    Revised 9/20/2020

Welcome from the Principal Welcome to Doral Academy of Nevada – Red Rock Upper/High School! It is truly a privilege and honor to serve as the principal of the first Doral Academy of Nevada Upper/High School. We are so excited to continue enhancing the amazing arts integration collaborative efforts and opportunities along with our sister schools: Saddle, Cactus, Fire Mesa, and Pebble. Our main goal is to provide a productive and exciting experience for our students. It is our intention to provide a sound education for every child enrolled in our program. The staff considers the intellectual, emotional, and social growth of each child to be our primary concern. This objective can be fully achieved only through close communication and cooperation between home and school. This handbook is a means of communicating important information about our school and it has been collaboratively compiled to serve as a consistent and convenient reference to assist you in answering questions about matters of common concern. Please review the contents of this handbook together with your child and feel free to contact the school regarding any questions about our program. As a staff, we believe that schools are for children; that our purpose as educators is to create an environment necessary for the academic and social growth of every child; that effective education is a combined effort between home and school. Therefore, your questions, concerns, and suggestions are always welcome. Sincerely, Danielle McDowell Principal, Doral Red Rock US/HS

What is a Charter School? As defined by the national alliance of Public Charter Schools (www.publiccharters.org): Charter schools are independent public schools allowed freedom to be more innovative, while being held accountable for improved student achievement. They foster a partnership between parents, teachers and students to create an environment in which parents can be more involved, teachers are given the freedom to innovate, and students are provided the structure they need to learn, with all three held accountable for improved student achievement.

What is Arts Integration? The interdisciplinary, art-integration curriculum of Doral Academy of Nevada sets our charter school apart from the other school systems in Nevada. Teachers incorporate the arts into instruction as a tool to help students understand content. Students also complete arts integration projects, utilizing an art form to demonstrate mastery of content. Doral Academy of Nevada uses the following definition from The Kennedy Center to define arts integration.

Attendance Doral Academy is waiting on additional guidance from the state regarding attendance. Attendance will be taken daily using Infinite Campus regardless of student cohort. Attendance is extremely important and is a focus at Doral Academy. The state of Nevada tracks student attendance and Doral Academy is held accountable for students attending school. Aside from state reporting, students need to learn the life skill of arriving on time to school every day. Students who have missed more than ten days (total excused or unexcused) may have limited, or be restricted from, participation in field trips, sports, student performances, and/or extra-curricular activities. Students who have missed 16 or more days (total excused or unexcused) will have limited, or be restricted from, participation in field trips, sports, student performances, and/or extra-curricular activities. If your child is absent from school, written notification must be received by the school within three school days after their return, or the absence will be deemed unexcused. Students must attend school the day they are involved in sports practices, games, student performances, event nights, or extra-curricular activities in order to participate that day. Please remember that your child needs to be on time and in school every day in order to learn. Every minute of learning counts, in-person or in an online environment. Please be aware, ten (10) consecutive days absent without any contact with the school will be cause for automatic withdrawal from Doral Academy. Twenty (20) consecutive days absent, WITH OR WITHOUT contact with the school, will be cause for automatic withdrawal from Doral Academy. In addition, if a student reaches 20 absences in a school year, that student may be retained dependent upon academic growth. In accordance with Nevada law, students must be physically present in school for a minimum of 2/3’s of the school day or period (for middle/high school students) in order to be counted as present for attendance purposes. For each day a student is absent, parents/guardians must submit supporting documentation explaining the reason for the absence. Documentation submitted more than three days (72 hours) after the student’s return to school will not be accepted, and the absence(s) will be deemed unexcused. Students with excessive absences (10% or more of the school year) are identified as chronically absent by the state of Nevada (see Department of Education memo here). Attendance Review Committee referrals will be issued after reaching the school’s maximum allowance (18 days), and may result in the student’s report card reflecting insufficient attendance for receiving a grade/credit and/or not being promoted to the next grade level. Please see Doral’s Attendance Policy for more information located on the website. To minimize the spread of COVID-19, it is essential that parents not send their students to school when exhibiting symptoms. Please screen your students for the following symptoms each day before sending them to school: fever (above 100.3oF without having taken any fever-reducing medications), loss of smell or taste, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, chills, headache, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. Students who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with an active case of COVID-19 or who have been asked to self-isolate or quarantine by a medical professional/local public health official should not attend school in-person. Any students staying home for these reasons must fulfill attendance requirements

