Student Safety is our First Priority

It is a normal reaction after hearing about tragedies and loss of life to question whether you are doing

everything to keep those you care about safe. Based on the recent and scary incident in Las Vegas

and the lockdown at Niles West High School, I wanted to review the procedures we have in place to

keep our students and staff safe here at Culver.

First and foremost, we have a comprehensive Emergency Plan and Procedures that are reviewed

annually with the Niles Police and Fire Departments. This plan is reviewed by the administrative team

prior to the beginning of school. Safety plans are discussed with staff early in the year and each

classroom has a binder outlining all emergency protocols. Our staff practices safety procedures with

students so that they are equipped with the knowledge of what to do in a specific emergency. In turn,

the entire school prepares for different emergencies by participating in specific emergency drills (for

example: fire drills, tornado drills, lockdown drills, and earthquake drills). Our first drills are announced

and done to make sure that everyone knows what to do and reduce any anxiety that our students may

have regarding these drills. Additionally, we let all of our students know that every adult in the school

building should be wearing an identification badge and if they see someone without one they are to let

their teacher know. As you are aware, all of the doors are locked and all visitors must check into the

office.

Please support our work with preparation drills by talking to your child by talking to them about safety

drills and why these are done in school. Also, it is imperative that we have the correct information for

you and your emergency contacts in the event that we need to call you, so please contact the front

office if changes need to be made to this information. If you have any questions regarding any of the

safety procedures please feel free to contact Mrs. Maniscalco at 847-966-9280 or pmaniscalco@

Director of Student Services: Ms. Laura Guarraci

Changes in District Assessments This year, we will have LESS TESTING for our 2nd

through 8th grade students. We are giving our

students more days of instruction by reducing the

amount of testing that we require as a district. The

change is regarding the Measures of Academic

Progress, or MAP, test that was given to all students

in the fall and the spring and to select students in the

winter. Beginning this year, only the 2nd through 7th

grade students will take the MAP test in May. We will

continue to review students’ performance for growth

through the spring MAP test on an annual basis as

well as through the AIMSweb Curriculum Based

Measures, or CBMs, that will continue to be taken in

the fall, winter and spring of each year and the state

required PARCC test that is administered in the early

spring.

Time to Play! Time to run and play is critical in

early childhood development! We

had a fun-filled opening for the

new playground as the preschool

students climbed, spun and hung

(from the vertical ladder) around!

In the next week, we will have

even more for the students as we

add 9 tricycles, chalk, bubbles

and balls to the playground area.

It is a great use of the space and

we are overjoyed at the amount of

smiles that come from this new

addition.

Social Emotional Learning We are excited to announce the addition of Second Step to our programming in kindergarten through 8th grade. Second Step is a research-based social emotional learning program that addresses emotion management, situational awareness and academic achievement. The program will be implemented school-wide by the end of the first quarter, and the lessons will be taught by your child(ren)’s teacher(s). The decision to adopt Second Step was made by the social emotional learning committee at the end of last year after reviewing multiple programs. The Second Step program in the middle school will compliment the already existing Advisory program.

financial assistance!

The Smile Program has been servicing schools, and creating healthy

smiles, for over 18 years. All dentists are state licensed and will conduct a

complete dental exam. Signing up your children to see the mobile dental

Please consider taking advantage of the at school dental services for

preventive services for your child. Permissions slips can be obtained from

school. If you would like to have your child seen by the SMILES dentists,

Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff and Students,

Every year we try to ensure that the school population stays as healthy as possible throughout the year. School is in full swing and we want to be aware of spreading germs. Because children and staff work closely together, there is an increased risk for spreading germs. Children have less mature immune systems and they may be more likely to become ill from germs. Hygiene practices are very important in preventing illness. Please remind your children that when coughing or sneezing to cover the mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not hand) when a tissue is unavailable. Teach your children to wash their hands frequently and please do not send them to school when they are ill.

Please observe your child carefully each day before sending him/her to school. Do not send him/her if there any signs or symptoms of illness or infection. If your child has a temperature above 100 degrees; a cold with symptoms that include sore throat, earache, persistent coughing and excessively runny nose; reddened eyes; nausea and/or vomiting; diarrhea; or unexplained rash they may not be sent to school. Students need to remain home until free of illness signs and symptoms without medication for 24 hours or, if necessary, until cleared by a healthcare provider. Return to school may require a note from a physician.

Parents must report a diagnosis of contagious disease. Illnesses including but not limited to, meningitis, hepatitis, chickenpox (varicella), measles, mumps, rubella, pink eye (conjunctivitis), mononucleosis, streptococcal infection (strep throat/scarlet fever), fifth disease (parovirus), influenza, impetigo, norovirus, and pertussis must be reported immediately to the school nurse. A student with a diagnosed contagious illness must remain away from school and a note from a physician stating the date they may return to school must be submitted to school.

When your child will be absent from school for illness or other reasons, please remember to phone in the student’s absence by 8:15 AM on the morning of the absence to the attendance phone line at 847-966-9280 extension 5000. Alternatively, you may email the absence to [email protected]. Please be sure to report the following details:

student’s name (please spell )

student’s grade and homeroom

reason for absence including signs and symptoms of illness

name of parent /guardian reporting illness

phone number at which parent / guardian may be reached

Lastly, The World Health Organization (WHO) has regularly promoted hand washing as one of the most effective methods for reducing transmission of food and airborne illnesses caused by germs. At school, we are encouraging students and staff to wash their hands before food preparation, before and after eating, after toileting, after coughing/sneezing, and after handling unsanitary objects such as garbage and/or soiled items. It is very important that when washing hands that one takes at least 20 seconds to vigorously rub all surfaces of the hands and wrists (in the time it takes to say or sing the alphabet). Please view the video demonstration of hand washing at: http://www.chla.org/blog/rn-remedies/whistle-while-you-wash-proper-hand-washing-technique.

