It was a bustling scene at the Tri-TESOL conference in Des Moines, Washington as over 900 attendees from Oregon (ORTESOL), British Columbia (BC TEAL) and Washington (WAESOL) gathered at Highline Community College on October 21st and 22nd. “English without Borders” was the conference theme, set amongst a backdrop of the host campus’ stunning scenery. Highline Community College sits atop a pristine wooded hillside overlooking the Puget Sound waterway and the Olympic mountains.

Seventeen instructors from OSU and INTO OSU attended the event. Our representatives not only gave presentations themselves, but also attended some great talks by people from institutions throughout Washington, British Columbia and Oregon. The event featured many interesting topics, including a presentation on excellent new resources for developing video-based academic listening exercises.

Byrne Brewerton and Erich White from INTO OSU, along with Irene Rolston from the Anthropology Department, presented a very well-received panel discussion on the partnership between INTO OSU and the Anthropology Department. “[The conference attendees] were interested in the set-up and operation of the INTO OSU program as well as in the Bridge course that assists students with the anthropology course,” said Byrne. “They also seemed to be impressed with the level of cooperation between INTO OSU and the Anthropology Department.”

Elena Sapp, General English Coordinator, was particularly interested in the topic of English without borders. “[Among the TESOL community], there can be a lot of discrimination against non-native English speakers teaching English,” Elena said, speaking from her own experience. “As a non-native English speaker myself, I am always curious about this subject

so I attended this presentation. They were saying that a lot of non-native English speakers can’t find jobs. I mentioned to the group that I am proud to work in a place that encourages diversity. In fact, we’ve hired a lot of international teachers and we have a lot of international people on staff who can speak many different languages. Our INTO center encourages diversity and sees that as a positive thing. It’s great to be a part of that.”

Overall, the teachers who attended the presentations walked away with positive outcomes not only in presenting their materials about OSU and INTO OSU, but having gained valuable ideas and new techniques to implement in their own classes. We are proud to have such a dynamic and accomplished group representing us at the Tri-TESOL conference, and glad to know that they offer a fresh perspective from a unique partnership. Well done, everyone!

INTO OSU already serves to promote diversity at OSU and in the Corvallis community, and the International Fair follows suit as a more direct way of promoting cultural awareness.