through remote live instruction. Immediately notify the school of the need to move your student into Cohort C.

Students Symptomatic at School If a student presents with symptoms of COVID-19 at school, the student will immediately be sent to the nurse for evaluation. The nurse will keep these students separate from other students with the use of isolation rooms. The school will then call every adult on the contact list in Infinite Campus until one can be reached to pick up the student and take them to seek medical care and/ or testing. It is imperative that all contact information be updated in Infinite Campus. It is also crucial that students be kept home if they are presenting with symptoms and that parents and guardians respond swiftly to pick up their student if the school contacts the household with COVID-19 related concerns. Procedures for Students and/ or households with a confirmed case Please Notify your school’s front office immediately Families are expected to follow the guidelines set forth from the CDC and the governor of Nevada. Household with a confirmed case of COVID-19

    • Stay home for 14 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19 • Watch for fever (100.4◦F), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of

COVID-19 • If possible, stay away others, especially people who are at higher risk for getting

very sick from COVID-19 Students with a confirmed case of COVID-19

    • Stay home except to get medical care • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at

home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.

    • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.

    • Stay in touch with your doctor. Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you have trouble breathing, or have any other emergency warning signs, or if you think it is an emergency.

    • Separate yourself from other people • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and

confirmed COVID-19 case with confirmation from the school and when all of the following criteria are met

    • 3 days with no fever AND • Respiratory symptoms have improved (e.g. cough, shortness of breath) AND • 10 days since symptoms first appeared.

Tardiness Students are tardy if they are not in their classrooms or Zoom sessions by the start time for that period. Any teacher or administrator may send a tardy student to the office for the appropriate disciplinary action at any time. Tardy lockouts are conducted periodically. The purpose of the tardy lockout is to encourage students to report to class on time. Tardy students will receive a Notification of Violation of the Tardy Policy and will be sent to class. A parent/guardian must sign the student back into school the next school day. Students have five (5) minutes between classes to walk to their next class.

Prearranged Absence Notification Nevada State Law allows you to prearrange absences for your students. A completed Prearranged Absence form must be submitted at least three days prior to the planned absence. The student is responsible for requesting make-up work form all teachers prior to the absence and submitting it upon return in order to receive credit for the work. Any prearranged absences for which the make-up work is not completed and submitted as required are also unapproved and count toward the limitation of absences.

Truancy Law The principal of the school is required to report the students who are habitually truant to law enforcement.

    1. A habitual truant is defined as “a student who has three unapproved or unexcused absences within one year, for a class.”

    2. A truant is a pupil who is absent from school without the written approval from a parent or guardian.

    3. The court may order the parent to pay a $100 or more for habitual truancy. 4. The court may order the suspension of existing driver’s license privileges for students

16 years of age or older if they are habitual truants.

Distance Education Expectations Doral Academy of Nevada will continue to maintain the high standards for education in the classroom and through distance learning. Student online behaviors are expected to mirror the behaviors expected in the classroom. Infectious Disease Protocol for Doral Academy of Nevada Research shows that people who have no symptoms can spread COVID-19. Wearing a non-medical face mask helps minimize the spread of the virus. Everyone should wear a mask when out in public. This includes teachers, staff and students. (Instructions for making homemade masks can be found at the Colorado Mask Project.) As part of our reopening, guidelines from our state charter and governor says that masks are to be worn while on the Doral Academy of Nevada campuses as follows:

