1. Introduction to the Programme 1.1 Welcome from your Dean of School

I would like to wish you a warm welcome to the University of Central Lancashire’s School of Journalism, Language and Communication. We’re delighted that you have chosen to study here with us and we look forward to working with you over the coming year and beyond. The start of any new academic year or a new term is an exciting time and a chance for you to renew your enthusiasm for your specialist subject and to reflect on how you can get the best out of your time at University – of course, there are plenty of people on hand to help you with this.

We are proud of the research members of the teaching team undertake, some of which has been ranked higher than both that of Cambridge and Oxford universities. As you go through your studies you will become familiar with some of this via your classroom sessions and tutorials. Staff in the School are also recognised as Fellows in the national Higher Education Academy. We have a list of national and institutional award winners for our work with student support and curriculum development. We constantly strive to improve the quality of the courses we offer and to enhance the experience of our students; we value the feedback we get from you, employers, our business partners and our alumni which helps us to ensure that you have a course which is current, relevant and of the highest quality.

As you work with us, you will find the School of Journalism, Language and Communication is a thriving learning community which offers a range of innovative courses in journalism, languages, and intercultural communication which equips you with up-to-date knowledge of your specialism alongside real-world skills you can use to help you get ahead in the world of work. We are also involved in many exciting projects, and work with partner institutions around the world and regularly offer visits, internships and placement opportunities to our students.

This Handbook contains important advice and reference material intended to help you understand what happens on your course and in the School, and to help you learn and develop good study practices – regardless of what year or level of study you are entering. A major purpose of the Handbook is to introduce you to the kind of learning experience you can expect during your time here. For example, we explain our approach to learning and teaching, the learning outcomes you should be able to demonstrate, and regulations on assessment. There is also detailed information on the content of each individual module and some general guidance on how to approach your studies here.

You might find that the way we do things here is different in some respects to your previous experiences in educational institutions. You should therefore read through the Handbook now and keep it in a safe place for reference throughout your studies. You will also be able to retrieve updated versions of the information in the Handbook electronically throughout the course on your course webpages or your virtual learning environment.

Here in the School of Journalism, Language and Communication, we are a multinational team comprising support staff, lecturers, language assistants, researchers and in excess of 1000 students from about 30 countries. We encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities available to develop a global perspective on life which will stand you in good stead for your career. You’ll find that there are a lot of academic and social activities

organised in the School which are aimed at motivating you to develop this perspective. You should remember that the benefit you derive from your study and social programme in Preston depends very much on the amount of effort you put into them. If you would like to build up the kind of additional experience which employers look for and have something interesting and different to put on your CV, now is the time to start. Your personal advisor or Academic Advisor can help you plan out goals at the start of each year to make sure that you have a CV and skills set which stands out.

We'd rather you thought of yourself as an active working member of the School community than simply a student. To be truly effective, Higher Education has to be a participative process, and your input in teaching sessions, your debates with your peers and lecturers are examples of how you can co-create knowledge and work collaboratively with your lectures. Staff in the School will provide the infrastructure, shape the process and tell you how you’re doing, but the only person who can learn and succeed is you!

THE PROGRAMME

The programme team would like to extend a warm and friendly welcome, and sincerely hope that you enjoy studying here with us at the University of Central Lancashire.

The BA (Hons) English Language, Literature and Creative Writing (Foundation Entry) programme is based in the School of Language, Literature and International Studies, which is located in the Adelphi Building and the Harington Building. The School of Language, Literature and International Studies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences are also the home for the various honours degree programmes to which you have been admitted.

Later in the year, you will be asked to confirm your wish to continue on the particular honours degree course to which you have been admitted, and may also have the opportunity to change target course, if you wish, subject to passing certain subject modules.

Your immediate priority should be to familiarise yourself with the places that will be of importance to you. An important point of contact throughout your time here is the School Hub in CN235 (Computing and Technology Building). This Hub is responsible for all the courses and students that belong to the School of Language, Literature and International Studies.

You should also familiarise yourself with the location of your tutors’ offices and your lecture and seminar rooms. Tutors’ rooms are listed in item 1.3 of this handbook and your individual teaching rooms will be available on your timetable. Your timetable is available electronically through the Student Portal. The compulsory modules will automatically be included on your timetable and your choice of optional modules will be included once you have completed the relevant paperwork.

1.2 RATIONALE, AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSES

The programme provides a structured and supported process developing skills for further study and career development. Therefore students will achieve general aims and objectives in accordance with other university programmes.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The BA (Hons) English Language, Literature and Creative Writing (Foundation Entry) Programme aims are:

• To provide the opportunity to enter Higher Education to learners who are motivated to do so, but have not so far achieved a level of qualification sufficient for confident progression to level 4 study.

