Pacific Women’s Resource Center Presents: Wendy MurphyRETHINKING RAPE: Introducing a New ParadigmThursday, March 22nd at 7pmDeRosa Center Ballroom

Adjunct Professor of Law at New England Law Boston and national expert on the legal and cultural response to crimes of sexual violation, Wendy Murphy will present a provocative new approach to the way we think about, talk about and respond as a society to rape. Rape, Murphy argues, is at its core a violation of the victim's personal autonomy, thus a violation of basic human rights. Rape is not "bad sex, but rather bad citizenship." We need to change the way we view the crime of rape, Murphy explains, and understand the importance of educating men and women to resist and disrupt the mainstream messages they are getting about sex and violence.

Wendy is a former child abuse and sex crimes prosecutor who teaches at New England Law/Boston. Wendy specializes in the representation of crime victims, women and children. She also writes and lectures widely on victims' rights and criminal justice policy. Her expose of the American legal system, And Justice For Some, came out in 2007. This event is co-sponsored by Pacific Arts and Lectures. Event is free and open to the public.

365 Days - 365 Plays by Suzan-Lori Parks, Directed by Macelle Mahala, PhDFriday, March 23rd at 8pmDeMarcus Brown Theatre

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of the Pacific is staging 365 Days/ 365 Plays, written by Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Professor Macelle Mahala. The playwright wrote one play a day for a year, some of which are connected and some not. A group of 12 students will be performing 70 out of the 365 plays. Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in drama, has inspired Mahala for years: “I saw the play for which she won the Pulitzer Prize on Broadway performed by Jeffrey Wright and Mos Def: it was mesmerizing.” Mahala staged another of Parks’ plays, Devotees in the Garden of Love, as part of her graduate work at the University of Minnesota. This is her directorial debut at the University of the Pacific.

This fast-paced, witty collection of short plays is full of vibrant characters and circumstances. The production contains situations that include a face off between a disillusioned shopping mall Santa and a soccer mom, a strange encounter at a bus stop, a wandering mariachi, the personification of the Hindu gods Arjuna and Krishna, and a homecoming queen’s fleeting five minutes of fame. The production also incorporates singing, dancing, and video projection.