    • All staff must wear masks • Students in Grades K through 12 must wear masks

Any special circumstances should be discussed with the school administration. MASKS SHOULD:

    • Be appropriate in content/design/pattern • Be clean and in good condition • Fit snugly, but comfortably against the side of the face, under the chin, and over the

bridge of the nose • Be secure (banded snugly behind the ears or tied snugly behind the head) • Include multiple layers of fabric when applicable • Allow for breathing without restriction • Be able to be laundered and machine dried on a daily basis (have extras) • Be on the wearer’s face (over both the nose and mouth) • Face shield are allowed only in addition to a face mask, not as a replacement

MASKS SHOULD NOT: • Have anything hanging off the facial covering that would create a safety

hazard • Have an incorporate a valve • Have holes, openings, visible gaps, or tears • Have inappropriate images or words • Be shared under no circumstances

NOTE: Neck gaiters, bandanas, and scarves cannot be substituted for a mask. WEARING MASKS:

    • Wash your hands before and after putting a face covering in place • Do not touch the facial covering again until you remove it

  • Doral Academy of Nevada Red Rock Upper/High School Student and Parent Handbook

    • Masks should be positioned so that there is no need to adjust or otherwise touch the face frequently

    • If your mask becomes soiled or hard to breathe through, you should remove and replace

    • Remove your mask only to eat or drink Additional Information on Masks: For us to keep our students, families, teachers and other employees safe plus keep our schools open, all students are expected to wear a mask at school. The Center for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Nevada Department of Education have recommended the wearing of face coverings. In addition to sending your child to school in a mask, please provide an additional clean mask in a plastic bag in their backpack in case they need to change their mask in the event it becomes soiled or the ear straps break. Cloth masks made with two layers of cloth work well in minimizing the spread of respiratory droplets and are the most comfortable to wear. If your child has not become accustomed to wearing a face mask, it would be beneficial to start practicing so your child will become comfortable in a mask prior to the start of school. Children adapt well to wearing a mask, especially around family and friends who are also wearing a mask. The following are some tips on the wearing and care of a face mask. How to Wear Cloth Face Coverings (CDC) Cloth face coverings are an additional step to help slow the spread of COVID-19 when combined with everyday preventive actions and social distancing in public settings. Wear your Face Covering Correctly

    • Wash your hands before putting on your face covering • Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin • Try to fit it snugly against the sides of your face • Make sure you can breathe easily

CLEANING Enhanced cleaning procedures are regularly implemented throughout the school day. This includes, cleaning handrails, door handles and other high traffic areas. Classrooms are wiped down with safe, disinfectant products between each cohort and are cleaned each evening. STUDENT SUPPLIES Students are responsible for bringing their own school supplies to and from school each day. They are not able to store any supplies at school, nor are they permitted to share them with other students.

Personal Hygiene at School According to the CDC, COVID-19 is mostly spread by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. It is thought that the virus may spread to hands from a

  • Doral Academy of Nevada Red Rock Upper/High School Student and Parent Handbook

contaminated surface and then to the nose or mouth, causing infection. Therefore, personal prevention practices are important principles. Doral will promote the following to reinforce proper hygiene and behaviors that reduce the spread of the virus. Hand washing: ● Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This is especially important after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food. ● Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry ● Soap and water are the best option, especially if hands are visibly dirty. ● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Cover your coughs and sneezes: ● Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. ● Throw away used tissues in a lined trash can. ● Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Face Coverings: ● Face coverings must be worn when on campus by all K-12 students and staff. ● Reinforce the appropriate way to wear face coverings that cover your nose and mouth. ● Remember to not touch the mask.

V.I.P. (Very Important Person) Doral Academy of Nevada encourages parents and guardians to volunteer at the school. There are many ways that parents and guardians can volunteer their time at school. There are many ways to support the school. We look forward to you becoming a V.I.P. at Doral Academy of Nevada! Please be advised that non-school age children are not allowed into the classrooms during the school day. Please make other arrangements for younger children when volunteering at school.

