• Students may possess and use portable electronic devices, including but not limited to cell phones, I-pods and similar music players, other recording devices, cameras, et cetera, subject to limitations of this and other policies of the District under the following conditions and guidelines:• Portable electronic devices shall not be turned on or

used in any way during instructional time or when their use is otherwise prohibited by school administrators or teachers.

Policy JICJ Example Language

• Students are required to turn portable electronic devices over to school personnel when requested.

• There is, in certain instances, educational value in utilizing portable electronic devices in class or during instructional activities. Approval for students' use of such devices will be at the discretion of the classroom teacher and/or site administrator unless such device is mandated in the student's individualized education program (IEP) or the extreme nature of an emergency renders the securing of such permission impractical under the circumstances.

• Students/parents are hereby given notice that students do not have an expectation of privacy in the information stored in the electronic device once the device has been confiscated by a teacher or school administrator. The District reserves the right to search confiscated electronic devices by administration if there is a reasonable suspicion that the device has been used to violate school policy or that the device has been used to cheat or to threaten, embarrass, harass, or intimidate other students, teachers, volunteers, school guests or school employees or has otherwise been used inappropriately in violation of this policy. The administrator will make a reasonable effort to notify parents prior to the search.

• Unacceptable behaviors in the use of electronic devices at school include, but are not limited to, the following:• Students will not play games, e-mail, listen to music

or any other activities, applications or functions during class time, unless expressly approved by a teacher for the educational goals of that particular course and during that particular class.

• Students will not use speech that is inappropriate in an educational setting or violates school rules.

• Students will not display, access or send offensive messages or pictures.

• shall adhere to all Governing Board policies related to technologies including but not limited to the use of District technology, copyright laws, student rights, parent rights, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), staff ethics, and staff-student relations;

• are responsible for the content of their posting on any form of technology through any form of communication;

• shall use technologies to enhance and add value to communications with all recipients and be respectful of those with whom they communicate;

• A student may be subject to disciplinary action when the student:• Uses personal portable electronic instruments,

communication, and entertainment devices, including but not limited to cell phones, still and video cameras and equipment, recording/playback apparatus, and other electronic equipment which may be used for similar purposes, during the school day or during directed student study time unless such use has been specifically authorized by the school administrator.
