Skateboards and Bunny Rabbits...

So you might be asking yourself, why in the world would i put this in here. What can I say, I dare to be different. Well, sort of...I do things for a reason. they might just be a little uncanny at times.I needed some form of transporta-tion to get around campus at col-lege. Some of my friends had bi-cycles, but people steal bike tires and brakes off them frequently, so I didn’t want to go through that. I didn’t have enough money for a car, and I thought that looking for park-ing would be too much of a hassel. My only real option was to get a skate-board because it was faster than walk-ing and I can keep it with me everywhere i go. So it’s less likely to get stolen.

things got sour with my ex, and most of my friends in hawaii have either graduated or moved away. so, i start-ed going through some lonely times It was just me and my art. I didn’t live near any of my close friends and I’m not really the type to go out. So the best idea i could come up with was to get a pet. Unfortunately, my land-lord doesn’t want pets. So, i need-ed something that is quiet enough to get passed him and small enough to keep in a section of my room. I went to the humane society to find something and I stumbled upon my new buddy Sheldon (shown above). I would say it was a perfect de-cisions. Rabbits are low mainte-nance, quiet, and theyh don’t re-quire much attention. Unfortunately, when I left Hawaii, I had to leave him behind. I miss my buddy dearly.

IT was a week before i was to have hip surgery for the second time.I

wanted to go out with a bang since i was to be in a wheel chair for the

next month.spent a week making the costume from supplies at walmart and instructions from youtube.

The costume was based off of my favorite character from Mortal Kombat, Noob Saibot. Making the whole thing, from start to finish, was an amazing expereince. I got to try a little bit of design and sew-ing, and combine that with my cre-ativity and other artistic abilities.

here is a t-shirt de-sign i did for the cute monster contest at deviantart.com i initially sketched a outline on paper then i imported it into illustrator. I realized i suck at vector art, so i de-cided to use pho-toshop and a wac-com tablet to draw and color it free-hand. unfortunate-ly, i did not place in the contest but it was a good experei-ence to have as far as getting my feet wet in the graph-ic design industry.

Seniors Dissembled

I did this piece to commemorate the time I spent with my teammates and fel-low seniors of the 2011 university of Ha-waii warrior football team. I decided to make the theme based on the marvel avengers because everybody had a nick-name that they went by in the locker room, and Avengers is one of the most popular movies this summer.

STUCK ON AN EYELAND

STEVEN A. CHRISTIAN

Here is the webcomic that I started for my website. Fontunately, I was also able to get some of them published in the Ka Leo Campus Newspaper at the University of

Hawaii at Manoa.

“The greatest and most important problems in life are all in a certain sense insoluble. They can never be solved, but only outgrown.”

- Carl Jung

IS THIS PARADISE?

51

“Utopia is a place of dreams. Paradise is reality. Falling short of our expectations. Never exceeding our desires.

Are we really in paradise? Or is it a pair of dice?A gamble with reality.”

A metaphor for being alone in the world; having nothing to do; no where to go; no one to turn to. Just stuck. Yet, you are always on constant watch. Watching everything you do. Someone is always watching you. Many References are pulled from my life. The constant struggles of a Black Student-Athlete that attempts to overcome the expectations of American Society. The dilemma of being under constant surveilance and scrutiny.

This story takes place on the island of Taviti. It is a small island in the Pacific Ocean that lies between the islands of Hawaii and Japan. The inhabitants are like that of any other island that is occupied by a first world country. They are upset they were unjustly taken over, but fortunate to have the luxury of modern technology. Taviti is the epitome of modern day paradise. Yet, the idea of paradise is not reality.

The story is focused on the trials and tribulations of T.J., an African American 12 year old boy, that escapes from his hometown of Sacramento, California to what he thought was paradise. He later realizes that his new home is plagued with the same problems that he tried to escape from. Instead of trying to escape a second time, he decides to suppress his anguish and deal with the problems head on.

