This week’s Birthdays

Ms S Corrigan celebrated her birthday on the

18th May.

Every year on May 25, GMCN( Global Missing Children Network) members pay respects to International Missing Children’s

Day, honouring missing and abducted children while celebrating those who have been recovered. Following the 1979 dis-

appearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz in New York City, May 25 was established as Missing Children’s Day in the US by Presi-

dent Ronald Reagan in 1983.

In 2001, the tribute spread worldwide. ICMEC coordinates the Help Bring Them Home Campaign in 22 countries, in conjunc-

tion with International Missing Children’s Day, to spotlight the issue of child abduction around the world, and to suggest to

parents some steps they can take to protect their children.

A. Make sure custody documents are in order.

B. Have ID-like photos taken of your children every 6 months and have them fingerprinted.

C. Keep your kids' medical and dental records up to date.

D. Make online safety a priority. The Internet is a great tool, but it's also a place for predators to stalk children.

Be aware of your child’s Internet activities and chat room "friends," and remind them never to give out personal

information. Avoid posting identifying information or photos of your children online.

E. Set boundaries about the places your children go. Supervise them in places like malls, movie theatres, parks,

public bathrooms, or while fundraising door to door.

F. Choose caregivers — babysitters, childcare providers, and nannies — care

fully and check their references.

If you've arranged for someone to pick up your children from school or after-

care, discuss the arrangements beforehand with your children and with the

school or aftercare staff. http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/abductions.