Teacher Conferences You are invited to schedule a formal teacher conference during the school year to discuss your child’s progress. This must be done outside of instructional time, allowing the teacher a minimum of 24-hours to schedule an appointment. Teachers will make every effort to accommodate parent schedules and parents are expected to attend conferences when at the scheduled time. By working cooperatively, we can provide the best education for your child. We especially encourage this when you have questions about your child’s progress, class work, or school policies.

Student Recognition Students will be recognized for outstanding behavior and academics. Recognition will

include assemblies, pep rallies, citizenship, attendance, and end of the year recognitions. Students will also have the opportunity to earn a letter, “Doral D,” and club pin for fulfilling service requirements by participation in school activities.

Homework Policy The amount of homework per subject will vary. The purpose of homework is to practice and maintain previously learned skills from the classroom. Additionally, homework builds responsibility, develops study habits, and promotes adult involvement in the child’s education. Students will be responsible for recording homework assignments in their agendas.

Visiting The School Parents are invited and welcome to visit the school on a limited basis to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Visitors are required to check in at the office for a visitor’s pass. Class visits are a time for observation. It is necessary to call the school’s office in advance to schedule a time that is convenient with the teacher. Any questions or conferences should be reserved for an appointed time when more privacy and time is available. Also know that we cannot honor requests for relatives and friends to visit the school during the school day. Parents are not to interrupt instructional time or teacher’s preparation periods without first scheduling an appointment.

Phone/Written Messages & Deliveries to Students Messages will NOT be delivered to students during instruction time. Student safety is of our utmost concern, the verification of identity over the phone is not permitted. Doral Academy Nevada supports the belief that education is important. With this in mind, please be aware that we are unable to deliver forgotten items (lunches, money, cell phones, and supplies) during instruction. Please support us in our endeavor to limit classroom disruption and increase student responsibility by reminding students to bring all necessary materials with them to school.

Personal Belongings Items such as electronic games, visors, hats, bandanas, skateboards, headphones, glass containers, selfie sticks, water guns, balloons, spinners, and trading cards are NOT PERMITTED on campus and should be left at home. Non-essential items will be confiscated and returned to a parent or guardian. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items that are brought to school.

Lost and Found Students can claim lost items by checking the Lost and Found area. Small items such as money, purses, jewelry, glasses, keys, and cell phones can be claimed in the school office.

  • Doral Academy of Nevada Red Rock Upper/High School Student and Parent Handbook

Periodically throughout the year, accumulated items will be donated to local charities.

National School Lunch Program Information about purchasing lunches can be found on the Doral website under the Parents tab. Students are also welcome to bring their own lunches from home. All students will have access to school meals either for purchase or through nutrition services. Applications for nutrition services are available on the school website and/or at the front office. Meal-time procedures have been adjusted to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19. These procedures, made possible by the limited number of students on campus at any given time, are customized by the student population to ensure the needs of each group are met. Cohort A/B students and students receiving school lunches through nutrition services will use a contactless payment system and social distancing measures will be followed. Cohort A/B students and students receiving school lunches through nutrition services will have a designated area to pick up the following days’ lunches. For example: Cohort A students attending face to face on Mondays/Thursdays will pick up Tuesday/Wednesday lunches Mondays and Friday lunches Thursdays. Cohort B students attending face to face on Tuesdays/Fridays will pick up Wednesday/Thursday lunches during Tuesday dismissal and Monday lunches during Friday dismissal. Cohort C students attending classes via 100% distant learning, will pick up lunches for Monday-Friday on Fridays from 2:00 pm-5:00 pm the Doral Red Rock Campus. For additional site distribution times, please see the Parents tab of the school website. Only enrolled Doral students will be allowed access to school meals. Note: All food service staff will wear face coverings and gloves in the preparation and handling of food packages. This includes setting up service in the multipurpose rooms and when delivering lunches to the classrooms. Plexi-glass partitions will be used in the multipurpose room at the contact point when students pick up their lunch.