What Is The “Eyeland”

Page 61: Stuck On An Eyeland

webcomics

53

Growing up reading Aaron Mcgruder’s The Boondocks and watching the TV show on Cartoon Network, I was inspired to voice my opinion on they was society was. Since the end of the boondocks syndication, I took it upon myself to pick up where Mcgruder left off. Although the times and event may have changed, one thing I realized is that history is bound to repeat itself in some way, shape, or form. My vision for the series is to create awareness of the injustice and ignorance of society. We have made great feats in the areas of technology and social justice, but at the end of the day people will act the way they did 100 years ago. Taking place on a secluded island, I can push the events of the story to unimaginable feats.

By now, You might have noticed that these kids are 10,

11, and 12 years old and they are talking

about things that are inteded for people that are more ma-

ture. This is done for a reason. I am try-

ing to point out that our advancement in technology, i.e. the internet, tv, etc, al-lows us to access in-formation easier. On the flipside, it also exposes youngsters to sex and drugs at a younger age. I am also trying to point out that there are very few adults in

the series. I feel that in the 21st century

parents are less ac-tive in their childs lives as they grow

up, and this is repre-sentative of the way they act around their peers as they grow

up. They are more in-clined to profanity and act on impulse

rather than thinking about the outcomes

of their actions.

The month was Febru-ary, Black History Month in Hawaii, and I was up-set there weren’t any positive African American shows on TV to commemo-rate Black History Month. To add insult to inju-ry, shows like Gangland, Cops, and Locked Up were having marathons every

weekend. So I thought to myself, “I know that I’m not the only black per-son in Hawaii.” Secondly, “I know that black peo-ple watch TV.” This is whenI came up with the idea to make a comic about a TV show that highlights a positive black influence living on the “Eyeland.”

this is the birthday present i made for [she who shall not be named]. i spent my whole winter break on it. unfor-tunately for me, she only looked at it once (for about 5 minutes), and she was too [high in the sky floating with the clouds] to remem-ber what was in it. i guess when you’re stuck on an eye-land, miserey wants company.

To make this, I combined a whole lot of art styles. I sketched out the panels, then I Took some old pictures and manipulated them to fit within the borders. After-wards I enhanced the photos with both vector art, grun-ge overlays, and photoshop filters to make it look and feel more like a comic book.

this is my attempt at making a good action comic. I initially wanted to animate it but my skills in animation are not upto par right not. the pur-pose behind this project was to gain expereince by creating a comic the way profession-als do it. that is by first fir-guring out what th story will be about, the drawing out the panels in pencil on large paper, scanning it into the comput-er, and digitally coloring it.

the only problem was that i didn’t have the proper tools or time to completely fin-ish it. Little did i know that scanning larg prints into a computer is very hard and expensive if you don’t have a scanner at home. secondly, i realized that drawing a comic the same way the profession-als do is hard. when a comic is released there is a team behind it, not just one person. what i found to be daunting is taking the role of writer, penciler, inker, colorer, and letterer.

a sketch i drew when i went to my friends hula prac-tice. She was mad that i didn’t give the girl long hair. Apparently, All fe-male hula danc-ers have long hair.what shocked me is that although hula is native to hawaii, native hawaiians make up 27.8% of the hawaiian popu-lation. So it is safe to say that the majority of hula dancers are not native hawaiian. We can see that over time tradition will bend and change to the way people change in society.

I drew this in maui in my sketchbook dur-ing spring break. I was waiting for the bus so that I could go to mall to search for a skateboard. I got so fed up with the lack of urgency that HAwaii public transportation has, so i drew the first thing in front of me.

i was searching for ideas to come up with for a self-portrait. After browsing the internet. I noticed that I had a digital picture frame right next to me. My dad tends to buy these things, But he is somewhat technologically illiterate. So I picked up the picture frame, turned it on,

and this is what i got. A picture frame full of pictures.

I used to being used to,I used to being used too,Thinking why I used you,

Why I didn’t use you?I used to cry in the dirt

Thinking about, “why did it hurt”I should have lied until you hurtBut I want to fly to the heaven

When is my time going to come?I’m used to being used to

Because I got used toUse to being used too

I used to grind in the dirtI used to cry because it hurt

Then I would cry from your dirtNow I wish he hits you where it hurt

So that you could feel used to

How did I get to this point?Solitude. Lonliness.