• To provide the opportunity to enter Higher Education to groups traditionally under-represented in UK higher education.

• To provide the opportunity to enter Higher Education for those adults who have not had the opportunity to progress through formal education.

• To introduce learners to a range of generic study skills related to learning formally and independently in higher education

• To enable students to develop general knowledge, skills and experience to support their contribution to society, employability and life-long learning

• To provide a structured and supported process for students to reflect upon their own learning, performance and achievement to plan for their personal educational and career development.

• To introduce learners to subject and career pathways, and subject-specific skills, in order to enable them to make informed decisions about their programme of study at level 4 and beyond.

On completion of this programme students will have developed a wide range of skills, including: Knowledge and Understanding, Subject Specific Skills, Thinking Skills and Employability and Personal Development Skills.

Knowledge and Understanding

Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• Demonstrate an understanding of and critical engagement with, a variety of primary and secondary sources.

• Evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems related to their work as students.

• Communicate the results of their study/work accurately and reliably in writing, with structured and coherent arguments

• Demonstrate basic skills of independent learning and research, including the ability to identify, and evaluate relevant primary and secondary source materials

• Demonstrate reflective decision making in planning for the next stage of their degree course.

Employability and Personal Development Skills

Students will be able to:

• Work independently, or with limited guidance, where appropriate

• Make personal, educational and career action plans to support future development • Demonstrate basic transferable skills necessary for employability and personal development

1.3 Course Team

THE COURSE TEAM

The Foundation Entry team consists consists primarily of staff based within the School of Language, Literature and International Studies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Your main points of contact are the Foundation Entry Programme Leader, Ed Griffiths, the Course Leader for your target award honours degree course, your Academic Advisor (see below), the various Module Leaders, and the administrative staff.

You will come into contact with additional members of staff as you progress, particularly those relating to your chosen honours degree programme, but the Foundation Entry Team will still be your main point of contact throughout this year. Each member of the team has specific roles which are outlined below and in Item 4, and will be discussed further during your induction week.

1.4 Academic Advisor Your Academic Advisor will be an academic member of the Foundation Entry team, who in addition to your Course Leader will advise you on your progress and provide you with individual support in relation to your academic performance. S/he can provide you with guidance on your learning, as well as information about where to go for any additional and specialist help and advice you might need, for example study skills, careers, personal counselling, etc. You will be allocated a named Academic Advisor at the start and for the duration of your course.

1.5 Administration Hub Campus Admin Services provides academic administration support for students and staff and are located at Hub CM235 in the Computing and Technology Building and is open from 8.45am until 5.15pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.00pm on Fridays. The hub can provide general assistance and advice regarding specific processes such as extenuating circumstances, extensions and appeals. Course specific information is also available via school Blackboard sites.

1.6 Communication Communication between the University, staff and students is imperative. The following outlines forms of communication that are provided and should be used. Furthermore your familiarisation with them will enable you to settle into your course and the University with ease.

a. Student Handbook

This handbook provides much of the essential information you need. It explains the structure of the degree programme and demonstrates what is core and optional for you to complete in order to be considered for the award of BA (Hons) English Language, Literature and Creative Writing (Foundation Entry). It is advisable to read all the sections of this handbook at the time you commence your course as it contains essential information and advice about how you will successfully complete your degree programme.

b. Course Notice Board

For the Language, Literature and Creative Writing modules this can be found on the second floor of the Harrington Building close to the offices of the team members.

c. Email

The University expects you to use your UCLan email address and check regularly for messages from staff. If you send us email messages from other addresses they risk being filtered out as potential spam and discarded unread.

This is the first point of urgent and other contact between you and your tutors. It may be that we need to change rooms, or postpone sessions. We may also text you if we have your contact details.

You can also contact us by email (see ‘Meet the Team’), however as staff are teaching and have other commitments you may not receive an immediate response. Please do not expect a response after 5.30pm during the week or at weekends and allow 2 working days for a reply, or longer if the tutor is away from the University and you may have to contact someone else.

Tutor office hours

Teaching staff in the School of Language, Literature and International Studies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences generally have 'Office Hours', that is, published times of their availability. These are displayed on their doors, so ensure that you are familiar with them. These hours are times that staff reserve for student contact and are provided so that can speak to your tutors on a one-to-one basis. As staff are teaching and have other commitments they may not be able to meet with you at any other time, so use these hours wisely.

Staff can also be contacted by email, however, again due to other commitments, please be aware that you may not receive an immediate response.

