Student’s Worksheet 2 VALENTINE’S DAY

The USAValentine’s Day is extremely popular in the USA. On that day people give their loved ones cards, roses and chocolates. If they live in different cities, they send e-cards and presents bought online. Children prepare handmade gifts for their friends and teachers. Couples go out on a date to a restaurant for a special romantic dinner.

IrelandIn Ireland, people do not sign the Valentine’s cards which they send. If you get a card, you do not know who it is from! On Valentine’s Day a lot of men propose to their girlfriends, but during a leap year – every four years – there is an old tradition of women asking their boyfriends to marry them.

PolandIn Poland, Valentine’s Day is popular, especially among young people. The most common gift that women get from their boyfriends or husbands is fl owers, usually roses. You must remember to give an odd (1,3,5 ... ) number of fl owers. People believe that an even number of fl owers brings bad luck.

DenmarkIn Denmark, one of the most popular Valentine traditions is the custom of sending white fl owers, called snowdrops, to friends and loved ones. Young men also write special funny poems called gaekkebrev and send them anonymously to the woman they love. If a girl can guess who the sender of the poem is, she receives a chocolate Easter Egg at Easter time.

ItalyValentine’s Day celebrations came to Italy from the USA. However, the day is celebrated only between lovers. Family members or friends do not exchange cards and gifts. A popular gift is a box of Baci, which means kisses. These are chocolate sweets wrapped separately in pieces of paper with love notes.

JapanIn Japan there are two Valentine’s Days: 14th February and 14th March. During the fi rst holiday, women give different types of chocolates to men. Giri-choco is for male bosses, co-workers and friends. Honmei-choco is for the men who Japanese women have a romantic relationship with: boyfriends or husbands. On 14th March, called White Day, men give white chocolates to the women they love. They often buy fl owers and other gifts too.

Valentine’s Day traditions around the worldValentine’s Day is the festival of love celebrated in different countries. There are interesting customs and traditions connected with the festival across the world.
