ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

Thanks to all students for a very smooth start to the year. We are working hard to ensure that our classes are engaging and students are on track to show a year’s growth or more over the course of the academic year. There are some strategies that can support us to do this:

Homework planners are great in helping plan out an approach to completing homework and keeping at bay any anxiety that comes with that.

A quiet place to work at home.

Asking what went well in their day.

Asking for help and accessing tutorials at school. Our English team has started the implementation of a new online test called the PAT-R test across Years 7-10. This enables teachers to test student reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation. The gold in this testing is that it allows staff to target specific areas for improvement with students. Whilst in its infancy, the use of this online testing allows us to refine our teaching. A reminder that there is a general assembly this Friday at 3pm. Coming up:

This Thursday night we have a parent information evening for our Year 12 families from 7pm. This will be held at the Golf Club.

Wednesday 28th February sees approximately 50 students heading to Camperdown for the HSSSD swimming event. We wish all of you good luck.

Wednesday 7th March the senior boys cricket team will head to Ballarat.

Wednesday 14th March 7-12 House Athletics.

Kind regards, DAN WALKER

Swimming Program Last week’s weather was less than ideal for the swimming program, but teachers and students forged ahead. Some of the younger groups had a shorter time in the pool, to cater for the cold conditions. This week has been much nicer and fingers crossed it continues for the final week of the program, next week. The Swimming Sports for Years 3 to 6 will be next Friday, 2nd March. Miss Costelloe and Mr Venn have been busy making adjustments to last year’s program to ensure all student have the opportunity to participate. Ribbons will once again be given to all events, including the relays. I’m looking forward to my first Timboon Swimming Sports day and hope to see you there. “Go Callaway”. Congratulations to the students who trialled and made the times to compete in the Division Swimming Competition on the 7th March. Notes have gone home to parents with further information.

Coles Sports for Schools – 2018

Please send Coles Sports for Schools vouchers to school. Vouchers must be returned to school by the 11th May. All sports equipment purchased through the program will be added to the yard-borrowing equipment for all Prep-Year 6 students. P-6 Assembly Our first P-6 Assembly was held on Monday, run by our House Captains and Vice Captains. New to our Assembly is the introduction of class awards. Students who display our school values of Respect, Commitment and Empathy may be chosen by the classroom teacher to receive a certificate. Each class can award up to two certificates at each assembly, which are 3-4 weeks apart. The idea is that by the end of the year, each child will have received at least one award, and where necessary it gives some students a focus; improving their commitment, showing respect and/or empathy towards others. Assemblies are held at 9am on the basketball court area. This term’s assemblies will be on Monday 5th March and 26th March.

Teaching & Learning Focus All staff across the school have a focus on setting clear, meaningful Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for each lesson. This means that students are set clear goals to achieve each lesson and can reflect on if they have succeed in their goal, knowing what success looks like. There are some examples below: Japanese:

Maths (Prep):

Writing (Yr 5/6) Reading (Yr 3/4):

Page 4: Students recognised for consistently displaying our school ... · test called the PAT-R test across Years 7-10. This enables teachers to test student reading comprehension, grammar

Coming Up: Swimming program continues for another week. Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th March: - proposed catch-up swimming days (to be confirmed via a

note home to the classes affected)

Friday 2nd March: Swimming Sports (Year 3 to 6) Monday 5th March: P-6 Assembly @ 9am Wednesday 7th March: Division Swimming in Warrnambool

