About ECDIS Ltd

ECDIS Ltd was established in 2008 by traditionally trained ‘paper’ seafarers. They had successfully made the ‘digital’ transition to ECDIS on various ships throughout their careers at sea. They produced the White Paper on ECDIS Type Specific in August 2008 and began a relationship with all the leading ECDIS manufacturers. In 2009 they developed the World’s first IMO 1.27 Generic Course to be complet-ed over the full 5 days including the additional modules on operating ECDIS without GPS. Their course was awarded approval by the MCA the same year, and from 2010 they developed a client base of over 200 international shipping companies providing their ECDIS training. In 2011 their Type Specific course was accredited by the Nautical Institute. In 2012 they produced ‘The ECDIS Manual’ published by Witherby Seamanship International. Since then they have developed several other publications including amends to several bridge procedures guides. In 2013 they started developing their course portfolio to range from BTM and HELM to Instructor Technique courses, as well as several other courses that are not delivered under the MCA. In 2014 they began an ongoing international program training Inspectors, and in 2017 they produced and distributed the course updates for the new PL 4.0 ECDIS software.

Their Headquarters is in Hampshire, UK. Their Website is www.eMaritimeGroup.com

2019 marks our ten year anniversary in delivering training courses to Seafarers every week. From our humble beginnings in 2009 we now deliver 36 different courses, of which 6 are under the authority of the Maritime Coast Guard Agency (MCA) of Great Britain. This document shows the seafarers feedback on those training courses, plus similar associated courses.

We operate an open reporting policy and take all feedback extremely seriously. It is the training and production departments vision to maintain excellent course standards giving seafarers what they need to improve safety. We maintain the record of only one isolated `be-low average` comment from one student, on one of the post course feedback questions, on one course in 2016. We are proud to hold the highest overall average of customer satisfaction averaging 86% to 98% perfection over all the courses, with not one complaint from any of the 7196 students to date. Our clients naturally want more of our training, and we are hoping to have more of our high quality courses approved and available to seafarers soon.

HELM (O) and HELM (M) courses receive by far the highest feedback from seafarers, Instructors and Assessors*. After the course, every student leaves understanding not only their limitations, but the potential limitations of others they work with and how to try and com-pensate for them. More importantly, they leave more positive about their career at sea. On a personal note, I would like to thank the visionary individuals within the UK who created this course requirement against the negative tidal wave who considered Human Element training to be too ‘holistic’, and held the opinion that seafarers would not enjoy or benefit from this training. I only hope this course requirement is one day replicated overseas. My international experience auditing hundreds of ships, and reviewing countless collisions and groundings, leads me to believe that many more could benefit greatly from the ‘human element’ courses.

Finally, our flagship courses are the IMO 6.09 (theory), and IMO 6.10 (theory). I am proud to state that we are now the preferred provider to train maritime instruction techniques for many organisations world wide. To train the trainers, under the authority of the MCA, gives us great pride. The excellent feedback we receive from University and College lecturers who attend our facility for these courses, suggests we are successfully delivering our small part in the wider campaign to improve safety at sea.

All our data complies fully with GDRP and is externally evaluated for accuracy and compliance with our quality management system.

Any other `could improve` comments from feedback worthy of note:

- Entry #2163 (2018) Received unsatisfactory on: did subject matter meet expectations and how much more knowledgeable are you after this training. Overall Rating from student from course was Very High (5 out of 5). Corrective Action: After investigation of #2163 it appears that the student was already a very experienced instructor and perhaps felt that additional training was not needed. As overall feedback was Very High no Correction Action was deemed necessary for the feedback that the course did not meet their expectations.

Corrective Action: After reviewing the entire feedback from student, we noted that the ‘average’ feedback was for 2 of the 20 elements, one comment of particular note: ‘more practical time in simulator required’. As the course is theory only, more practical cannot be added. The overall feed-back from the student was very positive and high. Therefore no further action was deemed to be required.

