ABOUT NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

ABOUT SINGAPORE

Nestled in Southeast Asia, the city-state of Singapore lies at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres north of the equator. It is an island nation made up of 63 islands, separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north, and Indonesia’s Riau Islands along the Singapore Strait to its south.

Singapore has a land area of about 720 square kilometres, making her one of the smallest countries in the world and the smallest in the region – hence the moniker “The Little Red Dot”. Although small in size, Singapore commands an enormous presence in the world today with its free trade economy and highly efficient workforce. Singapore’s strategic location in the region has enabled her to become a central sea port along major shipping routes.

Although the official language of Singapore is Malay, English is used as the main language of instruction and communication amongst the four major races – namely, Malay, Indian, Chinese and Eurasian. Each ethnic community offers a different perspective of life in Singapore in terms of culture, religion, food and language.

ABOUT JURONG NEIGHBOURHOOD

Located just a stone’s throw from NTU, the Jurong West neighbourhood is one of most frequented places by the NTU community. It is the largest estate in the western region of Singapore, complete with shopping malls, amenities, and residential buildings that houses more than 260,000 residents.

The populous urban town that we see today used to be a mangrove swamp a few decades ago. Jurong started from humble beginnings in 1961 when the government levelled the swampland with soil from the surrounding low hills and developed the area into a bustling industrial estate. Low-cost housing and core amenities were subsequently constructed to attract businesses and fuel the estate’s expansion. By the early 2000s, Jurong West had grown into a self-sufficient satellite town with modern recreational facilities, complete with libraries, shopping malls, sports complexes, tourist attractions, and public transportation systems.

While there are many exciting new plans lined-up for the future of Jurong under the 2008 Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore’s masterplan, the present-day experience is just as interesting and enjoyable in many ways.

CAMPUS MAP

INTERACTIVE CAMPUS MAP

The new Interactive Campus Map enables you to locate lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, buildings and landmarks within the Yunnan Garden Campus, and also to find directions between places easily. You may also print the map or save the link of a particular location or direction for future reference. Google Street View and NTU Shuttle Bus routes are also integrated into the map. Best of all, it works on your mobile devices too.

Getting Around

SHUTTLE BUS

Four shuttle bus routes serve the Yunnan Garden Campus. Campus Loop – Blue (CL-B), Campus Loop – Red (CL-R), and Campus Loop – Yellow (CL-Y) circle the campus with Campus Rider (CR) venturing off-campus to and from Pioneer MRT station. On weekends and holidays, Campus Rider (CR) is substituted by Campus Weekend Rider (CWR), which includes an extended route.

GETTING TO THE YUNNAN GARDEN CAMPUS

GETTING TO THE NOVENA CAMPUS

BY MRT AND BUS

The nearest MRT train stations are Boon Lay (EW27) and Pioneer (EW28) on the East West Line.

From Boon Lay station, make your way to the adjacent bus interchange within the ground floor of the Jurong Point shopping mall. Services 179, 179A, and 199 will take you into the Yunnan Garden Campus.

From Pioneer station, you can hop on the NTU Campus Rider (CR) shuttle bus that stops in front of Blk 649A, Jurong West Street 61.

BY MRT

The nearest MRT train station is Novena (NS20) on the North South Line.

From Novena station, make your way to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) along the underground pathway of the MRT station. Once inside TTSH, walk through TTSH Annex 2 and Communicable Disease Centre 2. Cross the road to Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

FROM CHANGI AIRPORT

Take an MRT train from Changi Airport (CG2), transfer at Tanah Merah (EW4) and take the west-bound train all the way to Boon Lay (EW27) or Pioneer (EW29).

BY BUS

Buses that stop outside:

• National Skin Centre are 21, and 124.• Kuang Chee Tng Buddhist Association are 21, 124, 518, and 518A.• Novena MRT station are 21, 56, 131, 141, 166, 851, and 980.

FROM CHANGI AIRPORT

Take an MRT train from Changi Airport (CG2), transfer at Tanah Merah (EW4), transfer once more at City Hall (EW13/NS25), and take the north-bound train to Novena (NS20).

FULLERTON HEALTH @ NTU

The medical service in the Yunnan Garden Campus is operated by the Fullerton Healthcare Group. Health services include outpatient medical and dental treatment, laboratory and x-ray investigation, as well as minor surgery. They also provide immunisation and travel medical advice.

In NTU, learning continues beyond the four walls of the classroom, lecture theatre, and laboratory. Each hall of residence elects a set of Hall Council officers each academic year. INSURANCE

One Stop @ SAC provides assistance on the following insurance schemes available in NTU:

Scheme Provides Coverage Against

Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI)

Death, permanent disability and medical costs arising from an accident

Group Hospitalisation and Surgical Insurance (GHSI)

Accidental death, and hospitalisation and surgery as a result of illness and accidental bodily injury

Medical Scheme Subsidised consultation fees at Fullerton Health @ NTU at $3 per visit (inclusive of GST), for up to 10 visits per academic year. The $3 fee is waived from the 11th visit onwards in the same academic year (non-standard drugs and treatments will be charged at cost)

PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

One Stop @ SAC would like to advise international students not to rely on part-time work to sustain their source of funds during their stay. Doing so is risky as part-time work may not provide a stable source of income. Should international students decide to take up part-time employment to supplement their work experience or pocket money, they are to note the following requirements:

The University Wellbeing Centre (for students) provides professional counselling services for students. UWC also conducts talks, workshops, and develops self-help resources to help students manage emotional issues and challenges faced during their journey at NTU.

PEER HELPING PROGRAMME

Students may seek help from the peer support network for students on Campus known as the Peer Helping Programme (PHP). Student volunteers are trained by UWC to walk alongside their peers, provide support to students who may face emotional or social challenges during their journey in NTU, and provide outreach and awareness on mental health wellbeing within the NTU community.

TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND SELF-HELP RESOURCES

UWC organises regular talks that promote mental health issues and wellness among NTU staff and students. These talks are free of charge and are usually held during lunch-time. Talks and workshops such as Relaxation Techniques and Exam Stress Management are also conducted to help students cope with the demands of academic studies. Self-help resources are also available for students in managing some of their issues or challenges, and may be accessed at their own time and comfort.

Cash of at least $1,000 for initial expenses (excludes tuition fees and rental), and credit card for payment of NTU fees

Funds to place a deposit and pay housing rental upon arrival

Prescribed medication and Doctor’s letter (if any)

Personal items such as toiletries, towel, bed linen, pillow cases, alarm clock, adapter, etc.

Clothes and footwear, including a light jacket for air-conditioned venues

Formal wear for interviews or important functions
