On the rise

Graduating from college is more than a personal accomplishment. For some extraordinary low-income students in the Bay Area, it means overcoming incredible odds to change the future for good—for themselves, for their families, and for the whole community.

Students Rising Above provides a solid foundation of support to ensure students' success through college and beyond. Our graduates head out into the world and become doctors, engineers, lawyers, Peace Corps volunteers, and teachers. They reach out to others in turn, and their actions create a ripple-effect of support that benefits us all.

The foundation of support for SRA's innovative programs has grown year after year. As a result, in 2007-2008 we increased the number of students selected into our program by 75%, and we saw our highest number of graduates to date.

We’re excited about our future. And we invite you to be a part of it by joining our community of volunteers, donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors who are making a difference in the lives of our remarkable students. Together, we are changing lives in ways we are just beginning to imagine.

There are days that I remember more clearly than others. There was the night sleeping on the steps of the post office, watching my dad do jumping jacks to stay warm in the snow. There was the night that my dad was held at gunpoint after one of his drug deals had gone bad. Most clearly, there was the night when my dad gave up raising me. SRA gave me the opportunity to live without having to worry about surviving.

On the rise

Each SRA student has shown a determination to break the cycle of poverty in his or her family and to create a brighter future. Students partner with SRA by committing to academic excellence, graduating from college, and giving back to the community.

DeterminationKimberly graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Social Welfare and an English minor. She is attending University of San Francisco School of Law.

At five years of age, I watched my mother's murder. My brothers and I were put into the home of an abusive alcoholic relative. At age eleven, I packed up my little brothers and we fled in the middle of the night to a relative who took us in. There was not much money and an ironclad rule that we were to study. And study we did.

On the riseSuccess

SRA students earn four-year college degrees, pursue post-graduate study, embark on successful careers, and give back to their communities as contributors and role models.

My mother's antics made her the classic neighborhood drug addict that everyone laughed at. Because of her, everyone made fun of me—making it harder for me to make friends. I became more of a follower, seeking the approval of the very people who rejected me.

”Stevon Cook

Stevon graduated from Williams College and was recently selected into the prestigious San Francisco City Hall Fellows program.

Fulfilling DreamsSRA's mission is to help extraordinary, low-income Bay Area high school students who are overcoming tremendous odds of poverty, homelessness, and neglect, to fulfill their dreams of a college education. We provide the mentoring, financial assistance, and employment skills to be successful in school and in life.

Living Up to Our BeginningsFounded in 1998 by news anchor Wendy Tokuda, and Community Relations Manager Javier Valencia, SRA began as a scholarship program supporting outstanding Bay Area students who were “beating the odds.” Students selected into our program are usually the first in their families to go to college, and they lack the financial resources and family support to fulfill their educational dreams.

Today, this Peabody and Emmy award-winning program has grown into an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with broad community support. Our diverse student body includes some of the best and brightest who attend many of the finest universities across the United States, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, and Harvard.

Across the country, graduation rates in four-year colleges reflect few students with both low-income and first-generation backgrounds.

SRA is dedicated to changing these statistics in the Bay Area.

11

The SRA Model

the SRA difference: A Full Range of Support

As national graduation statistics reveal, it is not enough just to provide college access to low-income students

who are the first in their families to attend college.

The SRA model of support consists of eight distinct facets working in concert to deliver academic

guidance, mentoring, financial support, job placement, healthcare, and fundamental social readiness.

This programmatic approach is the key to effectively raising graduation rates, increasing job placement, and

expanding the beneficial impact our students have on our communities.

Selecting Extraordinary Students SRA identifies high school juniors through an extensive Bay Area outreach process conducted by SRA staff, volunteers, and graduates who have years of experience selecting students who can succeed. SRA selects a special type of student—one with the potential for success, but limited by his or her economic and social circumstances.

Student Commitment As part of the SRA community, students commit to academic performance and graduation, serve as program ambassadors and peer mentors, complete workshops to ensure college readiness, participate in their own support through outside scholarships, student loans, work study, and summer employment, and join our alumni program upon graduation. They commit to their own success, and the success of those who come after them.

Pre-College Readiness SRA provides students with SAT prep courses, group workshops, and one-on-one assistance in completing a competitive college application. We also help with the college acceptance and registration process.

Off-to-College SeminarsTo prepare our students for a smooth transition to college, we conduct Off-to-College seminars prior to freshman year, which include information on what to expect at college, preparation for academic and social adjustments, and coaching on study and social skills.

SRA AdvisorsOur students have exceptional potential but they lack the support they need to thrive. Our advisors play a critical role in guiding, nurturing, and encouraging students from the moment they are selected as high school juniors until they graduate from college.SRA advisors are the foundation of our program and they are the key to our students’ high graduation rates.

Tuition and Financial SupportSRA counsels students on how to maximize financial aid and obtain competitive scholarships. SRA then pays expenses not otherwise covered by this aid, student loans, work-study, or summer employment. By helping our students to effectively leverage financial aid and scholarships, SRA is able to focus its resources towards meeting critical student needs such as living expenses, medical insurance, books, and computers.

5.

8. Summer Jobs & EducationSummer is historically one of the most challenging times of the year for our students. Many of them are homeless or simply should not or cannot return to their old neighborhoods.SRA works with organizations in our community to identify paid summer jobs that enable students to afford safe housing and help them build employment skills. Advisors also assist students in identifying coursework to be completed through summer school, and help them locate appropriate low-cost summer housing.

7. Medical and Dental CareThe majority of students entering our program have rarely seen a doctor or dentist. As a result, many of our students come to us with serious medical and dental problems. In order to address these needs, SRA enrolls its students in government medical assistance programs, educates them on proper healthcare, and relies on its network of healthcare providers and volunteers to provide necessary care.

Barb Hendricks Barb began her association with SRA in 2002, after being inspired by her daughter’s friend who came from a challenging childhood background and who desperately wanted to go to college. This bright and motivated young man received a SRA scholarship, which sparked Barb’s involvement in the organization. Aided by a group of dedicated volunteers, Barb helped to transition SRA from a project of KRON 4 into an independent non-profit organization. Barb served as the President of the Board of Directors of SRA for three years, and in 2006 she assumed the role of Director of Student Programs where she oversees SRA’s team of Advisors. Barb has had a long and established track record of success in the insurance industry as Sales and Marketing Director for Scarborough Insurance Agency, and has owned and operated her own business, RFP Benefits for 16 years. Barb earned her Bachelors degree in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley.Director of Student Programs; 2005 – Present

Lynne MartinHired in 2004 as the first Executive Director of Students Rising Above, Lynne Martin brings a strong background in the business and philanthropic worlds. Prior to taking on the role of Executive Director, Lynne served on the organization’s Board of Directors and was Vice President of Corporate Services for LawCommerce, an internet start-up eventually sold to LexisNexis. Previously, Lynne served for 13 years with the international executive search firm, Boyden, where she was one of only five women partners and responsible for developing and completing retained searches for senior executives for Fortune 500 companies. Lynne is a graduate of UC Berkeley, where she earned her B.A. in Economics. She is an active volunteer in her community, having served on numerous educational, leadership, and philanthropic boards. Lynne also co-founded the College Bound Network, a consortium of Bay Area organizations committed to ensuring college access for Bay Area youth.