Year 12 study camp 8th - 9th February. Congratulations to the students (and their parents) – your behaviour and attitude do you credit. We visited Deakin University Waurn Ponds campus and had a quick walk through some of the residential accommodation options (it was unfortunate so many students were in residence so we were unable to look into their bedrooms) and students were given advice for applying for on campus residences in 2019 or after a GAP Year. Steven Grivas, the Language and Learning Advisor at Deakin, provided students with tips and hints about studying smarter during the year. After a quick visit to our accommodation at Melbourne University St. Mary’s, a current Melb Uni PHD student shared her experiences – her GAP years, leaving her Tasmanian home to study at Latrobe Uni, on campus accommodation as well as tips and hints for study during VCE. Derek Rowe’s session on Personality styles helped students to identify their key personality traits and strategies they can use to increase their effectiveness in and out of class. In addition to course information at RMIT, students were given information about Pathways through TAFE and into Uni that is applicable to most TAFEs and universities. The Optimal Sleep for VCE Success Workshop outlined the importance of adequate sleep (8-9 hours) as well as the importance of the different types of sleep. Adequate sleep is vital for memory formation and the last few hours (the ones that students often miss) are essential for processing emotions and minimising anxiety and stress). This week, I’ve been checking in with all our Year 12 VCE students – what they hope to achieve this year, lessons learned from 2017, challenges they see in the year ahead, changes they need to make to achieve success. Next week, we’re planning an evening session for parents (and students) where we will talk about expectations of students throughout the year and the support we can provide as they work to achieve their highest level of success. Check with your student / compass notifications.

Timboon School Parents’ Association (TSPA)

Meeting to be held Monday 5th

March 2018 at 7.30pm in admin building at school

All school parents and carers are invited to support the upcoming TSPA meetings. Old and new members, fresh faces, ideas and questions are warmly welcomed. TSPA contributes to the well- being of students, staff and the school community in a variety of ways. It supports the participation of parents and carers in school life, provides a forum for discussion of education issues and an opportunity to contribute to the process of formulating school policy. Importantly, it also undertakes fundraising initiatives to obtain resources that enrich student learning experiences.

Many hands make light work

We are asking for families to volunteer time to help with P-6 athletics and swimming carnival barbecues and the debutante ball for this first term. We will have two to three fundraisers per term for which volunteers are needed. Each year TSPA initiatives contribute several thousand dollars to boost resources and opportunities at our school. Families and school community members are encouraged to continue to offer support as able. Every little bit counts.

How money is raised a few listed below

What is achieved?

TSPA members review staff requests for funding. Recent purchases include:

Laptops for the art department Bee-keeping and chromosome simulation

kits for science

Mixers and aprons for home eco

Drills and sanders for woodwork

Medical EpiPens

Sporting equipment Guns for clay target shooting

Reading assessment material P-6 swimming program subsidy

MiniLit and MacqLit

Request for Parent volunteers We are looking for parents who would be interested in helping us to deliver early intervention programs targeting reading in the P-6 area. Tell me more. MiniLit and MacqLit are small group literacy intervention programs for low progress readers in Year 1 and 2 (MiniLit) and year 3 and above for MacqLit . Every session is scripted and involves explicit teaching of phonic skills in isolation and in text. Do I need any experience? No. Training will be provided and you are given a script to follow. You only say what is written down in front of you and wait for the students’ responses. It is carefully sequenced, clear, and easy to follow. How often is it run? A small group would work through an hour long session with their tutor 4 times a week. But whatever time you could commit to would be very much appreciated. The programs would run between 9 and 11am We will not be commencing the program till swimming finishes, but if you are interested and would like to know more, please fill out the form below and return it to school with your child. If you have any further questions please contact Gill Hampson or myself on 55 983381 Thank you, Lee McLeod

Timboon Debutante Ball 2018 Donations for Supper

The Timboon Deb ball is a major fund-raiser for the school so we are asking if anyone would like to donate some foods. We are asking for cakes, slices, and hot foods. Preferably hot foods that won't spill down a beautiful white dress :) Happy to accept frozen goods which can make it easier to make ahead of time. They can be dropped at the hall on the Thursday night before the Ball or on the Friday morning as well. I'm happy to collect frozen goods as well. Feel free to text me your name number and donation, or simply send this form back to the school. Thanks Jodie couch 0407 504 876