Class Limitations

Your training is important to us here at ECDIS Ltd and because of that we have ensured there are no minimum booking numbers for any of our type specific courses. All type specific training can be scheduled and conducted for one student. Classes are limited to 2 trainees per terminal. Maximum numbers do apply and vary across different manufacturers – please contact us for further details.

Trainers

All of our trainers are specialist navigators that are highly experienced in the practical use of ECDIS. Combined, our trainers have taught over 2000 mariners. Training is not limited to our facility. Onboard Training is also an option depending on the clients needs.

Prerequisites

Those attending the course should have conducted a generic 5 day IMO 1.27 ECDIS course. They should have experience in performing chartwork and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures and equipment. They should know about the functions and limitations of other navigational equipment. ECDIS is not aiming to teach trainees to navigate using ECDIS. It is teaching them to use ECDIS in order to navigate safely. Therefore, we require the trainee to have the basic navigation knowledge and that they understand what a navigation watch entails. We at Ecdis Ltd are of the opinion that traditional navigation techniques are still relevant in a digital world and as such we will teach the use of existing navigation skills on an ECDIS system.

Example Of Recent Feedback On Two Instructors

An Engineer by background, Neil began his career in the Maritime Industry as Operations Assistant to the Port Solent Marina in 2002. Since then he has traveled the World extensively working with and for almost every aspect of the Maritime Industry, both at Sea and ashore, from Oil and Gas to Cruise to Super Yachts. He holds the prestigious Certified IT Profes-sional and Specialist qualifications from Microsoft, and has been integral in the development of both on-board Navigation equipment and shore-side Simulation training equipment for the last 14 Years. In 2015 he completed the IMO 6.09 and IMO 6.10 Train the Trainer and Simulation Trainer courses as well as several Leadership and Management training qualifications. For the last 3 years he has been teaching several technical courses in Navigation including the IMO ECDIS 1.27 and most of the 38 Type Specific manufacturers of ECDIS. His documented feedback is outstanding achieving over 95% perfection on all courses which led him to receive the eMaritime Group Annual Instructor prize in 2017. His teaching qualifications were augmented further in 2017 with the successful completion of the PTLLS Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and further Train the Trainer qualifications with ProPass. His passion is in delivering week in, week out Navigation courses, however over the last 12 months he has been heavily utilised at sea conducting on-board Navigation audits predominantly for LNG. He is lead author in several SMS guides and procedures and has worked with numerous large Shipping Companies in developing safe procedures and best practice for modern navigation equipment. He is a Member of the Nautical Institute and is always looking to continually develop his Maritime Professional qualifica-tions. Outside of work coaches and mentors at his local archery club and enjoys camping and hill walking.

Neil Savage MNI

Jonathan Dovaston was born in the Balearic Islands and is bilingual. Jonathan was practically raised at sea and his first maritime qualification was at age 6. He is keen to point out this was not necessarily through choice, however this is the consequence of being heir to the World famous Dovaston Crew Company, and the family tradition of Super Yacht Captains. His experiences range from various types of vessels that he has been lucky enough to enjoy all over the world. However his most memorable experience was sailing through extremely rocky waters in confined conditions where he admits his nerve was tested to the very limit. His experiences have helped him become a better instructor as he understands all too well the dangerous role professional seafarers sometimes face every day.Academically he excelled in School, in particular in Maths and IT. At sea this naturally led his curiosity to understanding the engineering of bridge equipment better. In particular, modern integrated bridges and their relationship with shore. He is an associate Member of the Nautical Institute and is currently working on a paper exploring efficiency opportunities between Container vessels, terminals and road transportation links. He is also working on the potential vulnerabilities of EDIFACT security, and is looking to develop his research into Ballast Water Management and potential security threats. After completing the IMO 6.09 qualification in 2018 he began work as a formal Maritime Instructor. His student feedback is outstanding, and he is now the most requested instructor for 5 different Type specific systems where he has become a deep knowledge expert over the years. When he is not on the water, he is under it, as a PADI Advanced open water diver and PADI Open Water Rescue Diver.
