Welcome to the Job Shadow ProgramWelcome to the Job Shadow Program

This self-guided program will take you through all of the steps you’ll need to complete a successful Job Shadow experience.

You will:– complete a research profile which examines you and your

chosen occupation– have your teacher or counsellor help you to identify a good

role model from the workplace– be prepared to ask your role model some key questions

about the occupation– be prepared to make the most of your Job Shadow

observations– be guided through all the steps from preparation to follow-

up.

There are four main steps in the Job Shadow program:

1. Complete The Research Profile

2. Assemble Job Shadow Application Package

3. Job Shadow Placement

4. Follow-up

You will follow each step in sequence to complete the program.

Click the “List of Activities” button on the left for a checklist of all activities in the Job Shadow program. This will open a Microsoft Word document which you need to print. Check off each activity as you complete it.

1. Complete The Research Profile Document

1.1 Self Evaluation - Values

Use the Research Profile document to make a list of the things you value. Helping people, working with technology, personal freedom and independence, adventure, or constant change are examples. To see a student sample click on the “Hints” button.

To help you feel confident about the interview with your role model, you have been provided a list of questions. You need to read the questions, the hints and prompts in order to be fully prepared.

1. Obtain Parental Consent

The Parent Consent Form requires your parents or guardians to give permission for the Job Shadow experience and to accept responsibility for your transportation to and from the job site. A copy of the Parent Consent Form is available from your teacher/counsellor. Once you have obtained a copy of this form, have your parent or guardian sign the form and include it in the Job Shadow Application Package.

2. Write A Letter of Introduction

The Introductory Letter is your opportunity to convince the role model that the time and energy arranging your Job Shadow will be well spent. It must explain your reasons for choosing the occupation. As well, it should communicate your desire to interview the role model during the Job Shadow.

3. Complete The Job Shadow Request Form

Include the Job Shadow Request Form as part of the Job Shadow Application Package.

6. Submit The Job Shadow Application Package

Submit the Job Shadow Application Package to your teacher/counsellor in the following order:

1. Job Shadow Request Form

2. Research Profile

3. Letter of Introduction To Your Role Model

4. Parent Consent Form

5. Interview Questions - Role Model’s Copy

Your teacher/counsellor will check the documents for accuracy

and quality.

Do not proceed further until you are given permission to do so.

Part C: Part C: Job Shadow PlacementJob Shadow Placement

The teacher/counsellor will arrange to make the initial contact with your potential role model.

You will be notified by your teacher/counsellor when the role model has been identified and contacted. At that time you begin the activities for the Job Shadow Placement.

After submitting the Job Shadow Package to your teacher/counsellor, it will be reviewed and the following items will be returned to you:

• your Letter of Introduction

• the list of questions

When they are returned to you, you will also be given information on your placement, and provided with the

• Field Trip Supervision Consent Letter

Assemble these 3 items for faxing or mailing to the Role Model.

2. Fax or Mail The Role Model Package

Fax or mail the Role Model Package to the Role Model.

A copy of this supervision consent form will need to be signed by the Role Model and returned to the school prior to the Job Shadowing experience occurring. Note: At your school, this package may be faxed or mailed for you by the school staff.

3. Confirm The Job Shadow Appointment

After receiving your Job Shadow Placement, call the role model to confirm your appointment. This is a sample of the conversation:

Hello my name is _________. I am a student of ______ High School. I am phoning to confirm a Job Shadowing appointment with __________ . Did you receive my letter of introduction and information package? What date and time would be most convenient for this Job Shadowing experience? Any specific instructions for getting there? Parking? Thank you for your time and I look forward to meeting you.

4. Notify The School Of Your Job Shadow Experience

A copy of the “Notice of Absence for Job Shadowing” form is available from the teacher/counsellor. This form is used to notify all of the teachers in your other classes of your absence while Job Shadowing. Once you have obtained a copy of this form, fill in all of the required information and return it to the teacher/counsellor.

In addition to filling out the “Notice of Absence for Job Shadowing” form, it is important that you tell each of your teachers that you will be away during the period of your Job Shadowing experience.

5. Attend The Job Shadow Experience

In order to be fully prepared for a successful Job Shadow experience, there are a number of things you need to do first :

a) Click on, print and read the “Reminders” button for a detailed list.

b) Click on, print and read “My Interview Questions.”

c) Click on the “Research Interview Video” button for advice on

handling the Role Model interview during the observation.

1. Write A Thank You Letter To Your Role Model

Having completed your Job Shadow, you will now write your role model a letter expressing your appreciation for the experience. It should explain how the information obtained has affected your understanding of the occupation and how it will influence you in your career planning in the future.

Click the “Thank You Letter” button to begin writing your letter.

Be sure to proof read and sign the letter before you submit it!

Address and stamp an envelope to the role model of your Job Shadow. Do not seal the envelope at this time.

Career development is about growing through life and work: it’s about learning, experiencing, living and working. It’s is about actively creating and shaping the life you want to live and the work you want to do.

Job Shadowing allows you to “test drive” the work you want to do. Ensuring the decisions you make are based upon solid information from people with real experiences rather than assumptions and possible misconceptions.