Tasting the glimpse of a dream,And being forced to wake up.

Onset by lies and deceit of a superficial love.Am I really that naïve?Or am I just that nice?

Too kind to realize ill intentions.Too optimistic to see how pessimistic life really is.

How can I be so stupidSo naïve, so narrow minded.

So caught in the moment, the beauty, the dream. That I lost connection with reality.

The effect of a bipolar influenceTwisting my mind, toying with my emotions

Investing too much into what I thought was special As I lay here overthinking, contemplating memories, recanting what I

thought were good timesI realize

This was never a dreamThis was not what I really wanted

Not what I hoped forA cruel reality

Contemplating lifeWondering how did she get to me

“man, that b***h is crazy.”That’s funny, she never seemed to me.

I was so naïveLooking back at how I used to be

Her poison was so potentI’m sure there’s no way of curing me.

Invested my time in bulls**tAnd all I got was her bulls**t

HPV, I seeThat was her first strike, s**t.

4 years I pushed throughI thought you were staying by me

I left to chase my dreamAnd you followed right behind me

“entertain me, Entertain me!”“got no friends or family.”

B***h I’m trying to surviveAnd you are still trying to change me.

Nice a** guyBomb a** dream

I want to change the worldI just need you on my team.

“Cooking and cleaning.”“and mouths to feed.”

Your dreams aren’t mineIt’s just you I need.

Can’t believe I was so blindHer strike 2 is greed.

Studying, grindingI was fighting for two

Why am I fighting alone? B***h, where are you?

“I just want to be singleThanks for keeping me on track

When the time is rightI’ll come back.”

“you’re a great a** friendAs a man you’re whack

The strike is 3I’m about to crack

Through homelessness I opened my door

But I was just a numberAnd you’re still a [insert word here].

We’re out here dream chasingAnd you changed your major, jersey chasing.

I did nothing to youI wouldn’t do that to you.

“whatchu meanDj and Jakeem?”You can keep DJ

But ropo was on the team.

How could I ever believeYou would remain clean

I was too blind to seeYou were always part of that scene

This is my worldYou got here through me

Barely passed HSNow you’re at a University?!

I left there with a legacyAnd yours? A DVD

“I just wanted to be famous.”They remember you because of me.

“he’s a great a** guy.”5 months strong, I see.

The last one didn’t want you And you came running back to me.

Dismissed all the signsIgnored the warnings

“open your eyes dummy,I told you she was crazy.”

The lies build upNot just to me.

“I’ll take it to the grave.”I see, I see

It’s as deep as graduationOur families came to seeYou aren’t in the program

But you’re still following me

It’s cool, it’s coolI made it in the end

I’m just too big for youAnd you have your lover, your

Texas friend.

All the punched you threwI was verbally beat

Tried to tie me downUntil he takes you to eat.

The split was hard Even harder for me

I just need some help“I don’t have time for MDD.”

Keep your loveYour Adderall flavored ice cream

Keep living that HI lifeYou’re not apart of my new

dream.

You give me a reason to do them dirty

I would never say that That’s how bad she hurt me

I see, I see, I lost more than just me

“I love him, he’s great for me.”Thanks for telling me

The funny part isHe’s a step down from me.

You see, I don’t just do thingI’m always doing me

Impacting everything I touchLeaving a legacy

Well ill leave you with themWo said , “you’re rude a.f.”Keep your enemies closer

If you have any friends left.

Late nights contemplating nothingObvious advice that was necessary to hear

Grounding me when my head flew awayTeaching me to walk when I lost my legs.

