GHS Strings is not just an electric guitar string company – we’re much more! We are the string brand inspiring you to play an extra encore. We are the string brand encouraging you to play harder, go longer. We are the string brand that’s got you covered – whether you’re playing electric or acoustic guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele and more.

Since 1964, we’ve been winding guitar strings in the same southwest corner of Michigan that gave birth to Gibson Guitars. Though based in Battle Creek, we are global, but our values remain rooted in midwestern soil. We are fiercely independent – we are no-nonsense perfectionists believing in hard work, craftsmanship, and the power of music.

GHS Strings is a family of artists and experts built on tradition to help aid in the quest for personal string design and tone. To that end, we still use round core wire for much of our guitar strings and use some string specs decades old.

We look to our half-century past to guide our future. Our unyielding passion about tone, personal specs, sound, and durability drives us to push string design – even reinvent the envelope itself when needed – to improve upon the product line, first and foremost.

INFINITY BRONZE™Looking for a coated string that is vibrant and lively? We coat the cover wire with a finely-regulated process called MST™, wrap them around the core wire, retaining tone while providing excellent longevity. Cryogenically treated plain strings complete the equation.

SILK AND STEELFor those that want a classical guitar tone and feel out of an acoustic, this is YOUR string. Silver-plated copper wire is wrapped on a silk and steel core to create a sweet and mellow tone, with a lower tension under the fingers.

SILK AND BRONZEOur special blend phosphor bronze alloy is wrapped over a silk and steel core, providing a warm tone with a sweetness to it. The lower tension of the strings is a joy under the fingers. These strings are GREAT for studio work!

WHAT IS BASS STRING "WINDING LENGTH," AND WHY DO I CARE?Winding length is actually VERY important! Nowadays, it is common to see basses with different scale lengths, new and creative bridges, thru-body stringing, or fanned frets, etc.. Knowing the winding length of your instrument is imperative to ensure you get the proper string for your bass; it's more important than scale length. For example: the Hofner Violin Bass is a 30" scale bass, but with the trapeze bridge, requires a set of strings with atleast a 32.5" winding length which, depending on the string brand, is NOT short scale.

To find the winding length for your instrument, measure from the ball end of the bridge to just past the nut (ideally, between the nut and the closest tuning peg to the nut). Any string with a winding length that falls within that measurement will work well. Too short and you risk having the silked/tapered end over the nut and into the first fret; too long and the "meat" of the string will wrap around the tuner, which can compromise the string. For your information, here are the winding lengths of all GHS strings.

HOW DO STRING MATERIALS AFFECT TONE AND FEEL?The hardness of common materials used in the cover wire of strings affects both the tone and “feel” of a string. With all else remaining constant, the harder the material the brighter the string. This explains why stainless steel produces a very bright sound and nickel, a softer material, produces a warmer sound. However, a hard material can be abrasive to both fingers and frets. At GHS, our magnetically active nickel-iron Alloy 52™ - used in Progressives and other strings - is softer and less abrasive than stainless steel but produces a tone nearly as bright. Common cover wire materials include (ranked by order of brightness): stainless steel, Alloy 52™, nickel plated steel, pure nickel, and for acoustics: brass and bronze. The core wire for all strings and all plain steel strings (both acoustic and electric) are made from tin plated Swedish steel.

WHAT IS STRING GEOMETRY, AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT STRING TONE?String Geometry refers to the ratio of the core wire diameter to the cover wire diameter. These two parameters can be varied to come up with the same final string gauge. With all else remaining constant, a small core-to-cover ratio generally results in a string with greater flexibility and brighter tone. A larger core-to-cover ratio generally results in a string with greater volume, sustain, tone life and durability. In addition, a larger core-to-cover ratio aids in retaining consistent tension and feel for down tuning or drop tuning.

HOW DOES WINDING TECHNIQUE AFFECT TONE?There are four types of winding techniques used for strings. The type providing the brightest tone (all else being equal) is the roundwound string. It is made with round cover wire wrapped around the core. Burnished strings are considered roundwound.

Next brightest is the rollerwound string. The round cover wire is crushed to a semi-flat configuration as it is wound around the core. Our Pressurewounds are an example of a rollerwound string.

Next, and “mid-bright,” is the groundwound string. This string starts as a roundwound and then ground by a centerless grinder which removes almost half of the round cover wire, leaving a smooth-feeling surface. Our Brite Flats are a groundwound string.

Finally, the flatwound string produces the darkest, or mellowest, tone. This string is made by winding a flat, or “ribbon,” wire around the core. The string is then polished smooth.