Student Portal and Blackboard

This is the page you will be automatically be sent to when you log in to the University network, giving you personalised access to your timetable, services, online resources, your academic record, news, etc. It also gives you access to Blackboard or eLearn, UCLan’s Virtual Learning Environment. Here you will find all the information you need regarding your modules, for example module handbooks, lecture notes, learning resources, reading lists etc. Staff may communicate information to you and you may be expected to contribute to discussion boards, so please check Blackboard regularly. You will also submit assignments electronically through Turnitin here. More about this will follow later in the handbook and at induction.

d. Induction information The induction week is designed to ensure you have smooth transition into University life. It is a key form of initial communication that will inform you of all the details you need to know regarding your programme and timetables etc. It also introduces you to University procedures and academic regulations, as well as having the opportunity to meet Academic Staff and current students as well as make new friends.

There are sessions during the induction week where you will have to absorb much information; there are also sessions that you will have to participate in. These are all extremely important to prepare you for teaching, learning and personal involvement on the programme.

1.7 External Examiner The University has appointed an External Examiner to your course who helps to ensure that the standards of your course are comparable to those provided at other higher education institutions in the UK. The name of this person, their position and home institution can be found below. If you wish to make contact with your External Examiner, you should do this through your Course Leader and not directly. External Examiner reports will be made available to you electronically. The School will also send a sample of student coursework to the external examiner(s) for external moderation purposes, once it has been marked and internally moderated by the course tutors. The sample will include work awarded the highest and lowest marks and awarded marks in the middle range.

2. Structure of the course

2.1 Overall structure

The BA (Hons) English Language, Literature and Creative Writing (Foundation Entry) programme forms the first stage of your four-year degree. Its structure is the same as all undergraduate programmes in that it is modular.

Courses at the University are divided into a number of different modules. Each module has its own subject matter, module tutor and assessment. You have to pass all the modules on the course before you can progress to the next stage.

The University of Central Lancashire has three basic sizes for modules:

standard module : 20 credits double module : 40 credits half module : 10 credits

In order to graduate, after four years of study, you need to have accumulated a total of 480 credits. You will normally take modules adding up to 120 credits in each year of full time study. Please note that some modules are core or compulsory, and others are optional. This means that you must study the core/compulsory module components but have a choice of which optional module(s) you may study. The University also offers students an opportunity to study an ‘elective’ module in years one and two, but these are not recommended at Foundation Entry level.

Each module has its own learning outcomes and assessments. This means there may be a number of different assessment elements such as assignments, exams, and presentations. These may be weighted differently. (For instance, a module may have an assignment worth 40%, a presentation worth 20% and an exam worth 40%.)

In order to pass the module you normally have to get 40% overall. In most modules, you also need to pass each element as well. It is important that you read the assessment rules for each module carefully.

Further particulars regarding your Foundation Entry programme will be discussed in detail at the induction events and by your Course Leader and Academic Advisor throughout your year of study.

The full list of options indicated may not all be delivered every year, and this may depend on how many students choose that particular option. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this course, you are accepting that not all of these options will be running. At (or before) the start of each year, you will have an opportunity to discuss your course and preferred options with your tutor. The University will do all it reasonably can to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options.

2.2.1 Progression Discussions about your progression into Year One of your chosen subject degree will normally take place in February each year. It is an opportunity for you to make plans for your study over the next academic year. The course team will tell you about the various modules / combinations available and you will both agree on the most appropriate (and legal) course of study for you.

2.3 Study Time

2.3.2 Expected hours of study The normal amount of work involved in achieving a successful outcome to your studies is to study for 10 hours per each credit you need to achieve – this includes attendance at UCLan and time spent in private study. Independent or private study is a major part of University life. Contact hours are where teaching, learning and support take place, and independent study time is where you develop your learning, prepare for lectures and seminars, read, conduct research and complete your assessments. Higher education timetables are structured to enable you to spend a great deal of time studying independently. The work you submit will be individual and your study time allows you to develop yourself fully. As an adult learner you must manage your own time. More importantly you must remember that if you are on a full time degree programme, you must study full time hours. You will not be successful if you do not undertake independent study.

2.3.3 Attendance Requirements You are required to attend all timetabled learning activities for each module. Students should report non-attendance to the hub email – [email protected] or by telephoning the hub on 01772 891994 or 01772 891995.

Your Course Leader will then be notified. If you have not gained the required authorisation for leave of absence; do not respond to communications from the University and if you are absent for four weeks or more, you may be deemed to have withdrawn from the course. If this is the case, then the date of withdrawal will be recorded as the last day of attendance. The University uses an electronic attendance system (SAM). You will be asked to sign in at sessions and the system will be updated to monitor your attendance. Each time you sign in you must remember that the University has a responsibility to keep information up to date and that you must only sign your own name. Any student who is found to make false entries can be disciplined under the student guide to regulations.

