1.Howdidyouspendyourtimethisweek?Whatresponsibilitiesdidyouhave?
Thisweek,IofficiallytookoverallofMs.Keller'sclassesandresponsibilities.Howmytimewasspentinclassesvariedforexample,myseniorcompositionstudentshadalotoftimetoworkandrevise,soIwasmostlyjustmonitoring.Contrastingly,myfreshmanEnglishstudentsneededalotofredirectingtostayontask,soIwasconstantlytalkingtogroupsofstudentsandkeepingthemfocused.Myresponsibilitiesoutsideoftheclassroomnowincludegrading,attendingELLandIEPmeetings,andplanning(ofcourse).
2.Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallengingexperiences?
Mymostsatisfyingexperiencewasprovidingareallysuccessfulwritingpromptformy11th/12thgraders.Lastweek,itwaspullingteethtogetthemtowriteaparagraphofanything,regardlessofcontentorstructure.Ireallyjustwantedthemtohavepenonpaperandgettingtheirideasoutthere,withoutworryingaboutstructure.Theirpromptwasa"HadToTattoo",meaningiftheyabsolutelyhadtogetatattootoday,whatwouldtheyget,whereandwhy.Itrelatedinthetextbecauseourmaincharacterwasalsogiventhechancetochooseatattooonthespot.ItwasahugesuccessIhadstudentswhoweretakingtwoorthreeparagraphstotalkaboutthemeaningbehindtheirtattooandtookalotofprideintheirchoiceandjustification.Itwasreally,reallysatisfyingtoseethempumpedupaboutwritingandthetext.MygreatestchallengelastweekwasmanagingmysecondperiodEnglishstudents.Ibelievethatgroupworkisreallyimportantinlearning,buttryingtokeepthesestudentsontaskisextremelydifficult.IalsofearthatIhaven'tmademyexpectationsclearenoughforthem,becausetheirgroupworktimeinevitablybecomessocialhouruntilIneartheirtable.I'mworkingonaplanforthatnextweek.

BasedonthepapersIgraded,my12thgradersaregoingtodoasplitunit.We'regoingtotakesometimetodiscussmorespecificallyhowpeerrevisionworks,andalsotalkaboutfluencyandsentencestructure.The11/12classisstillonDivergentandwillbeforseveralweeks.They'vegotashort,gradedwritingassignmentthisweek,andwillbefocusingonthecomprehensionskillsofMakingConnectionsandMonitoring.Hopefullybytheendofthisweek,theywillbepartnerreading.The9thgradersarefinishingup"MostDangerousGame"onTuesdaywithashortquiz.We'llspendadaycoveringirony,thenmoveontothenextstory,"TheGiftoftheMagi."

Thisweekwasdefinitelyanadventure.IbeganmirrorteachingandcoteachingsomeperiodswithMs.Keller,takingovertheclassesfullybyFriday.Istartedwithjustleadingthedailynormsintheclassroom,liketakingattendanceandaskingthestudentstoshare"GoodThings"abouttheirlives.Wealsotagteamedtroubleshootingtechnologyissueswithstudentsandredirectingstudentstokeepthemontaskduringworktime.
2.Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallengingexperiences?

Thiswasmythirdweektakingoverall3classes;however,duetomyabsences,Ididnotaccomplishallofmyplans.OnMondayIbegansomepromptswiththe12thgradecompositionclass.The9thgradersfinishedupandturnedinasmallprojectonirony,thenweregiventimetoeitherfreereadorworkonanindependentreadingproject.The11th/12thgradersreadindependentlyinDivergentandmadeconnectionstothetext.Aftermyillnessstruck,Ispentalotoftimegradingpreviousassignments(asmidtermiscomingup)andcollaboratingwithMs.Kellerandanotherspecialeducationteacher.
2.Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallengingexperiences?
Mymostsatisfyingexperiencewassomeofthestudent'sreactionstomyreappearance.Manyweregenuinelyexcitedtohavemebackasthemainteacher.Theymayhavejustbeenexcitedtocontinueoninunitornovel,butregardless,thatwasareallynicewelcomeback.Mymostchallengingexperiencewasseeinghowthe11th/12thgradeclasshadchanged.Aftergettingour30th(andcounting!)studentintheclassroom,legallyIhadtohavesomesortofextraaidintheclassroom.Ms.KellerandIdecidedacollaborativeclassbetweenthetwoofuswouldbebest.However,becauseofmyabsence,theatmosphereoftheclasschangeddramatically.StudentsthatIhadhadnoproblemswithpreviouslybeganactingoutandwhileIwasgoneshesentastudenttotheofficetwice.Thisparticularstudenthasraisedtroublebefore,butIofferedtotalkitoverwithhim,andwesettledthingsbeforewegotintoapowerstruggle.I'mnotsureentirelyhowtohandlethissituation.Whileontheonehand,Iabsolutelyneedhelpwithmanagingtheclassroom,IthinkIhaveabetterrapportwiththestudents(sinceMs.Kellerhasbeenoutoftheclassroomforafewweeks).ButIalsoknowthatIcanbeabitlaxonauthority,andMs.KellerprobablywantstoestablishstricterrulesforwhenIturntheclassbackovertoherinafewweeks.It'sjustaveryfinelinetobewalking,andIexpectthatitwillcontinuetobeachallengeforme.

reallyexcitedformy9thgradeunitwe'restudyingthemebycomparingBluesmusictoO.Henry's"GiftoftheMagi."OnFriday,they'llbetakingashortformativeassessment,justtoseewherethey'reatwiththeliteraryelements.11/12thgraderswillbesimultaneouslyreadingoninDivergentandalsorevisingacreativeessaytheyturnedinlastweek.Thetimingisn'tideal,butIthinkthestudentswillbeabletoaccomplishboth.Hopeyouhadagoodweekend!Seeyoutomorrow!