Thank you for the adversityYou were doing you at the expense of me

My name is Steven Christian, and I am a 21 year old, African American, Division 1 Student-Athlete. I am the eldest of 3 siblings (two younger sisters) and the son of two loving parents. I grew up in Sacramento, California, and I spent the past four years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I will be pursuing my Master’s Degree, continuing my College Football Career at Oregon State University. I see myself as a very unique individual. I draw cartoon, earned a BA in Psychology with an emphasis on neuroscience and intent to go to medical school, and play football at the highest possible collegiate level. Not many people can say those three things in that same sentence and still relate it to themselves. My passions are described by what I call the

“Three A’s.” Those include: Academics, Athletics, and Arts. They are all of equal importance to me. I developed this philosophy because I had to find some way to overcome the adversity in my life. In the end it proved to be beneficial because it worked for me and my situation specifically.

“Athletics” represents my competitive nature. Athletics has aided me in many areas of life. It has allowed me to gain acceptance and popularity. More importantly, it has taught me self-determination, persistence, the value of teamwork, and the discipline to stay focused on a goal.

“Academics” represents my passion for knowledge. No matter what it is, I yearn to learn about it. It allows me to become more independent because I can rely on myself to do things and do them the way I envision them, instead of paying someone else to do it for me. Being so immersed in the academic aspect of life has mentally prepared me to think critically in every possible situation. I can approach life differently because I know how to analyze situations effectively and come up with solutions and reasoning to justify it.

Page 227: Stuck On An Eyeland

about the author

219

“Arts” represents my creative side. All great minds are creative minds. Steve Jobs is a prime example. They are problem solvers. When traditional problem-solving techniques fail, the average person doesn’t know what to do. They will usually ask someone else for help. Yet, for great minds, when problem-solving fails their creativity fosters, and they come up with unrelated ideas that end up working. Every aspect of life is full of problems. Therefore it is necessary to have someone who can think outside of the box.

Following the “Three A’s” allows me to combine all my talents into everything I do. I pride myself on being a creative person. I have good mental imagery, knowledge on a wide range of topics, not afraid to be different, value my independence, and have an entrepreneurial spirit. So having all three of these aspects in my life, I not only stay physically active and in tip top shape, but I also am mentally prepared for whatever come my way. It allows me to be a great problem-solver because I have the knowledge to approach a task, the discipline to follow the necessary step to complete it, the determination to finish it, and the creativity to make it look nice and feel unique.

My qualities have allowed me to gain experience in many areas. I have business experience from starting my own website, and charging customers for services based on the skills that I have. I am currently writing my first graphic novel to promote my website. I have worked with professional athletes all over the country. Working with professional athletes has increased my drive to take my athletic aspirations even further because I know that I can compete on that level. I have done internships and volunteer work for research studies and hospitals. One specific internship I did was in Oakland California. I have a passion for helping people, whether they are physically sick or distressed. I want to learn as much as I can to help people live the happiest lives they can in their respective situations. I have also worked with writers, animators, and illustrators both on line and in person. Being able to see artists at work and analyzing the ideas, time, and energy that they put into it is a very surreal experience. I have worked with a animator who did work for Dream works pictures on movies, such as A Shark’s Tale and Hidalgo. She has helped me create short films, which served as public service announcements to create awareness about social injustice in American media. I have also taught three Psychology 100 classes at the University of Hawaii.

Page 228: Stuck On An Eyeland

t th

220

I have also run a tutoring center at John F. Kennedy High School for students to get help with math and science, free of charge. It has given me a whole new perspective in life because I can see the impact I have on the way students learn material and pass tests. I can relate to all these professions on a personal level because of the time and energy I invest in them on a daily basis.

My goals are to become a doctor; go into research on mental disorders (such as Alzheimer’s and ADHD), the way people learn, and other cognitive functions; turn my own website into a business of good standing; get the accreditation to establish myself both in the community and in the professional world; create awareness about social issues; and combine my knowledge, skills, and techniques with my passion for academics, athletics, and arts to help people live their lives better, both physically and mentally. I feel that money will come if you are deemed as valuable to society, but there is no greater feeling than knowing that what you do and who you are can directly impact a person’s life in a positive way. In some ways, I want to be “Mister Everything.” If anybody needs help with a problem, I want them to be able to come to me. I have already taken steps towards those goals with my comic web series, website, being a Division 1 Student-Athlete, and getting my Bachelor’s Degree.
