All Smiles: Our Women’s Fourth Grade Premiers What a wonderful month! One of the most exciting parts of being president is attending the finals, whether a team wins or loses. All the Derwent teams in the finals, whether it be the semi-finals or the grand finals, represented the Club with absolute pride, humility and determination. I congratulate the two teams that won premierships – Under 12 Division 2 Girls & 4th Grade Women. It does not matter that we did not win the premiership in each grade (although my heart did break for all the teams that reached the grand final and did not win), because we all play for a wonderful club, one where we support each other in both the good times and the bad and one where the future looks bright. We only need to look at the support for the premier league men in the final by the 2nd grade women when they had lost in the most nail biting of situations or in the alternative the bright and numerous numbers at the recent Junior Presentation Night where the room was full of what can only be described as our future. I hope to see everyone at the Presentation Night on the 17th October where we can conclude the season in style! DIVISION2UNDER12GIRLSPREMIERSCongratulationstoourUnder12Division2Girlswhowonahardfoughtmatch1-0againstminorpremiersNWGtoclaimthePremiership.

The girls were the best team in thecompetition for most of the year, however dropped to second positionlate in the season with two losses anda draw. The grand final was reachedafter a 1-1 draw in the semi-finalagainst Canterbury.

Regular full-back Anna Rawson wasnot able to play in the grand final asshe was overseas, which resulted in aplan to move Eleanor McNamara (thegoal scorer in the semi) from centreforward to full-back. Eleanor broke herwrist two days before the game, whichmeant a new plan – to move VictoriaFish into full back from half back.

As Derwent finished 2nd on the ladderthey needed to beat NWG and it wasimportant to score the first goal.

Derwent started the first half verystrongly and was rewarded around the15th minute with an outstanding goalfrom Emma O’Grady who brokethrough the full backs and neatlypushed the ball into the corner of thegoals past the keeper.

Shortly after, a series of passes startedfrom Harriet Kelly (our remainingregular full-back) in the back-linethrough to a shot on goal from GeorgieFox, who was unlucky not to secureDerwent’s second goal.

NWG were desperate in the secondhalf with a majority of possession anda number of shots on goal. Derwent’sbackline was outstanding repellingnumerous attacks and saving anumber of goals on the goal line, including shots from two short cornersin the last two minutes of the game.

Goalkeeper Abby Moore played herbest game of the year saving a numberof goals, as did Harriet Kelly andVictoria Fish.

Georgia Bennett was outstanding allgame controlling the ball anddistribution from centre-half and taking

responsibility for the 16 yard hits andfree hits across the ground.

Felicity Wilson-Haffenden finished herexcellent year (with a broken thumb)leading a number of attackingopportunities and a number ofdefensive saves.

It was a great team effort by all girlswho have developed well during theseason and are deserved premiers.