Thank you for your efforts in helping to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.. Please do not hesitate to call the school health office at 847-966-9280 extension 1118 with any question.

Red Ribbon Week celebrates the memory of a law officer who was dedicated to helping communities that were affected by substance abuse. During Red Ribbon Week students and their families are encouraged to engage in discussions about living drug and alcohol free and about making healthy lifestyle choices. Activities scheduled at school from October 23 -27, 2017 are designed to help students understand the importance of making positive choices that promote physical and emotional health.

Families and schools are instrumental in supporting student overall health. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) suggests that parents can be proactive in helping their children make good choices and stay drug free:

Talk with your children about drugs. Explain how taking drugs can hurt their health, their friends and family and their future. Discussions should be age appropriate and can be initiated at any age. Please see the below listed references about talking to to children at different ages about drugs.

Be a part of their lives. Spend time together. Even when times are hard, kids can make it when they know that the adults in their life care about them.

Know where your children are and what they're doing. Keeping track of your children helps you protect them.

Set clear rules and enforce them fairly. Kids need rules they can count on. That is how they learn for themselves what is safe and what can get them in trouble.

Be a good example for your children. You might not think so, but kids look up to their parents. Show how you get along with people and deal with stress, so they can learn how to do it.

Teach your children how to refuse drugs. Kids often do drugs just to fit in with the other kids. Help them practice how to say no if someone offers them drugs.

Make your home safe. Do not have people in the house who abuse drugs and alcohol. Keep track of medicines and cleaning products

Lice is a common occurrence in school. From the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , “In the United States, infestation with head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) is most common among preschool- and elementary school-age children and their household members and caretakers. Head lice are not known to transmit dis-ease.” The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that “Having head lice does not mean you are dirty. Most people get head lice when they have head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice. Head-to-head contact lets the lice crawl from one head to another head. The lice do not care whether the person has squeaky-clean hair or dirty hair. The lice are looking for human blood, which they need to survive.” Head lice may also be transferred from shared clothing or belongings onto which lice have crawled or nits attached to shed hairs may have fallen, though this is much less common.

The CDC provides these guidelines to prevent and control the lice infestation. Additionally, children should be taught to avoid activities that spread head lice:

Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).

Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes.

Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5-10 minutes.

Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person.

Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.

Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid re-infestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.

Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin

As a precaution, all parents should spend at least fifteen minutes every week checking school aged children for lice. If you find lice or active nits (eggs), please consult your healthcare provider about safe lice treatment options and recommendations. If you are uncertain if your child has lice, your healthcare provider can determine if your child has lice or active nits. Lice spread easily and are a nuisance but they are not dangerous. They do not spread disease. Prevention and early detection/treatment of lice are essential to controlling infestations. Removal of lice and nits is important in control of infestation and reinfestation. For more information about lice prevention, detection and treatment please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Academy of Dermatology (ADD), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) websites listed below.

Announcing the

Return of

Artsonia

Dear Grades 1- 6 Parents,

During the month of October you will receive an email from Artsonia, an online

art gallery for students. Artsonia is a fantastic tool for art teachers and a fun way for

you, as a parent, to view the artwork your child creates in school throughout the year.

In the email, Artsonia will ask you to grant parent permission for your child to

participate. With your permission, I will be able to upload images of your child’s

artwork to our gallery for you to share with family and friends. You will also be given

the information you need to access your child’s personal art gallery. Additionally, you

will be able to purchase precious keepsakes featuring your child’s artwork through the

Artsonia Gift Shop.

Making purchases through Artsonia is entirely optional. If you are interested in

ordering custom gifts, please note that 20% of the proceeds from your purchases

comes back to Culver School. While Artsonia does provide this fundraising option, you

may choose to enjoy the site solely as a way to share your child’s artwork with family

and friends through their own personal, online art gallery page. I hope you will sign up

with our Culver Artsonia site by giving your parent permission. I look forward to

adding your child’s artwork to our already impressive Culver Art Gallery. Thanks!

The Niles 71 website now features a resources page! As we teach our children to ask for help when they need it, we also encourage families to ask for help when they need it. To support our mission of developing the whole child, Niles 71 is providing a list of resources for parents to access as needed. On this page we are highlighting community resources that may be useful to our families. Included in this list of resources are:

Basic Needs

Financial

Mental health

Language

Health

Multi-needs resources If you have any questions about these resources or need additional resource information please contact: Kathy Morrissey, School Nurse, Linda Kraus, School Social Worker, or Liz Lawrence, School Psychologist.

These links are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement or an approval by Niles Elementary District 71.

Every year PTA collects Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup Labels. Last year we raised money for Culver School on those tiny icons

on many of your favorite foods. At home, clip the Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup Labels. Please send them to school with your

child and we will take care of the rest. Did you know that Goldfish Crackers are part of the Campbell’s Soup Label family? Next

time before you put that package in the trash or recycling bin, check to see if it has a Box Top or Campbell Soup Label on it.

Those points add up to FREE $$$ for our school.