2.4 Data Protection All of the personal information obtained from you and other sources in connection with your studies at the University will be held securely and will be used by the University both during your course and after you leave the University for a variety of purposes. These are all explained during the enrolment process at the commencement of your studies. 3. Approaches to teaching and learning

3.1 Expertise of staff All our staff are research active and have made a significant contribution to pedagogic research and research in their own subject area within the School of Language, Literature and International Studies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Our teaching is research informed and as you progress with your course you will become familiar with tutor’s research interests.

3.2 Learning and teaching methods Teaching and learning strategies are designed to enable students to acquire subject specific knowledge, critical facility and transferable skills. In addition, strategies are employed which will enable students to achieve module specific outcomes as outlined in each of the module descriptions. You are expected to fully participate in these teaching and learning methods.

English Language and Linguistics, Literature and Creative Writing modules are taught primarily through a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with additional workshops and individual tutorial sessions. Lectures and/or seminars are interactive, and are supported by ‘Blackboard’. Learning is student centred and assessment will be based on coursework, academic essays, individual presentations, individual projects. Formative assessment will be a major focus throughout the programme facilitated through discussions and/or debates, self-reflection, peer interactive work, ICT chat/discussion boards and Personal Development Planning (PDP).

All our students have an academic adviser and staff time is particularly devoted to seeing students on an individual tutorial basis to supplement the teaching in lectures and seminars. An extensive stock of books, articles and documentary sources is available in the University library. This stock is supplemented by materials that tutors make available in class and by e-learning. Computing facilities are available in open access rooms, including use of word processing, a wide range of software packages, email and the Internet.

You will be required to prepare for lectures and seminars by reading specified texts, accessing information from sources; undertaking specific research, or taking part in activities on Blackboard etc. This is an important part of your programme to support and enhance your learning, therefore it is imperative that you fulfill all independent study as instructed by your tutors.

Your academic development will be assessed as you progress through the programme and discussions will take place with your Course Leader, Academic Advisor and Module Tutors.

3.3 Study skills The programme will equip you with the necessary skills required to begin your chosen degree programme. However, further assistance, if you require it (in your own time), is available to you through the following link https://portal.uclan.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp under ‘Organisation’

The university also offers support for your study skill though WISER.

WISER is an acronym for Walk-In Study Enhancement through Review AND Workshop Interactions for Study Enhancement and Review. This is because Wiser operate BOTH drop-in AND scheduled sessions.

The Drop-in service will benefit those students who want to learn more effectively and get better marks for their assignments and exams. Wiser can also help you with your personal development planning (PDP). The skills learnt can also form part of your PDP portfolio.

3.4 Learning resources

3.4.1 Learning Information Services (LIS) Extensive resources are available to support your studies provided by LIS – library and IT staff. Take advantage of the free training sessions as well as a range of others designed to enable you to gain all the skills you need for your research and study.

3.4.2 Electronic Resources LIS provide access to a huge range of electronic resources – e-journals and databases, e-books, images and texts.

Access to Computer Network:

The main area within the University for accessing the computer network is through the open access terminals on the third floor of the library. The first place to ask for help and advice is via the Help Desk on the first floor. There are also a number of rooms around the university which can be used by students at various times. Some are used for teaching or are reserved for specific subjects at particular times, but are available for general use at other times. Timetables are normally posted outside these rooms, showing availability. Details of their location can be found at the Helpdesk in the library.

Access to the library (LLRS) and the computer network is only available to students who have enrolled and collected their student ID card. Information sheets on accessing the network and using the university’s IT facilities are available during Induction Week and can also be found in the library entrance or from the Helpdesk on the first floor.

Blackboard

All resources e.g. power point presentations, lecture notes etc. utilised in the Programme are generally available via Blackboard. Your Course Leader and module tutors will discuss this further.

Access procedure for Blackboard

You can access the material for this course via the ‘Student Lobby’ icon at the top of the University home page.

You cannot save work in Blackboard, so you will need to either print it off or save the documents into Word/Power Point on your own drive.

Make the most of all the resources available to you. The library is an obvious place to start. You should learn to use the library effectively and use it to your full advantage. It is much more than a book storage facility as it provides comfortable, flexible study spaces and a wealth of excellent learning resources, extensive collections of information sources and expert help and support from Library staff. As well as access to thousands of books, audiovisual materials and journals, highlights include:

• Extensive opening hours A wide range of different study environments for both individual and group study including bookable study rooms and pods.

• Laptop loan scheme. • A large number of electronic resources which are available wherever you have

access to the internet. It is important that you learn how to find and use journal articles, as these represent the most up-to-date sources available to you.

Specific references to journal articles are included in module bibliographies, and further help in identifying useful journals can be obtained from individual module tutors. Further information on how to obtain passwords and access these resources is available from the library Helpdesk, or from the LLRS web pages at

• Media suite containing Apple Macs. • Self service issue and return facilities. • Open access PCs and wireless access throughout the building. • Café and vending machines.

