BEPRATHLETICSData gathered for the past 3 years has been similar to the 20092010 data. We have evaluated the class of 2013 data and our updated findings are as follows. Summary of Batavia High School Data Evaluation Our group gathered three different groups of data to evaluate the impact that participation in athletics (at Batavia High School) had on student achievement in the classroom and on standardized assessment. We used 20112012 PSAE scores for current seniors, GPA data for current seniors, and participation records for all sports at Batavia High School during that same time period. PSAE Data Evaluation 144 of our current seniors participated in at least one sport during the 20112012 school year. This was approximately 31.8% of the class members. (Athletes represented 34% of the class in 20092010) All 144 of those sports participants took the PSAE in 20112012. Comparative Data Athletes vs. NonAthletes 20112012Meets/Exceeds o PSAE Reading: Athletes 76.4% NonAthletes 72.4% o PSAE Science: Athletes 82.6% NonAthletes 70.8% o PSAE Math: Athletes 86.8% NonAthletes 71.8% 73.6% of the BHS athletes who took the PSAE met or exceeded the state standards in all 3 areas Math/Science/Reading. 85.4% met or exceeded the state standards in 2 of the three areas. 56% of the BHS NonAthletes who took the PSAE met or exceeded the state standards in all 3 areas Math/Science/Reading. GPA Data Evaluation 20112012 The cumulative average GPA of the 144 students in the athlete group is 3.57 The cumulative average GPA of the nonathlete student group is 3.05 The cumulative average GPA of the 49 multiple sport athletes is 3.62 92 of the athletes competed in 1 sport, 50 competed in 2 sports, and 2 competed in 3 sports. Student Discipline Data 20112012 We are currently evaluating student discipline days reported in 20112012 for junior athletes and junior nonathletes. This will include in school and out of school suspension. CONCLUSIONS REACHED BY DATA EVALUATION 1. Juniors who participated in athletics during the 20112012 school year met or exceeded the PSAE state standards at a significantly higher rate than nonathlete juniors. 2. The average GPA of the current seniors who participated in athletics as juniors is significantly higher than students who did not participate in athletics.

BEPRATHLETICSData gathered for the past 3 years has been similar to the 20092010 data. We have evaluated the class of 2013 data and our updated findings are as follows.  Summary of Batavia High School Data Evaluation

Our group gathered three different groups of data to evaluate the impact that participation in athletics (at Batavia High School) had on student achievement in the classroom and on standardized assessment.

We used 20112012 PSAE scores for current seniors, GPA data for current seniors,  and participation records for all sports at Batavia High School during that same time period.   PSAE Data Evaluation

● 144 of our current seniors participated in at least one sport during the 20112012 school year. This was approximately 31.8% of the class members. (Athletes represented 34% of the class in 20092010)

● All 144 of those sports participants took the PSAE in 20112012. ● Comparative Data Athletes vs. NonAthletes 20112012Meets/Exceeds

o PSAE Reading:  Athletes 76.4%  NonAthletes 72.4% o PSAE Science:  Athletes 82.6%  NonAthletes 70.8% o PSAE Math:  Athletes 86.8%  NonAthletes 71.8%

● 73.6% of the BHS athletes who took the PSAE met or exceeded the state standards in all 3 areas Math/Science/Reading.  85.4% met or exceeded the state standards in 2 of the three areas.

● 56% of the BHS NonAthletes who took the PSAE met or exceeded the state standards in all 3 areas Math/Science/Reading.

GPA Data Evaluation 20112012 ● The cumulative average GPA of the 144 students in the athlete group is 3.57 ● The cumulative average GPA of the nonathlete student group is 3.05 ● The cumulative average  GPA of the 49 multiple sport athletes is 3.62 ● 92 of the athletes competed in 1 sport, 50 competed in 2 sports, and 2 competed in 3

sports.

Student Discipline Data 20112012

● We are currently evaluating student discipline days reported in 20112012 for junior athletes and junior nonathletes. This will include in school and out of school suspension.

CONCLUSIONS REACHED BY DATA EVALUATION 1. Juniors who participated in athletics during the 20112012 school year met or exceeded the

PSAE state standards at a significantly higher rate than nonathlete juniors. 2. The average GPA of the current seniors who participated in athletics as juniors is significantly

higher than students who did not participate in athletics.

Page 2: Student athlete v Non Athlete academic data

3. Juniors who participated in multiple sports met or exceeded the PSAE state standards at a higher percentage than those who participated in only one sport during 20112012

4. As a percentage of the school population we have seen a decrease in athletic participation from 20092010 (34%) to 20112012 (31.8%). The total number is relatively similar but the school population has grown.

5. Greater participation in athletics (participants added through program expansion) should produce an increase in PSAE scores and GPA for all of Batavia High School.

6. Juniors who participated in athletics during 20092010 faced less student discipline and served less discipline days as a percentage of the corresponding group. We expect to find similar results for 20112012.
