July 6, 2017 MERIT STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MAKE MUSIC CHICAGO Suzuki-Alegre strings students in Bartelme Park for Suzuki Play-A-Long Approximately 30 Merit students participated in events as part of Make Music Chicago 2017 on June 21. Violin and cello students from the Suzuki-Alegre program performed at The Suzuki Play-A-Long in Mary Bartelme Park, and Merit Conservatory students Sheila Esquival, Alex Zarate, Ethan Tong, and Sajdah Muhammad joined ten other Chicago String Quartets as part of Lift Every Voice: Musicians Rising for Racial Justice. String quartets prepare to perform in Millennium Park.

Eleven Chicago string quartets joined Make Music Daycelebrations across the country for performances of SamuelBarber's Adagio for Strings and George Walker's Lyric forStrings. Quartets from Boston to St. Louis performed the workssimultaneously at 11:30 am and 5:00 pm CST. In Chicago,each quartet performed at a different location in the citybefore coming together for a collective performance in theevening at Wrigley Square in Millennium Park, where theywere joined by three-time Grammy Award-winning gospelsinger Darius Brooks singing Patti Garvey's arrangement of J.Rosemund Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing".

In addition to the student performers, Merit faculty alsoperformed as members of the Hamilton (Chuck Bontrager),Volta (Anna Sanders), and Kaia Quartets (Hope Shepherd).

- Spend the week with Merit's qualified faculty, trying each of the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments played in the band. Students will pick their favorite at the end of the week and receive priority registration for fall classes.