3.5 Personal development planning

Throughout the year and on each module students will be encouraged to:

• develop skills of reflection on their academic, personal and professional development

Students are divided into Academic Advisor groups and will meet on a regular basis. This enables a structured tutorial programme to be coupled with ample opportunities for pastoral support as students make the transition to higher education.

3.6 Preparing for your Career

Your future is important to us, so to make sure that you achieve your full potential whilst at university and beyond, your course has been designed with employability learning integrated into it at every level. This is not extra to your degree, but an important part of it which will help you to show future employers just how valuable your degree is. These “Employability Essentials” take you on a journey of development that will help you to write your own personal story of your time at university:

• To begin with, you will explore your identity, your likes and dislikes, the things that are important to you and what you want to get out of life.

• Later, you will investigate a range of options including jobs and work experience, postgraduate study and self- employment,

• You will then be ready to learn how to successfully tackle the recruitment process.

You will be able to record your journey using Pebblepad, the university’s e-portfolio system, which will leave you with a permanent record of all the fantastic things you have achieved during your time at UCLan.

Student support, guidance and conduct The University provides a comprehensive support network, but it is not always clear who you should contact with specific queries or problems. For immediate support you should contact a member of the course team and the following is a basic guide (also refer to Section 1):

Module Leaders - For module specific issues these are the staff you contact first if you have any academic queries.

You will receive a handbook for each module which will include all information regarding that module.

Extended Course Essay Tutor The course leader, or another key academic staff member from your honours degree course, will work with you on the module ENC011 Extended Course Essay should you choose it as an option, and will be your contact throughout the year for matters related specifically to that course.

Academic Advisor - An academic member of staff who is allocated to you;

providing support with your studies, helping you understand what is expected of you as a student and directing you to relevant University support agencies as necessary. Your Academic Advisor will be available to listen to any concerns you have and then advise you as best they can on how to resolve them. As your Academic Advisor is an academic expert, they may need to refer you onto someone who has more experience of other areas where you may be having problems. The induction sessions will discuss this further, as well as allocating you your Academic Advisor (see 4.1 below).

Administrative support - The Hub for the School of Language, Literature and International Studies is located in CN235 in the Computing and Technology Building and for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in HB120 in the Harris Building. Any questions about the administrative way the course is organised should be made at these. The Hub is where you should go with questions about your student details, and for most forms. These include assignment cover sheets, extension forms, and so on. However, most of your administrative questions could be answered by checking on MyUclan first

4.1 Academic Advisors You will be allocated a Academic Advisor in induction week. See 4 above for the role of a Academic Advisor.

4.2 Student Support There is a centralised Student and Academic Support Service which has The 'i' Student Information Centre as its first point of contact. You can obtain information on a wide range of topics including student administration such as Council Tax and letters to verify your status. The ‘i’ can also direct you to the right place to find information on Scholarships, Counselling, Student Finance, Mentoring, Studying Abroad, Disability Advice, Independent Academic Advice, International Advice, Multi Faith Centre, Pre School Centre, Medical Centre and general life in Preston/Burnley. The ‘i’ also produces a Student Organiser for new students.

4.3 Students with disabilities If you have a disability that may affect your studies, please either contact the Disability Advisory Service - [email protected] - or let one of the course team know as soon as possible. With your agreement information will be passed on to the Disability Advisory Service. The University will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate your needs and to provide appropriate support for you to complete your study successfully. Where necessary, you will be asked for evidence to help identify appropriate adjustments.

4.4 Health and Safety As a student of the University you are responsible for the safety of yourself and for that of others around you. You must understand and follow all the regulations and safety codes

necessary for a safe campus environment. Please help to keep it safe by reporting any incidents, accidents or potentially unsafe situations to a member of staff as soon as possible. Safety assessments have been undertaken for each module of your course and you will be advised of all applicable safety codes and any specific safety issues during the induction to your course and modules. You must ensure that you understand and apply all necessary safety codes. These form an essential element of your personal development and contribute to the safety of others.

4.5 Conduct You will be expected to abide by the Regulations for the Conduct of Students in the University. UCLan expects you to behave in a respectful manner demonstrated by using appropriate language in class, and switching mobile phones / other devices off prior to attending classes. If your behaviour is considered to be unacceptable, any member of academic staff is able to issue an informal oral warning and the University will support staff by invoking formal procedures where necessary. 4.6 Students’ Union The Students’ Union is the representative body for all UCLan students. The organisation exists separately from the University and is led by the elected officers of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) as well as representatives on the Students’ Council. The Students’ Union building is located at the heart of the Preston campus, and is the hub for all student activities. Representation and campaigning for students’ rights is at the core of what we do and is encompassed by our tag line of, Making Life Better for Students. Should you wish to make a change to any aspect of your student experience, whether it be academically related or not, then the Union is where your voice can be heard, actions taken, or campaigns launched. Your Union is also the home to a fantastic range of student-led societies, sports teams and multitudes of volunteering opportunities. You can also receive help in finding part-time work, whilst you study. Not sure where to go pop into the Opportunities Centre on the ground floor of the Students’ Union building and someone will point you in the right direction. 5. Assessment Please note that all modules will be assessed. You are expected to attempt all required assessments for each module for which you are registered, and to do so at the times scheduled unless authorised extensions, special arrangements for disability, or extenuating circumstances allow you to defer your assessment.

