“Art is as important as education because art is education.”Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi
First Chairman of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) was established by the Hawai‘i State Legislature in 1965 as the official arts agency of the State of Hawai‘i. Arts education is a valuable part of a well-rounded school curriculum. Engagement in the artistic process fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, often referred to as “21st century skills.” It is our responsibility to society to promote these skills in students by supporting arts learning in schools. Students who create art are expressing themselves and gaining an understanding of who they are.
Objectives of the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Program are to enhance the environmental quality of public buildings and spaces throughout the state for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public; to cultivate the public’s awareness of visual arts in all media, styles, and techniques; to contribute to the development and recognition of a professional artistic community; and to acquire, interpret, preserve, and display works of art expressive of the Hawaiian Islands, the multicultural heritage of its people and creative interests of its artists.

My Culture, My Family, and MeThe Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition is a program established by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) to recognize and display student artwork in accordance with Section 9 – 4, Hawai‘i’s Revised Statutes. The program provides an opportunity for students to participate in a juried art exhibition hosted at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum. Permanent display facilities were designed and constructed for Pā Kamali‘i Courtyard at the Hawai‘i Convention Center and a competitive annual exhibition was developed by SFCA in cooperation with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority.
The Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition is open to all public and private school students, grades kindergarten through sixth. The theme, “My Culture, My Family, and Me” is intended to inspire students to express how they feel, see, or interpret their lives in the islands. Once schools submit artworks, distinguished judges select 96 works for exhibition.
The 2021 Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition will enable visitors to experience the common interests and cultural diversity of Hawai‘i through the art of its youth.
