Student Profile:Lucretia SmithColumbus,Ohio
As a child, Lucretia Smith enjoyed a favorite game—
playing school with her two sisters, and she was always
the teacher. “Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to
do,” says Smith.
She’s been preparing herself ever since second grade, when
she started working with children with disabilities. “I really
enjoyed helping the special education teachers,” she says.
“By spending time with those students, it taught me that
not all people are alike. I treasured helping those who
were not able to do the same things that I could.”
Since then, Smith has been an active volunteer and
dedicates her spare time to helping both children and
adults with disabilities.
Smith is completing her senior internship in a fifth-grade
classroom where she spends more than eight hours a
day teaching English, language arts, math, science, and
social studies.
After graduation, Smith plans to start teaching right
away. With already two elementary school teaching job
offers and more interviews lined up, she is anxious to
teach in her own classroom. “I’m ready to spread my
wings,” she says.

Pirate Palooza: Pirate Palooza is East Carolina’s back-to-school outdoor festival. It’s an evening of big fun, with plenty of music, food, and games on hand to welcome students to campus in the fall.
Polar Bear Plunge: The Polar Bear Plunge is a long-running campus tradition where ECU students jump into the icy waters of the Student Rec Center outside pool in January. The event started in 1997 and has averaged more than 1,000 student jumpers in each of the last four years.
Purple and Gold Bucks: Purple Bucks (for Purple Meal Plan students) and Gold Bucks (for Gold Meal Plan commuter students) are declining-balance account programs that supplement meal choices for purchases at any campus convenience store or dining location. Usage options with Gold Bucks plans for athletics events also are available. Visit www.ecu.edu/dining for more information.
Sonic Plaza: Anchoring the space between the east and west wings of Joyner Library, the Sonic Plaza combines campus architecture and public art. The plaza, installed during the library’s massive renovation in the 1990s, includes four elements. The Ground Cloud is a 12-foot circle of mist dancing upward from the sidewalk. The Media Glockenspiel marks the passing of time in the form of a multimedia clock tower featuring video monitors, sound, and displays throughout the day. The Percussive Water Wall has water jets that spray variously changing patterns of mist. The Sonic Gates welcome passers-by when movement triggers sounds coming from within the library’s original columns.
SRAPAS: The S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series, or SRAPAS, brings big-name entertainment to campus each year. Students can buy tickets for events at great reduced rates.
Homecoming concert, a football game (of course), and much more. We welcome our ECU alumni back to campus with open arms and pride for our Pirate Nation. www.ecu.edu/homecoming
main Campus: One of East Carolina’s three campuses, Main Campus is home to the majority of ECU’s academic, administrative, and support buildings, as well as all the residence halls. This is where you’ll spend most of your time as an undergraduate student.
mall: The Mall runs through the heart of Main Campus. This grassy, tree-dotted spot—the “back yard” of the Central neighborhood residence halls—is a great place to read a book, throw a Frisbee, and hang out with friends.
minges maniacs: They say the home crowd at basketball games is the “sixth man,” and the Minges Maniacs prove the truth in that statement. These student Pirate fans sport their purple and gold proudly as they cheer on the men’s and women’s basketball teams to victory in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Cupola: The Cupola, located on the Mall, is a reproduction of the architectural structure that topped Old Austin Hall, East Carolina’s first administration building. Old Austin stood where the Jenkins Fine Arts Center is today.

victory Bell: Located on Main Campus near Christenbury Memorial Gymnasium, the 382-pound Victory Bell was given to East Carolina in 1932 by the US Navy. The bell was cast in 1855 in Philadelphia and was placed aboard the naval ship USS Broome, which escorted convoys across the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