5.1 Assessment Strategy There are different types of assessment, such as essays, projects, group seminar presentations, reviews, reports and some examinations.

5.2 Notification of assignments and examination arrangements There is a formal procedure for handing in assignments which all students must follow. Each individual module handbook will outline the requirements for assessment, including deadline dates and submission details. Please ensure you read these details carefully.

Coursework

You must submit your coursework assignments through Turnitin.

Assignments must not be handed to individual tutors or given in to the Administration Hub (see section 1.5 for contact details) unless you are specifically instructed to do so by the module tutor.

Using TurnitinUK

• Log in to Blackboard and enter the relevant module

• Locate the relevant TurnitinUK assignment icon and click on it.

• Click the submit button next to the assignment title in the inbox.

• Select file upload from the pull-down menu entitled ‘Submit a paper by’ (at the top of the submission box).

• Enter the submission title (title of assignment).

• Click the browse button and locate the file for submission on your computer.

• Click submit (top right-hand corner).

• The document you are submitting will be displayed. Check that you are submitting the correct piece of work! This must be the same as your paper submission!

• Click Yes, submit (Note: you can only submit a piece of work once!).

• A digital receipt will be displayed. You have successfully submitted your assignment.

Examinations and Seminar Presentations/assessed work

You will be provided with clear guidelines and schedules etc. for this type of assessment. If still unsure, please check your module handbooks or the relevant module tutor.

5.3 Referencing Referencing is a vital part of academic work and you will be expected to use it, moreover using the correct method for your chosen degree subject. This is taught in depth in the module HUC110 Essential Study Skills for Higher Education.

5.4 Confidential material As a student you have ethical and legal responsibilities to respect confidentiality and maintain the anonymity of individuals and organisations within your assignments. If unsure you must check with your module tutor.

5.5 Dealing with difficulties in meeting assessment deadlines Assignments must be submitted no later than the date on your assignment instructions / brief. If you anticipate that you will have difficulty in meeting assessment deadlines or you have missed or are likely to miss examinations/seminar presentations etc. you must report this at the earliest possible opportunity to specific module tutors and your course leader. Authorisation of the late submission of work requires written permission. The School with responsibility for your module will be authorised to give permission for one extension period of between 1 and 10 working days where evidence of circumstances has been accepted and where submission within this timescale would be reasonable taking into account those circumstances (Academic Regulations:G3). You should complete and submit an extension request form, with any supporting evidence, to your Administration Hub (see section 1.5 for contact details). Further information is available on the Student Portal at: https://www.uclan.ac.uk/students/study/examinations_and_awards/extenuating_circumstances.php Extensions can only be authorised by the Module Tutor. We aim to inform you of a decision about granting an extension within 1 working day of the receipt of the request. If you are unable to submit work within 10 working days after the submission date due to verifiable extenuating circumstances, you may submit a case for consideration in

accordance with the University’s Policies and Procedures on Extenuating Circumstances (Academic Regulations: and Assessment Handbook).

5.5.1 Extenuating circumstances Some students face significant events in their personal life that occur after their course has started, which have a greater impact on their studies than can be solved by the use of an extension. If this applies to you, the University is ready to support you both with regard to your course and your personal wellbeing through a process called Extenuating Circumstances (see Academic Regulations and Assessment Handbook). Normally extenuating circumstances will relate to a change in your circumstances since you commenced your course, which have had a significant, adverse effect on your studies. Everyday occurrences such as colds or known conditions such as hay-fever will not qualify unless the effects are unusually severe and this is corroborated by a medical note. The University does not look sympathetically on absences or delays caused by holiday commitments or by work commitments in the case of full-time students. The normal work commitments of part-time students would not constitute an extenuating circumstance. A disability or learning difficulty does not constitute an extenuating circumstance (see Academic Regulations). You can apply for extenuating circumstances online via myUCLan (this can be accessed as a Useful Tool link on the Student Portal home page of the UCLan website) or use the paper based system if your circumstances are such that you cannot access myUCLan. You must submit claims within specified deadlines and submit corroborating evidence to the Administration Hub (see section 1.5 for contact details). More information about deadlines and gaining access to envelopes is available from the ‘i’ website.