Thiswasmyfinalweekofhavingcontrolofallclasses.The12thgradershadaunitoncommunicatingideas,the9thgraderscontinuedtheirshortstoryunitwith"GiftoftheMagi"andthe11th/12thgradersarestillworkingthroughDivergentandbeganrevisionsonacreativewritingprojectfromlastweek.Iagainhadfullinstructionaltimeforeachoftheclasses,aswellassomeresponsibilitiesconcerningtheIEPsand504sofsomeofmystudents.IcoordinatedwithMs.KellerandthespecialeducationteacherMs.Hazeltononorganizingthe11/12classforthecomingweeks.
2.Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallengingexperiences?
OneofthethingsIparticularlyenjoyedthisweekwasthevastarrayofmediaIused.Ifoundagreatunitoutlineonhowtoteachthemeusingbluesmusicandwasabletofleshthatoutformy9thgraderstoalsoalignwith"GiftoftheMagi."My12thgraderswereworkingonideasandformalistvs.transactionaltheory,sowestudiedpoetryfromslampoetryperformancestoeecummingstoasongbytheWhiteStripsbeforegettingintotheirowncomposition.Ireallyenjoyedbeingabletoincorporateseveraldifferenttypesandstylesofmediaintomylessonsthisweek.Unfortunately,theweekdidn'tgoperfectly.Imadeabadcallwithmy9thgradeEnglishclass.Theirtwoweeksforaseatingarrangementwasup,andsoIallowedthemtositwherevertheywanted(withtheunderstandingthattheyneededtostillbeproductiveandrespectful).Iwasgoingbackandforthonkeepingtheminachart,butultimatelydecidedtogivethemasecondchance.Wedidthisforonedaywhilewetalkedaboutcharacterization.Theynextday,whentheyhadaquiz,abouthalfofthemcalledmeovertotellmethatwehad"nevergoneoverthis"whenitwasjustthattheyweresittingbytheirfriendsandnotpayingattention.Ihaven'tgradedthequizzesyet,butIamnotlookingforwardtoseeinghowmuchthedistractionimpactedtheirgrades.We'lldefinitelybebacktoaseatingchartonMondayIamjustdisappointedthatreteachingthisskillcouldhavebeenavoidedifIhadstucktomyguns.

ThisweekIbegantophaseoutintheclasses.The9thgradersroundedouttheirunitonliteraryelementsandtooktheirfinalassessmentonThursdayandFriday.The12thgradecompositionstudentsstartedaunitwithMs.Kelleronhowtomoresuccessfullywritealiteraryanalysisandrealizingtheyneededsomeexplicitinstruction.The11thand12thgradersfinishedtheir5paragraphessaywritingassignmentandcontinuedwithreadingDivergent.Istillhadcompletecontrolinthe9thgradeclassandbeganphasingouttojusttroubleshootingandredirectingstudentsinComp.and11/12bytheendoftheweek.
2.Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallengingexperiences?
Mymostsatisfyingexperiencewasgradingthefirstpartofthe9thgradeEnglishtest.Over90%ofthestudentsscoredan85%orabove.Itwasreallygratifyingtoseehowstudentsimprovedandtoknowthattheynotjustgotthematerial,butthatastrongmajorityofthemhadmasteredit.ItwasalsoabitofareliefasconfidentasIaminmyinstruction,therewasstillsomepieceofdoubtthatsaid,"WhatifIdidn'tteachthiswellenoughandMs.KellerhastogobackandreteachallofthisassoonasIleave?"Thankfully,thatwon'tbehappening:)Mymostchallengingexperiencewaswiththesame9thgradeclass.Priortothefinaltest,wetookaquizthatseveralstudents(tousetheirterm)totallybombed.IgavethemuntilWednesdayafterschooltocontactmeaboutamakeup,asIdidn'twantthemtotakebetakingtheirfinaltestandthenthequiz.Outof12studentswhogotunderaC,only2cameintomakeupthequiz.Itwasextrafrustratingbecause,despitemyrepeatedwarningsandposteddatesintheclassroom,Istillhadstudentsasktomakeuptheirquizafterthetimehadpassed.IspokewithMs.Kelleraboutthisfrustrationandsheagreedthatitwasunfortunate,butnotmuchcanbedone.Ireallywantmystudentstobesuccessful,buttheyneedtolearnthattheyhavearesponsibilityintheirlearningtoo,andtheyneedtostepuptotheplate.
