faculty members in Vienna will be native Austrians. Students may earn up to 8 semester hours of undergraduate credit in German courses (or Political Science, History or Art History courses; see Director for details). Placement and previous course work will determine the level and number of credits which students may receive. The program offers a three-day, two-night stay in Prague or Cracow as well as a possible second excursion. Past excursions have included Munich (with a visit to Neuschwanstein/Cinderella’s castle) and Salzburg. Student passes for unlimited access to Vienna’s public transportation system are provided so that students can discover the city’s many cultural offerings.

Space is limited and students must file formal applications as soon as they know for sure they are participating. Complete the Auburn Abroad Application online and wait for confirmation from the Program Director. Non-Auburn University students must also be accepted as transient students by AU ($50) and attach a transcript to qualify for the Summer Abroad program. All AU and non-AU students must submit the completed Auburn Abroad Application. (See http://www.auburn.edu/forlang “Study Abroad” for link to application.)