You will be expected to re-submit claims for extenuating circumstances for each assessment period. All evidence that is provided relating to extenuating circumstances will be treated in a sensitive and confidential manner. Supporting evidence will not be kept for longer than is necessary and will be destroyed shortly after the end of the current academic year. Further information about the submission process is available at: https://www.uclan.ac.uk/students/study/examinations_and_awards/extenuating_circumstance_submission.php In determining assessment recommendations, Assessment Boards will consider properly submitted claims from students who believe their performance has been adversely affected by extenuating circumstances. N.B. Assessment Boards are not permitted to alter individual assessment marks to take account of extenuating circumstances (Academic Regulations: G9 and Assessment Handbook).

5.5.2 Late submissions If you submit work late and unauthorised, a universal penalty will be applied in relation to your work:

• If you submit work within 5 working days following the published submission date you will obtain the minimum pass mark if 40%. Work submitted later than 5 working days after the published submission date will be awarded a mark of 0%.

• Unauthorised late submission at resubmission will automatically be awarded a mark of 0%.

5.6 Feedback Following Assessments UCLan is committed to giving you clear, legible and informative feedback for all your assessments (Academic Regulations). You are expected to review and reflect on your feedback and learn from each experience to improve your performance as you progress though the course. You will be provided with generic feedback for in-module formative and summative elements of assessment which contribute to a module within 15 working days of the scheduled submission or examination date. Generic feedback on end of module assessment will be made available within 15 days of publication of results. Feedback may be oral, written, posted on a website or other.

5.7 Cheating, plagiarism or collusion or re-presentation You are required to sign a declaration indicating that individual work submitted for an assessment is your own. If you attempt to influence the standard of the award you obtain through cheating, plagiarism or collusion, it will be considered as a serious academic and disciplinary offence as described within the Academic Regulations and the Assessment Handbook .

• Cheating is any deliberate attempt to deceive and covers a range of offences described in the Assessment Handbook.

• Plagiarism describes copying from the works of another person without suitably attributing the published or unpublished works of others. This means that all quotes, ideas, opinions, music and images should be acknowledged and referenced within your assignments.

• Collusion is an attempt to deceive the examiners by disguising the true authorship of an assignment by copying, or imitating in close detail another student’s work - this includes with the other student’s consent and also when 2 or more students divide the elements of an assignment amongst themselves and copy one another’s answers. It does not include the normal situation in which you learn from your peers and share ideas, as this generates the knowledge and understanding necessary for each individual to independently undertake an assignment; nor should it be confused with group work on an assignment which is specifically authorised in the assignment brief.

• Re-presentation is an attempt to gain credit twice for the same piece of work.

All assessments must be submitted through Turnitin. This software assists staff and students to detect plagiarism, collusion and re-presentation. See 5.2 for details. The process of investigation and penalties which will be applied can be reviewed in the Assessment Handbook. If an allegation is found to be proven then the appropriate penalty will be implemented: In the case of a single offence of cheating, plagiarism, collusion or re-presentation:

• the penalty will be 0% for the element of assessment, and an overall fail for the module.

• the plagiarised element of assessment must be resubmitted to the required standard and the mark for the module following resubmission will be restricted to the minimum pass mark of 40%.

• when it is detected for the first time on a resubmission for an already failed module, no further resubmission for the module will be permitted, and the appropriate fail grade will be awarded.

In the event of a repeat offence of cheating, plagiarism, collusion or re-presentation (irrespective of whether the repeat offence involves the same form of unfair means) on the same or any other module within the course:

• the appropriate penalty will be 0% for the module with no opportunity for re-assessment. This penalty does not preclude you being able to retake the module in a subsequent year.

The penalties will apply if you transfer from one UCLan course to another during your period of study and module credits gained on the former course are transferred to the current course. 5.8 Appeals against assessment board decisions If you consider that you have a reason to appeal against an assessment board decision, please bear in mind that your reasons must fall within the grounds specified in the University Academic Regulations: Section I. You cannot appeal simply because you disagree with the mark given. The specified grounds for appeal are:

1. that an Assessment Board has given insufficient weight to extenuating circumstances;

2. that the student’s academic performance has been adversely affected by extenuating circumstances which the student has, for good reason, been unable to make known to the Assessment Board;

3. that there has been a material administrative error at a stage of the examining process, or that some material irregularities have occurred;

4. that the assessment procedure and/or examinations have not been conducted in accordance with the approved regulations.

If you want to appeal, then you must do so within 14 days of your results being published. The onus is on you to find out your results and submit your appeal on time. 6. Course regulations

6.1 Course requirements You must complete the programme as specified in Section 2 of this handbook, course and module requirements and as per University Regulations. Further details and support will be provided in the induction, progression meetings and other events throughout the term of your course.