Emergency Contact Information It is extremely important for the school to have current home and emergency contact information including telephone numbers and addresses so that you may be notified in case of an illness or an emergency. If this information changes throughout the year, please inform the school office immediately.

Health Office The Health Office is located in Room 323. A full-time health aide is on duty each day. Students who become ill must obtain passes from their teacher and report to the health office. Students should report to the health office when they are ill rather than contacting their parents directly. Parents will be notified by the Heath Office when necessary.

  • Doral Academy of Nevada Red Rock Upper/High School Student and Parent Handbook

Medication If a child under a physician’s care is well enough to be in school, but requires medication during the school day, parents must contact the school and sign a medication assistance form (MED 102). Medications must be in the original prescribed container and must be kept in the health office. The only exception is for students that must keep medication for Asthma/Anaphylaxis with them at all times. For this a Health Care Provider must complete the Student Self- Administration Forms (MED 107). Over the counter medication can only be given with an order (MED 109) from a Health Care Provider (including cough drops). Please do not send over-the-counter medications with your child. All medical forms are available on the school’s website.

Grading Policy Doral Academy will continue with standards grading procedures for summative and formative assessments regardless of the cohort in which students are enrolled. Student grades will be determined in relationship to progress in the mastery of the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Student progress is communicated through the Infinite Campus Grade Book. Students and teachers are viewed as partners in the learning process, and parents and teachers must work together to promote student ownership of learning through this communication. Activities assigned by teachers during the learning process, such as homework and practice assignments, will have very little or no weight in the grade book. Emphasis is placed on final demonstrations of learning. To further the accuracy of reported student achievement, behaviors are not included in academic grades. It is very important students learn responsibility and other critical life skills, and progress in these areas is reported through citizenship grades.

Notice of Unsatisfactory Grades Parents/Guardians are expected to regularly monitor Infinite Campus. Progress reports are available on Infinite Campus. Parents/Guardians may be notified at any time during the grading period when it is apparent that the student may fail the course or whose citizenship is unsatisfactory. This notification can be verbal, written, or electronic.

Retention Policy Doral Academy Nevada has implemented a strict policy regarding retention. Students must meet specific levels of performance in order to be promoted. For students who are not meeting grade level performance levels and are at risk for retention, the parent/guardian will be notified in a timely manner to provide opportunities for intervention and remediation. At the end of the year, the student’s data will be reviewed in conjunction with the parent/guardian and a determination of grade level retention will be made. Students who fail to meet requirements will be required to attend summer school at the parent/guardian’s expense to retrieve credit for classes failed during the school year. High School students must successfully pass all attempted classes in order to remain on-track for graduation.

Schedule Change Policy Advanced planning and guidance are provided for each student prior to registration. Changes to course requests may be made until May 1, 2020, and schedule changes due to preference will not be made after this date. Schedule changes may be made for the following reasons: placement in a course required for graduation, misplacement in an academic area, and/or successful completion of summer school course work.

Progressive Discipline Plan Red Rock Upper/High School follows the Doral Academy of Nevada Progressive Discipline Plan. Parents will be contacted when students violate the Dragon Code of Conduct. The severity of the action and the disciplinary history will determine the consequence (e.g., detention, required parent conference, suspension, or expulsion). Classroom teachers issue citations to student offenders and after the third citation, students are referred to the office. When dealing with more serious offenses, teachers may find it necessary to complete a citation and send that student to the principal’s office for immediate action. Students who are witnesses or offenders may be interviewed by the administration as part of a disciplinary investigation. Continued disregard for school rules is a key factor for all disciplinary consequences. Please refer to the Doral Academy of Nevada Progressive Discipline Plan on the website for a complete list of charter school and criminal offenses,