6.2 Classification of Awards The University publishes the principles underpinning the way in which awards and results are decided in Academic Regulations . Decisions about the overall classification of awards are made by Assessment Boards through the application of the academic and relevant course regulations.

7. Student voice You can play an important part in the process of improving the quality of this course through the feedback you give. In addition to the on-going discussion with the course team throughout the year, there are a range of mechanisms for you to feedback about your experience of teaching and learning. We aim to respond to your feedback and let you know of our plans for improvement. The Students Union can support you in voicing your opinion, provide on-going advice and support, and encourage your involvement in all feedback opportunities. They will be requesting that you complete the National Student Survey (during semester 2 for students in their final year of study) or the UCLan Student Survey (all other students). The Students’ Union and University work closely together to ensure that the student voice is heard in all matters of student-life. We encourage students to provide constructive feedback throughout their time at university, through course reps, surveys and any other appropriate means, The Union’s Student Affairs Committee (SAC), members of Students’ Council and School Presidents each have particular representative responsibilities, and are involved with decision making committees as high as the University Board. Therefore it is very important students engage with the democratic processes of the Students’ Union and elect the students they see as most able to represent them.

7.1 Course representatives and School Presidents A course representative is a student who represents their fellow students’ views and opinions to the course team, school, university and students’ union. Course representatives work proactively and diplomatically to improve the academic and non-academic experiences of students. The role of a course representative is extremely beneficial to both students on your course and the university. It enables students to have ownership of their student experience and voice their opinions and share positive practice with the course team, primarily the Student Staff Liaison Committee Meetings (see below). Course representatives will be elected every year either in April or September. Alongside receiving recognition, support and respect being a course representative is a great opportunity to enhance your employability skills. School Presidents meanwhile are annually elected representatives who voice the opinions of students within each school. They communicate and engage with students in their school to gain feedback and work in partnership with senior management to create positive change. 7.2 Student Staff Liaison Committee Meetings (SSLC) The purpose of a SSLC meeting is to provide the opportunity for course representatives to feedback to staff about the course, the overall student experience and to inform developments which will improve future courses. These meetings are normally scheduled once per semester. Meetings will be facilitated using guidelines and a record of the meeting will be provided with any decisions and / or responses made and / or actions taken as a result of the discussions held. The meetings include discussion of items forwarded by course representatives, normally related to the following agenda items (dependent on time of year). The course team encourage student feedback in all areas and recognise that additional items for discussion may also be raised at the meeting

• Update on actions completed since the last meeting • Feedback about the previous year – discussion of external examiner’s report;

outcomes of National /UCLan student surveys. • Review of enrolment / induction experience; • Course organisation and management (from each individual year group, and the

Course representatives are nominated by students from each programme, to represent each module as well as the overall programme. We ensure that you have plenty of notice and we allow time for you to elect your reps. We advertise sessions in lectures and seminars, on our notice-boards and through the various elearn/Blackboard pages for your modules. 15. Personal Development Planning

Students will be encouraged to:

• develop skills of reflection on their academic, personal and professional development • increase self-awareness of their own skills, qualities, attitudes and capabilities • improve their own learning and performance • identify strengths, weaknesses and needs and direction for change • set goals and plan action for developing, monitoring and reviewing their own progress • compile their own records of learning experiences and achievement • plan realistically for their career progression and manage their own career development and

lifelong learning

and will be encouraged to utilise and transfer these skills across the programme and in future study and career progression.

Students are divided into Academic Advisor groups and will meet on a regular basis. This enables a structured tutorial programme to be coupled with ample opportunities for pastoral support as students make the transition to higher education.

16. Admissions criteria

Programme Specifications include minimum entry requirements, including academic qualifications, together with appropriate experience and skills required for entry to study. These criteria may be expressed as a range rather than a specific grade. Amendments to entry requirements may have been made after these documents were published and you should consult the University’s website for the most up to date information.

Students will be informed of their personal minimum entry criteria in their offer letter.

5 GCSEs (A-C including English Language and Maths) or equivalent and 160 points UCAS points from cognate subjects.

We will also consider applications from students who have not had the standard opportunity to study at Level 3, or mature students who have had significant time out of formal education. Students must be able to demonstrate competence in English Language to GCSE grade C level or its equivalent. Those that do not hold a qualification at this level or provide documentary evidence prior to entry will be expected to undertake an English assessment at the interview stage.

Those who are successful at the application stage will be interviewed by the Course Leader to assess the applicant’s ability to benefit from the programme.

The English entry requirement for International or non UK students is an IELTs score of 6.5. Applicants who do not have this qualification will need to pass a UCLAN test in the UK and have a spoken interview before an offer is made.

Motivation, commitment and enthusiasm are also expected for entry on to the programme.
